The Narrative of Objects
"This collection represents the best of the techniques of the region, so they are genuinely embedded in culture & tradition while maintaining a strong contemporary quality. That is why we felt it was so important & relevant to show the process of manufacturing them, which is so rich in different materials & mediums.”

All visual material and pictures are the property of Allpa Sac. “The human factor of manufacturing very much drives the production studio we worked with for this collection. They work towards recovering & placing intrinsic value behind all the products.”
– Delphine Lejeune, Collection Designer + Visual Researcher
-Diego Lopez
– Diego Lopez, Collection Designer + Head of Product at Monocle “Through time & tradition, it has been about the circular economy before the concept of circular economy was born. Everything part of this collection came from Chulucanas. The mango leaves used in the design process came from local fields & the clay itself came from the river. From the materials to the finished products, they all have a very spiritual weight.”
“The social & cultural impact design can generate in countries such as Peru. I could see how significant the studio’s positive impact was making in the different craft communities.”
– Diego Lopez “I would love to see a world where artisans are more recognized. Both Delphine & I appreciate & feel very strongly about the possibility of empower ing local artisans & makers. The studio has worked hard to get all the systems in place to make every thing Fair Trade & sustainable. They understand the power of design & how that can positively influence the local & artisanal communities.”

The collection was developed on-site with them—ev ery shape we made alongside those artists & some other small crafters that work around the area. It was a collection born from -collaboration.”DelphineLejeune
“These vessels are really the middle point between tradition & culture, very much rooted in the definitive shapes & forms of Chulucanas. Delphine & I held conversations & dialogues with several local artists & designers about their memories & what shapes they saw when they were growing up - the kinds of things that were lost a little when the inflow of Ameri can or European designers came into Chulucanas.

“Black is my favorite color, which is why many of the vessels are black. There is so much power in it & with the designs. The blackness also forces you to look at the story - the fact that the coloring came from the creative process, I just love it.”
-Diego Lopez

“The Chulu vessel has an interesting story behind it. I went outside the workshop & began gathering leaves & grasses, tying them up into a small brush. Then I, alongside a local artist, began to brush stroke the vessel with liquid clay & we placed it into the kiln smoke. You could see how the liquid clay had hardened when it came out, which would be the white areas. Then we set the mango leaves on it, which create the blackness. Once the final firing was done, we saw we had created this fantastic effect of positive & negative.”

Hand-sculpted & tactile, the forms have a simplistic artisanal appeal, while the ancient forms showcase sculptural shapes that show traces of tool-work & carved detailing with a chunky, seemingly unrefined aesthetic. We worked with artisans in the Ra jasthan area who have a long tradition in this material & craft.”
