1997 - 2017 W

hen we first established the Ship of the Year award back in 1997 our perspective was to highlight Norwegian maritime competence eg ship design, ownership and management, equipment and - especially Norwegian shipbuilding. We invited The Royal House of Norway and the Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry to support our initiative which they both did and as part of the official opening ceremony at Nor-Shipping 1997 the Ship of the Year concept were launched.

We are honored by the presence of HM The King at almost all Ship of the Year ceremonies in Oslo over the years and this year, for the second time, HRH The Crown Prince will stand on stage together with the award winners at Nor-Shipping 2017, Tuesday 30 May. The Jury. Already in 1996 we started discussions regarding the composition of the Jury.

It was our intention to create a committee consisting of industry executives and within short I had the pleasure of having Mr. Per Sævik, President, Norwegian Shipowner's Association, and Mr. Birger Skår, Managing Director, Norwegian Shipbuilders Sales and Marketing organization on board the Jury.

Two years later Mr. Rolf Sæther, Managing Director of the NSA succeed Mr. Sævik. The three of us formed a Jury with high competence within most aspects of the maritime industries. It is natural to mention Mr. Jon W. Thomas, then Managing Director of Norway Trade Fairs organizing the Nor-Shipping exhibitions, who supported our initiative to the fullest.

There are strict guidelines that the Jury must base its work on. Above all, requirements for innovation and value creation are guidelines pointing the Jury towards each year's winner.

The Jury shall promote new ways of thinking and problem solving, thus reward Innovators

and assist them publishing their inventions.

1997. As winner of the 1997 award the Jury elected M/V “Bow Faith”, Hull No. 134 from Kværner Florø AS to owners Storli/Odfjell ASA. The handing over of the awards was performed by Ms. Grete Knudsen, Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry.

Since then 19 Norwegian built vessels have received this even international high ranking award. It is to mention that no ship delivered during 2005 and 2011 qualified as Ship of the Year. Over the years, the Jury has recognized several groundbreaking inventions such as the world's first LNG fueled ferry “Glutra” in the year 2000, the world's first PSV “Viking Avant” with bridge and machinery aft in 2004, the world's first vessel with an X-Bow AHTS “Bourbon Orca” in 2006, the offshore service vessel “Island Wellserver” being an Installation on the Norwegian continental shelf in 2008, the world's first all-electric ZeroCat 120 battery car ferry “Ampere” in 2014 and, in 2016, the state-of-the-art hybrid-electric carbon fibre catamaran “Vision of The Fjords”.

2016 – a new Jury. After the 2015 appointment Mr. Sæther and Mr. Skår retired from the Jury. New jury members are Mr. Sturla Henriksen, CEO Norwegian Shipowners' Association, and Mr. Lars Gørvell-Dahll, Director Maritime Branch, Federation of Norwegian Industries.

This new Jury made a choice for 2016 that received acknowledgments from around the world. With the brandname Seasight from the building yard Brødrene Aa AS we elected a premium sightseeing vessel designed from the ground up to enhance the passengers' sightseeing experience and reduce the vessel's environmental footprint. The exterior is inspired by a twisting mountain road and

gives the passengers freedom to walk around the ship while enjoying the scenery along the spectacular fjords between the UNESCO World Heritage Listed fjords on the Western Coast of Norway. M/V “Vision of The Fjords” is through the whole Nor-Shipping 2017 week moored at Aker Brygge in Oslo.

Nominated for 2017. Two ships fought for the 2017 award: M/V “NKT Victoria”, a SALT 306 design with Yard No. 372 from Kleven Verft to NKT, and M/V “Windea Leibniz”, a ULSTEIN SX175 design with Yard No. 310 from Ulstein Verft to BS Offshore.

The first is a 140 m cable-laying vessel built for installation of high-voltage cable systems.

The other is a 88 m offshore wind/SOV vessel designed for service and maintenance of offshore wind installations.

Both would be worthy winners of the Ship of the Year Award for 2017, but the Jury found “NKT Victoria” to be the better choice. The Jury has recognized the vessel's state-of-theart capacities and innovations as a world leading cable laying vessel. – She represents the best competence within Norwegian ship design and shipbuilding, according to the Jury.

