The 2021 IIDA Design Competition required two design solutions for a primary care clinic in Chicago, Illinois: one for a partia renovation and another for a full renovation. The design aimed to enhance physician efficiency, create a seamless patient experience, and foster a sense of “homefulness” and well-being.
DESIGN CONCEPT 1 - FULL RENOVATION

The renovation of the primary clinic aims to enhance flexibility, comfort, and freshness by thoughtfully incorporating geometry, circulation, and color. The design optimizes physician efficiency and fosters a seamless patient experience through an open floor plan that promotes a bright, welcoming atmosphere. A carefully curated palette of white and blue evokes a sense of cleanliness, tranquility, and simplicity, reinforcing the clinic’s commitment to health and well-being.

DESIGN CONCEPT 2 - PARTIAL RENOVATION

The concept for the partial renovation of the primary clinic is rooted in the principles of lightness and tranquility. Drawing inspiration from natural aesthetics and meditation, the design features a soft color palette and warm wood finishes to cultivate a sense of “homefulness” and well-being. Ample natural light and the use of ash wood work together to reduce patient stress, while glowing patterns along the hallway evoke the peaceful sensation of walking along a rural path.

Surrounded by Lake Michigan and located near Chicago, Northerly Island provides a spatial opportunity that would benefit the communities with urban farming and public well-being. The Center for nutrition and wellness supports education, production, and preparation of food through growing/farming, workshops, lectures, and community engagement.

“Community farming enhances public wellbeing by providing fresh, locally sourced food and promoting sustainable living practices.
Urban food gardens not only address food insecurity but also strengthen community bonds, providing spaces for social interaction, mental wellness, and environmental stewardship.”
