Free Trauma Sensitive Yoga
Everyone in the community is welcome A trauma informed approach to yoga makes practice safer and more accessible through intentional language and movement. A certified yoga therapist has received additional training around potential trauma triggers in certain demographics as compared to standard certification. When we live through traumatic experiences, as our community has done, it changes how we interact with the world. Our minds may adapt by reliving the past, disconnecting from our bodies, or becoming hyper alert of what might happen in the future. As adaptations help us survive traumatic experiences, they can make it hard to live in the present and feel like we’re in control of our lives. In this class, participants will be guided through gentle moving yoga poses that will help you strengthen your body, be mindful of your breath and help build energy.
Everyone welcome – most people experience or will experience a traumatic event at some point in their lives. Participants are welcome to participate in a chair or mat (please bring your own) as modifications will be made.

Why do we plant trees that heave sidewalks?
This is a question we have heard with some frequency this year. While I wish we could eliminate the interaction between the two, the fact is that in a city, we need both, and space is finite. Waukesha has a tree planting ordinance that is in part to promote and enhance the beauty and general welfare of the city. But more than that, trees are an appreciating asset. This means as trees grow larger, the benefits they provide increase as well. Because of this, we want trees to live to their fullest potential.
Some of the benefits of trees include:
- Increasing property values up to 15%.
- Reducing summer temperatures.
- Decreasing air conditioning use and energy consumption.
- Removing and storing carbon from the atmosphere and returning oxygen.
- Reducing water runoff and flooding.
- Capturing airborne pollutants.
- Promoting physical and mental health.
- Increasing the lifespan of asphalt roads.
sidewalk. Occasionally for safety reasons, trees do need to be removed before sidewalks can be replaced. We work with our partners in the engineering department to identify ways to reduce this from occurring as much as possible. Occasionally as roads are reconstructed, they can be narrowed to allow more room for trees to grow. We are also experimenting with physical root barriers which redirect root growth.
The natural disaster that Emerald Ash Borer caused has highlighted the need for us to diversify our urban forest. We are evaluating new species to plant as well as increasing planting of underutilized trees. This includes investing in trees that may be slower growing and therefore reducing root interactions with sidewalks. The one thing we don’t want to do is find that “one perfect tree” and over plant it.
As a living organism, trees will do all they can to survive, including at times, growing roots under sidewalks. In my career in the field, I have witnessed both small trees that do impact sidewalks as well as large trees that don’t impact sidewalks. In the end, the benefits that city trees provide outweigh the occasional need for sidewalk replacement.

We currently manage over 24,000 trees on city streets. Like all infrastructure, maintenance is necessary. One part of urban tree maintenance does include the need to remove and replace sidewalks adjacent to trees is needed. When this is necessary, we do evaluate the site to determine what course of action is necessary. Sometimes, new sidewalks are narrowed around trees to allow for more room to grow. In some instances, roots will need to be pruned to replace the Donate ONLINE at: waukeshafoundation.org

CITY OF WAUKESHA
WAUKESHA CURRENT
GARBAGE AND RECYCLING TRANSITION
Beginning March 31, 2025, the City of Waukesha will have a new garbage and recycling hauling company for eligible residential properties. Through a competitive bidding process, John’s Disposal was selected for the next contract for hauling once the current contract ends with Waste Management.
The current contractor, Waste Management, will continue services through Friday, March 28, 2025.
When the new contract begins, pickup schedules will remain widely unchanged, with the possibility of small adjustments in select locations. Garbage will still be picked up weekly and recycling will be picked up every other week. Notice will be given to any property if its pickup day changes.
A significant part of this transition will include delivery of new carts for properties with automated pickup and retrieval of the existing carts. More information will be coming out in the new year regarding carts.
Another significant change will be with bulky item pickups. When the new contract begins, residents will have to call to schedule and pay for a bulky item pickup. This will also apply to appliances. Visit the website at waukesha-wi.gov/wastetransition for more details.
DROP-OFF CENTER WINTER HOURS
The City Drop-Off Center is now on operating on its winter hour schedule. The Drop-Off center is ONLY open on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from December through March.

YOU LOVE THEM, LICENSE THEM
The City of Waukesha requires that all dogs and cats ages 5 months or older to be licensed every year and have a current rabies vaccine. The deadline to license your pets is March 31st.
Applications and additional information can be found on the City website at waukesha-wi.gov/pets
Top Reasons to License Your Pets:
It greatly increases your chances of finding a lost pet if it goes missing.
It lets law enforcement know your animal is up to date on its rabies vaccine.
Animal license fees fund animal cruelty, abuse, and neglect investigations.
State law and City ordinance requires dogs (City Code §33.02) and cats (City Code §33.03) to be licensed.

