A Message from Leadership Together We are Stronger

Dear Community Friends,

The Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) is once again bustling with kinetic energy from visiting members, families and field trips. The Great Gravity Clock is rolling, the giant Megalodon is keeping watch over learners at play, and our otters are joyfully splashing as ambassadors for Florida wildlife. We are filled with gratitude.

Having recently completed our 2020-2025 Strategic Plan, we entered 2020 with big ideas for this pivotal year. Absent from our outlook was a global pandemic. Just three months into the year, our signature events were canceled, our doors were closed, and just like all of you, we were faced with unfathomable uncertainty.

We acted quickly, making difficult choices and operating lean in budget and staff to sustain our beloved Museum. We learned the importance of flexibility, agility and efficiency, utilizing every resource available to us while continuing to support the community. We leaned into the ultimate test, defining what it meant to connect people - all people - to inspiring science without the benefit of our physical space and in-person operation. We remained steadfast in our mission, and our pivot to virtual was nearly instant.

As the inspiration for future engineers, aviation specialists, biologists, inventors, ecologists and computer scientists, we braved the ‘new world’ with curiosity, innovation and problem solving. Through impactful virtual and on-site offerings, we connected with families and learners, wherever they were. Let us highlight just a few examples of recent initiatives that were launched at MODS:

• Our team created more than 250 STEM videos shared across social platforms.

• We launched our “MODS Comes to You” outreach programs, as our STEMobile hit the road, reaching more than 50,000 learners.

• Our partnership with Broward County Public Schools bolstered STEM learning during the pandemic through the creation of the MODS Challenge for learners K-12.

5 | MUSEUM OF DISCOVERY AND SCIENCE

• We opened groundbreaking new exhibits at the Museum, including our Sprouting STEM Early Childhood Learning Lab powered by PNC Grow Up Great® for our youngest scientists and The Leighton Family Hangar aviation-themed Makerspace for makers of all ages.

• Our signature multi-award-winning video HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention series, Wise Bodies, presented by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, garnered more than 500,000 views globally.

• We helped inform and prepare our community and beyond for storm season with Eye of the Storm, sponsored by the Florida Department of Emergency Management and in partnership with the International Hurricane Research Center at Florida International University. The videos reached more than 1 million online views in 2020, and the event achieved record-breaking on-site attendance in 2021.

MODS has emerged from the pandemic stronger, more resilient and more determined than ever. Just like our young visitors, we are building the future. Our 2020-2025 Strategic Plan sets the foundation for the exciting pathways ahead. This defining declaration shares our core values of discovery, inclusivity, collaboration, creativity, education and excellence. Each value is essential in creating opportunities and fostering inclusion.

It has been our honor and responsibility to keep our community connected to science virtually and in-person.

To inspiring science infinite discovery and enduring impact,

BIG Science for Little Sprouts

Grow with us at MODS.

At the Museum of Discovery and Science, we are curiosity cultivators for future scientists and engineers! Early childhood at MODS is driven by one guiding principle: children are born curious. Our mission here at MODS, connecting people to inspiring science, supports that curiosity. We evoke moments of wonder. We inspire a passion for exploration. We transform curiosity into scientific inquiry. We ignite the insatiable need to learn more because that’s where true discovery lives.

MODS has developed something BIG for our community’s littlest scientists ages 0–6, and visitors can expect a sensory rich play environment that will enhance the connection between children and caregivers. We are pushing the boundaries of toddler creativity and exploring projects that are not easily replicated at home around the kitchen table. The brand new Sprouting STEM Learning Lab is an immersive, exploratory and interactive early childhood space where asking questions and trying new things are applauded. MODS delivers a STEM-focused program with activities and live animal encounters facilitated by the Museum’s expert early childhood educators. Through Sprouting STEM, MODS infuses a passion for science in little learners.

The space features an inviting, oversized and fantastical version of a lush, nature-filled Florida backyard complete with native plants and wildlife. This is an innovative, safe place for learning and was strategically designed to inspire imaginations.

