Module Brief Title: Product, Range & Distribution
STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal Project Rationale Project Rationale. (what do you intend to do and why?)
I intend to write and illustrate a children’s picture/ storybook. Taking inspiration from other illustrators such as Laura Carlin and Jon Klassen I intend to produce something with narrative and sophistication that does not read as condescending. I wanted to do this because children’s illustration is something I’m interested in but am not yet 100% sure it is right for me in my practice. I feel like now is a good point to try something in depth, and to really explore it. I think making illustration for children is quite the challenge, working to make something both suitable and engaging. When making anything there’s this feeling that it has to be beneficial to a more ‘thoughtful’ ‘adult’ audience, I think it’s important to not become too selfabsorbed in pursuit of that but it’s also something I care about myself.
THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include Theoretical and non- creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary practice GENERAL THEMES: (I’m finding it hard to explain through words my intentions. At present there is less of a specific theme as a tone of voice I wanted to capture through narrative, character, story and atmosphere) I’m quite interested in the idea of ‘fears’, mostly because it brings me back to when I was a child (and very afraid of everything) and has some potential for different areas. Other potential general themes: the everyday, imagination, growth, connections SPECIFIC SUBJECTS: Fears: The dark, the unknown, monsters Using more specific things as placeholder/ metaphor for fear: the sea, insects. Maybe something very odd and specific to illustrate a certain idea. Connections and growth: viewing the world in a holistic way, how we are part of a larger scheme of things. Can be a little bit factual, but it’s more of a narrative, a story.
PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production / distribution of work in response to selected briefs.
