How Has Fashion Changed Throughout the Years

We actually got the chance to take some pictures of a couple people who we thought had a sense of fashion & even got to interview a few of them.

Many different styles and aesthetics exist and many have their own fashion inspirations Everyone has different aesthetics and styles & that goes for clothing as well. Many people dress in a variety of ways even if some styles repeat themselves from way back When you look in a high school you see a variety of people wearing baggy pants with a shirt, while others are probably wearing skinny jeans and a crop top Luckily, I got the chance to interview 2 out of the 4 people & ask them what their inspiration or motive for dressing a certain way Sophie Arcila says that her motive for dressing is to feel good about herself and express her unique personality through her outfits, about embracing her individuality and having fun with fashion. Maxwell says his inspiration for the way he dresses comes from a mix of different sources. He loves browsing fashion magazines, following style influencers on social media, and exploring different fashion trends

This Month’s Album Picks

We rated two albums that were recommended to us by Isaiah Gutierrez: Luv 4 Rent by Smino and Adrenaline by the Deftones Here is our honest review

Luv 4 Rent By Smino

Omar Garcia says: “It’s a good album if you’re trying to get into new music” We like it too because it’s really versatile, every song has its own style and you’re bound to like a couple of the songs.

Adrenaline by Deftones

This is a great album to start on if you want to get into Deftones or the genre “Nu metal”. The best song in my opinion would have to be Engine No.9 because it has heavy bass guitar and drums. The least good sounding one would have to be fist, it is just one of those songs that don't really sound that good even though this band is great, also the lyrics don't really sound good either The lyrics are loud if you like that type of music, just like most of their albums they sound unique and different from other bands of their generation.

Students at MHS tell us what they think.

To understand the new and returning students here at Mojave highschool, we interviewed some students to get their perspective about lunches and classes

Javier Nava, senior, recommends that they add ketchup to the lunch His favorite classroom is Mrs Estrada’s and that they need better ac

Cristian, senior, said he likes the school lunch but just wishes they didn’t run out as fast as they do. His favorite class is Mr.Kuhns and likes this school more than his previous one.

Adam Garcia’s (junior) favorite class is Ms Gollmyer thinks the lunch is okay and says they should add more ketchup

New student at Mojave high school Amare Phillips, junior, claims that the class that he’s most excited about is Forensic science with Mr. Kirby. When asked about what he would like to see on the school menu he said he “likes the school food right now” and doesn't feel the need to add anything. Amare also believes that coming here to Mojave high school is good and benefits his education.

Teacher Spotlight

Inside the mind of Mr. McHugh

We interviewed the fun-loving MHS P.E. and E-Sports teacher, Mr McHugh, to discover more about the inner workings of his mind.

How do you feel about the new school year? “I'm really excited about the E-sport program the ability to complete with other schools in the district in overwatch and Rocket Lead”

What did you do before teaching? “I was a snowboarding instructor at Big Bear, it was for ages 4-7 I also ran an after school program in an elementary school I spent the majority of my time in college working at Chipotle ”

What’s something at home that brings you joy? At home there are many things that bring me joy but I for sure have a soft spot for my Mr Kitty (Scooter) and my PC (BumbleBee) =]

If you could eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? “ Definitely Red Curry, it’s Indian food. It is like a delicious sauce with tons of vegetables [Runners up] would be Thai food or pizza because it's hard to be upset at pizza ”

What inspired you to become a teacher? “I always wanted to become a teacher. This is because from a very young age I had the ability to explain problems and concepts in many different ways It would help complicated ideas be more fun and easier to understand. That's why I like teaching math, E-sports, and P.E and that's why I got my degree in mathematics.”

How do you feel about the new school year? I am looking forward to this school year especially to teach Can Jam and Disk Golfing.

What is your favorite word and why? Purple, because purple goes hard and it is an answer to every question

Teacher Spotlight

Getting to know Ms. Gollmyer

We interviewed adored Ms Gollmyer, ASB teacher at Mojave, about herself, school, and life experiences in order to showcase her awesomeness

How do you feel about teaching ASB this year?

