Software in support of survival About six weeks ago, Plant Engineering published a short piece, “Swagelok shares its best practices for essential manufacturing operations.”

It turned out to be the magazine’s most-read article in 2020 so far.

The story covers a briefing Swagelok gave to more than 200 manufacturers about what steps it took to remain in operations throughout the current pandemic.

Besides being impressed by the foresight and execution evidenced by Swagelok when it came to dealing with the pandemic, what caught this editor’s attention was the company’s reliance on key print documents, including for self-assessments, close contact guidelines, good hygiene processes, cleaning protocols, return-to-work policies and hardship paid time-off policy. In other words, there was no software for dealing with a Coronavirus.

As you can imagine, it didn’t take long for the software industry to realize its mandate.

Accelerator available

In response to what it calls a massive spike in demand for solutions that can help the world get back to work, VANTIQ announced the Back-to-Work Accelerator: a product that enables software developers to rapidly build real-time applications for safeguarding workplaces against the spread of COVID-19. The accelerator is available now, enabling developers, the company says, to go from concept to large-scale deployments in a matter of weeks.

An interesting approach

Atollogy is a computer-vision company using technology to make operational excellence easy and accessible for companies of all shapes and sizes. It says computer vision is a great tool for monitoring social distancing in an era of COVID-19, for potential future pandemics and even the flu.

Atollogy’s newest feature supports social distancing for your workforce. A short video available on the company’s website demonstrates how a real-time dashboard can protect personal privacy while at the same time ensuring workers are adhering to established distancing guidelines you have established, keeping workers safe and manufacturing facilities running.

Besides these two innovative approaches to automating various aspects of dealing with the Coronavirus, the major enterprise software vendors, whether for enterprise resources planning (ERP) or enterprise asset management (EAM), are also putting a stake in the ground.

According to the website EHSInsight, environment, health and safety (EHS) refers to a series of laws, regulations and workplace procedures to protect the wellbeing of workers. It also refers to the application software modules within ERP systems used to track and manage compliance with those laws, regulations and workplace procedures. EHS modules will be the locus of application software vendors’ development efforts related to COVID-19.

EAM systems, as being concerned with plant facilities and the equipment and machines therein as physical entities, seem well-suited to deal with the steps companies will need to take to reopen and stay open amidst a quick-changing situation.

Proper sampling is the foundation of any lube analysis program. Irregular sampling procedures and inconsistent sample locations will lead to data that does not reveal problems adequately or is interpreted to identify a problem that does not truly exist, resulting in unexpected downtime or unnecessary repairs.

STLE has contributed several articles featured in the Industrial Lubrication Guide. The articles provide a clear understanding of the importance of proper sampling, instructions on choosing which assets to sample, from which location and how often.

How to control industrial lubricant contamination.

Over time, all assets requiring lubrication suffer a loss of usefulness. They break, become obsolete or, most often, stop performing at their intended levels because of surface deterioration from corrosion or some type of physical wear. The largest share of failures is from some type of contaminant that accelerates processes already going on.

Oil analysis fundamentals. Good maintenance judgment requires operators to take many factors into consideration. Getting the right answer depends on understanding the oil, equipment and operating conditions.

A tribute to the father of tribology. Tribology became widely acknowledged in the 1960s after an eye-opening British study: The Jost Report. It bears the name of H. Peter Jost, a British mechanical engineer who would become known as the founder of tribology. The report revealed that enormous financial losses were occurring due to the result of friction and corrosion.

Understand the fundamentals of oil analysis Knowing normal depends on understanding the oil, equipment and operating conditions

“I

often say that oil analysis is a blood test for machinery,” says Emlyn Eager of BC Transit in Victoria, British Columbia. Most blood tests include a normal range, but a doctor must exercise judgment before using an “abnormal” result to determine treatment.

Could it be a fluke? Is it always that low? When did it change? What else is going on for this patient?

Likewise, oil analysis is used to make judgments about treating ailing fluids and components. Good maintenance judgment requires operators to take many factors into consideration, just as a doctor does.

A good oil analysis program depends on spotting changes early and knowing which changes are important. Both require the oil analyst to know what’s considered normal.

It’s about understanding what can reasonably be expected for a particular situation. In a drivetrain, for example, differentials and final drives have many gears that mesh. Thus, it is normal to find wear metal in the oil from these components.

