Thank you to Mr Vice Captain Russ Trinick for being the match referee

The 2023 Ladies’ Golf Season, has got off to a good start.

AROUND THE GREENS

Well thank goodness that winter is over and we can now get some good spring recovery weather The course has endured some awful wet weather, taking a lot of traffic which smears the surface with muddy worm casts This will all take time to grow out so we need to be patient.

It was nice to see a few golfers using winter wheels that reduce contact with the soil, making trollies easy to move and they also protect the fairways, eliminating the damage made by standard trolley wheels

The greens responded well to early spring treatments. Steady growth will also help fill in the winter scars

The greens iron unfortunately broke down on the 1st green so we were unable to smooth them out following the March greens maintenance. This has now been fixed and will be back in action as time and conditions allow. The new 2026R John Deere compact tractor arrived in March which replaces an unreliable 18 year old Iseki tractor.

The 16th green seemed to suffer the most with grass cover this winter. Hopefully the tree topping that was carried out will now allow more autumn sun so we can go into winter with a healthier sward. Trees blocking air flow and sunlight makes holes 1-5 much wetter/muddy now in my opinion.

The 7th path renovation work that was planned for Autumn 2022 got postponed due to a large irrigation pump replacement bill. This will now be a project for Autumn/Winter 2023

The 6th hole may be closed and 7th tee put at the top of the hill whilst the work is carried out

From your Greens Chairman: Neil Dixon

Just to reiterate what Colin has said and to thank him and his team for all their hard work and dedication throughout a rough winter Signs of spring are definitely here and with a bit more warmth and sunshine the course will go from strength to strength.

It’s worth mentioning the amount of time Colin and his team put into saving the Club unnecessary expense. Just one example is the fitting of the brand new irrigation pump which saved the Club almost £1,000.

You may have noticed the greenside bunker on the 4th hole has now been turned into a grass swale. This is to allow more time to be spent on less troublesome bunkers. You will also see that extensive work has taken place to reshape the greenside bunker on the 5th hole The Greens Committee hopes that both these improvements enhance the course and the players’ experience.

We look to continually improve the course and with that you will also notice or may have noticed that we re-laid the temporary green

AROUND THE GREENS

in front of the 3rd hole What we are trying to achieve is to improve all facets of the course on a rolling basis, whether that is the tees, bunkers, paths, drainage. I could go on. However what we cannot do is complete all these things at once and so it may seem that things may be done ad hoc, but we are trying to improve things as finances will allow but mainly with the time that our greenkeepers have to put to those projects. I hope you will join me in congratulating the greens staff for the course they produce year after year, on what is a limited budget and with a very short window to complete the work.

Congratulations Colin! 25 year anniversary

Colin, our fantastic Head Greenkeeper is celebrating 25 years with us in May. Colin is a brilliant greenkeeper and team manager who works tirelessly for our Golf Club. We appreciate everything you do to ensure our course is top notch and the very best it can be all year round.

Colin was congratulated by our Captains and Presidents and presented with a gift from the Club.

What an amazing day we had in memory of Jean Spence on what was the third anniversary of her funeral in 2020 Jean was our Ladies' Competition Secretary when she died very suddenly at the age of only 61, just days before lockdown in March 2020. Only seven people were allowed to attend the funeral Husband Colin, daughter Emma, family and friends pulled out all the stops to honour Jean with an incredible Memorial Day both at MGC and with a hockey match in Buckley. With bright colours the order of the day and the sun shining it was a fantastic tribute to a wonderful lady with a celebration party held in the evening

Thank you to all event sponsors, prize donors, cake makers and volunteers helping on the day and to everyone who took part. The courtesy of the course was given for this special occasion. £1,374 was raised in support of Deeside Hospital where Jean worked

Marketing Committee

The Marketing Committee is a small group of member volunteers consisting of John Ross, Jean Ross, John Evans and Graham Griffiths, chaired by John Green and ably assisted by Club Manager Debbie Barton Their objective is to assist in the delivery of MGC’s five year Marketing Plan agreed by Management in 2019 which focused on the following areas:

