Why do you love music? I learned to love music from my band director, Tom Bishop, at Lake Wales High School in Florida. He was a wonderful, but demanding, band leader/conductor for seven years of my life, starting with the flutophone in sixth grade. Our high school band won 25 straight superiors in Marching and Symphonic Band through 1971! Not bad for a small-town high school band in central Florida! The past year has been one of many challenges, not only for the orchestra but also for the League. COVID-19 has impacted the entire HHSO family for more than a year, but we are coming back strong in the 40th Season of the orchestra and the 10th year of John Morris Russell as Music Director and Conductor!
The League was founded in 1998 by Ellen Taylor who was its first president. From a small group of dedicated friends, the League has grown to over 350 committed volunteers who support a variety of fund-raising events and services. For more than 20 years, the League has upheld Ellen’s vision as a fundraising and friend-raising organization whose purpose is to strengthen and support the Orchestra and its youth programs.
This season’s fundraising events include: • Swing Fore the Symphony Golf Tournament at the beautiful Wexford Golf Club on Monday, November 15, 2021 beginning at 9 a.m. • Five Sunday evening Musicales in five lovely Lowcountry venues, December - April. • The Spring Luncheon, Fashion Show and Silent Auction, held in the Magnolia Room of the Country Club of Hilton Head, Tuesday, March 22, 2022 beginning at 11 a.m. Special League services include: • Monday evening post-concert receptions, organized by League volunteers. • Support for events such as Symphony Under the Stars (April), the Concours D’Elegance (November), the International Piano Competition (March) and the Youth Concerto Competition (February). • The Spring Fling, a celebration to recognize and thank League volunteers, caps off the season’s activities on May 13, 2022. We invite you to join with us and support our outstanding HHSO. We are a dynamic group of men and women who can achieve anything we set our sights on. The benefits are many - fun, friendship and new opportunities as we work together for a successful 40th Season!
