This report presents a comprehensive analysis of the creation and consumption of memes in Iran. Memes have become a prominent, and extremely powerful form of cultural expression and communication especially among the Millennial and the GenZ. This study combines statistical data with qualitative insights to provide a holistic understanding of how memes entered the Iranian digital sphere and how they evolved, how they could be categorized, and who are the audience of these memes.

With the increasing popularity of memes online, the effects are becoming apparent in the behavior and perception of the public in their daily lives. Such effects were recently investigated by the Wall Street Journal in an article called Marketers Turn to Meme Accounts for Humor, News and Group Therapy and BBC’s article entitled The Surprising Power of Internet Memes, in which the influence of memes is defined beyond youth’s daily lives, but also its influence on social, political, and cultural views.

Marketing and Advertising/ Economy Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Sony, and many other big companies seeing this trend among the Millennials and GenZ used them to advertise their products or take jabs at their competitors. This work yet denying their role in creating these memes.

The rise of memes and it’s coinsision with crypto currencies created a whole new category of digital finance named Meme Coins. The power of the Meme trading was felt by Wall Street famously during the “GameStop Short Squeeze”. Read more on Forbes.

All showing the importance of Memes as powerful means of communication.

Popular culture In the realm of celebrities, memes have become highly popular and influential. Celebrities like Ana de Armas and Ryan Gosling have garnered significant attention. These memes have, in turn, boosted the visibility of their movies. For instance, memes related to "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" have driven higher views and sales for these films. Similarly, memes surrounding the shulvenist concept of "Sigma" have reignited interest in the film "American Psycho (2000)," leading to increased viewership more than two decades after it’s release.

Overall, memes continue to shape public perception and engagement in the world of celebrity and entertainment.

In order to understand the context of memes in Iran we’d have to look at evolution of modern humor in Iran. The firsts sparks appeared about a century ago, when we come across the entry of satirical magazines of that time such as "Tulu’e-Mossavar" and "Molla- Nasreddin" were building the infrastructure for the entry of a new form of humor.

After nearly a century, the pseudo-memes of humor magazines of that period do not have the slightest resemblance to today's memes, but one cannot ignore their entry and influence in the history of Iranian humor.

Decades later, after the Islamic revolution and the resumption of satirical magazines, after ups and downs in the late 1990s, a great revolution occurred with the arrival of mobile phones in Iran and their spread in of digital jokes. The first text message in Iran that was sent in early 2000s.

Soon by mid 2000s a new genre in Iranian text jokes appeared, with many Iranians constantly sending each other jokes via SMS.

But this was not the only important change in development of memes in that decade. Appearance of mobile phones with Bluetooth capability I believe was the basis of Iranian Memes today. At that time, with the spread sharing of videos via Bluetooth between mobile phones became a “thing to do” and a pastime, which led to the production of many legendary and memorable Persian memes that are sometimes still used, from Agha Reza not waking up to “Maryam”, the man who fell on his back trying some acrobatic moves.

A few years later, with the spread of the Internet and Persian internet memes, Facebook and blogs continued their rule and simultaneously made great progress in Iran and the world of meme industry. Among the most important events of the Facebook era, we can mention the entry of Rage Comic and Trollfaces and their translations from foreign sources. “Pedare bozorgvar” and “Qoromsaq” can be considered the most memorable characters of that period in Persian internet memes.

Even then, a limited number of people called it a “meme”, and only those who followed memes from English sources knew its real name. Nevertheless, this period cannot be considered the most influential period of Persian memes.

After approaching the end of the famous era of Facebook in Iran, a big wave of gradual migration of Iranian users started towards Instagram, meanwhile, after the problems and restrictions imposed on Viber and Line, the attention of Iranian users was drawn to Telegram. Activity of Iranian meme pages On Instagram, like Facebook, and sometimes the exact same pages, including Persian trolls, provided the same content.

In 2017, at the same time as there were speculations about Telegram filtering, Persian-speaking YouTubers, by reactivating their activities on Persian YouTube, led to the familiarization of many people with Persian memes. After two years, at the same time as the pandemic lock downs, due to the increase in the time spent using mobile phones and other devices, suddenly the public's acceptance of memes increased and we witnessed a significant progress in people's knowledge and understanding of memes, which until today, after 3 years, the audience of Persian memes is increasing day by day.

In this study we have only analyzed memes public pages on Instagram.

Although, the team is very aware of Telegram being a source of meme creation and distribution among iranians, an objective statistical study could not have been conducted due to the inherently closed, nature of the platform.

Our first step was to conduct a search on Instagram and list every page with over 1K followers that produced, or distributed Iranian memes as the primary purpose of their pages. Listed, were more than 130 pages. The consensus is that this list while not exhaustive, gives a representative sample of meme creation and consumption of Iranian memes.

We reviewed sample pages on the list and discussed about how their content could be categorized. This was when the major categories started to form.

After finalizing the categories, we split the list of pages and categorized them based on their content, each page could be listed for more than one category.

Influence of each category was estimated by adding the number of followers of pages within the same category, since reach data was not publicly available for each page.

For gender and age groupings of audience among each category, we requested pages listed under that category to give us their Instagram generated data for “Reach”. Many responded, and the results you see for each category is an average of data given by pages of that category weighted per their number of followers.
