CEO’S
letter
Welcome to our first edition of the Moments Magazine! Our mission is to encourage, support and celebrate our clients – assisting individuals to live ‘a better now’. Whatever this means for you, we are sure you will find something to celebrate in this edition.
As I write this letter, I’m feeling optimistic about what the rest of 2024 will look like for our communities. More connections and more empowerment. I hope you are feeling that same optimism, and I urge you to reach out to us here at Momentum Collective if we can support you.
I’m also feeling proud of what we have achieved so far even with so many obstacles, we always follow through on what we set out to do. Our cover story is a shining example of this. Our client Ye Zheng embarked on an exciting journey. He just went on his first Short Term Accommodation trip as a step for him to achieve his goal of independency and increase his social skills.
People are the centre of our organisation, and we love to
celebrate their journeys and their achievements. That’s why you will find plenty of stories about people in this, and all our magazines.
Take Doug – page 4, who is kicking goals hosting his own radio program. Or George –page 15 who has just being housed after a few years being homeless.
There is plenty inside the cover! The focus for Moments Magazine is information and enjoyment. We would love to hear your feedback and any suggestions for the magazine. You can email communications@ mymomentum.org.au and it will be gratefully received.
We are determined to keep supporting people to live ‘a better now’, and to inspire an inclusive, connected and empowered community.
I hope you enjoy reading this edition of your Moments Magazine.
I’m feeling optimistic about what the rest of 2024 will look like for our communities.”

MELODIES OF CONNECTION
Doug and Scott’s musical bond
Every Friday afternoon the Lismore airwaves light up with ‘The Hit List’, a radio show playing a range of ‘70s and ‘80s music handpicked by Doug, a Momentum Collective client.
Doug, who lives with an intellectual disability, has been receiving Assistance with Daily Life supports for over four years now. He is remarkably independent, living alone, driving, grocery shopping and preparing meals (with a love for slow cooking), along with pursuing a special passion for radio.
The love of music and the radio spans 30 years, fueled by hours of listening to vinyl records and watching Suzi Quatro at the Workers’ Club in Lismore. Even as a young boy growing up in a foster family of 13, he found rhythm in the simplest things, banging on garbage bins as makeshift drums. He loved playing vinyl’s and enjoyed tuning into the Top 40 show, featuring hits from the ‘70s and ’80s.
After volunteering in a local radio station’s library, Doug was inspired to have his own show and started learning everything about radio. He volunteered at other stations until his first show “Afternoon Delight” was created. After sharpening his skills, he now has a regular Friday afternoon time slot with River FM in Lismore, taking requests, conducting interviews, and creating playlists that his audience loves.
I love giving people good music to listen to while driving to work or other places. It’s also great knowing that my afternoon program is helping people unwind and get ready for the weekend.”

Doug presenting his radio show
Doug and his Momentum Collective Support Worker Scott first met in July last year at a River FM training course. Scott has always enjoyed music and radio was new to him, so assisting Doug has been an amazing adventure. Their shared passion for music has only strengthened their bond.
Every Friday, Scott picks Doug up and takes him to River FM, where Doug presents “The Hit List”. Here Scott can support Doug’s passion, allowing him to select songs, present, take requests and interview local artists. Scott assists by operating the console and loading songs during the radio show.
The positive feedback pouring in from the community indicates that listeners appreciate his music choice and contributions to the station. Engaging with locals, broadcasting his show and listening to their stories bring him pure joy.
With the support of his other Momentum Collective Support Worker Stacey, Doug has recently developed enough confidence to approach local Lismore businesses to ask for donations toward his radio show. Additionally, Doug hopes to have a live broadcast at the Lismore show in October this year –very exciting!
Doug’s journey in radio is a true testament to the power of our support in fostering independence, fulfilment and connection. Assistance with Daily Life supports provided by Momentum Collective has allowed Doug to confidently navigate daily tasks and pursue his deep love of radio.
Doug’s passion for connecting with the community through his radio show is truly amazing. We’re proud to support his passion”
With the ongoing support from Scott, and the strong bond they have built through music, Doug has created more than just a radio show – it’s a platform for community engagement, bringing joy to everyone who listens.
Doug’s journey from vinyl records and a local radio station library to hosting ‘The Hit List’ on River FM demonstrates the power of pursuing your passion and how the right support can assist individuals grow and thrive in remarkable ways.

