Introducing Our Amazing Campus Assistants

A Glimpse into Their Lives

Have you ever wondered about your school staff? Like what they did for fun or what led them to work at a school? Well we interviewed our Campus Assistants here at Mojave High School and found out some interesting facts about them. From their favorite pastimes to their fears and regrets and previous job experiences. I bet you wouldn’t guess what they’ve done and gone through just by looking at them.

His job entailed finding toxic chemicals and poisons that could affect our military. One of the scariest things he’s done was jump out of aircrafts while in the military. Although Jorge was left disabled due to the time he served; he regrets not staying longer in the military. Accordingly, he’s paid by both the military and railroad for the time he’s worked there.

Although he dropped out of high school, he went back to school and got his adult high school diploma. He regrets not going back to school earlier because it was harder for him to learn. Ever since he’s realized that education is important he’s been furthering his

THE HOWL: Issue 2 October 2023

studies. Jorge went to school to become an underwater welder; while there he joined a program to be a diver medic. With the knowledge learned at that time he went on to be an EMT. Side Story: He told the story of when he was transporting a young lady who was a psych patient. His partner didn’t see the need to restrain her; keep in mind that his partner was a smaller woman. While driving, he heard a scuffle and turned back to see the patient trying to kiss his partner. He obviously pulled over to help her and in turn restrained the psych patient.

He has a Harley and enjoys spending his free time riding his bike on the beach while listening to music. Jorge has a large palette of music; he listens to everything from classic rock to gospel. However his favorite song is Drift Away by Uncle Kracker. He’s been in a motorcycle group with his wife for around twelve years. Within said group, he helps with events such as weddings or just supports its members by praying for them. He tries to be the light in a dark place for the people around him.

Jorge is thankful for being alive; he’s made some bad decisions that make him think he shouldn’t be, but values everyday since he is alive. Some of his best years were in high school and if given the opportunity to relive any moment of his life he’d choose high school. Over the years his values haven’t changed; they've just grown stronger. At the top of his bucket list is going to Israel. He’s religious so wants to visit the place Jesus walked and talked. His greatest accomplishment is being a dad to his five children; two girls, three boys.

Sarah Griego

Sarah was the first in her immediate family to graduate high school, receive her bachelor’s, and she’s now in classes to get her master’s degree. Since she wanted to focus on her education and enjoyed working with kids, she decided to work here at Mojave as a campus assistant while still attending school. Her favorite aspects of the job are her interactions with the students and her coworkers. She’s rightly annoyed by

THE HOWL: Issue 2 October 2023

unwarranted disrespect from students. Her greatest year so far was 2020 when she received her bachelor's degree.

Her values have remained the same but have strengthened over the years. The number one thing on her bucket list is to travel all over the world. Her desire to travel is a reason she regrets not joining the military. If she had joined right after high school as she intended to, she would've been able to travel and college would’ve been paid for by the government. She believes her life would have been totally different if she had joined. Although she loves her daughters she probably wouldn’t have had them that early on.

Sarah listens to all genres of music but country. She enjoys spending her free time outdoors doing activities such as offroading. The bravest thing Sarah has done was perform CPR. Since up until that point she’s been required to learn it for multiple jobs but has never put that knowledge into practice. She’s glad she learned it in case she needs to perform it on any of her children. Side Story: A scary moment was when she needed to clear her daughter's airway when she swallowed a quarter. While in a panic, she roughly patted her daughters back until she heard something hit the ground. Since then Sarah’s daughter has learned from that experience and now hands loose change to her. Although her daughters being physically injured is a fear of hers, her biggest fear is that her children try to please others instead of accomplishing their own goals.

Sarah is a mother to three daughters and said having her first child was a life-changing experience. She said that due to the financial, emotional, and mental changes she experienced after her daughter's birth. She’s constantly challenged with keeping a balance between her work, home, and school life. A difficult lesson Sarah has learned is that the world keeps spinning no matter what happens in your life. No matter how dramatic and heartbreaking, you have to keep going. She wouldn’t want to relive any moment in her life; she believes that there's a reason why we have those moments even the good ones should just be reminisced. She advises that you should look forward to your future and what's to come.

