“You say to a brick, ‘What do you want, brick?’ And brick says to you, ‘I like an arch.’ And you say to brick, ‘Look, I want one, too, but arches are expensive and I can use a concrete lintel.’ And then you say: ‘What do you think of that, brick?’ Brick says: ‘I like an arch.’ “ Louis Kahn SZ Residence is an experimental project which tries to answer the questions related to the arches, vaults and domes. It tries to figure out how these elements could be applicable in this century. The aim of this project is also not to copy the ancestors’ trials and experiments, but to follow in their footsteps and go into the next chapter using their methods. It is about understanding their methods and absorbing the current reality, where the project takes place. Theoretically, the methods could be easily applied, but the design must be sufficient to satisfy the needs of the present and the future not the past.

Egyptians, nowadays, have a lot of problems, and they are not the same as they were in the past, they all need to have a common inspired project to work together towards a new Phase. In this project, the aim is to transfer new Cairo into an environmental educational society... This miniature piece of area could be the 1st environmental educational society in Egypt, meaning, it could also be the first fallen brick from the wall of backwardness and unawareness.

The main Concept and Challenge in this Project was "How to introduce the world of fashion within the era of capitalism?" Should we separate the design process apart from the management? In this project, the clash between the fashion design creative process and the market demand (sometimes its unbearable authority) was neglected, the design approach tried to build a "bridge" of trust between the creative part and the commercial Tycoons. The project represents and imagines a new world where both (the fashion design creative process and the market demand) can work for humanity's benefit not only for their EGO and PROFIT. The previous concept is reflected on merging with detaching both sides, the fashion design creative process and the market demand. The meeting point was designed to be the CATWALK, where the designers' dreams become the businessmen’s money...

Insomaniac's Dream Catcher

La JetĂŠe - Chris Marker 1962

Insomniac's Dreamcatcher Something to REM-emeber

Waking up in the dark, trying to REM-ember where you were? Trying to REM-ember whether you were sleeping or living another secret life. Are you just a sleeping beauty or are you Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde?! Where is the reality? What are you trying to REM-ember!!? To dream is to live another parallel reality that you are not aware of until you are awake. But who could say surely that one is fully awake? Maybe we are all still dreaming in another parallel reality! Dreaming is another manifestation of reality, you can't be exposed to two (three, four...or even more in some cases) realities except when in the medium between them. This medium is the stage between REM-embering (the dreams are taking place in the REM period) and remembering (the other reality is the case of remembering the every day's incidents that creates the intellectual cognitive) What if you are an insomniac? And you don't have the luxury of REM-embering? The REM state is the mechanism that connects us with reality; it is constantly running in the background, searching for the codes at lightning speed to metaphorically match to whatever is meaningful in the environment, and thus creating our perception of reality. It is a reality generator, accessing the templates that are the basis of meaning. (This is easily seen when people access memories that evoke strong emotions: rapid eye movements occur even when their eyes are open. We have much evidence of this on film.) It is active when we dream but also when we daydream. It is seen when people go into focused states of attention (trance) and when strong instincts are aroused. It is associated with hallucinations and hearing voices. Why do we dream?- The expectation fulfillment theory of dreaming. The design approach is to make an architectural intervention for these insomniacs, which collects dreams from sleepers who volunteer to share their dreams, to the main mind/heart of the intervention (virtual memory). The mind/heart feeds back the insomniacs with the collective dreams, to help them REM-embering some real memories.

The nest was morphed to contain the body as the brain/soul is always being re/morphed to simulate the reality.

The sphere is a sufficient start for the non-morphed to take the most suitable shape according to the circumstances.

During the morphological process the nest and the affected object are always merging and regenerating new possibilities.

The final attempt is a ne according to all the tran happened to both the n pre-morphed seed.

The merging of many seeds should generate a whole crucible that would contain all the sleepers’ dreams. The dreams refed back into the insomniac’s’ brain to create an unusual reality. Every seed/cell would contain one body -the sleeper body- and each cell has a recording device that can transfer the its own reality into electronical/magnetic waves, the unseen waves are a manifestation of the other side’s reality into ou Those waves would be added into the insomniac’s brains as mentioned above. Their brains should re-create another new reality that we have not been able to reach till now, where the reality should renewable. These new interpretations of reality would be reused to generate new forms/meanings of Architecture.

The target of the project is to define new function/s to be added to the park/activities. Egypt is one of the developed countries that needs many driven forces to grasp it from its current state into the next era. The design approach is to merge the green spaces (which Egypt, especially Cairo, is suffering from its lackness) with the science and its manifestation; Technology. The main function is to develop the first Egyptian National Aeronautics and Space Administration, to be the first Middle Eastern hub for spaces sciences. Not only labs and research offices would be in the projects’ program, it will also contain a museum and interactive simulations for adults and kids as well. A huge part of the project revolves around Nano technology; it created a new branch of science which is a little bit new and unknown for the Egyptian’s Science Community. All these activities take place within the park/ public spaces, as one of the projects’ aims is to encourage Egyptians to interact and live within the research/science community. The program was distributed in zones according to the site attributes and analysis.

The womb (Maha Maya); The Bodhi tree’s roots are protected by the Maha Maya, who is the Gautama Buddha’s’ mother, the name represents the “wombing”. People move from the main entrance, which is within the plaza, to this sacred space, and then they rotate around the cone (a womb) within the space itself (which reflects another layer of wombness). Around the cone, people transcend the stairs until they arrive at the grand presence of the holy Bodhi.

The cremation; Starting with the Sui space, the space is protected with the water from the four corners against the evil spirits. With a centered transcendent staircase, Sui is the main atrium of the cremation stage. The cremation will take place in the skin of the floors as the crematoriums are buried in the walls and will be witnessed through panoramic glass windows by the deceased’s family members and friends.