Ever y component has a characteristic fluid analysis profile. For example, the profile of a Tier 1 diesel engine is different from that of a Tier 4 diesel engine. The difference arises because a Tier 4 engine runs at higher combustion and oil temperatures, which cause the oil to oxidize sooner. But this is normal in a Tier 4 engine and not a concern.

Is it the oil?

“This was one of the more interesting situations I’ve run into,” said Emlyn Eager of BC Transit. “We saw increased sodium in a particular sample. Normally in a cooled component, sodium would mean coolant ingress. But sodium can sometimes also be an oil additive. That’s what it turned out to be; a different oil had been used.

It’s important to pay attention to exactly what oil is being used and to know when there’s been a change in oil type.

Oil analysis skill is knowing how to use characteristic oil profiles and trends to convert analysis results into effective operational decisions.

Know your oil

There are two keys to knowing your oil. The first is having the exact reference sample, down to the last additive. The second is getting a good baseline: that is, knowing what characteristics a sample should have at a regular maintenance interval with a normal or acceptable amount of wear.

Eager said, “Without understanding what a good sample looks like, it’s challenging to make decisions about whether an operational sample contains acceptable amounts of wear material, contamination or degradation (see “Is It the oil?”).”

Know your equipment

“A critical factor for me is you really have to know your equipment before you start analyzing (see “Getting started”),” Eager said. “That’s going to drive any further actions based on what you’re reading. If you don’t know a particular component is externally cooled, you may misinterpret results showing coolant or water ingression. If you don’t know what materials make up a gearbox, you may miss trends that indicate excess wear.”

INDUSTRIAL LUBRICATION GUIDE Getting started Training for new oil analysts is usually trial by fire. A lucky beginner will have experienced workers around to teach the nuances of the equipment and operating conditions.

The solo beginner can research the history of the equipment, review prior samples and look for trends related to oil hours or unit life in that component. This review should include results from other units of the same model, if available.

In addition to learning on the job, newcomers should seek out formal oil analysis training, as well as formal training specific to their industry and equipment. This training can provide broader insights and key criteria to monitor.

or new features might change the oil content (see Figure 1). For example, a new cooler might change the copper levels, or Tier 4 diesel engines have different normal contaminant profiles.

Know your operating context

Finally, look beyond the component to the bigger picture — where and how the component operates. Think broadly about what could be affecting the oil: operational demands, contaminants in the operating area — even the climate. “Temperature can sometimes have a pretty drastic effect on what is considered normal,” Eager said.

Consider a sample from a component that’s very exposed to the elements, such as the final drive of a track-type tractor. “You might see a lot more dirt entry in a sample like that,” Eager said. “Your acceptable level of silica or aluminum would be a lot different in an engine or transmission, where it would be a little bit more concerning to see a trend indicating dirt entry.”

Maintenance practices such as drain intervals also are a factor (see “Best Practices”). For example, increasing the oil drain interval on an engine could increase the iron content in the oil. However, an iron reading that used to signal abnormal wear might now be normal because of the longer interval.

The magnitude of a change is meaningless without operational context. For a certain wear element, additive or viscosity, a 1% to 2% change may be worrisome, but for another factor a 10% to 15% change barely warrants a look. A minute change of 10 to 15 ppm in a wear metal like lead may be concerning if the sample is from engine oil. A larger change of 50 to 70 ppm in iron in the same

• Consult manufacturers and dealers for guidance on baselines — but don’t follow them blindly.

• Learn and practice trend analysis.

Is it the equipment?

“In about 2015, the heavy equipment industry I am involved in saw the introduction of diesel engines that met the Tier 4 emissions standards,” said Darren Goll, Canadian Natural (CNRL). “When we were first introduced to them, our sample results showed increases in copper, potassium and sodium and higher soot numbers (see Figure 1). In the beginning, I (along with all in the industry) saw it as a problem. However, we quickly realized that these changes were normal in a Tier 4 diesel engine.”

“In my early days as a heavyequipment technician, I was tasked with troubleshooting diesel engines in their warranty period that showed elevated copper, lead, and iron. With investigation, I quickly learned these levels were caused by leaching from a copper tube in an engine oil cooler,” said Darren Goll of Canadian Natural (CNRL).