Although he wouldn’t wish to return if it meant that other aspects of his life would be affected such as his family. When his son was injured in a sport related injury Walter advised him to stop due to his experience and his son did.

FUN FACTs: Walter’s son Christopher used to be the tech guy here at Mojave. Walter said that working with his son was fun while it lasted. He’s been together with his wife for 33 years and married for 32. His advice on relationships is to communicate with your partner. When asked of his happiest memories thus far he replied with his wedding and the birth of his son. He also said his best year would be 1993 the year his son was born.

Walter is passionate about woodworking and art; he enjoys building and fixing things. He’s even ran his own screen printing business for over twenty years. He has also created artwork for multiple companies. FUN FACT: Walter wanted to become an art teacher but couldn’t due to not meeting the job requirements. He dropped out of college art classes after his art teacher smeared his charcoal drawing and told him to be messier. This really affected him, because he was and is a detailed artist; he prefers things to be balanced and

Walter feels as though you get challenged everyday, even with normal daily tasks. He said when you’re making money you think you’ll be fine but once that money stops all you have left is your education. His favorite part about himself is that he’s a kind, honest, and reliable person. He’s the type of person to bend over backwards to help someone in need; he’d give you the shirt off his back if need be. Though he doesn’t expect people to know that about him based on his looks.

Canelo vs Charlo

On September 30th, Canelo Alvarez will be boxing in the ring and putting up his 4 belts at 168 (middleweight) vs Charlo. Jermell Charlo is from Lafayette Louisiana, standing at 5 '11, with 35 wins and one loss. Canelo is from Guadalajara, Mexico, standing at 5’8 with 59 wins and 2 losses. With Canelo being the favorite in the fight. The odds are set up as -420 for Canelo and +330 for Charlo, with Charlo being the underdog in this fight. With this fight having high stakes the fight will be streamed on Showtime, PPV. The purse is going to be pretty substantial. After interviewing 7 students about who they thought was going to win the fight, 6 of the students said they believe Canelo would win because his head movement and defense will help him win the fight. One student said that Charlo's offense will allow him to win. It looks like it will be the battle between Charlos' offense and Canelos' defense.

The aftermath-After going 12 rounds, Charlo and Canelo went to unanimous decision with the scorecards which had Canelo 118- Charlo 109 leaving Canelo the winner. So now we can positively say that Canelos' defense, head movement, and counter punches allowed him to beat Charlo’s whose raw strength and aggressiveness weren’t enough. To also add that Charlo was knocked down in the 7th round showed who the superior fighter was

NFL Season

Another NFL season has begun. With 32 NFL teams competing for The Lombardi Trophy, the possibilities of who will win the Super Bowl are endless In the NFL there are always favorites, the top 3 on Draftkings for the AFC are the Kansas City Chiefs, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Buffalo Bills and for the favorites for the NFC are the San Francisco 49ers, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Dallas Cowboys. On Draftkings the top 4 teams favored to win the 2024 Super Bowl are the San Francisco 49ers, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Dallas Cowboys but it’s only the beginning of the new season and there’s still a long football season ahead of us. With the possibilities being endless, there are still so many possible outcomes for Superbowl 57. We interviewed a few students and staff members to see what their picks are.

Mr.Fore’s favorite NFL team is the Miami Dolphins. He thinks that his Miami Dolphins will win SuperBowl 57. Christian Hernandez, MHS student, favors the Philadelphia Eagles to win SuperBowl 57. He believes that the Eagle’s have a passion to win, and they want revenge after losing to the chiefs last year in SuperBowl 56. Isaac Gomez, another MHS student, favors the Las Vegas Raiders to win SuperBowl 57 because the Raiders are his favorite team. Daniel Quintero, student, thinks the Superbowl is gonna end up being 49ers vs Jets. He thinks the 49ers will win because of their point avg.

