PRF Activity Guide - Summer 2025

Page 1

Welcome to your 2025 Summer Activity Guide! Get ready for another exciting summer filled with opportunities for the whole family! Whether you’re looking for ways to stay active, learn something new, or simply enjoy the beautiful outdoors, we have something for everyone.

Watch the kids shine as they improve their skills in tennis lessons, gain confidence in swim classes, and make new friends in our Summer Explorers or Cool School Rec programs. Teens can develop leadership skills in the Leaders In Training (L.I.T.) program. Adults can pick up a new hobby, from golf and tennis to cooking and yoga. Seniors, stay active with fitness classes or enjoy outdoor concerts, trips, and tours!

Make the most of summer evenings with live music at Cutler Park! The Les Paul Performance Center will once again come alive with the sounds of the Waukesha Civic Band on Thursday nights—don’t miss the grand finale! Swing by for Jazz@Cutler Park on Wednesdays, and rock out at a Tribute Tuesday concert.

As we celebrate Independence Day, be sure to decorate the kids’ bikes, scooters, and wagons to join the colorful children’s section of our annual 4th of July parade. This year’s theme is “Hat Tippin’ Boot Scootin’ 4th.” Fireworks will once again light up the sky at Lowell Park on Thursday, July 3rd.

No matter what’s on your summer agenda, take time to explore and enjoy our beautiful parks throughout Waukesha! Plan a family picnic, cool off at the pool, take a nature walk, or enhance your summer with one of our many recreational programs. Wishing you and your family a safe, fun, and memory-filled summer!

C I T Y O F

WAUKESHA CURRENT

This year, the Assessor’s office is be completing a full re-evaluation of every property in the City This means they will be evaluating the fair market value data for every property in the City and determine what value your property should be assessed at.

What does this mean for you? Staff from the City Assessor’s office will be reviewing the assessed value for your home and any other property you have in the City.

Why is this process important? It’s important that the City has established values that are fair, equitable and based on the current market rates

Does this mean my taxes will go up? Property assessments and taxes are not directly linked There are at least three ways where your assessment could go up, but your taxes go down That happens if relative to your neighbors’ assessments, yours is increased proportionally less, if there are new properties/developments built in the City to help support the City’s budget, or if the City’s budget decreases

When will the re-evaluation happen and what can I do if I disagree with the assessment? The Assessors office began their property assessment review in early 2025 At the end of April 2025, all properties with a change in assessment will receive a letter in the mail. In early May 2025, the Assessor’s office will hold “Open Book”. This is a period of time where you can meet with the Assessor’s office to discuss your property assessment If after meeting with the Assessor’s office during “Open Book”, you are still not satisfied with your property assessment, you can submit an appeal to the Board of Review The Board of Review is a formal hearing process where you can present your case regarding your property assessment If at any time you have any questions or concerns about assessments, you can feel free to contact the City of Waukesha Assessor’s Office at 262524-3510 or send an email on our website waukesha-wi.gov/contact.

As of March 31, 2025 the City has fully transitioned to Johns Disposal for all garbage and recycling collections. Collection schedules will remain widely unchanged, with the possibility of small adjustments

If you have a missed pickup or need to schedule a bulk item pickup, please contact Johns Disposal at 262-473-4700 or visit waukesha-wi gov/garbage

REVIEW THE RULES FOR HOME IMPROVEMENT & PROPERTY MAINTENENCE

As the warmer weather approaches, we kno you know the regulations and receive the proper permits for your project before you start. Visit our website at waukesha-wi.gov/inspections for more information on the following:

Swimming Pools Driveways

Decks Garages/Sheds

Other home construction projects.

Also, remember that there are regulations for maintaining properties. Take some time this spring to tidy up your property, including picking up trash, trimming overgrowth, picking up pet feces, and cleaning up old bird seed and other food sources to prevent rodents. If you notice a concern, you can report it using the "Report a Concern" feature on the homepage of the City website at waukesha-wi.gov/report.

DON’T FLUSH THAT!

Doing some spring cleaning? Sometimes we forget that the toilet is not a trash can. All wipes and disposable cleaning products belong in the trash Even though some products are labeled "flushable," they should not go down the toilet as they can clog the sewer system, contributing to costly cleanups and basement backups.

Common Offenders (need to go in the trash can to dispose).