With this dedicated Ship of the Year magazine we aim to give you a glimpse of the qualities of this hi-tech winner ship for 2017. We wish you good reading!

Shaping Norway's Maritime Future

Norway is currently one of the world's leading ocean economies. Every day hundreds of thousands of Norwegians go to work in the ocean industries, which together represent about 70 per cent of our export income.

As one of the major ocean industries, the Norwegian maritime industry has a strong international presence, sporting one of the largest and most comprehensive maritime clusters in the world. The value added of the maritime industry was in 2014 NOK 183 billion, counting 110 000 employees, and Norwegian maritime businesses are leaders in high-tech segments in shipping, shipbuilding, maritime equipment and maritime services.

In recent decades, however, increased globalisation has seen freer movement of goods and capital, bringing about both an increase in international trade, but also a fiercer competition for market shares and contracts.

Subsequently, changes in the global economy now strongly impact on the Norwegian maritime industry.

For Norway to remain a leading maritime nation, maritime R&D is essential. The Government's commitment to the maritime industry was presented in 2015 in the maritime strategy, "Maritime Opportunities – Blue Growth for a Green Future". Two of the major overarching topics in the strategy is research and innovation, and green shipping.

These are interlacing areas where the Norwegian maritime industry has competitive advantages.

In continuation of the maritime strategy, the Norwegian Government was in 2016 presented with a comprehensive proposal for maritime R&D policies for the 21st century.

The ocean can contribute to solving future global needs, but this entails sustainable use.

The main objective of the government's strategy is to contribute to the greatest possible sustainable value creation and employment in the ocean industries. This will both secure healthy and productive oceans, but also safeguard the future of our ocean economy.

The maritime industry has played a vital role in making Norway one of the world's leading ocean economies of today. The Norwegian maritime industry is a world leader in the development and utilisation of new technology.

The examples of green maritime technologies having additional and useful applications in adjacent ocean industries, such as offshore oil and gas, fisheries and aquaculture, are numerous and growing. To ensure that Norway remains a leading ocean economy, we must facilitate further growth of established ocean industries, the development of new industries, and not least, make sure that sector specific knowledge is shared and utilized across industries.

The next big leap is the development of enabling technologies constituting advances in Big Data, the Internet of Things, virtual prototyping and the development of automation and unmanned solutions. The Maritime21 strategy will remain an important point of

The Norwegian maritime industry has never been afraid to venture beyond known horizons, and this has for centuries been its primary strength. For generations we have adapted to new markets and learned to utilise new technology, setting new milestones in international shipping. There is much we don’t know about the future. But knowledge is and will be key to future competitiveness, and therefore by providing the industry with trustworthy and proactive R&D policies, we will facilitate new opportunities and accomplishments.

State of the art high-voltage cable laying vessel elected

SHIP OF THE YEAR 2017

Described as next generation cable-laying vessel this Salt Ship Design vessel was nominated Ship of the Year 2017 by the readers of the Nordic maritime trade journal SKIPSREVYEN and eventually elected winner by the jury consisting of industry executives.

M/V “NKT Victoria” is build number 372 from the Norwegian shipyard Kleven Verft AS and was contracted as M/V “ABB Victoria” by ABB in September 2015. She was delivered to her owners NKT HVC AS on 10 April 2017 with Remøy Management AS as Manager.The hull is built at Christ Shipyard Sp.z.o.o., Poland. The delivery of this vessel to NKT is part of the acquisition of ABB HV Cables of 21 September 2016. Following the acquisition she has undergone a paint job, switching from ABB's red to NKT's blue.

The jury's reasoning for electing “NKT Victoria” as Ship of the Year 2017 is based on the fact that she is among the world's most advanced cable laying vessels incorporating several novelties as DP3 system and unique onboard DC Grid. The vessel is capable of simultaneous dual HVDC installation with high capacity tensioner system. The vessel is also fitted with a 6-point mooring system to maneuver where most deep sea cable layer would give up.

She provides improved cabel-laying precision based on e.g. DP3 capability and a remotely operated vehicle using cameras and sonar eliminating the need for divers. If not incorporated in the power cable itself,

fiber optic cables for monitoring purposes can be placed simultaneously.