Who do you think will win?

Issac Gomez

ords of Wisdom from Assistant perintendent, Issac Newman mez

had the pleasure and honor of interviewing peria Unified School District Assistant erintendent, Mr. Newman-Gomez. Read on to out more about his…

What was your high school experience like? “I went to Sultana High School and I liked it. I graduated in 97’ which was the first graduating class for Sultana. I have to tell you that I was more focused on going to college than high school I had just moved up here my senior year. I really enjoyed it. I liked playing basketball there. I thought the school was good. I got what I needed but I just wanted to play basketball in college and so I would go to school, I would go to practice, and I would go home that was it.”

Is this what you thought you would be doing? “No, not at all. I actually thought I was going to be a teacher I always wanted to be a teacher and the reason is because when I grew up I had some teachers, and of course my mom, that really just made me think. I liked math. My best math teachers made math entertaining so I wanted to do that for other people. I majored in math and I always wanted to be a math teacher. I never was going to be a principal but actually the principles that I worked for were the ones that kept encouraging me to become an administrator. After a year of telling me that I should do that I finally went and I did it and I really enjoyed it It’s fun! I remember the principal of the first school I worked at sold me on it. He said he knew I liked helping kids and he asked me, “How many kids do you help every year?” So I counted it out, 200, and he replied, “How would you like to help 2200?” That got me.

THE HOWL: Issue 2 October 2023

What do you love about your job? “There are many different things to like about my job but I really like supporting the different kinds of programs we have. Obviously as a math major and a math teacher, I loved the course subjects of math, English, science, social studies, those are important? But I think the way we make those subjects powerful is by engaging kids and making them want to come to school for all these other programs we have. My department is the one behind Esports and we help support athletics. I love that we’re doing journalism, debate teams, and robotics, and the list keeps growing. I don't know if you all know, but the other districts don't necessarily have all of these things. They have one or two, but not all of them. I liked math. I was kind of a nerd. I liked Star Wars and school, but I don't think the average student gets excited about waking up and coming to school I don’t know that many would say, “I can't wait for math class”. I don't think that's it. You might come because, “Man I can't wait for Journalism class, it's gonna be awesome!” or, “Oh yeah, Esports we’re going to be playing Sultana today”, and the soccer player, “Oh yeah, we’re going to practice today!” and the CTE construction guy, “Oh yeah, we’re going to finish building that house today!” l don't care why you are excited to go to school, I just care that students get excited to go to school For me, that’s the thing that I am the most happy about that I get to do everyday.”

What’s the best career decision you’ve ever made? “I would say coming to Hesperia Unified District is probably the best career decision I ever made. I liked where I was teaching, a teacher at Apple Valley High School. I was having a good time, but do you remember when I said that we do all of these things, not just a couple of them? That mentality where I think we should do a variety of things to help kids get excited about school is something that really fits with what I think. That's why it's so important to me. You don't have to go to college to be successful; that's not what we're about. If you want to go to college, we’ll help you go to college and you're going to be super successful. But if you want to become a beautician or a dental assistant or an auto mechanic or a journalist we’ll help you do those things too I think a lot of schools have a circle and if you don't fit in the circle you get rejected. In our school district, we have so many different shapes! Students can pick which one they’re going to go into. “I want to be a mechanic; I want to be this; I want to be that, and that's what I’m all about. I went to college and it worked out for me. I liked it. But not everybody needs to do that.”

What past jobs have you had? How did you like those? “I worked fast food I didn't grow up rich. I grew up the way I grew up, so I worked fast food. I was a bouncer at clubs and parties, like security. I can honestly tell you I didn't like any of my other jobs before I

THE HOWL: Issue 2 October 2023

became a teacher. Before I finished my college degree my best-paying job was fifteen dollars an hour. I thought that was great, and it is good, there's nothing wrong with that, but when I graduated and I became a teacher all of a sudden they were giving me way more money and all I had was this piece of paper. In all honesty, the teaching job was way harder than the other jobs that I had.