Disinfecting wipes

Paper towels

Swiffer mop refills

Toss-in toilet bowl wands

Shop towels/rags

Towelettes

Baby wipes

Pickleball Drills & Skills for Equally Skilled Partners

(6 hours of instruction)

Most people agree you can’t improve playing a game just by playing the game. So come to this class and improve your pickleball skills with repetitive drills. The basic shots of the game will be practiced multiple times in different drills in various game-like scenarios. The shots covered include serves, return-of-serves (drives), dinks, drop shots, volleys/blocks/overhead smashes, and lobs. Emphasis will be placed on being more intentional about technique, targets, and tactics. At the end of each session, time will be given to play a game applying what’s been drilled. Entering game results into DUPR will be encouraged. Students are also encouraged to setup their smartphone and video-record themselves during the drills and games. Finally, students will take away from the class good drills they can use after class. Wear good court shoes and comfortable sport-clothing. Bring something to keep you hydrated. Eye protection is recommended. This class is not for beginners. To get optimum benefit from these drills, an equally-skilled, competitive partner is required. Registration is for an individual and one partner. The partner’s name and e-mail address must be provided at registration.

Free Trauma Sensitive Yoga

Community

A trauma informed approach to yoga makes practice safer and more accessible through intentional language and movement. A certified yoga therapist has received additional training around potential trauma triggers in certain demographics as compared to standard certification. When we live through traumatic experiences, as our community has done, it changes how we interact with the world. Our minds may adapt by reliving the past, disconnecting from our bodies, or becoming hyper alert of what might happen in the future. As adaptations help us survive traumatic experiences, they can make it hard to live in the present and feel like we’re in control of our lives. In this class, participants will be guided through gentle moving yoga poses that will help you strengthen your body, be mindful of your breath and help build energy.

Everyone welcome – most people experience or will experience a traumatic event at some point in their lives. Participants are welcome to participate in a chair or mat (please bring your own) as modifications will be made.

The Need for Tree Diversity

Urban trees are an essential component of city landscapes. They provide a wide range of environmental, social, and economic benefits. Tree diversity is vital in enhancing ecological resilience, protecting public health, and ensuring long-term sustainability.

While aesthetic or economic value may be the first thing you may think of when you visualize an urban forest, environmental benefits are the primary role for urban trees. Trees improve air quality by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen, mitigate the urban heat island effect, reduce flooding, soil erosion, and help to reduce effects of climate change. A diverse tree canopy is crucial in managing these challenges. Different species are better suited to varying urban conditions, such as extreme temperatures, pollution levels, and water availability. Tree diversity increases resilience to pests and diseases.

When cities rely on a small number of tree species, a single disease or pest outbreak can quickly decimate large sections of the urban canopy as witnessed with Emerald Ash Borer. Tree diversity provides an ever-changing visual experience by offering different colors, textures, and seasonal features. This variety enhances the quality of life, promotes positive mental and physical health, and fosters a connection to nature. We are striving to diversify Waukesha’s urban forest every chance we have.

The next time you’re enjoying the shade of a tree, look around at the many trees Waukesha uses to provide the environmental, aesthetic, and economic benefits trees provide.

Tree highlight: Kentucky Coffeetree - Gymnocladus dioicus Kentucky Coffeetree is a large shade tree which can reach heights of 70 feet or more. Its thick branches turn slightly outward and create a high, narrow, and irregularly rounded crown. The bark is dark gray or brown and will become deeply fissured as the tree matures. Its leaves are unique because they are bipinnately compound which means they can have 40-60 leaflets on each leaf! The leaves grow alternately on the stem and can be 12” to 36” in length that will turn yellow to rusty orange in fall. Female trees grow purplish-brown seed pods that are 6” to 10” long that enclose six or more hard, round, flat, dark reddish-brown seed pods. Inside the pods are the seeds which are surrounded by gelatinous matter that contains a toxin that is harmful to humans, pets, and livestock if eaten in large amounts.

Kentucky Coffeetree is tolerant of urban conditions, is deer resistant, is relatively insect and disease free, and serves well as a shade tree in yards, parks, or along boulevards.

The name “coffeetree” comes from settlers using the seeds for a coffee substitute. Native Americans also used the roasted seeds for beverages and food. While it is native to parts of Wisconsin, it is fairly uncommon in native stands here.

While you may be able to find a few of the trees that produce the seed pods in Waukesha, we select the cultivars that don’t produce seeds when planting along streets. We have planted varieties aptly named Espresso, Skinny Latte, and Decaf.

Waukesha’s Tree Population by Species

Your Parks Recreation & Forestry Board is composed of six citizen members and two members of the Common Council, all appointed by the Mayor, and confirmed by the Common Council. The Board governs and manges the public parks, parkways, recreational property, recreation activities and urban forestry program (ie. street trees) that reflect the needs and interest of all residents.

The Board typically meets once a month at 5:30 pm in Common Council Chambers at City Hall. Please feel free to attend any upcoming meeting date found on the website.
