PRETTY THINGS

This issue’s ‘I just wanna make pretty things’ brush script project on page 16 sums up our mood this month – we want to add spring sunshine to everything we make, starting with the felt flowers on the cover. Get creative and style them into a wreath or garland – you can find out how on page 18. If you fancy trying something totally different, have a go at our teeny tiny clay cacti project on page 91 (they’re really not helping my succulent obsession). For some creative inspiration, settle down to our interview with Tatty Devine founders Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden on page 26. I was swept up by their enthusiasm and passion for what they do, and I know you will be too. Enjoy the issue, and share what you’re making online using #molliemakers.

Tearing up the rulebook with…

TATTY DEVINE From upcycling junk to running one of the UK’s best-loved indie brands, Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden have come a long way Words: ANNE WOLLENBERG Photographs: RACHAEL SMITH

From lobsters and foxes to gin bottles and guitar plectrums, Tatty Devine is renowned for creating quirky-cool, playful laser-cut jewellery. Co-founders Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden met at art school – both studied painting, although their styles were very different – and initially created jewellery from junk other people threw away. Tatty Devine took off from there. They bought a laser-cutter, Evil Edna (Harriet’s a Willo the Wisp fan), which is still going strong today in the basement of their East London studio. Two shops, 26 MOLLIEMAKES.COM 65

a list of enviable collaborations – such as Belle & Sebastian, and Gilbert & George gin – and two MBEs later, Rosie and Harriet are still head over heels in love with what they do. They never imagined what Tatty Devine would grow into back when Rosie was waiting in a Brick Lane bagel shop for Harriet to call her on the payphone. Times and technology may have changed, but Tatty Devine has the same inimitable spirit. We joined them for a cup of tea – served in Moomin mugs – and a chat about all things Tatty.

Describe the essence of Tatty Devine HV It’s a really fun recipe made from lots of weird ingredients. Everything we see and do and everywhere we’ve been. It’s usually bought by the person who’s going to wear it, which is a twist on the idea of jewellery. RW There’s definitely an element of wearing your heart on your sleeve. We make things that let you express what you love and who you are. We make a finite number of each piece because we want to move on and make something else – I always want the thing that doesn’t exist yet. Is there any such thing as a typical working day for you? HV I try to only answer emails in the morning or I can’t concentrate. I spend as much time as possible drawing and researching, interspersed with meetings. RW No two days are the same, although I have a very structured week. For example, Tuesday always has the same back-to-back meetings. But I could get a phone call in the morning that changes the whole day. How did you manage to learn and hone your craft? HV We asked some illustrator friends to draw us pictures of fuzzy felt shapes in Adobe Illustrator, so we were collaborative from the start. We started out using found treasure such as cake decorations and

plectrums – people threw more things away back then and we were like magpies. We realised you could take an object and turn it into something else just by having an idea about it. We still do that today. RW Tatty Devine was born very much in parallel with the birth of digital, and our jewellery is rooted in an analogue DIY aesthetic. We started selling at Portobello Market and spent all the money we made buying old junk. We went on a research trip to New York in 2001 and discovered a shop that sold Perspex and acrylic cut-

out shapes. We brought some back, then found a model-maker who could cut out shapes for us. He suggested we get our own machine as we were spending £1,000 a week. We got a loan, bought a laser cutter and Harriet pulled her sleeves up. HV It was great once we finally managed to plug it in correctly.

Tamar Schechner’s home is inspired by travel and her family’s creative talents Words: CAROLINE ROWLAND Photography: CAROLYN BATES

Tamar and her husband Ronen never intended to live in their current house for so long. Their 1960s split ranch home, which they affectionately call the ‘blue box’, started out as a rental home when they first relocated to Vermont from Tel Aviv. When it went on the market just months later, they decided to buy it, and it’s been their home for ten years. They’ve grown hugely fond of the space, dramatically transforming it in the time they’ve been there.
