Parks and Recreation Commission Our Commission members are volunteers who work together to represent the community’s parks and recreation needs. Through monthly meetings, park visits, and event volunteering, they are the voices who help to shape programs and influence the purchase, development, maintenance, proposed uses, supervision and regulation of public park and recreation areas and facilities located in the Municipality. Members meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 and all meetings are open to the public.

Registration System The Recreation Department’s online registration system found at www.murrysvilleparecreation.com allows guests to register for recreation programs, reserve facilities, request field permits, no-lien letters and buy the Municipal street map. Fall and Winter 2021-2022 Recreation Programs Park Hopper Challenge Dates: Now until December 31 Fee: FREE Participating Communities: City of Greensburg, Hempfield, Latrobe, Municipality of Murrysville, North Huntingdon Twp., Penn Trafford, Sewickley Township, Westmoreland County Parks and the Westmoreland Land Trust.

If you love being outside and visiting new parks, then check out the new Park Hopper Challenge brought to you by the Murrysville Recreation Department and the Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation Alliance (WCPRA). The Park Hopper Challenge is a free, fun, family-oriented challenge to get everyone outside exploring the many local community parks throughout Westmoreland County. Local parks provide such a wide variety of amenities, this Challenge is a fantastic opportunity to take advantage of all that is offered.

THE CHALLENGE: Visit all the parks and trails showcased in the following communities before December 31: City of Greensburg, Hempfield, Latrobe, Municipality of Murrysville, North Huntingdon Twp., Penn Trafford, Sewickley Township, Westmoreland County Parks and the Westmoreland Land Trust.

Registration is free on the event website and participation is at your own pace.

HOW DOES THE CHALLENGE WORK? It is really easy. Go to the race website, runsignup.com then search Park Hopper Challenge, click on “Parks to Explore” tab at the top of the page, find a park, and go explore!

All you do is explore the parks listed on the website or other parks throughout Westmoreland County then, after your walk, run, hike, bike ride or whatever you decide to do, come back to the website and record what you did. You can enter distance, time, elevation, and post photos of your park visits. Each time you login your visits, the website will track your progress and you will be able to see where others are going, too!

If you did something spectacular, share it. If you found a cool stream, share it. Let everyone know about all the awesome parks and places we have in our neighborhoods!

The Fall Treasure Hunt season will help kids ages 1-8 and their grownups discover the treasures around us and support kids in developing focus — a core Tinkergarten (and life!) skill! Nazi Saboteurs at Horseshoe Curve During WWII Date: October 13 Time: 6:30 p.m.

Fee: Free Location: Murrysville Municipal Building, Council Chambers Ken Serfass, a professional living historian, returns for another fascinating presentation on the Nazi Saboteurs at Horseshoe Curve During WWII. Ken visited us earlier this year as Ulysses S. Grant but this fall he will join us to give us insight on how the Nazis tried to cripple key points in the U.S. infrastructure during WWII by destroying key targets, one of them being the Horseshoe Curve located in Altoona, Pa. Ken will delve into this plan, known as “Operation Pastorius”, and how it was foiled in Altoona by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Murrysville Recreation Department and Westmoreland Conservancy is challenging the community to explore 12 miles in the parks.

Join Murrysville’s 12 for 12 Challenge! You will have the months of January, February, and March to walk, bike, hike, or run 12 miles in Murrysville’s Parks, Westmoreland Heritage Trail, or any Westmoreland Conservancy Reserve property. In this FREE virtual challenge participants are to complete the 12 miles on their own time. Over- achievers can track as many miles in 12 weeks as possible! Hot Chocolate Hike Date: TBD Time: TBD Fee: Free Location: Morosini Reserve Join the Murrysville Recreation Department and Westmoreland Conservancy for a hot chocolate hike on the beautiful Morosini Reserve. The hike will begin on the all-pedestrian trail, which is an ADA trail, and then pick up another trail and continue up and through the reserve. After the hike we’ll enjoy some delicious hot chocolate.

Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate hiking shoes.

First Day Hike Date: Saturday, January 1 Time: 9:00 a.m.

Location: Valley Trail, Murrysville Community Park by Soccer Field 3 Kick off the New Year right and join the Murrysville Recreation Department on a First Day hike on the Valley Trail located in Murrysville Community Park. The trail entrance and parking are located by soccer field 3. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate hiking shoes. The Valley Trail is for all ages. The following information and procedures apply to programs offered by the Municipality of Murrysville Recreation Department. Complete policy at www.murrysville.com Questions: 724-327-2100, Ext. 131 or 115 Refund Policy. Refunds will be given only if a program is cancelled and not rescheduled. There will be no refunds given for programs otherwise, unless there is a medical reason. A 10% administration fee will be charged if a refund is given. A registrant cannot transfer his/her right to attend a program to another person.

