Summer Events Fun Guide Inside (Center)

Mayor Welcome, Summer 2022 As our Wisconsin weather warms up with summer just around the corner, it is important that we remember to schedule in some time to play! It’s not only great for our mental and physical health, but connection with community is a vital component in our lives. As you flip through the pages in this activity guide you will discover many opportunities for play no matter your age. Now is the time to get out to our City parks! I encourage you to participate in our new Waukesha Playground Passport program in partnership with ProHealth Care featured on the back cover. Print a playground passport online or pick one up at the Park Offices (1900 Aviation Drive).Visit each of the City’s 31 playgrounds over the next 31 weeks, answer questions specific to each playground and earn prizes! As a bonus, every Tuesday we will feature a park on the City’s Facebook page (@CityofWaukesha) with a chance to win a prize. For an enhanced play experience at the playground, sign your children up for a summer playground program. In these programs, playground leaders will engage children in games and many other opportunities for fun! Adults will also love our parks including our THRIVE fitness equipment at the Frame Park playground (page 3). Add fun to your fitness routine by activating the QR code at the park. This action will unlock awesome ideas on how to use the THRIVE equipment. Everyone is sure to find fun at our City of Waukesha pools this summer. Whether you enjoy lap swimming, slides, aqua jogging, or open swimming, take advantage of our spectacular pools! Pool passes are available for groups or individuals and can be purchased online or in-person at the pools or at the main office. Don’t forget to sign your children up for swimming lessons. Our American Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructors will give your children a fun swimming lesson experience along with helping to develop a love of the water that will last a lifetime. The Les Paul Performance Center in Downtown’s Cutler Park will also come alive again this summer with Monday Night at the Movies, Tribute Tuesday Concerts and Civic Band Concerts. Come over and enjoy the entertainment with all your friends and family. We can’t wait to see you there. Remember, for the young and the young at heart to make play a part of your day. See you at the park! Have a great summer! Sincerely, Mayor Reilly

THRIVE Fitness Equipment – “Adult Playground” at Frame Park

Frame Park playground is the first National Demonstration Site to earn all four designations in the entire nation! The designations include: Nature Grounds, Outdoor Adult Fitness Parks, Play On! Promoting Physical Activity and Seven Principles of Inclusive Playground Design. Each designation was developed using evidence-based best practices in design and implementation, curriculum, programs, and research on these categories by various educational institutions. Frame Park Playground is our largest community playground and was 25 years old at the time of reconstruction in 2019. The picture on the front cover is demonstrating the use of the “THRIVE Fitness Equipment”. This “Adult Playground” enables users to get a workout while the littles are playing on the remaining equipment.

Remember to scan the QR Code located on a sign near the THRIVE equipment and participate in a short survey. This is a national survey, and your assistance is particularly helpful. For those that have previously participated, we have discovered that most users average 45-60 minutes at the playground and come more than once per week! These are great statistics as we continue to design and plan playgrounds for use in the future!

BRANCHING OUT

Emerald Ash Borer “He’s back!” may refer to Jack Nicholson in the movie “The Shining”, but in the case of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), it’s a case that the borer has not gone anywhere. The City of Waukesha first detected EAB in a Frame Park tree in 2013 and the invasive insect continues to be the biggest factor in determining how WPRF crews maintain the City’s 24,428 street trees and 3,192 managed park trees. Of those 27,620 trees, approximately 3,500 ash trees remain from a pre-EAB high of approximately 6,500 ash trees. From a historical perspective, the City began treating ash trees to control EAB in 2010, combining soil treatments on smaller diameter trees and trunk injections on larger trees. The intent was never to “save” all 6,500 ash trees. Larger trees, especially those on major roadways and streets with mostly/all ash trees were targeted for long term protection. Through the years, smaller trees, trees in poorer condition and those on mixed species streets have been targeted for removal. Additionally, the City began our injections on a once every four-year cycle, realizing this was a compromise between the extremes of removing all ash trees in advance of the borer’s appearance (impractical and undesirable) and injecting all trees more often (impossible from staffing/budgetary considerations). With the passage of time, we are seeing mortality on trees that have been injected, some even twice, but once every four years. These trees are removed as quickly as possible, keeping in mind that EAB is not the only thing that causes tree mortality and the need to maintain the 24,000+ non-ash trees citywide. So where is the City headed with ash and EAB management? Regrettably, there are not sufficient native predators to control EAB in America, as there are in its native region in China and Korea. With that in mind, any ash tree that is desirable to keep will need to be treated for years to come. The plan is to further reduce the ash population and to replace as many of the trees with a diverse palette of trees to prevent or lessen the impact of the next invasive (or native) pest(s). This spring WPRF crews will be planting 33 varieties of trees, two of which have never been planted before. The other good news is that with the reduced number of ash trees, we are now injecting every three years. Additionally, a new chemical formulation was put into use a couple of years ago that drastically reduced the time needed to inject trees. The time saved can then be utilized for pruning and other tree maintenance needs. Any tree determined to not be worthy of a scheduled treatment is put on a removal list and replaced if possible. Why not just “cut them all down”? Ash trees, like all trees, while needing maintenance, have many benefits. Those benefits include, but are not limited to, stormwater reduction, temperature moderation and associated reduced energy costs, sound reduction, cleaner air, wildlife habitat, esthetics and what is becoming more understood and valued, health benefits to those living near trees. Generally, the larger the tree, the greater its value and the benefits it provides. Many of the City ash trees are decades old and continue to provide value. The cost of treatment is very small, compared to the benefits received. Additionally, the cost to remove and eventually replace a tree is part of the overall equation. It would take decades to achieve the size and benefits of the trees removed. The final number of ash trees that the City will maintain has not been determined yet, however, we will do all that we can to protect as many trees as practical for them to continue their contribution to the City of Waukesha’s Urban Forest, the only city asset that grows!
