Medi Spa is your premier Westchester County Medical Spa, providing the Ultimate Quick Lift. Medical Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical procedure which gently resurfaces the skin. Performed with medical grade crystals which brush against the surface of the skin removing dead and damaged skin cells. DINING Guide WINE FINDS It’s time to check out the new Rose wines. Here are two from different parts of France. One a touch sweet and one dry. Enjoy! ROSE Cotes de Provence 2014, Chateau du Rouet (FR) Cotes de Provence is located in south-east France, an area known for Rose wines. This selection has a soft salmon color and a bouquet of tiny strawberries and raspberries. The palate is generous with good flavors of strawberry and melon. You will find the characteristics of the grapes, 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah. It is a dry wine ideal for a light meal. The Chateau Du Rouet has been in the same family since the French Revolution and they bottle their Reservee Traditional in the attractive traditional regional wine bottle. ROSE D’ANJOU 2013, Marechal (FR) Another good source of Rose wines is the Loire Valley located in the very heart of France. This Rose has a soft pink blush and the bouquet is light and hints of strawberry. The palate is freshand juicy with flavors of cranberry and has a gentle sweetness. Nice, generous finish. The grapes are Grolleau (30%) and Cabernet Franc (70%) and these are synonymous in the production of Roses from that area. Great summer wine and perfect for outdoor entertaining served with fresh fruit and little nibbles. Both wines were purchased from local wine merchants and are priced under $15 the bottle.

Tell us what inspired you to open The Lighthouse and explain its mission? The Lighthouse Retreat and Wellness Center was born after I started a journey to transform my own life. I had successfully created the life I thought I wanted, working as an executive in corporate America and traveling the world. I made a place for myself among interesting powerful people and loved it. But after 20 years my love for it started to fade away. All my life people came to me for help with their problems and life issues. I was often instinctively able to provide a healing influence, those experiences gave me my deepest satisfaction. By becoming a Reiki Master, I was on the path to being a helper and healer. Reiki works with the sacred energy that animates every living thing; learning to sense, harmonize and unblock that energy promotes healing and health. A Reiki treatment has a positive effect on the whole person: the body, emotions, mind and spirit. It provides healing benefits for many conditions, emotional and physical, from lack of confidence to broken bones and cancer. After becoming a Reiki Master, I earned a master’s degree and license in Clinical Social Work. My clients get the benefit of both, and each discipline increases the healing power of the other. Whether people have health issues, emotional issues, or need support in making positive changes in their lives, I can help them learn the tools to help themselves. I’ve worked with children and families coping with trauma, poverty or disability. The women’s groups and

M.O.M Magazine gets indepth with The Lighthouse, Retreat and What are some of your most popular programs and events? Wellness Center. Catherine LCSW specializes in helping people transform their lives. Cathy AnesiAnesi, is a Licensed Our Woman’s transformational Clinical Social Worker, a Reiki Master, and cognitive groups and retreats are our most popular programs. TIME is a group that behavioral therapist helps woman identify the negative www.thelighthouseretreat.com beliefs that hold them back in life and retreats I’ve led have provided transformational support to hundreds of women. I became certified in EMDR therapy, a discipline that focuses on healing and recovery from PTSD and other trauma. The Lighthouse Retreat and Wellness Center brings together remarkable healers who have mastered an enormous range of healing modalities.

“My dream was to create a comforting and supportive place where many healing disciplines are available – and affordable – to all. That dream has come true.” Top tips for people to live a more spiritually centered life? The number one tip to live a more spiritually centered life is to connect with yourself by taking really good care of yourself. When I meet my clients for the first time, most of them have no idea how to take care of themselves or what they want for themselves. My suggestions to all of my clients is to spend some time alone each day (at least 15 minutes), to connect with your inner self to re-discover who you really are. Feelings may surface which may be uncomfortable, however, that is a good thing. Only when we slow down and feel our feelings thoroughly will they be able to pass. Issues will miraculously disappear. This is also a time to have gratitude and to set intentions for your life. Energy follows intention. When you consciously set intentions life will move in more predictable ways. I also suggest that you consider yourself in all situations. Many have the tendency to “people please”, where they are more concerned about others feelings rather than their own. Although there are times when we want to put others first, it becomes dysfunctional when people pleasing becomes epidemic.

