PRESENTING HHSO LEAGUE MUSICALES

2021-2022

MUSICALE #1 • HAPPENIN’ HOLIDAYS Sunday, December 12, 2021, 3 – 5 pm Stan Cooke (Port Royal) Port Royal Beach House SCAD Honeybees; Mike Evariste, director; Kim Steiner, accompanist

Mixing a delightful arrangement of upbeat pop and holiday favorites, these swinging singers from the Savannah College of Art and Design’s musical theater program spread exuberant holiday joy for all! MUSICALE #2 • MUSIC OF THE QUEEN Wednesday, January 12, 2022, 5 – 7 pm Mona and Joe Huff (Rose Hill in Bluffton) Tacy Edwards, flute; Kelly Odell, oboe; Rosalyn Floyd, piano

Imagine yourself a guest in Buckingham Palace, properly attuned to British accords and conventions, and then the music starts… Malcom Arnold, Madeleine Dring, Gustav Holst, Max Richter, a nod to the American experiment with William Grant Still, and carry on does it. Chuffed, you’ll find yourself declaring this to be a jolly good show. Bully! MUSICALE #3 • VINTAGE JAZZ! Wednesday, February 16, 2022, 5 – 7pm Candi and Tom Hough (Spanish Wells) Harper Krimm, Junior Jazz vocalist; accompanied by David Masteller, bass, and James Berry, piano

Evocative, unconstrained, syncopated, and at times decadent, the music of the 20’s and 30’s symbolized a nation rejuvenated and resilient. With the aid of local jazz luminaries David Masteller and James Berry, the talented Ms. Krimm, a superstar of The Jazz Corner’s Junior Jazz Foundation, takes us back to the nostalgic Jazz Age of night clubs, variety radio shows, the arrival of talkies, and the double feature.

MUSICALE #4 • LET’S DANCE Sunday, March 6, 2022, 5 – 7 pm Rocky and Ginny Whitehead (Berkeley Hall in Bluffton) Nina Sandberg, violin; Chee-Hang See, piano

Winners of the 2021 International Boosey & Hawkes Score Video Contest for their video performance of Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne, Nina Sandberg and our very own Youth Concerto Competition accompanist, Chee-Hang See, deliver a fanciful treasure of a dance-inspired program including Stravinsky’s melodic Suite, a bon-bon by violin master Fritz Kreisler, Souvenirs by American Paul Schoenfield, and Dances by Englishman Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. MUSICALE # 5 • SPRING BLOSSOM Sunday, Apil 3, 2022, 5 – 7 pm Mary and Mike Briggs (Hilton Head Plantation) Lizhou Liu, violin/viola; Yvonne Johnson, viola

HHSO Principal violist Lizhou Liu and his wife, Yvonne Johnson, give us a glimpse of the elegant string duet music you might hear in their house on any given day… music from the height of the baroque and classical periods: a Telemann canonic sonata and Stamitz duet, a lovely violin and viola duet by Ernst Eichner, all punctuated with the serene and meditative Chinese folk song “Spring Blossom.”

Musicales are members-only events. If you are interested in learning more about or joining the League, please contact