Resident Registration: All persons who pay their taxes to the Municipality of Murrysville pay resident fees.

Non-Resident Registration: Non-residents are all persons who pay taxes to any other Municipality, Borough, or Township. Non-residents are required to add a $5.00 surcharge per registration when registering.

Register Early: Don’t let a class be cancelled because everyone waited until the last minute to register. Registrations will be placed in the order they are received. A late fee will apply at the date noted in the class description. Walk in registrations will incur a $10.00 fee. For mail in registrations, please use one registration form for each individual participant. You may register each person for more than one class on the same form.

Payment: Mail in, drop off or online registration is available. Checks or money orders must be made payable to the Municipality of Murrysville (MOM). For credit cards, register online at http://murrysvilleparecreation.com/ and select online registration. A single payment may be made for all family members.

Attendance. Attend the first class as scheduled. NOTIFICATIONS WILL BE MADE ONLY IF A CLASS IS FILLED, POSTPONED OR CANCELLED. If you register online or include an e-mail address on application, you will be notified by e-mail of registration.

Class Cancellations. The Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel, postpone or reschedule any class that does not meet the minimum number of class participants. The Recreation Department also reserves the right to wait to cancel a class up to 2 days before the class is scheduled if the class does not meet the minimum number of participants. Every effort will be made to reschedule sessions due to unanticipated events or instructor illness. Rescheduling is not guaranteed.

Weather Related Cancellations of Single Classes: Cancellations will be announced on the Department Facebook Page, Murrysville Recreation Department. Channel 19 may also include cancellations. Feel free to call our office any time prior to 5:00 to confirm program status.

Insurance. The municipality does not carry insurance to cover hospitalization or medical costs for persons injured during the course of participating in or viewing of any of MOM’s programs or events. All participants enter programs at their own risk.

Accessibility. People with disabilities who require special accommodations that are registering for classes must contact the recreation office prior to the start of class so appropriate preparations can be made.

Special Events Trick or Treat on the Trail, Saturday, October 30 The third annual Trick or Treat on the Trail for ages 10 and under will be held on Saturday, October 30 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on the Westmoreland Heritage Trail, Murrysville Community Center location. This is a FREE event, but PRE-REGISTRATION is required. Come dressed in costume and trick or treat on the trail, collecting treats provided by local businesses and organizations.

Pre-Registration opens on Friday, October 1. To Pre-Register, please visit www.murrysvilleparecreation.com and select Online Registration. This is first come first served for the first 250 children.

If you have a business or organization interested in participating in Trick or Treat on the Trail or Santa at Sardis, please contact the Murrysville Recreation Department at 724-327-2100 ext. 131 for more information. This is a great opportunity for facetime with the community.

Santa at Sardis, Saturday, December 4 Join us for our second annual Santa at Sardis on Saturday, December 4 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. for campfires and s’mores, a bonfire, hot cocoa and cookies, and socially distanced pictures with SANTA himself! Sardis Park is located at Rocky Hill Lane.

March for Parks Save the Date: Saturday, March 26 The March for Parks is helping to shape active and healthy spaces across Westmoreland County! What is the March for Parks?

The March is a fun way to raise money for park and trail improvements in Westmoreland County; Marchers collect donations prior to the event as a team or individually and turn them in the day of the March to be eligible for cool prizes! Gather your friends, families, and co-workers and march for your school, church, business, or in memory of a loved one. Even if you prefer not to march, join us for a morning of fun – there will be raffles, music, prizes, light food & refreshments, games, activities, and more!

Special Events Egg My Yard Date: TBD Spring 2022 (Week before Easter) Fee: TBD Location: Those who live within the FRSD Egg My Yard will be back again in April 2022! We want to egg your yard for your very own private egg hunt! Recreation staff and volunteers will visit your home to hide candy stuffed eggs in your front yard.

You’ll be provided with a date and estimated time of the “egging” once registered. This event is open to those who live within the Franklin Regional School District (Murrysville, Delmont, and Export). Do you have a special skill or certification? Have you always wanted to share this skill with adults or children, dreamed about teaching a class and now you finally have time? The Recreation Department is always looking for new classes to offer and we need qualified instructors. Topics may include music, fitness, art, nature, or your own favorite hobby; the more creative the better! Call us to discuss volunteering; paid seasonal and parttime positions are also available!

Our beautiful parks and trails are maintained by volunteers, with larger projects provided by public works. Help us keep the parks beautiful by volunteering to plant flowers, clear a trail, pick up trash, or be a greeter at our Visitor Center along the Westmoreland Heritage Trail. Call us to learn how easy it is for you, your family, your students, your coworkers to give just an hour. The possibilities are endless!