EMPOWERING INDEPENDENCE a 27-year-old s adventure begins
Meet WoWo, also known as Ye Zheng, on a remarkable six-year journey of growth and independence with Momentum Collective. Ye, living with Autism, relocated to Australia from China at the age of 13 with his mother, seeking better disability support services. Banora Point, NSW, has been their home ever since.
Ye met Bradley, a dedicated Support Worker at Momentum Collective, two years ago. Initially assisting him with Community Access, Bradley quickly formed a strong bond with Ye. Watching WoWo’s remarkable progress, his parents trusted Bradley with increasingly extensive support, resulting in 10-hour shifts today compared to the initial three hours when the pair first met.
He has come a long way with his independence, and loves navigating the world with his Support Worker. At 27 years old, Ye’s first-ever respite trip with Momentum Collective marks a significant milestone in his journey
of stepping outside his comfort zone. Ye’s trip was carefully planned to align with his goals of enhancing independence, social skills and embracing new experiences.
Ye set off on his big adventure last February. Bradley drove WoWo to his hotel to unpack before jetting off on their first outing – Dreamworld, a dream destination for the keen theme park enthusiast.
Dressed in his beloved Lakers basketball shirt, Ye eagerly embraced the thrills of the rides, enjoying the vibrant and interactive park atmosphere. Bradley watched Ye’s joy and enthusiasm firsthand throughout the week as they explored SeaWorld, Movie World, and everything the holiday destination offers.
“Seeing Ye’s excitement and confidence blossom throughout the two years has been incredibly rewarding”, reflect Bradley
I feel lucky to have been by his side and to have seen him take the leap to go on his first-ever respite trip without his parents. He is experiencing the world all on his own!”
Like Brad, Ye’s parents and everyone at Momentum Collective are beyond proud to see WoWo accomplish his first respite, and we look forward to seeing what he achieves next.

overcoming adversity CLAIRE’S TRIUMPH
In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, Claire*, a devoted single mother, has overcome significant challenges to create a brighter future for herself and her four-year-old daughter, Lilly*.
When devastating floods struck Lismore in 2022, Claire’s rental home became completely unlivable, leaving her homeless and facing financial constraints. Despite the hurdles, Claire persisted, tirelessly searching for a new place and securing one in Main Arm, NSW. However, even with a new home, affording basic necessities and the cost of rent remained challenging.
Instead of giving up hope, Claire sought assistance from Momentum Collective’s Rent Assistance Program, where she was linked to our Specialist Homelessness Service Case Manager.
Providing rental assistance and comprehensive support to individuals like Claire is vital for ensuring stability and security for families dealing with housing challenges.”
We work closely with clients to address their immediate needs and want them to feel empowered to build a brighter future.”
Under our guidance and several catch ups, Claire received assistance, including educational support, rent relief and valuable budgeting advice.
With the support of the Rent Assistance Program, Claire balanced the demands of her new part-time job and the challenges of establishing her business. Her resourcefulness and Momentum Collective support enabled her to overcome initial obstacles, and pave a sustainable path forward for herself and Lilly.
Equipped with the knowledge and resources provided, Claire successfully launched her company, and begun saving for the first time. She can now provide Lilly with a secure and nurturing environment, ensuring her daughter’s wellbeing, and fostering opportunities for a promising future.
Claire’s success story is a source of inspiration for others facing similar challenges. It reminds us that anyone can overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams with solid support and determination.

THE POWER OF GIVING BACK TO OUR women s refuge
Meet Alexandra, one of our compassionate Case Workers. With first-hand experience, Alexandra witnesses the profound impact of contributions on our Women and Children’s Refuge. Here, every donation, regardless of size, plays a crucial role in providing necessary aid and resources to women and children fleeing violence.
Last year, Alexandra embarked on a mission to incorporate the cultural essence of Bundjalung Country into our Women and Children’s Refuge. “Even though our clients may not stay for long, it’s vital for them to experience a sense of calm and relaxation in their surroundings”, she explains.
Alexandra reached out to local Aboriginal artist Katrina Graves through her Instagram platform and found a willing partner in both Katrina and her sister,
Sinead Singh. The connection was instant as the sisters were inspired to support the Women and Children’s Refuge after escaping a dangerous situation with their mother. This led to the resilient siblings living in a women’s refuge on the Gold Coast.
Katrina’s determination to infuse joy and strength into our refuge through her artwork was evident. The piece is titled “Brand New Day” and symbolises ‘the gift of a fresh start and finding beauty in each day.’
In addition to the remarkable artwork donated earlier this year, our Women’s and Children’s Refuge in Tweed Heads receives consistent support from local businesses, artists and the community annually.
We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to our loyal donors and partners, including QCWA Coolangatta,