If you could tell your younger self something what would it be? “I would say stay the course and don't give up. I don't think my younger self was a give-up-easily kind of guy, but I would just reinforce it. Stay the course and don't give up. People run into rides thinking I'm gonna come out untouched. Like the boxer that goes in the boxing match, ‘I'll knock the guy out and never get hit’. That’s usually not the way it works You're going to take some hits and you're going to outlast the other person. You don't go through life unscathed, you outlast life. Be determined to get back up. Muhammad Ali said, ‘there is nothing wrong with getting knocked down; there is something wrong with staying down’.”

What advice would you give a high school graduate? “Get a post high school education or training; not necessarily college For example, say you're going to be an auto mechanic. If you get certified you can start working for BMW working on the computers in the car and they start at like 80-90K a year. But you need to get that certification. The good news is that you can get a lot of the certifications while you're going to school here at MHS. Like the dentistry room on the back campus. You can come out of that program fully certified to be a dental assistant. A high school diploma is great, but you really do need some type of certification afterward The good news is a lot of our kids are graduating from high school with that certification because of the different programs we have.”

What has been your greatest life lesson? “Greatest life lesson…life's not about being perfect, it's about not giving up, that's what I would say.”

How did you get to this point in your career? “Hard work and perseverance. I love America; I think it's the greatest country in the world because of my experience. I didn't

THE HOWL: Issue 2 October 2023

grow up with a bunch of money. I'm Hispanic, which some consider an obstacle, but it wasn’t because America has always rewarded me for hard work. If I work hard enough, they want to reward me.They just want you to work hard and not give up and I've kept doing that and I keep getting rewarded for it and that's why I'm happy. I have teenage sons and they go to school here in the district at Hesperia High School I'm excited about their future because America is still to this day willing to reward you for hard work.”

What is your key to success? “Probably the same thing so I would say hard work and perseverance, but if I wanted to add to that I would say a positive attitude.”

What's the challenge you've faced? How did you overcome it? “Just one!? Life is full of challenges so it's hard to focus on just one. Especially if you have the mentality that you expect challenges, they don’t surprise you, you just expect them and then you beat them. Well, I grew up without someone to follow as far as going to college, getting a career, working everyday, saving for retirement. I didn't have anybody to model that for me So what I did was surround myself with people who were interested in the same kind of pursuits and worked hard at it. You try hard. You have an open mind. When I was younger I played basketball. Nobody in my family played basketball. We all were football players but I liked basketball. I didn't have anybody to model myself after, so I found Michael Jordan. I thought he was the greatest basketball player; to this day I think he's the greatest basketball player that ever played. And so [I thought] if he can do it, I can do it He’s human I’m human, I can do this So I started to try to learn about the things he did and how he achieved them. I would try and model after that. You know what's crazy though it never crossed my mind that he was African American and I'm Mexican, I don't understand how people need someone who looks just like them to model themselves after. He's human, I'm human. I can do it too. So I modeled myself after him. That's exactly the same thing I did here. I started talking and surrounding myself with people who were interested in the same things and just worked hard My sons for instance, if they wanted to become teachers I could tell them step by step how you do it. I didn't have that but I beat it by having an open mind, asking questions, and working hard.”

The Mr. Jesfen Interview

What is your Favorite Halloween Movie? “I'm not really into scary movies; the horrors, the jasons, the freddys and all those are not really my cup of tea. I would have to say Hocus Pocus is probably my favorite because I remember watching the first one when I was little and the second one just came out and I watched it with my kids.”

What is Your Favorite Pair of Sneakers? “I'm literally wearing them right now, the purple and gold J’S for repping my team. The Lakers are literally my favorite sneaker but I like Jordan.”