These, and many more cutting-edge features, contribute to higher efficiency and precision of the installation and service execution, while offering maximum safety for the crew. In addition, “NKT Victoria” uses a power-from-shore solution together with onboard energy storage systems. This reduces fuel and CO2 consumption significantly compared with other cable-laying vessels available in the market. The power-from-shore connection can be maintained while loading the cable onto the vessel – a unique advantage which results in a more environmental-friendly operation.

Completes the NKT turnkey solutions offering With this vessel, NKT completes its high-voltage AC/DC power cable system offering to include planning, design, manufacturing, installation and related cable-laying services.

Shaped by experience Installation of high-voltage cable systems requires experience, extensive knowledge and state-of-the-art equipment. M/V “NKT Victoria” is specifically developed to perform installations of high-voltage cables, hence the equipment and technology incorporated is optimized to conduct advanced and safe instal-

lation operations with exceptional efficiency and precision. The design is based on extensive experience of high-voltage cable manufacturing and installation and will enable laying of cables without compromising their integrity.

By employing state-of-the-art Azipod propulsion units in combination with an energy storage system for

marine applications, a 27 percent fuel consumption reduction is enabled. First class dynamic positioning technology (DP3) will allow the vessel to maintain its position with high presision during cable installation procedure even at contingent conditions which is vital in particular around winter or oil platforms.

the personnel onboard the vessel is attained and maintained throughout the installation process by employing sophisticated technologies for role reduction, mitigating the effects of harsh sea conditions, and by utilizing systems for containment of fire and flooding in case of emergency.

Utilizing the long and through experience and expertise within the field of submarine operations, “NKT Victoria� is custom-built according to specifications ensuring that the features applied corresponds with any requirements of advanced installation procedures.

Design highlights Turntables. 1 x 7 000 ton capacity basket carousel on main deck and 1 x 4 500 ton capacity basket carousel below deck. A total of 9 000 t combined cable capacity. 2 x wide stern chutes, 2 x 45 t four track lay tensioners and 3 x 45 t tensioner deck seats.

Crane capabilities. The vessel is equipped with 2 x AHC Offshore cranes, 15t@32m arm + 25t@15m arm and 2 x deckcranes 10t@15m arm and 4t@26m. Accommoda-

tion 100 pax MLC 2006/SPS, 2008 compliance. Helideck supporting Sikorsky S92.

Aft deck. Fully weldable with cofferdam above MDO tanks to avoid gas freeing. Lay-out is flexible and versatile for various mobilisations.

Cargo hold below deck. Large differences in loading conditions empty vessel (arrival) versus fully loaded (departure) places great demands on stability. Roll reduction is optimized by 4 x passive roll reduction tanks and bilge keels. This to increase operability in cable lay modus (accelerations on aft deck, accelerations on carousel), ROV launch and operability, crane operations and helicopter operability.

Freeboard. It has been important for the designers to minimize green sea on deck, min. 3.0 m freeboard aft (3.8 m at normal max operation).

From carousel and forward, 3 m deckhouse as a protected passageway on main deck. 1.8 m bulwark surrounding carousel on deck.

Kleven Verft. The building yard Kleven Verft in Ulsteinvik, Norway is part of the family-owned group Kleven comprising the two yards Myklebust Verft and Kleven Verft.

The company has in recent years invested heavily in automation and robotisation of parts of the hull production, allowing the yard to backsource a larger part of the building process to Norway. The group's Order list comprices 16 ships in order at a total value of NOK 9 billion.

“NKT Victoria” named in Karlskrona, Sweden May 4th 2017: The new NKT cable-laying vessel was named “NKT Victoria” at a ceremony at the power cable plant in Karlskrona, Sweden. The act was carried out by the regional Governor of Blekinge and marks the starting point of a new era of NKT turnkey high-voltage offshore cable system capabilities.

The cable-laying vessel event was attended by a large number of customers, partners, investors and employees. After the naming ceremony conducted by Berit Andnor Bylund, Governor of Blekinge, the vessel headed out for its first cable-laying project north of Scotland.