George s journey
Heather, a compassionate and dedicated Tenancy Officer at Momentum Collective, demonstrated great commitment to assisting George in securing a permanent residence, marking a pivotal moment in his life.
George’s path to stability was challenging. For a long time, he lived in a caravan park, dealing with the uncertainties of not having a permanent place to live. But when the floods hit in 2022, his living situation worsened. The floods destroyed his temporary home, making him feel even more uncertain.
During this challenging time, Heather stepped in, determined to turn George’s long-cherished dream of a stable home into a reality. With her expertise and compassionate approach, Heather worked tirelessly to navigate the complexities of

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR
NDIS PLAN?
The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) helps Australians with disability by providing funds for support and services. It aims to make sure people with disability can take part in community activities, build skills and be more independent.
To make the most of your NDIS funding, it’s important to understand your NDIS plan. Your plan shows what support and services you can get and how much money you have. Take time to read your plan carefully and understand what it includes. But figuring out the NDIS can be tricky.
If you’re running out of money or your circumstances have changed, contact the NDIS for help. They have resources to guide you through what to do next.
16
KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR PLAN
About halfway through your plan, you should have spent about half of your budget. This helps you avoid running out of money too soon. You can use a spreadsheet or a budgeting app to track your spending. Also, keep all your receipts and invoices, as you might need them later.
USE THE NDIS PRICE GUIDE
Think about what you want to achieve with your NDIS funding and set goals for yourself. Your plan covers a set period, so it’s important to think ahead. 7 4 2 5 6 3
This guide tells you the maximum amount you can be charged for different services. It helps you plan your spending and stay within your budget. You can find the Price Guide on the NDIS website.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT PROVIDERS
Find providers who have experience working with people with a disability and are registered with the NDIS. Think about your needs before choosing a provider, and ask lots of questions before deciding. Our friendly team is available to help you out.
GET SUPPORT COORDINATION
If you need help managing your plan or finding providers, support coordination can assist. It’s a service that helps you navigate the NDIS and plan for your future.
GET TRANSPORTATION ALLOWANCE
If you need help getting around, you can get funding for transportation assistance. This can cover taxis or other private transportation options. Let your Support Coordinator know if you already get a Mobility Allowance.
BE PROACTIVE
Regularly review your plan and make changes if your needs have changed. Look for new providers and services that might help you. Don’t be afraid to speak up for what you need. 1

NEW PROGRAMS OF SUPPORT
aim to support people with disability reach their goals
Momentum Collective announced the launch of its new NDIS Programs of Support in April. Co-designed with participants, the new program focuses on clients’ outcomes and offers various activities for individuals to reach their life goals.
During the development phase, insights from an NDIA report underscored a concerning statistic: approximately 60% of NDIS participants, representing over 332,950 individuals, lack input into selecting programs or services vital to realising their aspirations and leading fulfilling lives.
In response, Momentum Collective embarked on a seven-month journey dedicated to understanding the needs and preferences of clients, families and carers.
“Our clients were instrumental in shaping our new service. They expressed a desire for a program that embodies vibrancy, enjoyment and innovation. Their active participation led to the launch of our refreshed Programs of Support, named Bloom”, shared Tracey Mackie, CEO of Momentum Collective.
Celebrated through three launch events in Casino, Grafton and Tweed Heads, Bloom is designed to prioritise a client-centric and dynamic experience, reflecting a fresh and energetic ethos.
Our aim is to ensure that people with disability are heard and supported in building their capacity.
Join our BLOOM PROGRAM today for a flourishing future.
The difference with Bloom is that all activities are directly linked to the client’s outcomes, be it lifelong learning, social and community participation, or the cultivation of meaningful relationships. NDIS participants can choose from various activities, such as our ‘swimming group’, ‘art therapy’, ‘learning to drive’, ‘job-seeking group’, or even learning how to become a Barista.”
