Whilethewordkanthahasnocertainetymologicalroot,itisbelievedtobederivedfromthe Sanskritwordkontha,meaningrags.Inmodernusage,kanthamoregenerallyrefers specifcallytothetypeofstitchused.Theearliestandmostbasickanthastitchisasimple, straightandrunningstitch.InWestBengal,India,artisansfocusonaspecialisedformof geometricpatternedkantha,calledPartola.¹