23 | MUSEUM OF DISCOVERY AND SCIENCE

There is an exciting and powerful link between STEM and early childhood learning. We know from research that foundational science literacy is linked to essential skills development in young children, including the ability to read and write. STEM exposure in early childhood helps kids learn how to predict, understand cause and effect, comprehend sequence and build a rich vocabulary. It’s also incredibly fun and messy!

Our Sprouting STEM Learning Lab is powered by PNC Grow Up Great ®. Since 2004, the PNC Grow Up Great program has been helping children from birth through age 5 develop a passion for learning that lasts a lifetime. The Sprouting STEM classroom will be MODS’ early childhood headquarters for our onsite programming, and it also is designed to support mobile outreach and professional development for educators. The Museum’s commitment to early childhood outreach is a deeply-rooted pillar in our heritage, and MODS believes every young child should have equal access to high-quality science learning.

We are prototyping a new aspirational space to complement the Sprouting STEM Learning Lab. Explorers can look forward to The Discovery Spot, currently The Discovery Center. The brand new exhibit for young learners will feature sections such as Everglades, Ocean to Air and a re-envisioned Citrus Grove.

MODS’ programming has continued to empower children from preschool to career for more than four decades. Join us as we evolve, create and invent for the next 40 years.

Take the MODS Challenge

2020 was the Summer of STEAM!

Learners across the district used their critical thinking skills and creativity to tackle an array of unique FREE STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) learning activities all summer long.

MODS developed eight weeks of fun, innovative and STEAM project-based learning units with multiple science activities students completed at home and shared on social media (with parent permission). The slate of activities that comprised the MODS Challenge was part of the District’s transition to distance learning due to the coronavirus pandemic and aimed to engage students with hands-on learning opportunities. The MODS Challenge offered a STEAM curriculum aligned with core educational standards. Through the challenges, students also had access to some of the IMAX® films in MODS’ extensive library of documentaries.

“Through the MODS Challenges, we engaged students with unique learning opportunities to spark their imaginations and develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills – all while having fun. We appreciate the ongoing collaboration with the Museum of Discovery and Science in providing these challenges. It’s an example of the positive impact we can have on our students by working together through community partnerships.”

Youth in the Museum’s MODS Pods e-learning program bid George a bon voyage for his travels into the great outdoors.

The Museum’s newest sea turtle ambassador, Georgia (Gigi), hails from the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton. Georgia was hatched at the lab as part of an ongoing study, conducted by Dr. Jeanette Wyneken, on the ways that environmental factors affect the gender of turtle hatchlings. Strategic Plan: Pathways to the Future MUSEUM OF DISCOVERY AND SCIENCE

Strategic Plan 2020-2025

Inspiring the Future

In 1977 the community came together to create The Discovery Center – an interactive learning center that instilled a passion for science and discovery in a generation of children and their families. The Discovery Center was transformed into the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) in 1992, and since then we have created innovative exhibits, inspirational educational programs, and unique Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) experiences that continue to stimulate and excite our visitors.

In 2017, the Museum celebrated the completion of a $25 million capital campaign. This campaign was the result of the institution’s previous Strategic Plan, “Growth & Renewal,” that launched in 2003. The Plan produced many accomplishments including the Environmental Discovery Center expansion (2011) and the opening of the Science Park (2018). After 40 years of growth, MODS has arrived at a moment in which we need to look toward the future, examine our place in the community, and confirm our greater impact in Fort Lauderdale, south Florida, and the national community.

To make significant advances in how we approach the wonder of discovery and engage our various communities in the joy of science,

the Museum must think strategically about our programmatic initiatives, refining our business operations, and how we serve our community. Science is important— the act of “wondering, investigating, questioning, data collecting, and analyzing” helps us to make meaning of the world around us. People of all ages need to have positive experiences with science and develop critical thinking skills for them to fully participate in creating a better world for tomorrow. Science museums that promote hands-on discovery and free-choice learning are proven environments for engaging people with the joy of science.