What is Your Dream Car? “I’m not a huge car guy but I can appreciate cars. When I was in highschool my dad had a 1965 Mustang, one of those old school nice mustangs. He drove it around and worked on it a little bit then eventually he gave it to my brother. Now my brother has it. I still see it every once in a while but it’s runned down, all rusted up and it's just sitting there. If money wasn't an issue it would be that exact 1965 Mustang. As far as a car I would buy, my wife really wants a Porsche 9/11 so I would probably buy her that car.”

What was One Halloween Costume You Were/ Loved Growing Up? “The first thing that comes to my mind was when my brother and I were little we dressed up as the main characters from the Little Rascals. My brother was more of a rounder kid while I was more of a “stretchier” kid so we were perfect for Porky and Alfalfa. On Halloween, our mom put his hair up and took a picture. For some reason that picture was on the mantle and she

THE HOWL: Issue 2 October 2023

would always say, “Remember when we dressed you up like the little Rascals?” and I would be like, "Haha, very funny mom.”

What Made You Want to Become a Teacher?

I think this is a question teachers should ask themselves every year, so it's something they don't slip up on. I didn't really plan to be a teacher. When I went through college I got a Liberal Studies degree so that left the door open to become a teacher. I really started as a football coach; one day the HHS freshman football coach, Mitch Cox, asked me if I would ever be interested in coaching football. I hadn't really thought of it but I had extra time and my wife was a teacher so I thought I'd give back a little bit to the school. I started coaching football and just fell in love with coaching being around kids. I love being able to mold, shape, and teach them life lessons. Then I started subbing in the classroom and I felt like I was good at it and I liked it. It was a good career path for me.”

If You Could Leave a Piece of Information For the Next 10 Generations What Would it Be?

“It’s hard to narrow it down, but I think the tv shows and movies that I’m watching always try to get something out of it. If I'm going to spend two hours watching a movie I’m going to ask myself, what's the meaning behind it? What's the deeper message? What is the actor’s story? What is the director trying to tell me? Yeah, sure there are movies where you turn your brain off for two hours, laugh and have a good time, but I like a movie that leaves you with a message. One of my favorite movies/ film series is the Lord of the Rings. In those movies it's all about perseverance and good vs. evil and overcoming all the challenges you face in life. With that in mind what I think I would tell future generations would be to keep being curious and keep learning. I always tell people I'm a lifelong learner. I didn't stop learning when I turned 14. I didn't stop learning when I turned 18 and was done with highschool. I didn’t stop learning when I turned 22 and was done with college. I won’t stop learning.”

THE HOWL: Issue 2 October 2023

How Would You Describe Your Highschool Experience? “It's interesting, because I talk to some of my friends and I’ll tell them ‘remember this happened in highschool’ and they would say ‘nah man, I haven't thought of highschool in twenty years’, but because I'm a teacher in highschool and I'm always interacting with highschool kids it's always bringing back memories and i'm constantly thinking about it. I really liked highschool. I remember being in football before I went into my freshman year so when that day came I already knew all of the guys on the team and I knew all the coaches and most of them were teachers also. I made friends pretty easily but I was a pretty shy kid. I would just hang out with the guys and my brother was a year younger than me so I would hang out with him at lunch. My parents were strict about grades. I would get home from school and practice until 4 or 5 o’clock, do homework until about 6 or 7, watch t.v. for about 30 minutes and then go to sleep at 8:30, then wake up the next day and do it again. For me, highschool was I don't want to say easy but that's how it was for me. I'm not saying I didn't try in school, it just kind of came effortlessly. I had a 4.2 gpa and got a scholarship from the University of Irvine, and I was off to college on a dean's award. ”

If You Could go Back In Time to Change What Kind of Career You Have, Would You and What Would It Be? “It’s interesting you say that because my goal at the time when I was in college was to be a doctor. I wanted to help people. I still am interested in science: medicine, biology, genetics, and all those things Mr.Kirby teaches about; but if you were to ask 18 year old Mr.J, 2nd day of college, ‘Hey what are you going to do?’ I would have said I'm going to be a doctor. No one in my family was a doctor and to this day no one is a doctor, so I would have been the first in my family. I realize it would have been a hard journey had I stuck to it but yeah I think I would pick a doctor.”