“It turned out such results were seen in industrial diesel engines between the 2,000- and 4,000-hour mark. After that, the levels would taper off to the expected normal values. I see many people new to the industry panic when they see these results and disassemble engines looking for a copper source that they will never find. This example illustrates that you need the facts about the component the sample represents: for example, whether it is from a low-hour engine or from a new cooler that was installed on an engine with longer service.”

Find the right products for diverse industrial lubrication applications The 2020 Plant Engineering Industrial Lubrication Guide informs manufacturers with an understanding of market options and innovations

he idea of industrial lubrication isn’t especially difficult to grasp. If the wheel were one of the first technologies ever, then the lubrication required to grease the wheels couldn’t have been far behind.

Few parts of a manufacturing plant are untouched by some form of lubrication products — from bearings and gears to motors and drives. Finding the right products for these diverse applications is a matter of collaboration involving maintenance teams and their lubrication suppliers. They work in concert to apply the right solution to the right challenge and to recognize and apply breakthroughs in industrial lubrications — and in component materials — to help deliver uncompromised uptime.

The 2020 Plant Engineering Industrial Lubrication Guide, sponsored by Lubriplate Lubricants Co., and prepared in partnership with the Society for Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE), a CFE Media content partner, is evidence of continuing gains in materials sciences, leading to innovations for oils and greases that help keep manufacturing plants humming. The guide provides manufacturers with an understanding of the market options available.

The costs of any lubricant always must be considered in the context of the costs of downtime and safety. We invariably consider what happens when lubricants fail, often because they were not properly monitored or measured. We don’t always look at a catastrophic failure in a gearbox or motor from the issue of safety, but if workers are in the area when these failures occur, employee injury is a real possibility.

The continuing partnership between manufacturers and lubrication suppliers — and working in consort with organizations such as STLE, which provide the technical research and in-depth analysis of industrial needs — keeps these issues at the forefront of any preventive maintenance programs.

As sensors become more attuned to the issues of gear-based systems, this data will also better inform

Create a strategy to control industrial lubricant contamination Identify the source, deal with it

ver time, assets requiring industrial lubrication suffer a loss of usefulness.

They break, become obsolete or stop performing at their intended levels because of surface deterioration from corrosion or physical wear. Most failures are from contamination that accelerates processes in action.

That was the focus of a Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) webinar presented by Evan Zabawski, CLS, the senior technical advisor at TestOil, which is the basis of this article.

Repeated studies and field experiences demonstrate that doing so can extend fluid service lives, with Pall Corp., a filtration company, realizing this by factors of four to six. “Contamination may be our greatest foe. But it’s the easiest to work against to prevent or at least reduce its severity,” said Zabawski.

It’s important to understand where contaminants can come from so effective remediation plans can be put in place.

Standards fall short

Every year, failures occur because of contamination.

“This is not surprising given that new equipment cleanliness and industrial fluid cleanliness standards are inadequate,” Zabawski said.

The API Standard 614/ISO 10438-2 dictates the cleanliness of new equipment during its commissioning phase falls short in helping to define what clean actually is. It prescribes a one-hour oil flush at only design flow rate but doesn’t define a temperature or pressure or encourage using the maximum the piping will allow according to the system design.

eight to 16 times higher particle counts than what OEMs recommend for in-service operating fluids.

The ANSI/AGMA 9005-E02 specification for new oil cleanliness states it would be clean enough for use if it is free of visible suspended or settled contaminants at the time it is installed. Using only the eyes to inspect a sample pulled in a clear container held up to the light looking for anything floating or suspended is not enough.

states the system shall be considered clean when foreign matter such as rust, metal shavings and sand are not visible to the eye and grittiness is not detectable to the touch.

“Touch is very subjective. When trying to feel for small particles, office workers may have a more sensitive sense of touch compared to those handling tools every day. Everyone would sense them differently,” Zabawski said. Using touch detects only large particles, which are not as much a concern as smaller ones.

Most lubricants have an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) guideline for how clean the fluid should be. However, new oil is not filtered for any small micron particle rating from any supplier. It goes through coarse filters at the blending and filling stages, if at all, and possibly again when going through bulk delivery. But new oil sampling shows Figure 3: Adhesive wear. Humans can see particles sized as low as 40 microns, but the most damaging particles are clearance-sized, much smaller than that. The contaminants to be most cognizant of, to remove or prevent from entering a system, are those sized the same as typical dynamic clearances (see Figure 1). In equipment where lubrication is used, a significant portion of the ranges of typical dynamic clearances is in the size bracket of 1 to 5 microns, meaning the smallest particles are most important.