The Museum’s staff and Board leadership spent 18 months developing the 2020 – 2025 Strategic Plan with extensive input from our community partners. The new mission and vision of the Museum must reflect the changing landscape not just of downtown Fort Lauderdale and south Florida but indeed the world around us. After considerable community-based research and discussions among the trustees and staff, we are pleased to present our strategic vision and goals for the next five years.

MODS Strategic Plan was adopted by the MODS Board of Trustees on October 23, 2019.

Our Mission

Connecting People to Inspiring Science

Our mission recognizes the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) as a place that brings our community together, creates engaging science experiences and highlights innovation.

Our Strategic Vision

The Museum of Discovery and Science will engage with people of all ages, abilities, backgrounds, cultures and family structures to develop a society that celebrates science and discovery and their impact on our lives now and into the future.

To achieve this, we will strengthen our core base of operations, expand our audience and sustain ongoing financial stability. We want to ensure that we continue building on our current level of success, remain relevant and responsive to our community and pave the way for the future of MODS. We have been here for 40 years, and through the next five years we will develop and galvanize our operations to best serve our community into the future.

STRATEGIC PLAN | 70

Our Values

Discovery

At the Museum of Discovery and Science, “Discovery” means learning science through a handson, inquiry-based and interactive process. We will provide innovative informal science experiences that inspire a passion for science and discovery and encourage lifelong learning. We introduce our visitors to innovations in science through exhibits, programs and films and ignite a passion to pursue STEM careers. We provide new, rewarding experiences that encourage visitors to contribute to our local workforce pipeline.

Our doors are open to everyone: individuals and families with physical and emotional disabilities and disparities in education, social and economic status. We embrace our truly diverse community of various ethnicities, religions, gender identification and sexual orientations. All are welcome here.

71 | MUSEUM OF DISCOVERY AND SCIENCE

Collaboration

The Museum believes that the strength of an institution is greatly enhanced by its ability to develop thoughtful partnerships with other organizations that align with our mission, vision and values. The Museum engages and learns from our visitors, local communities, educators, families, children and the broader scientific community. MODS embraces public and private partnerships ranging from our local, state and federal agencies to educational and cultural institutions, as well as social services agencies.

Creativity

MODS is a place where creativity is celebrated and where boundaries are pushed. It is a place where inspiration takes flight. We encourage and grow the human desire to explore, to question and to learn. Our experiences and environments allow us to connect with our visitors and our field in innovative ways. We embrace change and thrive in the opportunity to grow.

Educational Excellence

The Museum believes in providing high quality programs, exhibits and films. This allows us to become a force for science education and as such, those offerings are inspirational, innovative and imaginative. We strive to create a culture of visitor-centered excellence each and every day.

MODS fosters a warm, inviting and welcoming atmosphere for visitors and staff where visitor amenities and customer service are prioritized. We strive to create a culture of visitor-centered excellence each and every day.

STRATEGIC PLAN | 72
73 | MUSEUM OF DISCOVERY AND SCIENCE

Community Research & Findings

The development of the Strategic Plan 2020 - 2025 Pathways to the Future began with our Board of Trustees approving the commencement of the planning process at the October 2018 Board meeting. Guided by the Strategic Planning Committee, this year-long effort studied the success of past plans and embraced the present and future needs of our community.

The process involved online surveys (with more than 1,200 participants) and a series of listening sessions/focus groups that involved more than 120 participants. Additionally interviews were held with key community stakeholders.

While the majority of our visitors expressed they felt the Museum was engaging, educational and relevant and our programs are integral to the local educational ecosystem, we also recognize the community’s desire for us to constantly evolve and stay current.

Regularly updated exhibits are important, both traveling exhibits and new permanent exhibits were identified as reasons for a return visit. There was a particular emphasis on the need to enrich the guest experience for our younger audiences both indoors and outside.

