As we prepare for and anticipate the 2017 Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, we look into the future as we celebrate our flourishing present.

The pinnacle of many composers’ output is chamber music literature, and the masterpieces of chamber music are amongst the highest achievements of art created by humanity. Art itself, and music in particular, is the expression of humankind’s yearning toward a universal language of meaning.

Dear Friends,

When we, as artists, study and perform chamber music for our audiences, we create a circle of sharing and exploration. A chamber group is composed of separate individuals, with different cultural backgrounds and personal histories, who come together to share their gifts in the communal effort of performing a piece of music. The combination of differing views and talents of the participants in a chamber group is able, through their cooperation, to achieve a greater performance of art than any one vision could singly imagine.

This year, we celebrate our differences and our coming together as we create a wonderful season of chamber music. Our programs include a varied and vivid spectrum of familiar, unknown and newer works.

We have a remarkable roster of Young Artists, selected from the largest applicant pool in the history of Kneisel Hall. We welcome new faculty members: violinist Axel Strauss, and pianists Matti Raekallio and Ieva Jokubaviciute. We have guest artists Donald Palma (double bass) and Robert McDonald (piano) joining us for our first and last weekends of faculty concerts.

Our Continuum Concert will again combine the forces of accomplished KH alumni artists and current faculty. It will include two beloved string sextets: the Brahms Opus 36 in G major and Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht, as well as a new work for two cellists by composer Richard Wernick.

Composers Now enters its second season by welcoming to campus the world-renowned composer Mario Davidovsky. The Young Artists and faculty will explore and perform some of his works. He will hold an open rehearsal / talk on his music on Wednesday, July 12th.