Cars

It's time to show some awesome coyote rides!

Driving into campus you can’t help but notice some amazing cars in the coyote parking lot. We interviewed a few of the lucky drivers to learn more about their cars and their experience with it.

Let me introduce you to Lucas Maragno, he's a dude who's all about cars. His dream car is a 2021 Shelby GT 500. Lucas is the kind of guy who’s always hanging around car scenes, and he's a big fan of manual transmissions because he loves having full control behind the wheel. He's cruising in a 2010 SRT Challenger, packing a 6.1 hemi and a slick 6 speed manual gearbox. He's done quite a few mods: colder intake, mid muffler delete, shifter swap, and slick tires. Lucas is all about that raw power and as for electric cars, well lets just say he's not really feeling them.

I had a chat with Mrs. Estrada , our cool teacher and it turns out she's got some cool car vibes. Her dream car is a 1987 SS Monte Carlo. But there's a twist: she's not just into cars, she's actually part of a car club down the hill and hits up car shows. She's got a couple of classic cars in her collection too. Mrs. Estrada is all about automatic transmissions because

THE HOWL: Issue 2 October 2023

it's what she knows how to drive but she is open to learning manuals someday. What she drives now is a Tesla, the Y version which she got in 2021. She even decked it out with autopilot and tinted windows. Her thoughts on electric cars, she thinks they're super convenient for people who commute a lot. But if she didn't have to commute a lot she'd trade it for a G Wagon.

Let me introduce you to Mark Marrow, a car fan with a dream car, a 98 Honda Civic. He got inspired by his brother who had one as a kid. Marks all about drag racing and car meets. He thinks automatics are faster nowadays due to quick shift times but he admits manuals are less boring. He fully built his Civic in a year, with mods like rods, pistons, a turbo, bull horn headers and more. He's into electric cars, especially Teslas, but would trade his ride for a 5.0 Fox Body Mustang. It's all about that car love, and he’s living his dream.

How Has Fashion Inspired You?

How fashion can inspire you in different ways!

We had the chance to interview a few students on their fashion and get a little more detail on their choices to dress how they want and if they have been inspired. We even got pictures of them!!

Everyone has their own personal unique style, many get inspired from many different sources. Seeing all the different fashion choices all around is truly inspiring, it can have an effect on how others might want to start dressing. I got to interview two people with similar styles and see the differences and similarities when it comes to how they dress. Branden Reyes says he wears whatever feels right on him, his style evolved his sophomore year, he got inspired by his friend, his fashion has a more skater vibe. Revel Baker says he wears anything he sees around him or anything he sees on social media, he didn't start dressing up until his middle school years, his junior year is when his style evolved, he got inspired by skaters. Both these students have very unique styles, they have very similar ways they dress They do have different reasons for the way they dress and different inspirations.

Best Pizza Review in High Desert

We rated the high desert’s best pizza. Here are our picks:

The 1st pizza that is the best out of all 4 is Dominos, it has a good flavor, a perfect amount of all toppings and the texture was good at its price of 18$ for a large, We rate domino's pizza 8.5/10.

Little Caesars is in 2nd place. We rate little caesars 7/10, their texture is good, the toppings are fine but they put too much tomato sauce in the pizza but for a price of 9$ it's very good.

In third is Red Barons. We rated it a 6/10. Its texture is good, toppings are fine but it's very oily and for a large it's probably not the healthiest and its price is around $20.

Now in 4th place out of all, it is Pizza Hut having the worst rating at a staggering 3/10 for having so little topping and having not much texture and it was very dry, and it sure comes out at the expensive price of 21$. But at the end we all have our own taste

What do you think is the best pizza of the HD?
