Farm Life - debating skills

by Roger Hill

How lucky was the Devon County Show with three dry days, considering only a week earlier many of the vehicles had to be towed out of the Sheep Association event in East Devon.

Something that sparked media interest at the show, including BBC Spotlight, was the Devon Young Farmers Club agricultural debate - ‘to farm or not to farm’ was the title. It asked the question; ‘is there enough opportunity for the next generation in agriculture’? There was an interesting discussion about the challenges in the industry and how these can be overcome.

It coincided with government announcements about various policies including the Sustainable Farming Incentive. This is intended to support farmers in combining a sustainable farm business with a healthy natural environment. Unfortunately very little detail has emerged even after two years of consideration, and as farmers we need to plan ahead for the long term.

In the meantime, harvest is in full swing at home as the photo (opposite) of my tractor shows with quality not quantity being the order of the day. Returning to shows, I hope to see you all at our local Mid Devon Show on July 22nd set in the grounds of the glorious Knightshayes estate.

Fred’s 100km walk for farmers

The Farming Community Network (FCN) is a voluntary organisation that supports farmers and families in the farming community through difficult times. “Their job is very important. By doing my 100km walk I’m not only hoping to raise much-needed funds, but also awareness of the amazing work they do,” said Fred.

12 year old Fred Tucker put his best foot forward and has walked 100km on Exmoor to raise funds for the Farming Community Network. He set out to raise £300 for the charity, but smashed that target reaching almost £700 so far!
