it happens, we have a fighting chance to make visual contact with the vireo and other species that come back in early May. However, as the month progresses and the tree canopy becomes thick with foliage, it gets more difficult to see the birds. We often need to be content to only hear and recognize their vocalizations. For those of us who don’t spend most of our time in the woods, a few of the birds that typically arrive in the Mohawk Valley during the first week of May will come to bird feeders. Among those are the Indigo Bunting (average arrival date: May 6th), Rose-breasted Grosbeak (May 1st), and Ruby-throated Hummingbird (May 4th).
