MO Holstein Board Meeting

Members of the Missouri Holstein Association board of directors will have a short board meeting following the Missouri Holstein Field Day at Luck-e-Charm Holsteins, Leinbach’s on July 24. If you are unable to attend please be sure that another individual from your district takes your place so you don’t lose your vote. Thanks.

MO Holstein Distinguished Service Award

The Distinguished Service Award is bestowed upon a living current or former member, who in the opinion of the Missouri Holstein Association, has rendered outstanding and unselfish service for many years and thereby have made a notable contribution to the advancement of the Holstein breed in Missouri. Guidelines listed below.

1. Nominations may be made by any member to the Association Secretary and will be available for consideration for 3 years.

2. Each nomination must be accompanied by at least 1 letter of support.

3. The deadline for nominations is November 1st to MO Holstein Association Secretary.

4. Missouri Holstein Association limits the award to a maximum of two (2) recipients per year; depending on the number and merit of the nominees.

Awards do not have to be presented every year.

5. The recipient will be selected by an anonymous panel appointed by the President.

6. The recipient will receive a framed, appropriately worded citation and their name will be inscribed on the permanent plaque on display in the Missouri Dairy Hall of Honors.

7. Nominee may be a living or deceased member.

Nominations are for the following awards: Dairy cattle breeder: How does the living and active nominee stand out among his/her peers as an outstanding breeder of dairy cattle? Dairy leader: What leadership positions has this person held and what accomplishments have been made that contribute to the welfare of the Missouri dairy industry?

Pioneer dairy leader (a deceased person): What leadership positions did the person hold and how did the person contribute to the welfare of the Missouri dairy industry?

Meritorious service: What kind of service did the nominee provide to the Missouri dairy industry and how did this service aid the industry?

2018 Missouri Holstein Futurity Show - August 17, Sedalia, MO

The 3-Year-Old Futurity will be held in conjunction with the Missouri State Fair Open Show, Friday, August 17.

The Futurity is a program where year old calves are entered and compete when the animal reaches 3-Years to win a portion of the entry money. This is a fun and enjoyable show where adults and juniors both compete.

District Shows Remaining Northeast District: June, Columbia West Central District: July 11, Pleasant Hill South Central District: July 28, Ava Southwest District: August 17, MO State Fair

Membership Dues - CHANGES IN DUE DATES! Bylaw changes to membership approved at state convention: 1. March 15 - Initial due date. Following this date unpaid members will be removed from Holstein USA rolls, increasing registration fees.

2. Mid-States News subscription is an added $5.

3. April 15 - A late fee of $10 will be added to every adult member.

4. June 1 - Members paid after this date are not eligible for association awards.

YDLI Class 11 - Applications Due August 1.

The Young Dairy Leaders Institute is a nationally recognized three-phase leader and communication skills development program for young adults (ages 22-45) working in the dairy industry, with all breeds of cattle.

Each participant develops top-tier skills and the personal network needed to succeed in today’s dairy business. YDLI is a nationally recognized three-phase leadership and communication skills development program for young adults working in the dairy industry. YDLI’s three-phase approach ensures participants develop necessary leadership skills, apply those skills in real-life scenarios, and then focus on the benefits of influential leadership.

YDLI has over 600 alumni that can attest to its merit. Through interactive training sessions and working closely with industry experts and dynamic leaders, YDLI participants: • Are prepared to take leadership roles in dairy organizations and their communities.

• Become effective spokespeople and advocates for the dairy industry with consumers and media.

• Understand current social, political, scientific, organizational and economic issues facing the industry, and how to affect change.

• Develop interpersonal relationship and communication skills, and have the opportunity to network with like-minded, enthusiastic young people from across the country.

YDLI 11 will have their on-site meetings in Phoenix, Ariz. Phase I will meet February 6-9, 2019, and Phase III will take place February 5-8, 2020.

Junior News

4-H Dairy Judging Camp - July 18-20, Springfield, MO

Ages 10-18 Enrollment Deadline: July 6, 2018. Participants will be guided through the basics and finer points of judging dairy cattle, with

particular emphasis placed on oral reasons. Youth will work in small groups receiving individual assistance. The camp is open to all youth ages 10-18 interested in learning more about dairy judging. Camp will be filled on a first come, first serve basis, with a max of 20.

State Dairy Judging Contest: August 19, MO State Fair

Juniors interested in competing on the state 4-H dairy judging team on the national level need to participate in the state Judging Contest held at the MO State Fair on Saturday morning August 19. Cash awards, ribbons and plaques are given as prizes. Ages 8 - 21 are split into Junior, Intermediate and Senior.

The YDJM recognition is designed to reward youth, ages 9 to 16, who demonstrate a firsthand working knowledge of the dairy industry. Applicants must participate in Registered HolsteinÂŽ, dairy and other activities, be role models for other youth and good spokespeople for the dairy industry. The finalists are recognized at the National Convention in MI. The 2018 Young Distinguished Junior Members Finalists are:

MO 4-H Cow Camp 2018 - A new location!

Cow camp moved to Lawrence Cty Fairgrounds and Wrightvale provided the calves. We had a lot of room, electricity, water and shade. Everyone was really pleased with this years camp. 32 campers came from several states came to learn about dairy cattle! Lots of volunteers made for a great camp. Make plans to attend next year!