Switching from 40-micron particle filters down to 10-, 5- or 1-micron filters might extend the life of a bearing by multiple lifetimes, but practicalities, feasibility and the economics of the change need to be considered (see Figure 2). Economics play a bigger role in the decision-making process than any other about what level and particle size to filter or control. Space may be needed for larger filter housings and slower flow rates would be needed when they are used. Is a facility willing to give up real estate to install a filtration skid? Would the reliability and increased uptime be worth it?

“Most people stop around the 5- to 10-micron range where it is still practical and doesn’t require a major housing change,” Zabawski said. “At that level, it is probable to expect a two to three times life extension, and the economics may be profitable.

But the critical particle size is still the clearance size, likely less than 5 microns. For the biggest impact, efforts below 5 microns should be considered.”

Small particles, big failures

With tight clearances, it doesn’t take many particles to cause damage. A single clearance-sized particle entering a valve body can cause it to stick and the valve to not function. Static friction, or slow valves, can’t be overcome. Entire assemblies with these problems need removal, cleaning, safely freeing the spool and flushing out before going back into service. Scored or heavily damaged valve bodies often need re-machining, creating significant maintenance situations, the need for more spare parts to be kept on hand and downtime and costs for a

Contamination-related failures where hydraulic cylinders aren’t moving properly or valves don’t actuate properly take even more time to isolate, repair, bring back online and complete QC testing. Responses to these types of failures are on the order of a day or days compared to something like a burst hose, which can be replaced in a matter of hours. Economics dictate it is better to prevent failures from contamination to avoid these costly scenarios.

Contaminant categories

There are broad categories of lubricant contaminant sources. In selfgenerated sources, particles occur inside a system after it is in motion.

External sources draw particles into breathers and other open ports.

Finally, there are built-in sources that exist inside a system from its beginning of life.

Self-generated sources. Internal contaminants are generated from process-related conditions and involve sources such as metallic wear, seal abrasion, chemical corrosion and even improper mixtures of greases and oils used on or inside a system.

There are four categories of metallic wear that can cause particles, either from metal-to-metal contact or involving contact between metal and other particulates. In adhesive wear, the high points or asperities of two metal surfaces come into contact with each other under high pressure (see Figure 3). The surfaces temporarily weld together but tear away from each other because they are in motion. During contact, before tearing apart, there are no contaminants, only rough surfaces touching each other. When the fused metal between the two surfaces tears apart, it is torn off from one of the surfaces and becomes loose and lost inside the system. Adhesive wear causes significant material loss that can lead to further wear.

In the abrasive wear mechanism, metallic parts don’t contact each other directly but wear occurs through shear with particles of the right size (see Figure 4). the clearance size won’t enter the system. But those that are at or near the clearance size will enter the system and contact both surfaces, scuffing and dragging across surfaces, plowing up other bits of material from one or both surfaces and creating even more contaminants.

Metal fatigue also creates contamination. Fatigue occurs after cycles of repeated stressing from being under load (see Figure 5). A metal surface flexes when it experiences high pressures when particles are pushed into it. Repeated flexing creates subsurface cracks that propagate to the surface and cause loss of material there. This material becomes an additional contaminant that can lead to more fatigue.

In this mechanism, two metal surfaces don’t have to contact each other or even experience relative motion.

flex to accommodate the particle. As a mechanism, fatigue can take thousands or millions of cycles of repeated stressing to occur and doesn’t occur rapidly. However, once spalls form and cracks propagate to the surface, they accelerate very quickly, causing concern.

The last type of metallic wear is erosive wear, like sandblasting, where particles much smaller than clearancesized become important (see Figure 6). As fluid flows through an asset, particles suspended in it change direction rapidly and are squeezed into narrow orifices where they impinge on metal surfaces. When fast-moving particles harder than the metal hit the surface, they cause damage, eroding the surface away. Significant erosive wear can cause systems to stop functioning, such as valves that no longer can stop flow.

Seal abrasion is another internal source of contamination (see Figure 7). Seals are designed to keep contaminants out, and good seals stop contaminants from entering a system.

But sometimes seals allow contamination into the system, pushing it against rotating shafts, scoring them and preventing the system from sealing properly. Eventually, the contamination can enter the lubrication, or the lubrication will escape, causing the system to no longer function, a loss of usefulness and more contaminants to be generated by other mechanisms.