Our exhibits featuring our animal collection continue to be popular with our guests with opportunities to strengthen the programs related to those exhibits, both for regular visitors and school Participantsgroups.felt

amenities provided at the Museum were adequate but voiced concerns that the Museum must continue to strive toward offering the very best amenities to stay competitive with other attractions in our area.

As we plan ahead, we heard that the most critical subjects for the Museum to address over the next five years are technological innovation, healthy choices for the whole body, early childhood education and climate change and resiliency. Our visitors are as concerned about sustainability, both at the Museum and in our community, as they are about healthy living.

It is clear from our surveys that accessibility is important to our guests, and particularly to our members. We must work to successfully convey our wide range of accessibility programs to the community.

STRATEGIC PLAN | 74

Early Childhood

Connecting to the Museum’s legacy as The Discovery Center, early childhood education is a core focus area of our work. Early childhood experiences provide a pathway to MODS, to school and to life-long STEM learning for visitors from birth through age six, their caregivers and other family members. MODS activates south Florida’s key industries and unique ecosystems to expose our youngest scientists to the world around us, ultimately priming south Florida’s workforce pipeline.

The Museum is formalizing our vision for environmental sustainability, with a focus on cultivating climate citizenship and providing a platform for exploring the opportunities for solutions. The Hub for Resilience Education at MODS, in partnership with the Community Foundation of Broward, will come to life on the exhibit floor to address environmental issues relevant to our community and cultivate and showcase solutions that mitigate the impact of climate change by championing engagement, education and action for environmental sustainability and resiliency in Broward. MODS Education and Learning

Health & Wellness

Quality of life can be improved by making positive healthy living choices and caring for the body and mind. Health & Wellness experiences at MODS provide a hands-on understanding of human anatomy and physiology, promoting the health of the body, care of the mind and commitment to healthy living. Understanding how our bodies work is the key to understanding and caring for our health. The Museum is a resource for learning about the human body and life sciences so that our visitors are able to live a healthy lifestyle.

Physical Science

From seeing the inner machinations of the Great Gravity Clock and hands-on Makerspace activities to “don’t try this at home” demonstrations and shows, MODS makes learning accessible and drives the “why” and the “how.” Inspiration takes flight at the Museum, demonstrating the physical principles of how things work. MODS is the platform for nurturing imagination and encouraging the innovative, curious spirit. The Museum helps learners become problem-solvers here in south Florida who can be introduced to physical science careers throughout the duration of their PreK-12 learning experience.

A Glance into MODS’ Future

Opening Summer 2023!

First Steps in Science

Playful exploration of STEM experiences leads to lifelong learning for all families.

Diversity & Inclusion

The exhibition’s content and experiences will help advance the museum’s DEAI work, including through words, images, and examples of phenomena. Images of people used in graphics will reflect a diversity of genders, races and ethnicities, family structures, and abilities and disabilities. The exhibit look and feel and its colors, finishes, and furnishings will be welcoming and comforting to visitors with sensory processing disorders or autism spectrum disorder. Additionally, specific content will be locally, personally, and/or culturally relevant, as confirmed by visitor testing.

Appropriate Content

Exhibit content will be developmentally appropriate and reflect current research regarding early childhood learning and family engagement.

Because STEM learning in early childhood is multi-dimensional and inextricably linked to learning in other subjects, non-STEM content such as language-building, art exploration, etc. will be supported by interactives where there is a natural synergy for including those subjects.

Accessibility

The design of the space and the interactives will follow the principals of Universal Design.

The gallery design and ergonomics will empower all visitors to fully explore the exhibition. ADA requirements will be met to ensure visitors feel welcome and able to participate to the fullest.

Visitor-Center & Community-Focus

Exhibit will accommodate school groups and allow for comfortable visits for both groups and families

Design should strive for an infectious sense of fun and exploration, while providing an aesthetic that is attractive and welcoming to visitors of multiple ages and stages, including adult caregivers.