“I am ecstatic I’m super hopeful that we can support our students build leadership and increase positive school culture”

What’s one of your talents? “ I can make fun out of anything” One of my friends once said that I could make a dental appointment fun I want to have fun no matter what”!

“What’s something you look forward to this year? “I’m looking forward to bringing out the talents of each of our students and being able to step aside and allow them to shine and build up that leadership because we have some really talented students here at Mojave”

What’s something you like to do in your spare time? “I love dancing and singing karaoke because it brings joy to my heart even though I’m terrible. I like to do it at the Moose Lodge where there are alot of senior citizens who encourage me”

What advice would you give to students? “My advice to students is to not use the act of comparison to define yourself. Right now in 2023 in Hesperia, it’s hard to not compare ourselves to those around us. Something I’ve noticed when students first come to Mojave they think they’re failures and that’s not the case. Maybe they failed classes, but they are not failures Very challenging things have happened in their life and now they’re here and they have the opportunity to showcase who they are Once they become a coyote you can never go back because coyotes are amazing!”

What inspired you to become a teacher? “Coaching soccer I was playing soccer at VVC and me and my best friend were pissed because the coach asked some of our teammates to go help as JV coaches at Granite Hills High School and we were mad because we thought we were the leaders We basically decided we would coach at Apple Valley High School and beat them, which we did Once I started coaching soccer I realized how amazing being around teenagers is Being able to help them find their own potential and find out who they are and support them with that made me realize this is the environment I want to be around I want to support students, so I became a teacher”.

What is your teaching philosophy? “Discover based I'm big on conversations, making connections with past experiences and things our students know Getting them to discover their own learning and being able to support them in the moment with understanding so they can develop those life skills and move on to bigger and better things”.

5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits So Cal

Watch Video Here - The moment 5.1 magnitude quake hits Ojai

On Sunday, August 20 a 5 1 earthquake struck Ventura county at 2:41 pm the same day that a tropical storm drenched California for the first time in decades It was felt widely across the region and with at least a dozen aftershocks of magnitude 3 0 or greater The earthquake was centered about four miles southeast of Ojai, about 80 miles northwest of Los Angeles Millions of Southern Californian's received urgent back-to-back emergency alerts on their phones, the first indicated a flash flood warning and the second warning of the Ventura County earthquake

A security camera video captures the moment the earthquake hit at Tres Hermanas restaurant in Ojai and a liquor store in Santa Paula There were no immediate reports of significant damage or injury, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s office The city fire department of Los Angeles was conducting surveys for damage "This is the first time we've had a 5 since 1932 in exactly this location, and even within the Ventura basin" said seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones. A magnitude-5.1 earthquake was reported in 1941 west of Sunday's quake, Jones said. Some of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake aftershocks were east of the location.

Work Experience Class

Paid Work Experience at MHS.

We interviewed Mr Von der Heide, Work Experience Program coordinator. Read on to find out about his class, how you can join to get amazing job experiences, and what you need to know to get a job.

What is your class about? “The work program here is called HUSDStudents@Work I've been doing something similar to this with the county for about 16 years Basically, it’s paid work experience in the community for Mojave students, so once you go through our class we will work right in this class where we help you develop a resume, job applications, mock interview, job search, and cover letter Then we will figure out your interests and partner you up with one of about 40 businesses in the community that we work with You interview with the business and then you're my employee. You will get about 200 hours in paid work experience at minimum wage. You will make about 3,000 dollars after your 200 hours and now you can start building your resume The second piece is hopefully after 200 hours the business trains you and if you are reliable and responsible that business will hopefully hire you for unsubsidized employment which we have a lot of after you’re done with your hours with us It's like a paid try-out with the business and you’re getting extra support at what you're doing.”

