ISLA DE PASCUA EASTER ISLAND Isla de origen volcánico que se eleva a 3.000 metros sobre el fondo oceánico. Su superficie basal tiene forma de trapecio y es 50 veces su área emergida. En cada vértice, producto de erupciones volcánicas, se localiza un volcán principal: el Poike al este (3 millones de años), el Rano Kau en el sur (2 millones de años) y el Maunga Terevaka en el norte (200.000 años). Además existen cerca de 104 centros eruptivos en forma de cráteres, conos y domos.

An island of volcanic origin, which rises 3.000 meters above the floor of the sea. Its base is in the form of a trapezoid and covers an area 50 times as large as the area above the surface of the water. In each corner, as a result of volcanic eruptions, there is a major volcano, Poike to the north-east (3 million years old), Rano Kau in the south (2 million years old), and Terevaka in the north-west (200.000 years old). There are also another 104 eruptive centers in the form of craters, cones and domes.

En la madrugada del 12 de octubre de 1914
el S.M.S Dresden avistó la Isla de Pascua. Con todos los hombres en sus puestos de combate ,el crucero comenzó su aproximación previendo un encuentro con escuadrones ingleses o con unidades japonesas. Al comprobar que el sitio estaba libre de naves enemigas, telegrafió a la escuadra que le seguía, la que anunció su presencia con sus columnas de humo al despuntar el dia. Los cruceros y los auxiliares fondearon al oeste de la isla, frente al poblado de Hanga Roa, ante la sorpresa de sus habitantes que sólo recibían la visita del buque-escuela chileno Baquedano dos veces al año. La habitaban poco más de 200 nativos, tres europeos y los miembros de la expedición del matrimonio británico Routledge, dedicado a los estudios de los moais. La isla estaba arrendada en esos tiempos a la firma Williamson & Balfour de Valparaíso. Su administrador inglés Henry Percival Edmunds abordó el S.M.S. Scharnhorst y el vicealmirante Graf von Spee y sus oficiales comprobaron que Edmunds desconocía la existencia de la guerra entre Alemania y Gran Bretaña. Sin informarle, aprovecharon negociar la compra de 150 novillos y corderos. Mientras tanto, numerosas embarcaciones de nativos se acercaron a los buques ofreciendo aves, huevos y frutas. El dia transcurrió entre las maniobras de carboneo y la visita de una comisión de oficiales a tierra, culminando con un incidente que alarmó al personal de los cuatro cruceros: cuatro fuegos aparecieron sobre la isla. In the early morning of October 12, 1914, the S.M.S Dresden spotted Easter Island. With all the crew at combat positions, the cruiser began its approach, fearing an encounter with an English squadron or some Japanese units. Once assured that the area was free of enemy ships, the Dresden telegraphed the squadron which was following, which announced it presence by columns of smoke at the break of day. The cruisers and their auxiliary ships anchored on the western side of the island, in front of the village of Hanga Roa, much to the surprise of the locals who were accustomed only to the visit by the Chilean training ship Baquedano twice a year. The inhabitants of the Island were only a little more than 200 natives, 3 Europeans and the members of the British archaeological expedition led by the Routledges, who were here to study the statues. At that time, the island was leased to the Williamson & Balfour Company of Valparaíso. When the English administrator, Henry Percival Edmunds, went aboard the S.M.S. Scharnhorst, Vice-Admiral Graf von Spee and his officers were able to determine that Edmunds was unaware of the war that was being fought between Germany and Great Britain in Europe. Without telling him about it, they negotiated the purchase of 150 steers and lambs. In the meanwhile, many native canoes approached the ships to offer chickens, eggs and fruit. The day passed with coaling exercises and a visit by a group of officers to the shore, culminating in an incident which alarmed

Según la tradición oral, cuando muere Hotu Matua, el mítico primer rey de Te Pito O Te Henua, hicieron una angarilla, colocaron sobre ella el cadáver de su padre y lo llevaron a Akahanga. Ahí excavaron una profunda fosa y lo sepultaron, estando el hijo mayor – Tu´u Maheke - a la cabeza del cadáver y los otros tres a los pies (Englert, 1948). La región de Akahanga ubicada en la sección central de la costa sureste es una de las más importantes. Abarca una extensión de 493 hectáreas con la mayor densidad arqueológica de Rapa Nui .En los bordes de la pequeña bahía encontramos dos centros ceremoniales, el
According to folklore, when Hotu Matua, the mythical first king of Te Pito O Te Henua, died, his sons made a litter, placed their father’s body upon it and took him to Akahanga. There they dug a deep grave and buried him, with the oldest son –Tu´u Maheke– standing by the head of the body and the other three sons at his feet. (Englert, 1948). The area of Akahanga in the central part of the southeastern coast is one of the most important sectors of the Island. It covers 493 hectares with the greatest archaeological density on Rapa Nui. Along the edge of the tiny bay, we find two ceremonial centers, the Ahu

En el extremo este se pueden visualizar pequeñas y bajas plataformas con fragmentos de moai de no más de 1,5 metros de altura y en el extremo oeste tenemos una compleja y monumental estructura con gigantescas
Akahanga, which gives its name to the area, with 24 overthrown and destroyed Moais and the Ahu Ura Uranga Te Mahina with another 10 or 12 Moais. Both clearly show several platforms placed one on top of the other, offering evidence of a persistent religious ceremonial activity over, at least, four centuries among the tribes that inhabited the sector (Ngaure and Marama). Facing the Ahu Akahanga are the remains of a village with its Hare Paenga, or boat-shaped houses, associated with Umu Pae, or fire pits. The ethnographic notes indicate that these houses were occupied by an elite group of high ranking persons from each territory, representing the socio-political power on the Island and related to the ceremonial activities held in the square in front of the Ahu and the Moai. Within the ruined monument there is clear evidence of at least four constructions, each built over the previous one, moving from east to west. On the eastern end, small, low platforms with fragments of statues no more than 1.5 meters high can be found, while on the western extreme, we have a complex monumental