Murrysville Senior Citizen Center The Murrysville Senior Citizen Center is open! Located at 3091 Carson Ave. Murrysville, PA 15668 the senior center is open to anyone aged 55 and over. Yearly membership is available at a minimal cost. The senior center hosts many weekly activities along with monthly lunches and parties.

The Municipal digital sign is available to any group (not associated with a commercial entity or business) to advertise events for a fee of $35.00. The event listing cannot include a business name, regardless of the purpose.

Murrysville Municipal staff would like to congratulate Diane Heming on her retirement and 29 years of service to the Murrysville Community. Diane started on December 28, 1992, to serve as the Finance Director for the Municipality of Murrysville. Through her many great years of service as Finance Director, Diane has also taken on many roles here in Murrysville. She’s served as interim Chief Administrator, committee member, human resources director, interior designer, project manager, dedicated recreation volunteer, gardener, stray pet advocate, crafter extraordinaire and, of course, a great friend and coworker. Diane will spend her time in retirement enjoying her river house in West Newton, traveling, and spending time with family, friends, and her pet rabbit River. We wish Diane the very best in her retirement and we will miss her very much.

2021 Curbside Leaf Recycling Republic Services, the Municipality of Murrysville’s trash/ recycling hauler, will conduct municipal-wide sweeps to collect leaf and yard waste. To schedule a pick-up on one of the collection dates listed below, please contact Republic Services at 877-788-9400 (Toll-Free). Residents who do not wish to schedule a pick-up may simply place the leaf bags at the curb on the evening prior to one or all the collection dates.

Fall 2021 Saturday, October 16 Saturday, November 13 Saturday, December 11 Leaves must be placed in biodegradable leaf bags. Leaves placed in plastic bags or any other container will not be picked up. Please do not place grass clippings, trash, recycling materials, or any other refuse in the biodegradable leaf bags.

These bags will hold approximately 30 gallons/50 pounds of leaves. Each package of bags contains five (5) bags and can be purchased at local hardware/home improvement stores.

Yard waste must be tied into bundles and placed at the curb alongside the biodegradable bags. Yard waste means small twigs and brush that cannot exceed 3 inches in diameter and 48 inches in length. Republic Services will not be responsible for clean-up of leaves and/or yard waste disturbed or scattered by weather, animals, or other causes.

Glass Recycling and Food Pantry “Pop-Up” Event Saturday, December 18 Recycle your glass bottles while supporting the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry!

Quarterly glass recycling “pop-up” drive-thru events are held throughout the year at 4200 Sardis Road, next to the Veterans Field/Public Works building.

These events also support the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry by accepting non-perishable food donations.

December 18 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. is the next scheduled date. Guests can enter the parking lot, pass their non-perishable food donations to the food pantry volunteers, and pull forward to the recycling drop off without a need to leave their vehicle.

All colors of empty glass bottles, jars and jugs will be accepted. Any other types of glass will NOT be accepted.

Glass Recycling Republic Services no longer accepts glass as part of the recycling stream. However, Westmoreland Cleanways Recycling Center located at 355 Pleasant Unity Mutual Road Greensburg, Pa., 15601, does accept certain types of glass. Call them at 724-8794020 to learn what is accepted and not accepted. This is a FREE service to the public.

Murrysville MS4 Program MS4 is an acronym for Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System. An MS4 is an NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permit that the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) issues to municipalities. The purpose of the MS4 permit is to reduce the amount of sediment and pollution that enters surface and ground water from storm sewer systems to the maximum extent practicable. Murrysville has developed an MS4 Program to meet the requirements of this permit. As a resident of Murrysville you are part of this program.

The permit requires the involvement of all Murrysville residents, businesses, schools and community groups.

Since stormwater can become contaminated during overland flow, pollutants are likely to end up in local waterways. These pollutants could include pesticides, fertilizers, sediment, oil and grease among others that impact the quality of local waterways.

Residents and contractors can reduce these pollutants and sediment by not stockpiling mulch, topsoil and stone or blowing grass clippings and leaves on municipal roads.

As part of the Municipality’s authorization to discharge stormwater to local waterways, the Municipality of Murrysville must maintain NPDES permit coverage and a stormwater management program, which is required by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and is intended to improve the water quality by reducing the discharge of pollutants to the maximum extent possible.

Residents can also find “A Homeowner’s Guide to Stormwater Management” located on the Westmoreland County Conservation District’s website at www.wcdpa.com or pick up a copy at the Municipal Building.

Friends of Murrysville Parks 2021 Park Walks The public is invited to join FOMP with “Rain or Shine” on all Saturday Walks throughout the 2021 season. Please wear appropriate clothing and boots. For more information, call (724) 7332770. Masks are required.

FOMP’s mission is to protect and restore native flora and fauna in the Municipal parks of Murrysville for everyone to enjoy” Saturday, Oct. 9: 10:00 a.m. – Mushroom walk in Townsend Park with Richard Jacob, president of the Western PA Mushroom Club. Meet at the upper pavilion and please wear sturdy shoes and use a walking stick to navigate the steep hills.