What inspired you to help students find job experiences? “I think it was my coaching mentality I coached basketball for a long time and when I stopped coaching about 15 or 16 years ago, a friend of mine was running a program that was similar to what I do here It was through the county grants and with those grants we were able to give students paid work experience or paid training after high school. I thought that was great because the students I usually work with are 18 to 22 years old and are struggling academically. [To those students] Sitting in a high school classroom makes no sense They have to start living life and living on their own so training them to graduate and then training them for what is going to happen after high school kind of became my focus I was awarded grants for 15 years and surfed thousands of kids over those years and it's just a good gig. I'm out in the community, I'm working with business, and helping kids transition and helping them figure out what they want to do after high school So it all made sense, that's kinda how I got into it ”

How can someone join your class? “It’s pretty simple, for one you have to be a senior because I will be working with the seniors to help them with the transition to after high school We actually have a new cohort starting September 11. Usually I want to walk in and talk to the English IV classes so I can get most of the seniors. The

THE HOWL ISSUE 1 SEPT. 2023

counselors and teachers know about it so you can ask them too. There's an HR code and an online application that you fill out and from that I determine your eligibility Then through emails I will tell you the class you’re in Also make sure you have your right to work documents If the student doesn’t have them we will help them get those. Then we start the class and go to work.”

What are some companies the students work with? “Well like I said we have 42 businesses so I can’t rattle all of them off, but the number one thing we try to do with participants is put them where they may have an interest in.

If you said you're interested in automotive we would put you at America’s Tires BUT we try to find jobs you can get to The number one reason young people fail at their jobs is they can’t get to work A business is not going to hire you if you can't get there. You might want to work at Best Buy in Apple Valley but if you don’t have reliable transportation I’m not going to put you there because it’s just setting you up for failure So the number one thing we will look at is where you live and try to find a placement and build out from there The businesses we use a lot are Little Caesars, most restaurants in the High Desert, America’s Tires, Walgreens, and Best Buy. If a student has a unique placement I will seek it out and see if I can find it for you.”

For how long have you been teaching? “31 years I started teaching in Los Angeles, I was a history teacher From there I moved to teaching special ed and I was always coaching basketball From LA I moved to San Bernardino for a while then came up to Hesperia and I’ve been in Hesperia for about 22 years now”

Do you have any advice for students outside of your class who are having trouble finding a job? “ Number one thing, make sure you have your right to work documents, your school ID will not fly out in the community so if you don’t have a California ID or driver's license I recommend you get them. They can interview you, love you, and want to hire you but if you don’t have that paperwork they are going to move on to the next person So get your right to work documents, California ID, Social Security Card or PassPort Do not just bring a picture of those documents you have to physically have those on you. Second thing, make a professional email, you are setting a professional career. If you don't have a professional email then it will get blended into your regular email and you might miss the email from the employer A lot of employers will contact your email via online applications saying come on in at this time So create that professional email with your first name last name and a couple of numbers. You can have multiple emails and gmails but a professional one is great so know that when you get a hit, you will know that it’s job related and it won’t get lost in the shuffle ”

What Exactly are Learning Disabilities?

Children with learning disabilities require the need of more help than normal students. Many children also may not know they have one nor parents, if you see struggles with learning in children more than usual the best thing to do is take them to get tested by a doctor There are many learning disabilities including dyslexia, language processing disorder and nonverbal learning disability and many more It's best to keep your cool and calm while trying to teach or even help a child with a learning disability There can be many reasons why people have learning disabilities. Hurricane Hilary!

One of the scariest hurricanes that California has ever expected

Hurricane Hilary started off as a storm off the Coast and to everyone's surprise it headed straight toward California and shocked many people. The last time we ever had a Hurricane this bad was back in 1997. It was a Category 4 and it hit the Pacific coast of Mexico and after it went towards Baja California

How bad was Hurricane Hilary? Some say it was really bad but most say it was just another rainy day in California Most places in the High Desert just had light rain and some flooded areas A utility pole was struck by lightning and shut down the 15 freeway in Barstow Roads were flooded across Death Valley National Park and was the rainiest day in recorded history of Furnace Creek (in Death Valley) Palm Springs and Indio declared a local state of emergency. Hilary broke rainfall records in Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Oregon. Besides all that, people were not able to go to work or school because of the areas that were flooded. Hesperia, Victor Valley, Apple Valley all closed schools on Monday due to road conditions.