Michael Hedegaard Lyng, President and CEO of NKT, said: “With this cable-laying vessel we are now among the very few AC/DC high-voltage offshore cable system providers to deliver complete turnkey solutions. We are well-positioned to continue taking an active part in the growing global market for offshore wind projects and further build on our reputation as a trusted partner in this industry.”

An outstanding shipyard Builder of Ship of the Year 2017 Kleven Verft AS is amongst the most recognized ship yards in Norway. The orderbook can only be described as impressive.

After the delivery of Yard No. 372, “NKT Victoria”, the group's orderlist consists of 16 outstanding ships at a total value of NOK 9 billion with an Expedition vessel for Hurtigruten to be delivered in 2019 as the last one.

It was back in September 2015 that Kleven and ABB signed the contract for the building of Yard No. 372, the 140 m long cable laying vessel now elected Ship of the Year 2017. Commenting on the contract back in 2015 Kleven CEO Ståle Rasmussen said the contract is a large and very important order for Kleven, in a time where shipbuilding contracts in general are few. – Adding to our orderbook yet another contract for markets outside the traditional offshore segment is also of great importance, Mr. Rasmussen said.

- Kleven has been a strong brand name within the shipping industry for many decades, both for newbuildings and for service, Ellen Kvalsund, Communication Manager, says. – The companies in the Kleven Group have a history that stretches back in time almost one hundred years. Our entire history has been

characterized by a willingness to work hard and a wish to steadily improve working methods and results. We are investing in new know-how, new facilities and new technology in order to ensure that our proud shipbuilding traditions will continue.

A diversified yard

The Kleven Group with the Kleven Verft and Myklebust Verft has an impressive track record with building vessels of all kinds, fishing vessels, offshore ships, passenger- and exploration ships, mega yachts, live fish carriers etc.

Our team of 77 Naval Architects and Marine Engineers combine experience and knowledge with enthusiasm, creativity and dedication to develop and deliver the design and documentation needed to build a vessel, Mr. Vestbøstad continues. According to Mr. Arne Drønen, Project Management, SALT in their process of designing Offshore and Special vessels has combined innovative thinking and well proven solutions.

A product of excellent cooperation The main purpose of a cable lay ship is to take on board, bring to location and to install power cables in a safe and efficient manner. M/V “NKT Victoria” has implemented optimization for all those phases already starting when taking onboard cable at the shore base in

Karlskrona with 7000t of cable in the main carousel on deck or 4500t in each of the two main carousels, in addition to 500t of fiber optic cable. The latter a typical max loading condition for a DC job (DC cable versus AC cable). Furthermore, the logistics of the cable handling has been optimized and the ship has been designed around the principle of careful and effective handling of the valuable cable during loading on board, and vice versa when offloading the same at the final location.

Staying at the shore base, “NKT Victoria” is connected with a 11kV electric cable, and all the gensets can be turned off during this activity. This has great advantages, especially locally, with respect to low noise, impact on environment and cost.

When the vessel leaves shore to head for the cable lay location, she sails in an efficient manner with an optimized hull pushed through the water by three efficient ABB pods. The pods are driven by gensets and the electric plant is

a DC grid system enabling the gensets to also adjust rpm to run at the most efficient loading. Furthermore, a battery package enables peak shaving and furthermore gives the gensets good working conditions to lower fuel consumption and lower carbon footprint.

For a Cable lay ship where the difference between fully loaded and ballast condition is significant both with regard to loading and with respect to center of gravity, it is important to design good roll reducing measures to ensure safety and comfort for the crew onboard. For this reason, “NKT Victoria” is fitted with four roll reduction tanks.

“NKT Victoria” is also beachable, meaning she is designed with the ability to be grounded controlled at even bottom for shallow water locations when the cable is brought to shore for end termination.

At shallow water in general she also has six-point mooring enabling station keeping.

From red to blue In September 2015, ABB and Kleven announced a contract on the building of a 140 m long cable laying vessel of SALT 306 CLV design.