make peace with them. It is an eight session group culminating with an in house retreat where we create vision boards. The Ultimate Self Care Retreats take women away for a weekend in order to reconnect with themselves. They are taught tools to help them to stay connected when they get home. They are relaxing and transformative. In April I am partnering with Alison Jolicoeur our health coach in the new group called “Awaken Your True Self Through the Chakra’s”. In this group we will be combining the emotional piece along with movement and nutrition as we teach about the energy centers in the body called chakras. There will be cooking demo’s, nutritional coaching, yoga, guided meditations, and more. How does The Lighthouse blog help you connect with your clients & community? The Lighthouse blog helps us connect with our clients because it is a way for our clients to understand our perspective on healing and transformation. A client can get more comfortable with our philosophy that the whole person needs to be considered and treated. We care about all aspects of the person, not just the emotional aspects. We also treat the entire family and our therapists are able to confer with each other which facilitates the healing process. What's next on the horizon for The Lighthouse? The Lighthouse will continue to bring the most skilled and professional therapists with expertise in the latest healing modalities. We will be offering more groups-children’s, men’s, couples, and parenting. We will also be expanding our retreat offerings to couples and men’s retreats. contact: lisa@momoffersmore.com

Why Nabby? Established in 1940, Camp Nabby is a traditional 8 week summer day camp for children between the ages of 3.5 to 13. The mission at Camp Nabby is to educate and inspire young people and their families to choose healthy, playful lives. There are 5 programs at Nabby: Pre-K, Juniors, Seniors, Leaders-In-Training, and Counselors-InTraining - all designed to reflect our core values: education, fitness, laughter, and play. Each program is divided into groups that are supervised by our qualified staff-mostly educators and coaches from the surrounding Northern Westchester community.

ail, Nature Center 17 Acres, Hiking Tr “It’s all about the kids!” This isn’t just a fun rallying cry; it’s a way of thinking. And it influences how we approach just about everything here at camp. We work year-round to shape our programs, our schedules and our staff to reflect the simple reality that camp revolves around happy children, and nothing else.

3 Basketball Cou rts, 2 Dodgeball Courts, Gymnast ics, Floor Hocke y Epic Eight Every Wednesday the entire co-ed senior camp community comes together to strategize, compete, and celebrate. Inspired by traditional color wars, our EE Tournament splits camp into 2 Teams (red & white) that battle it out over 8 weeks in 8 epic events.

The Perfect Assistant

M

y daughter and I do a lot of cooking together. There are so many benefits to getting our kids involved in the kitchen, not the least of which is that it provides an activity that we can do together away from all the screens they love!!

When she was really young, I started her off with mixing and pouring. She loved it, and I felt reasonably sure that she was safe doing these things. Of course, I expected that she would make a few messes, and I was ready for that. I even regularly set her up on the floor with a huge towel, lots of bowls, spoons, flour, water, cornstarch and let her go to town!! As she has gotten older, I have found myself struggling with allowing her to do things in the kitchen that she felt she could do. For example, tasks I’m not ready to give up include peeling potatoes, using a julienne cutter, etc. Even cooking teachers, who are moms, are moms first and safety is the foremost on our minds!! I’ve conceded on a few kitchen tasks that she can now do well, and that I have gotten my nerves out of the way to let her try. If you feel comfortable, maybe you can try some of these out. 1) “Washing dishes” This is one that I truly had to work up to. It made me so nervous to allow her access to hot water, breakable dishes and my dish soap! But, with a few modifications, like taking sharp knives away, fragile dishes out and a bit of deep breathing (on my part), I found that she was able to keep the temperature of the water warm, and enjoy the soapy sensation of moving the sponge back and forth on the dishes. She had lots more fun doing the dishes than I ever do! 2) Peeling carrots This is one that she was ready for before I was ready to let her try. Peeling potatoes was tricky and unwieldy because of the shape. But carrots were easier. I showed her how to place the peeler level onto the side of the carrot, and then