Chemical corrosion from water entering a system is another selfgenerated source of contamination.

condensation or a leak in a cooler or other application. It oxidizes metal parts causing rust, and the small rust particles that flake or are rubbed off can be crushed into even smaller particles. Clearancesized particles can easily result from oxidation elsewhere in the system.

“When oxidized gear teeth are seen, it’s not the teeth themselves that we’re worried about. Rust particles generated far away, even on the casing, can enter the gear clearances and cause damage,” Zabawski said. “The water is not the primary concern, but the effects that come about later from the many particles that are created in the system.”

Residue from the oxidation process is another internal source of contamination (see Figure 8). As lubricants are used, they degrade over time. This degradation occurs faster at higher temperatures.

Degrading lubricants form chemically insoluble materials that settle in cooler zones and in tight clearances. “This settling can’t be controlled,” Zabawski said. “As long as water, temperature and metals are in the system, oxidation will be activated in the fluid. Contaminants act as catalysts that accelerate oxidation, creating tar, lacquers and varnishes that become sticky and reduce clearances, increasing friction.”

Mixing oils that aren’t compatible with each other is another source of internal contamination. When oils are mixed that aren’t meant to be, they form oil-insoluble substances. Even if they are clean, incompatible oils create other serious side effects like additive dropout, negative synergies or gelling fluids depending on the base stocks used. When this happens, there’s not only a loss of usefulness to the fluid, but the parts won’t function the way they are designed.

Sometimes oil jugs are not labeled correctly, and sometimes systems aren’t labeled with specific needs.

ccording to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, slips and falls are the number one cause of workplace injuries. External sources. Contamination from sources outside the process environment is often ignored. Airborne contaminants, moisture and contamination caused by adding oil are important to consider (see Figure 9). Taking a flash photograph in a dark area of a plant will show contaminants in the air that can only be seen with a camera flash. They are common in any environment and they are damaging.

When exclusion hardware isn’t placed properly — caps aren’t screwed in, collars are purposely moved out of the way, lids don’t close or are propped open, baskets meant to catch particles are missing or holes are cut to enable some other type of monitoring — more contamination is allowed into a system. In dirty environments where oil vapors can settle on top of tanks, airborne contaminants stick to it and build up on surfaces and can fall in open holes.

Many facilities use the correct exclusion equipment but also could

prevent allowing a lot of contamination from entering their equipment by making several simple fixes. Barrel pumps on oil drums should be sealed.

If they are not, as the oil is pumped out, the air that enters the drum won’t be filtered and contamination will enter. In storage rooms with new oil drums, 90-degree elbows and caps could make a significant improvement on standard gate valves. Or, rather than using gate valves, which are slow acting, hard to flush properly and pick up a lot of contaminants, faster-acting valves like quarter-turn ball valves could be used, allowing the system to be flushed out to make sure it is clean before filling a pail. Think of these types of sources when considering contaminants.

Skipping small steps can render the proper equipment useless. When breathers are installed on tank nipples, but tank lids aren’t sealed, or the tanks are missing gaskets so there is no sealing effect, the breathers are not effective.

A tribute to the father of tribology: Professor H. Peter Jost The contributions of this industry giant won’t be forgotten

M

ost people take non-slip shoes or antislip bathtubs for granted. But nonslippery shoes and anti-slip bathtubs and showers are products tribology has had an instrumental part in bringing about.

Its role is in ensuring that other types of technology we rely on daily perform properly, such as the critical function brakes provide in any form of transportation. This is another invaluable service we owe to the rarely touted field of tribology. Even fewer people know the name Peter Jost, who is often considered one of the founders of the discipline of tribology.

Tribology background

Tribology only became widely acknowledged in the 1960s after an eye-opening British study: The Jost Report. This eponymous report was published

by Jost, a British mechanical engineer who would become known as the founder of tribology. The report revealed that enormous financial losses were occurring due to friction and corrosion. However, knowledge of these factors is virtually as old as time: The ancients as far back as Paleolithic times understood the need to control these forces. The ancient Egyptians reduced friction by using wheels and lubricants in their chariot bearings and in the contraptions that transported the large loads required to build the pyramids.

Jost passed away on June 7, 2016, at the age of 95, after a long, illustrious career. He was educated at Liverpool Technical College and Manchester College of Technology. He started his career as an apprentice at Associated Metal Works in Glasgow.