To Kleven, the contract was among the largest to date for the family-owned shipbuilding company on the north-west coast of Norway. “This project is a great example of the strength of Norwegian ship design and ship building in tough international competition. Close cooperation between ABB, Salt Ship Design and Kleven has resulted in a vessel that is future-oriented, competitive and highly innovative,” Ståle Rasmussen, Kleven’s CEO, said when announcing the contract. “This is a large and very important contract for Kleven, in a time where shipbuilding contracts in general are few. Adding to our orderbook yet another contract for markets outside the traditional offshore segment is also of great importance,” Mr. Rasmussen said.

business. With a focus on modernisation, the shipyards invest in new technology and expertise to ensure that they remain a key player in the shipbuilding market.

The company has invested in automation and robotisation for hull construction, which has allowed them to backsource a larger part of the construction process to Norway.

As traditional domestic, offshore related markets sank with the oil price, Kleven has applied its experience to new markets, with the “NKT Victoria” as a great example of their success in doing so.

- Building “NKT Victoria”, one of the world’s most advanced and fuel efficient cable-laying vessels, has been a challenging first, but we are used to handling ‘firsts’ at Kleven. That is how you survive in this business – by having skilled and experienced employees who take on every challenge you give them, Mr. Rasmussen says.

Another special feature with this contract has been that NKT is not only the shipowner, but also the end user of the vessel. Mr. Rasmussen believes this is something we’ll see more of, also in other segments. And it has consequences for the shipbuilding process, according to the Kleven CEO: ‘With the customer also being the end user, the attention to detail during the building process is even higher. That can be challenging, but the end result is excellent, and our organization benefits from it.”

A year after the contract was made public, in September 2016, NKT Cables announced they were acquiring ABB’s high-voltage cable system business, including the vessel under construction.

When the sale was completed in March 2017, the vessel turned from ABB red to NKT blue practically overnight at Kleven Verft.

he subsea service/construction vessel M/V “Skandi Africa” was declared Ship of the Year at Nor-Shipping 2015. She was delivered from Vard Søviknes as yard No. 800 on 23rd March 2015 to DOF Subsea Rederi AS.

M/V “Skandi Africa” is specially designed and equipped for subsea operation duties. She is considered to be amongst the most complex offshore vessels ever delivered from a Norwegian shipyard. Vard Søviknes was responsible for turn-key delivery incl. topside equipment.

SHIP OF THE YEAR Since Skipsrevyen invented the Ship of the Year award in 1997, it has become a great success. Maritime medias from all over the world pay attention every year when the winner is proclaimed, which happens either at the SMM, Hamburg, Germany, or at the Nor Shipping, Oslo, Norway - two great events that gathers people from the maritime industry world wide. On a regular basis the handover of the awards is usually performed by a Minister or State secretary from the Norwegian government. When performed in Norway, the winners also receives congratulations from HM The King or HRH The Crown Prince.

he all-electric car ferry “Ampere” were elected Ship of the Year 2014.

Built by Fjellstrand AS for Owners Norled AS M/V “Ampere” is a unique and innovative vessel.

2014 M/V “Ampere” is of Fjellstrand's ZeroCat 120 design.

For each crossing between Lavik and Oppedal on the west coast of Norway, she only needs 150-200 kWh. Each crossing takes about 15 minutes.

Compared to a standard diesel ferry this electric vessel will save approx. one million litres of fuel annually as well as preventing 570 tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.

It was Norwegian State Secretary Ms. Dilek Ayhan who performed the Ship of the Year ceremony at SMM 2014 in Hamburg.

She is a chemical tanker compliant supply vessel which also was the main reason for why the Jury elected her Ship of the Year 2012.

2010

/V “Skandi Aker” was delivered from STX Norway Offshore AS – Søviknes to the Owners, DOFCON AS, on 7 January 2010 as the yard’s hull No. 705.

Described as a conventional rigid riser light well intervention unit, she is classified as both ship and drilling unit, “Skandi Aker” can single-handedly replace oil rigs for several operations which previously were exclusively assigned to rigs.

In sum all her technical achivements made her the obvious winner of Skipsrevyen’s SHIP OF THE YEAR 2010 award.

The design is of UT 754 WP type and “Far Solitaire” is the first PSV of this type ever built (solitaire – one of a kind).