page 42

move the peeler away from her fingers towards the table. It was pretty easy for her to glide the peeler down the length of the carrots and I felt safe letting her do it (after some time, if I’m honest). 3) Cracking eggs Perhaps like many of you, I was worried that if I let her crack the egg she would somehow ingest it and wind up with salmonella poisoning! So, my prevention was a bit of scare tactics long before I ever let her touch an egg! I made a BIG deal of how dangerous raw egg is, and how we can NEVER touch raw egg without washing our hands immediately. In my classes, I have a wet wipe at the ready when I let the kids (who have proven themselves to be good listeners) crack an egg. I show the kids how to open the egg like they’re opening a book, and most of the time that works! In time, I know that my daughter and all the other kids I teach will be competent assistants. For now, I know they just want to be near mom and be helpful! And that’s (usually) fine with me! eading news about childhood obesity always makes me worried. The most recent statistics show that at least 42 million children around the world are obese and this figure just continues to grow. This is very alarming because obesity does not only affect a child’s selfesteem and self-image. Most of all, it affects their health, making them more susceptible to diseases that normally manifest during their adult years, such as diabetes, heart problems, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, and many more. Unfortunately, we parents are mostly to be blame for this because we tend to spoil our kids with food and all their other demands just to keep them happy. It is time that we become proactive in keeping our children fit and healthy and here are some tips that I can share with fellow parents. Introduce Kids to Fun Activities Bring them to the beach or to the park instead of letting them stay at home in front of the TV or with their gadgets all day. Outside, they can be physically active and that also gives kids the chance to interact with other kids to improve their social skills. Other great ideas would be to enroll them in interesting classes, like martial arts or dance. Prepare Healthy Dishes Teach your kids to eat healthy food early in life. Fruits and vegetables should constitute a big part of your meals. Avoid taking your kids to fast food places and take extra effort to pack them a healthy lunch during school days to prevent them from buying unhealthy food when they are outside. Of course, our kids will always crave for some junk foods or sugary treats from time to time — as we also do — and there is nothing wrong in giving in to their want sometimes. Just make sure that it is very limited.

page 44

Cut Back On Technology Time If left with their own devices, kids will play video games all day or watch their favorite shows on TV. Be very strict when it comes to this. Set a schedule wherein they are allowed to use their gadgets, such as at most two hours each day. a couch They are supposed to be active — not sitting on for hours. By Kim Bjorge, Photographer, Potter, Wildlife Rehabilitator Get Into Sports This is perhaps the best way to help your kids become fit. Encourage them to join a sport that they are interested in and you can do this by introducing it to them. For instance, bring them to the community center and give them some swimming lessons or bring them along to a baseball game. Once they have chosen a sport of their own liking, give Susanneed Chasen a Certified Nutrition Health Coach them the support they toisfurther boost their&interest and passion. Finally, let us parents be good examples to our kids. By living a healthy lifestyle, we will be unconsciously instilling that kind of habit to our kids, too, and they can carry that until they grow old. In doing so, we are also making the Dr. Barry J Glaser is an orthodontic specialist who practices entire family fit and that may inspire other families to follow suit.

A Spoonful of Sugar

ongs that my kids request me to play over and over inevitably wind up stuck in my head despite my best intentions to keep them separate. A Spoonful of Sugar from Mary Poppins has become part of this repertoire of songs I’ve collected. I’ve realized after listening to the song for the thousandth time, that it contains some important life tidbits on spicing up routine or monotony. In case you’re not familiar, a Spoonful of Sugar, sung by Julie Andrews playing the nanny Mary Poppins sings to her young charges about how to make the chore of cleaning their playroom more enjoyable using the metaphor of medicine to represent the chore or task to be undertaken. The particular lyrics that stick out “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun, you find the fun and snap the job’s a game. Every task you undertake, becomes a piece of cake, a lark, a spree. It’s very clear to see that a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down in the most delightful way.” The song got me thinking about all the mundane chores or tasks we put off or procrastinate from doing and what ways we could inject some fun or lightness into these activities to make the “medicine” more bearable. Small changes can often make the biggest difference in altering a routine or getting out of a rut that you may be in. Taking a different way home , listening to music while you fold

clothes, catching up on the latest show you’ve been binge watching while doing the mound of dishes in the sink, having a work out buddy rather than going it alone, running outside vs. the treadmill at the gym or changing the location of where you eat lunch at work. There’s something to be said for mindfulness and focusing on the task at hand while having no distractions like music or TV but there is also some magic in making tasks seem less burdensome and being able to look at them in a different way. When tasks seem manageable and less like “work” or “exercise”, people for the most part, are more willing to do them.. Look at areas where you may be stuck or dreading activities and think about how you might be able to change it up. Good luck and thank Mary Poppins if you are successful in finding your own spoonful of sugar this week!” Lindsay S. CELEBRATING OUR 70TH YEAR

THE ORGANIC TEACHING KITCHEN GYOF - grow your own food Get Inspired by the Season