Membership recruitment

Membership retention

Visitor marketing and retention

Clubhouse marketing

Community relationships

Membership recruitment - the current New2Golf, Back2Golf and 18 for 12 joining offer has been widely circulated on social media, advertised in regional and local magazines and the Committee has personally visited local estate agents, gyms, community shops, hotels and B&Bs

Membership retention - Debbie continues with her much appreciated member emails, a key communication aid. New member information packs and "Meet and Greet" evenings aim to help new members settle in The Committee would also like to thank the Captain, Lady Captain, President, Lady President and other officials for making new members and visitors so welcome to our club, also our bar staff Anne, Tommy, Steve and John who go out of their way to welcome new faces

Visitor marketing and retention - in addition to our advertising on social media, we are active in distributing club leaflets to local hotels, B&Bs, lodge & caravan parks. In conjunction with Golf Now we are evaluating the use of their visitor booking service. All visitors are receiving details of our Opens and Membership.

Working with Flintshire County Council Leisure & Tourism, the Club has recently joined the Flintshire Tourism Association to promote golf on their website www.cometo.wales

John Evans and Graham Griffiths have taken on responsibility for the July Opens and are looking for help from members on the days involved.

In addition, Gateway to Wales is promoting a new three course golf pass to target visitors who take advantage of a short break in Flintshire This may be of interest to members who have relatives visiting the area. Details are available in the Club shop. Holiday Inn A55 Chester West who are sponsors of our bar cards are also active with their social media site in promoting Gateway to Wales Golf Passes

Clubhouse Marketing – the social Committee has organised several events which have been successful We are also active in promoting the benefits of social membership to visitors to the Club and through posters on social media

We have also been successful in promoting the hire of the clubhouse in new places, in particular with funeral directors

Community relationships – our intention here is to create a good relationship with the communities living within a seven mile radius of Mold Golf Club so that newcomers to the area receive positive feedback. We are achieving this through regular features on social media, local press etc. In addition we have a very successful relationship with Flintshire County Council Leisure & Tourism and now Flintshire Tourism Association.

2023 EVENTS

In January the Social Committee agreed a varied programme of events over the course of the year, ranging from a murder mystery evening and live music gigs to night golf and a Captains’ Charity Auction.

The programme commenced with the Ladies’ gin-tasting evening enjoyed by all, followed by the successful Murder Mystery evening in February (featuring our very own member Doug Jones), which was a sell-out and received much positive feedback. Members really got into the spirit of the occasion dressing for the 1940s The Karaoke evening in March attracted some considerable vocal talent and turned out to be a really fun evening. Most recently an evening of country music by Tennessee Waltz was a great success

Matt Pugin, our new coaching assistant, is proving a big hit with our group students with many also starting to book private sessions We have one of the best training facilities in the region, indoors and out, and are confident that through our ongoing coaching initiatives we can continue to help existing members reach their goals whilst continuing to welcome more new golfers to the Club.

On the Pro Shop side of things, a reminder that although our shop space is relatively small, we have direct access to all of Foregolf, Chester’s stock at the UKs lowest prices, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch or call in to discuss your equipment needs. We also continue to offer a full custom fitting service in-house for Ping equipment and liaise directly with the team at Foregolf for all other brands.

Bethan, Sue and Sue continue to do a great job in our reception Pro Shop helping me cater for all of our members and visitors with the retail side of things It can be a very busy job at times so we appreciate all of your patience and support if we are unable to serve you as quickly as we would like

We’d also like to update you on the situation regarding your MGC Pro Shop account credit. Where possible, it would be greatly appreciated if you can order through our Pro Shop and not instore at Foregolf, Chester This will hopefully help us continue to work with Foregolf in the long term as it will keep our required turnover on target, with them stocking our Pro Shop and helping us offer all of the leading brands. This would be impossible as an independent golf retailer If you see anything you would like online or in-store at Foregolf, please let us know or inform them that you would like it to be delivered to MGC. This will then be delivered directly to us for you to utilise your account credit. This will help us safeguard our partnership which is very important to Mold Golf Club