At the age of 29, he was general manager of the international lubricants company, Trier Brothers, and went on to serve as a director and chairman of several technology and engineering companies. He also served on several industry councils and, until

his death, was president of the International Tribology Council and a lifetime member of the council of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee.

He also was an honorary fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Materials.

He was appointed a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1969, and also was honored by the heads of state of France, Germany, Poland, Austria and Japan, and in 1992 became the first honorary foreign member of the Russia Academy of Engineering.

He held two honorary professorships and 11 honorary doctorates including, in January 2000, the first Millennium honorary science doctorate. Finally, in 2009, well into his golden years when most would be content to rest on their laurels, Jost was still a pioneer in the industry and looking to the future when he co-launched the principles of Green Tribology, leading the way for the first Green Tribology World Congress. Shortly before his death, he was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Design issues

Jost’s groundbreaking report, which was commissioned by the British government, shed light on the fact that, for the first time, problems of lubrication in engineering were primarily issues of design. Their solutions, Jost posited, required a variety of skills from scientific disciplines other than mechanical engineering, including chemistry and materials science, solid body mechanics and physics. Jost and his team calculated that enormous financial losses could be evaded because of fewer breakdowns causing lost production, lower energy consumption, reduced maintenance costs and longer machine life. several national tribology centers were initiated in Britain, although originally it was Britain’s competitors who took the lead in the immediate aftermath of the revelatory report.

While tribology is a relatively new science, paradoxically, Jost paid a debt to those scientific geniuses who paved the way before him and acknowledged that the concepts behind it had been extant for centuries.

Tribology has come a long way since it was first discovered, thousands of years ago, during the Paleolithic period, when a rudimentary bearing was fashioned from the bone of an antler. The Promethean innovation also was used as a tool to spark fire solely by friction. Since the Babylonian wheel and tripartite disc wheel used in Mesopotamian chariots were created during 3500 B.C. and 2800 B.C., respectively, such tribological progress has been imperative to sustaining the very survival of mankind, from that time up through today and beyond.

It was Leonardo da Vinci who postulated that friction is proportional to load and independent of the area of the item being moved. At this seminal moment, an inchoate version of tribology was approached as a legitimate science. In 1687, Sir Isaac Newton weighed in, observing the fluid properties that affect lubricated friction, and in 1699 Guillaume Amontons elucidated da Vinci’s two hypotheses, elevating them to incontrovertible laws.

Finally, in 1780, the last in a triumvirate of classic friction laws was decreed with C.A. de Coulomb’s research, which presented the theory that friction is independent of sliding speeds. Modern scientific studies were conducted in the late 1930s

by F.P. Bowden and David Tabor, who gave the discipline the moniker triphasic. Perhaps unsurprisingly, that particular portmanteau never caught on, paving the way for Professor Jost to coin the science’s official name: tribology.

It’s all about the name

Tribology is a more apt term than tribophysics due to the interdisciplinary nature of the science, which is a mélange of chemistry, physics, material science, mechanical engineering and increasingly, biology. However, what really helped tribology www.plantengineering.com

make its mark was the price tag Jost’s report attributed to the cost of wear and tear. The pecuniary benefit of tribology has inspired numerous studies since. While enormous savings could be achieved with more adept tribological practices, considering the wear on tires, shoes and clothes alone, which is easily in the billions, the benefits of better tribology protocols far exceeds the financial. With its dramatic role in improving the bearings in car and airplane engines so that failure is virtually impossible, tribology veers into lifesaving territory. This, of course, is just one example.

In just about every field imaginable, tribological advances are synonymous with technological innovation. For example, a large portion of global energy production is consumed by extraneous friction and wear, which implies that more effective solutions to tribological concerns could lead to superior energy efficiency and, therefore, a cleaner, more salubrious environment.

As the wheel of time turns, tribolog y will continue to be of incalculable significance to achieving sustainability and energy efficiency for a variety of applications in daily living. So, the next time you’re taking an evening stroll, pressing the brakes on your car or performing any of the countless quotidian activities where friction is required, take a moment to silently thank the unsung field of tribology, the non-squeaky wheel of the scientific world that keeps all things running smoothly and to its aptly unassuming adoptive father, who took a nameless, orphaned science and gave it its respective place in the annals of scientific innovation.