M

ay is the month I get inspired to grow my own food. Now more than ever, with our food sources becoming impure by genetically modified foods (GMO’s), pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and the likes, growing your own food (GYOF) affords you high quality, fresh produce. G.Y.O.F. has many benefits. It keeps chemicals off your plate, reduces the impact on the environment, and encourages you to eat healthier, expand your cooking repertoire while inspiring you to try new recipes. Our busy lives often cause good nutrition to fall down on the priority list. Americans eat an average of 4 meals a week at a restaurant or take out. Kids who loathe veggies may be more eager to eat them when they watch them grow. It gives them an understanding of the origins of the food they eat. And if that is not reason enough, it will save you money too! May 10th is Mothers Day. This Mother's Day, give her a gift that keeps on growing, both fragrant and utilitarian too. Take a large basket and simply fill it with herb plants like rosemary, peppermint, sage and basil. Top it Birthday Parties off with a trowel and bow. This can be a daily Girl Scout reminder of how much & Brownie Troops she means to you.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH MIXED HERB PESTO Ingredients: • 2 -cup fresh basil • 1 cup kale • ½ cup chives • ½ cup walnuts • 3 medium garlic cloves, chopped • 1/3 cup EVOO (or to desired consistency) • S/P to taste Directions Add green, walnuts & garlic to food processor. With the motor running, add the olive oil in a steady stream until the pesto becomes creamy or to your likings. Add S/P to taste. Use over pasta or as a healthy condiment.

Testimonials

Growing up I was always very disorganized and my school supplies were always a huge mess. After seventh grade I wanted to get organized and stay that way. Dr Kane, asked if I needed help. I had said yes and the next Saturday she came over. She showed me how to get all my papers in to the right place. Two weeks later she came back and helped me more. After a few months it got to the point where I could stay mostly organized and if I ever did get disorganized, I could effectively reorganize again. To summarize she was a great help to me. -Zach Wolf, Student

I was duly impressed by Dr. Kane, the minute she introduced herself to our staff and shared her future goals for our school. Her sincere humanistic approach towards everyone always showed great sensitivity. She always supported the children in her school to resolve problems that may have arisen. Dr. Kane is a rare and precious individual, who I admire and support. If anyone could get someone back on their feet and get the job done, she’s the one. She makes an exceptional and dynamic Academic Achievement Coach. -Irene Toovey, Teacher

any people have experienced the hollow feeling that follows the irreconcilable break-up of a relationship. It is often accompanied by hopelessness or depression. If you are there, you might feel that little can console you. You must trust that these feelings will subside, that your strength will return, and that your life will be fulfilling and love filled again. There isn't a formula for getting through a break-up. The path is different for each person that travels it. Yet there are some important thoughts to keep in mind during the dark times. Recognize that your pain is real and do not feel embarrassed for hurting. Both men and women feel lost during break-ups. Often women are afforded the release of crying while many men must permit themselves that same comfort. Tears are healthy as they alleviate the pent-up stressor of sadness. Remind yourself that each passing day will bring you closer to smiling and laughing again. Act in your own self-interest and make decisions that enhance your health and wellbeing. Indulge yourself, but not to the point of excess - excess is not in your best interest. Avoid isolating and fill your calendar. Busy-ness will help take your mind off the past. Try something new like the old advice of changing your haircut/color, or learn an instrument, or a foreign language, or take a trip. Don't dwell in the world of 'What If' or 'If Only I’. Teach yourself to embrace the moment and invite the future. Exercise, yoga, strength training, and dance all help your endorphins kick in and make you feel better. A strong body and strong mind are interrelated. Also, surround yourself with the friends and family members that make you feel loved. We begin to equate our feelings of rejection with inadequacy. Fill your life with people that remind you of how wonderful and lovable you are. Try not to idealize the past. Make a list of the unfavorable issues of the relationship. It might mean accepting that you weren't as happy as you thought, or that you were in denial of the signs that the relationship would end. Maybe

you were committed to commitment and stayed for the wrong reasons. Write down the things - the ‘bad stuff’ and keep it in your pocket. When you have moments of weakness and you want to reach out and re-establish contact, read the list first. Keep your mind out of the past and don’t indulge in thoughts that are only more hurtful. Turn your mind toward happier thoughts. Know when you need professional help. No relationship About Ridvan Foxhall: is worth the loss of life or the loss of desire for life. Therapists, healers, and counselors can get you through the worst of times. Make that your new relationship for a while. Go talk to someone who is dedicated to enhancing your well-being. You might learn things about yourself that are contributing to the intensity of your sadness. Therapy can help you find perspective and renew your hope for the future. Consider medication even if you are hesitant. People tend to self-medicate during hard times with alcohol or drugs - These options work against you. Recognize the line between grieving and suffering. You don't have to suffer. Accept the idea that you are where you are supposed to be.