The Multifunctional Plough, Tug, Supply, Subsea Service Vessel was described as the most powerful offshore vessel which had been built to date. She is purpose built for seabed pipeline trenching, pulling a remote controlled plough on the seabed laying pipeline into an up to 2.5m deep ditch.

The plough of about 200 tons can be pulled in water depths down to about 1,000m. A separate plough is used to backfill the trench.

She also introduces new standards for working environment, safety and comfort, according to jury member Mr. Rolf Sæther.

/V “Bourbon Orca”, the first Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessel of ULSTEIN AX104 design with ULSTEIN X-BOW and built by Ulstein Verft AS, was elected Skipsrevyens Ship of the Year 2006. The ceremony took place at the SMM 2006 Exhibition in Hamburg in September.

M/V «BOURBON ORCA» is the final product of a collaboration between Bourbon Offshore, Ulstein Design and ODIM and has several special features, like the X-Bow, the Odim SAHS and the diesel electric propulsion system.

The inverted bow is a striking feature. The bow stemline is pulled back, and the hull reaches the bridge deck.When the X-Bow ship enters a wave, the foreship’s submerged volume immediatel increases, and the retardation forces are distributed over an extended period of time. This results in lower acceleration/retardation levels.

The advantages for the crew with better workingvand safety conditions and greater comforts in terms of noise, vibration and stability is striking.

NORMAND SEVEN is a large state of the art vessel, capable to undertake all aspects of offshore construction and installation works.

The vessel is designed by Vik-Sandvik in close cooperation with the Owners and is of VS 4220 OCV design.

This is the second time a vessel built

by Ulstein Verft wins the prize. Last year’s winner, BOURBON ORCA, was also built by Ulstein.NORMAND SEVEN is however a bigger ship, in fact the largest ever built by Ulstein and she is an example of a complex project that has contributed to raise the level of the yard’s shipbuilding expertise.

he new pride of the Norwegian Navy KV «Svalbard» – a 103 meters 6300 tonnes icegoing Coast Guar Vessel built by Langsten AS – was delivered from the yard on the 18th of January 2002. Described as the world’s most sophisticated Coast Guard Vessel KV «Svalbard» received SKIPSREVYEN’s SHIP OF THE YEAR award at SMM 2002. Mr Oluf Ulseth, Undersecretary of State of the Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry handed over the awards to the ship’s captain, owner and buildingyard.

he “G.O. SARS” was awarded SKIPSREVYEN’s “SHIP OF THE YEAR” for 2003. Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Ansgar Gabrielsen, announced the prize as he opened the Nor-Shipping 2003 Exhibition on 3rd June. The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and the University of Bergen (UiB) joined forces when ordering the new fishery research vessel “G.O. SARS”, which is possibly the most advanced research vessel in the world. The vessel was christened by Her Majesty Queen Sonja on the 7th of May 2003 in Bergen, but was handed over from Flekkefjord Slipp & Maskinfabrikk AS to the Owners

n 2000 the world’s first LNG fuelled ferry – M/F «Glutra» – was elected SHIP OF THE YEAR, built by Langsten AS for Norwegian owner Møre og Romsdal Fylkesbåtar AS. The vessel is a technological innovation in a relatively conventional shape.

n 1998 the handing over of SKIPSREVYEN’s «SHIP OF THE YEAR» awards took place at the international shipping exhibition SMM in Hamburg. A considerable Norwegian representation at the exhibition made the venue a logical choice for the presentation.

«Glutra» is one of the world’s most environmental friendly vessels when it comes to emissions to air and sea.

E.g. the NOx emission is redused by 90 per cent.

Winner of the award was the luxurious M/S «Pasiphae», hull no. 67 from Fosen Mek. Verksteder owned by Minoan Lines S.A. in Greece.

The ship represented a new generation of integrated seismic vessels. Once again the event took place as part of the official opening ceremony at Nor-Shipping in Oslo. The handing over of the prices was performed by Mr. Lars Sponheim, then Norway’s Minister of Trade and Industry. As the case had been in 1997, also in 1999 H.M. King Harald (centre) took the time to greet the representatives of the Ship, the Owners and the Building yard.

Siemens BlueDrive PlusC.