A Misremembered Review of Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked

A (Rightfully) Forgotten Movie

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked was released back in winter of 2011 with less than stellar audience scores it leans more into comedy pertaining to the sea and ships referencing the Titanic and deserted island adventures. The first act of the movie is the ship part where Alvin and co enjoy their cruise while annoying Dave with their antics and of course one can never forget the licensed music present in any modern day animated kids film The second act involves Alvin and the chipmunks falling off the boat deck and landing on a deserted island that isn’t actually all that deserted This introduces a character I can’t seem to remember the name of but this act and character have pretty heavy handed references to Cast Away including a volleyball that the character talks to Anyways it would later be found out that the character who was thought to live there was actually a treasure hunter that had a map for-well treasure except it was inside of volcano Que a chase sequence where Alvin almost falls into a river and they make it back home in one piece.

As a movie it was pretty bad The first arc of the movie was mostly pointless, at least to me because the way I see it is that the island arc is not only the more important part but I feel like there could have been more comedic moments. The biggest criticism I have is that the movie isn’t funny, I know I’m not exactly the target demographic but even then most jokes tend to fall flat or just aren’t funny, the licensed songs doesn’t help either Honestly the acting itself is really good considering the CG animation for the chipmunks and it being the 2010’s My rating for Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is a 5 out of 10, I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to watch but if it’s playing in a hospital it’s not too bad.

A New Misremembered Review of Total Drama Season 1

A hilarious parody on the survival and reality T.V genre

“Total Drama” was a Canadian animated T V show airing in 2007 with 27 episodes. The series starts with the host, Chris McLean introducing the viewer to Total Drama Island, a reality

T V show in which contestants are assigned and must participate in challenges and win If they lose the challenge they have to vote someone in the team away by using their marshmallow to confirm if they’re staying or leaving. The grand prize for all these challenges and when only one contestant remains is $100,000. The show’s challenges are usually simple challenges with a twist, for example one of the first challenge is jumping off a ledge and landing in a ring on a pool of water Except the cliff is a mountain and the waters are shark infested the show often parody’s the survival genre by making the challenges borderline impossible with the reason for success being that it’s a cartoon

Honestly the first season of “Total Drama” was one of the most entertaining shows that was on air at the time it was easily one of the funniest shows in the late 2000’s I liked it because of its dirtier humor, of course there’s still fart jokes but it doesn’t typically overstay its welcome, unlike later seasons. All of the characters are also a lot of fun especially when they flail through the challenges. Another fun part of the show is the antagonist not being Chris but another contestant. That being Heather, where she constantly sabotages and manipulates her fellow teammates to have the best chance of winning Her appearance in the show made the challenges a lot more fun because it isn’t just the challenges they should worry about but what Heather does next as well Overall I’d say “Total Drama”’s first season is an 8 out of 10, it’s a show you should definitely watch if you have the time with its parodies of the survivor and reality T.V genre. It really puts its setting to good use.

Earlier Start Times at MHS

New start times, the change we love to hate.

As you are aware, all highschools in Hesperia Unified School District started earlier this year with MHS starting at 8am. This is a huge change from last years’ schedule which started at 9:30am The change to a later start time started with California Senate Bill 328 which requires highschools to begin no earlier than 8:30am Hesperia Unified, however, among other qualifying districts is exempt from this due to our “rural” status. Rural schools may begin earlier for rural reasons like getting up early to milk cows and such.

Ms Ivettee Cifuentes, MHS Attendance Specialist, gave us the low down on whether the schedule change is helping our students. When asked whether more students are showing up on time this year or last year, she responded, “This year-due to parents going in to work earlier they are able to drop off their kids on time instead of the kids relying on a ride or uber”

Waking up earlier however has its challenges. When asked how she personally felt about the change she said, “I dislike it because I have to wake up earlier It was better last year because we could get here later and we got more hours of sleep than having to wake up at five/six ”

But what effect do the new start times have on student performance? Mrs Dover told us that she thinks the change has improved her students’ performance because “their parents can drop them off and our classes are full everyday”. Here is what a few students said, “It affects my performance because I have to go to sleep earlier and wake up earlier, I kinda like the time change because we get out earlier and we have more free time”-Pablo Perez, 12th “It affects my grades because you will get tired while you work ”-Angelina Mendoza, 12th “I don't really like the schedule, I feel like I don't get enough sleep and it kind of does affect my grades a little bit because I'm tired throughout the day I don't really like starting earlier but I like leaving earlier ” Nicole Younggren, 12th
