The Bombay Development Department (BDD) was set up in 1920 by the then Governor of the province, Sir George Lloyd who was appointed by the British Government of India. Lloyd believed that the housing problem contributed to the political unrest in the city.

He designed a massive scheme for housing and development for the workers of the mills in the city.

All the BDD chawl structures are located in the heart of the island city of Mumbai and are almost 80 years old. masterplan adaptive spaces visions External infrastructure provided to the buildings, such as, water supply, sewage and storm water drainage has deteriorated and is in need of replacement.

The overall condition of BDD chawl buildings is deteriorating and they may not sustain very long under the present condition.

For these reasons the area has been the object of a design competition, finalized to the demolition of the existing buildings and the construction of a high­density multifunctional district.

RESEARCH TRIP

From 8th to 18th of april 2016 we went to Mumbai to visit BDD Chawls.

We mapped the existing situation of the physical space and we talked with citizens in order to know their opinion about the future redevelopment of the area.

We realized a Survey in the community to understand how people live and which are their expectations for their new neighborhood.

Implementing technology in helping people experience was2016, a important stage On Sunday the 12thspace of June BDD Chawls in process of this project. The augmented neighbours visualized the proposal through reality and virtual reality tools were used for Augmented andrealize Virtualthe Reality tools. making people effects that will occur because of the decisions they take, on neighborhood. This was done creating multiple variations of building composition, which people could play with.