Unique and environmental friendly - Siemens BlueDrive PlusC Head of Sales - Siemens AS, MSc EE Ketil Aagesen High expectations and requirements for minimum usage of fossile fuels and emissions are been set out when operation of vessels is to take place in a park where electrical energy is being produced from renewable sources. Windea Leibniz, as its sister ship Windea La Cour is equipped with the advanced diesel electrical propulsion system Siemens BlueDrive PlusC. This system is developed and produced by Siemens in Norway with focus on significant reduced fuel consumption and emissions, high efficiency, safe operation in DP, minimized vibrations and mechanical noise as well as reduced weight and volume. To achieve the unique functionalities the traditional three-phase main switchboard eliminated. Siemens has developed a system where infeed and consume is on 690V three phase level, but all internal main power distribution inside main switchboard is DC on 1 kV level. The main switchboard is no longer a traditional switchboard but a drives system where rectifiers makes DC from inlet AC and distributes this internally.

The drive produces variable frequency or fixed frequency to the different main consumers according to actual need.

Optimizing – Variable generator speed system Windea Leibniz is equipped with 4 pcs 1750 kW generator sets that produces all electrical power on-board. As a 34

significant difference to a traditional diesel electrical propulsion system the BlueDrive Plus C enables individual and independent optimizing of the generator sets. This optimizing takes place through individual load and speed / rpm control independent of synchronism.

The result is that fuel consumption in low load is reduced by up to 30% compared to traditional electrical propulsion systems. Low load for a wind service vessel is related to operation at DP close to the windmills. As majority of operation is close to the windmills the overall potential for reduction is significant. Since this lead to a low average speed setting for the diesel engines, reduced vibrations and low acoustic noise is a very pleasant side effect that benefits the crew on-board.

The generators from Siemens is specially designed for variable speed operation. This related to electrical design, control systems and supervision. The voltage from the generators is rectified by ultra-compact water-cooled rectifiers mounted inside the BlueDrive PlusC switchboard. Design of rectifiers are chosen with focus on low losses, simplicity, reliability and without usage of controlled semiconductors.

was new to the market. The system required rewriting of regulations and systems for class approval. However, the track record during operation of “Edda Ferd” since 2013 and more that 30 vessels since then has proven that the system gives the radical improvements as designed for. The systems have as well shown an impressive system reliability.

The internal distribution of electrical energy is based on DC Voltage. DC require significantly different systems to be able to deal with high currents. To maintain safe operation of the vessel during all operations a special design, products and systematic for selectivity is implemented. Siemens has performed full-scale type and systems-test to prove this functionality for DC distribution.

As a significant piece in this functionality Siemens has developed a special electronic DC breaker that can stop and segregate a short-circuit current in less that 17 microseconds. This system separates the fault prior to voltage collapse.

As a result, the vessel can always be operated in closed bus-tie operation without any worry about “ride-through “problems during and potential short-circuit event. This matter is significant for reduction of consumption and operational hours for diesel engines.

All thrusters are being controlled by variable speed / frequency inverters to eliminate thrusters zero-pitch losses.

Forward thruster is in addition dual fed through safe connection to both sides of bus tie. It has independent supply of control voltage and cooling and accepted as available for DP operation in all con-

TECHNOLOGY ditions. This is a standard feature in the BlueDrive PlusC system.

Electrical power for 440V is produced by inverter systems with special control systems and filter circuits. This secures functionality and operation as if they would be a rotating machine by functionality such as synchronizing, load sharing, selectivity and low electrical noise level (THD). In the BlueDrive PlusC there is an integrated advanced and redundant Energy Management System based on Siemens Simatic S7 controllers. In addition to basic power management functions like supervision and start/stop logics the EMS enhances extended control systems for energy optimizing.

The systems predict at all time, and prior to any load increase/decrease the necessary engine rpm adjustment needed. This enables the system itself to prepare for load variations without usage of unnecessary fuel. RCS performs as well automatic fast acting load control of thrusters independent if set point is generated from manual control or DP. By utilizing this regulation systematics Siemens RCS can ensure optimized response times and fuel consumption in all dynamic conditions without disturbing black smoke from the engines.