Saturday, Oct. 23: 11:00 a.m. – Nature walk in Duff Park with Dr. Kyle Deliver. Meet in the parking lot.

Sportsmen and Landowners Alliance of Murrysville (S.L.A.M.) S.L.A.M. is an organization that serves the community and sportsmen through projects and education with dedication to conservation, hunting, fishing, and shooting sports as well as environmental and historical preservation. SLAM stocks Haymaker Run yearly to encourage youth fishing. Fishing at Haymaker Run, which is located across the street from the Murrysville Municipal building, is open to youth fishing only.

Hunter Trapper Education Hunter Trapper Education classes, or HTE, sponsored by S.L.A.M. (Sportsmen and Landowners Alliance of Murrysville) Classes will be held at Murrysville District Sportsmen’s Association: 3751 Gun Club Road, Murrysville. Register early as class sizes are limited to 55.

Classes are at no cost to students but students must bring a lunch. Water & soft drinks will be available. Students must register for a class at the PA Game Commission web site at WWW.PGC.STATE.PA.US .

Murrysville Community Library Children’s Programs Toddler Time Toddler Time, for children ages 24 months - 36 months and caregivers, will be held Wednesdays at 10:00am from September 8th through October 13th. Sessions last approximately 45 minutes and include age-appropriate stories, literacy activities, and a theme-related craft for each caregiver and child to make together.

Preschool Storytime Preschool Storytime, for children ages 3-6 years old and caregivers, will be held Thursdays at 10:00am from September 9th through October 14th. Each 45-minute session includes stories, songs, and much more derived from the Every Child Ready to Read model to help build early literacy skills. Storytime activities consist of 30 minutes and are followed by 15 minutes of a craft or fine motor skill-building activity.

Dog Reading Pals Children are invited to practice reading aloud to therapy dogs on October 8, November 12, and December 10 from 4:00-5:00pm. The Dog Reading Pals program is designed to help emerging readers gain confidence by reading aoud to a non-judgmental therapy dog pal. Prereaders are welcome too!

Star Wars Day @ the Library Children of all ages are invited to join the library Saturday, October 9th in celebrating all things Star Wars! Costumed characters from Starkiller Garrison, the Western PA Chapter of the 501st Legion will make an appearance from 11:00 am - 12:00 noon and Star Wars-themed activities will be held throughout the library from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.

Mother Goose on the Loose Mother Goose on the Loose is a fun-filled 30 minute interactive series for babies and toddlers ages 0-3 years old and their caregivers on Mondays, November 1, 8, 15, and 22 at 10:00 am. MGOTL uses rhymes, songs, puppets, musical instruments, and more to stimulate early learning and encourage bonding between children and their caregivers.

Westmoreland Conservancy is an accredited all-volunteer land trust centered in Murrysville, Pennsylvania, about 20 miles East of Pittsburgh in Westmoreland County. The Westmoreland Conservancy’s mission is to preserve, enhance, and connect land, habitat and green space through acquisition, stewardship, and cooperation with local communities and other organizations. In addition to the initial acquisition of the 52-acre Lillian Kellman Reserve, WC has protected 528 acres in 8 reserves in Murrysville/Penn Twp./Salem Twp. Murrysville Community Center

Security Deposits

The Community Center is a perfect location for meetings, banquets, showers, birthday parties, memorial services and more. The large 30’ x 80’ room can seat 120 and includes a full kitchen, tables and chairs.

The security deposit fee is in addition to the rental fee.

These funds are held at our office until after your event in case there are damages or additional cleaning is needed. If the facility is found in good condition, the security deposit is returned to the renter.

How to Reserve a Park Pavilion or the Community Center: Online: Visit www.murrysvilleparecreation.com and select Rentals to select your facility. Once selected, choose Reserve Online, then follow the prompts. Creating an account will be necessary if you do not have one.

By Mail: Please complete a registration form and mail with a check to Municipality of Murrysville. Printable registration forms can be found on our website www.murrysvilleparecreation.com under Facilities, or in our municipal lobby.

In Person: Visit the municipal building, 4100 Sardis Road, to complete a registration form. Office hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

All checks should be payable to Municipality of Murrysville

Security deposits must be paid by cash or check only and must be received by mail or in person within 3 business days that the rental was made or the reservation will be cancelled.

Alcohol Permits For those who wish to secure an alcohol permit for the Community Center, Townsend Park or Sardis Park, a permit must be obtained when making your online reservation or by visiting the Municipal Building to complete the appropriate paperwork to secure the permit. There is a $50.00 application fee and a $350.00 refundable deposit required within 3 business days of the day the request was made or the request will be cancelled.