SHOVEL MORE. SALT LESS
PARADE MEMORIAL DEDICATION
Thanks to everyone who came out for the dedication of the Parade Memorial at Grede Park. The Memorial is now open for public viewing as a public park. As you visit, we ask that you continue to respect the space and the many impacted lives it represents.
As part of an ongoing effort to reduce the amount of salt that ends up in our water systems, here are a few tips to help you conserve salt during the snowy season.
1. Clear walkways and other areas before snow turns to ice. The more snow you remove, the less salt you’ll need to use and the more effective it will be.
2. If you use salt, scatter it so there is space between the grains. One coffee mug of salt is enough for a 20-foot driveway or 10 sidewalk squares.
3. When temperatures drop below 15°F, salt becomes ineffective. Switch to sand for traction or a different ice melting agent that works at lower temperature.
To the thousands of donors and contractors who contributed to this project—thank you!

MAJOR DONORS:
CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION
The Public Works Department will be collecting trees at the curb in January. Please set out your Christmas trees on the same day as your garbage collection day. Public Works will collect them as they see them. Trees must be free of lighting, decorations and other objects. Trees should not be in bags, twine or netting. No artificial trees or wreaths will be collected as these items may be put in the regular trash.
During the month of January, you are also welcome to bring Christmas trees to the Drop-Off Center for free.
For more information about the Christmas Tree Collection, please visit: waukesha-wi.gov/treepickup
SNOW SEASON SAFETY REMINDERS
Please remember these tips and rules so we can all have a safe winter season:
Slow Down. Drive slow, use caution, and leave plenty of space between you and other drivers. Give them Room. If you see plows out on the road, give them plenty of space. Plows make frequent stops and turns.
Be Reflective. It's dark outside a lot this time of year. When out exercising in the dark, wear reflective clothing. Don't Throw Snow in the Roads. When you remove snow from your property, it must be kept off the roadway. Clear Your Sidewalks. All sidewalks in front of your home or business should be cleared and kept clear within 12 hours after the snow has stopped falling.
Be Patient. During a storm, crews will be out working. They start with main streets, hills, intersections, bus routes, railroad crossings and school areas. Once those are cleaned, they move on to flat streets, cul-de-sacs and alleyways. They will get to all areas. Please be patient.
If Your Car is Running, Be In The Car. Many cars are reported stolen during the winter as owners leave them running to warm up with the keys in the ignition.
CLEAR AROUND YOUR FIRE HYDRANT
The Waukesha Fire Department is requesting all homeowners to take a moment to find the nearest fire hydrant. During the winter, we encourage you to team up with your neighbors to "adopt" a hydrant and keep it accessible throughout the season.
With 3,557 hydrants in the City, we rely on residents to help ensure they're clear of snow. In an emergency, every second counts, and your efforts to keep the hydrant visible and accessible could be crucial for your safety and your neighbors.
WINTER PARKING REMINDERS
The Waukesha Police Department wants to remind everyone about the City parking rules and regulations. This is especially important during the winter months as crews work to keep the roads clear of snow and ice.
If you have City overnight parking permit, night parking is restricted to even numbered sides of the street on even days and odd numbered sides of the street on odd days. The date after midnight will determine the even or odd numbered day. Parking permits are not valid during a snow emergency.
If the City issues a snow emergency, no vehicles are allowed to park on a City streets. If you require overnight parking during a snow emergency, you will be able to utilize the following parking ramps:
Transit Center Parking Ramp (212 E St. Paul Ave.)
South Street Parking Ramp (241 South Street)
Having cars removed from the road allows the City crews the ability to fully clear the roads and make sure they are passable, especially for emergency vehicles. If a snow emergency is declared, the City will post the information on the City website and City social media channels. The local media will also be alerted so you should also see where they display closure information.

“Guess How Much I Love You” Family Adventure Walk
Join us for a 1.7-mile adventure walk with fun activity stations just in time for the spring season! Each family will receive a copy of Guess How Much I Love You, a story of Nutbrown Hares trying to find a way to measure the unmeasurable. A beautifully illustrated book for children and adults alike. Stations include learning about rabbit ears at a petting station, making your own hare ears, seeing how high you can reach on a rock climbing wall, measuring your arm distance, seeing how high you can jump on a small trampoline, sending a duck down the river in a special race, making a special to the Moon and Back gift, and more.
The Adventure Walk will take place rain or shine! Registration includes one copy of “Guess How Much I Love You” book, crafts, and activities. Pre-registration is required. Family fee is for a family of five.