On the central platform, we find rectangular blocks of red scoria rock and part of a frieze placed over the enormous stone blocks of the front wall. The base level of this center dates from the 14th Century, although the peak of its importance as a sacred center was reached in the 17th Century. The progressive destruction of these ceremonial centers is attributed to permanent intertribal conflicts probably caused by over-population and the consequent lack of resources. Un continente Perdido A Lost Continent
Según una leyenda transmitida por A´ure Auviri Porotu, Tea Waka y Ku´u Ku´u, uno de los siete emisarios enviados por Hotu Matu´a en busca de una isla habitable, se encontraban en Ko te Tomonga o Tea Waka (“lugar donde arribó Tea Waka”) cuando arriba el rey Hotu Matu´a con los suyos. Tea Waka le relata esta historia: “La tierra de Te Pito O Te Henua era una tierra mucho más vasta llamada Kainga Nui Nui, pero a causa de las faltas cometidas por sus habitantes, el dios Uoke o Uwoke hizo temblar la tierra, quebrándo su palanca en la colina Puku Puhipuhi. Se levantaron grandes olas, subió el mar y la tierra se achicó, llamándose desde ese momento Te Pito o te Henua, el Ombligo de la Tierra.” Hotu Mau´a le replica: “ amigo, no fue la palanca de Uoke., fue el rayo del dios Make Make.” Otra leyenda hawaiana nos relata la historia de Ka Houpo o Kane ( el tejido solar del Dios Tane ), un continente en el Océano Pacífico, que encerraba todas las islas polinésicas desde Hawai en el norte hasta Nueva Zelanda en el sur. En el oeste llegaba hasta el archipiélago de Fidji. Un diluvio llamado Kai a Ka Hune Alii cubrió todo el continente quedando visible solo puntas de las antiguas colinas, hoy llamadas islas de la Polinesia. Solo unos pocos se salvaron de una muerte segura (Krendeljow, Kondratow, 1980). Uno de ellos puede haber sido el mítico Rey Hotu Matua, quién venía con los suyos, escapando desde Hiva, isla que se hundía lentamente en el mar. En otra leyenda rapanui se relata que Hotu Matua solía mirar desde el volcán Rano Kau hacia el sur en dirección de su tierra ancestral Hiva. ¿ Habrá existido antiguamente un continente en el Océano Pacífico? Los científicos lo niegan.
According to legend transmitted from A´ure Auviri Porotu, Tea Waka and Ku´u Ku´u, one of the seven scouts sent by Hotu Matu´a to search for an inhabitable island was at Ko te Tomonga o Tea Waka (“place where Tea Waka arrived”) when the king and his people arrived. Tea Waka told them the following story: “The land of Te Pito O Te Henua was once much larger and wider, called Kainga Nui Nui, but due to the sins committed by the inhabitants, the god Uoke (or Uwoke) caused the earth to shake breaking his long handled cane on the hill of Puku Puhipuhi. Great waves arose, the sea came up and the land grew smaller, being called from that time forward Te Pito o te Henua, the Navel of the World.” Hotu Mau´a responded: “ Friend, that was not the long handled cane of Uoke; it was the lightning bolt of the god Make Make.” A Hawaiian legend tells the story of Ka Houpo o Kane (the solar loom of the god Tane), a continent in the Pacific Ocean which included all the Polynesian islands from Hawai’i in the north to New Zealand in the south. To the west it reached the archipelago of Fiji. A flood known as Kai a Ka Hune Alii covered the entire continent with only the tops of the ancient hills still visible, which are today the islands of Polynesia. Only a few people were saved from certain death. (Krendeljow, Kondratow, 1980). One of those may have been the mythical king Hotu Matu’a, who came with his people escaping from Hiva, an island which was slowly sinking into the ocean. In another legend of Rapa Nui, it is noted that Hotu Matu’a used to stare from the edge of the Rano Kau volcano towards the south in the direction of his native land Hiva. Might there once have existed a continent in the Pacific Ocean? Scientists say no.
o g n a T Insólito es para muchos enterarse que en Rapa Nui existe una versión adaptada del tango rioplatense. Su introducción en Isla de Pascua se produce en 1930, cuando tripulantes de embarcaciones procedentes de Chile portaron novedosas vitrolas a cuerda y discos de acetato, con un ritmo que por entonces invadía los grandes salones. Su rica y compleja coreografía ha sido adaptada a la música pascuense, manteniendo solo algunos pasos básicos en el mismo compás de 4/4. Hoy se puede apreciar en la fiesta cultural Tapati , en que parejas mayores participan, mostrando el llamado “ Tango Pascuense”. Un recuerdo curioso que se perderá en el tiempo, ya que los jóvenes pascuenses ya no lo practican.
Nui in Rapa
It seems amazing to many to find out that on Rapa Nui there is an adapted version of the Argentine tango. It was introduced to Easter Island in 1930, when ships crews from Chile brought in the new hand-cranked victrolas and their acetate recordings of the music that was invading the large dance halls on the continent. The rich and complex choreography of the dance was adapted to the native music, retaining only a few basic steps in the same 4/4 beat. Today this dance can be seen at the Island festival, Tapati, where older couples demonstrate the “Tango Pascuense” – a strange memory which is being lost to time as the young people no longer dance it.
