Happy New Year!

Our holidays were magical with two grandkids and another on the way. We enjoy having our kids here in town. We got to experience so much of what Modesto had to offer, like Modesto on Ice, Rockin’ Holiday, craft fairs, makers markets, holiday movies, concerts and so much more. But 2023 went by so fast and we are standing here at the edge, looking out over a big future and the way forward. There are freeways, there are rocky roads, hills, valleys and there are twisty paths, but all along the way, if we lead with helping others, looking out for people who need a lift, and being who we are, and trying to find the good in all of our possibilities, we can make 2024 special. ModestoView is all about the positive and the possible. We also encourage people to get involved and make a difference. But a lot of places aren’t like this. There is a lot of cruel and hateful sites on social media, that mock the homeless, feed negative news, taunt or try to control people that don’t believe like they do, or worse yet, pull our country apart and put people in danger. We must stand up to this with truth and a

counter narrative. There are two paths; we can be lead by fear that breeds hatred, or we can be lead by possibilities and accomplishments. I choose the latter, and the fact that you are reading this, you might think the same. Who is getting stuff done, what groups are making a difference, and are we looking out for each other? It’s really pretty simple. We are only successful when the people around us are successful and feel respected and valued. I think that this year, being positive will be extra important. Modesto is poised to be an even better community, and you see the new teamwork in the downtown organizations, the neighborhoods, the business community and our local government really trying to find ways to make our area better. Let’s be a part of that. This month the GI Forum Citizen of the Year is recognized along with new recognition for Veteran of the Year and Community Service Hero of the Year. I was honored as Citizen of the Year in 2019 and that inspired me to do even more to help our community. This year, Evan Porges, Birgit Fladagar and Chris Guptill will be recognized on January 13.

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

ModestoView is loaded with good things about our community and our people. Maybe you have a story that we need to tell? Let me know. There is a caution out there, The A&W is gone. For the last decade, it slowly fell to pieces and ended in a lawsuit. Do we do this to ourselves? In the local Modesto Now and Then and You Grew Up in Modesto Facebook pages, many ask repetitive questions like “Who remembers the Prescott Drive In?” or “Who remembers Burge’s Drive In?” Yet when we have the chance to save them, we don’t. When they are gone, we will scroll the pages of social media asking “Who remembers?” We can do better and we need an active Landmark Preservation Commission. We must recognize that our past is valuable for our future. It gives us a real story, true character and let’s use that to build our future story. You look at the successful cities, and these are the ones that value their history. That’s why North Beach is shining in SF while the giant office buildings sit vacant. The Graffiti USA Museum will help tell our story. Construction is happening and Phase 2 is beginning. Read more in this issue. As we think about how we go forward, it’s crazy that we ended last year with Beatles and Stones at the top of the charts. 53 years after the Beatles last played together, they had a #1 single and the Stones had a #1 album. That is why, after all these years, we ask the question, “Beatles or Stones” of our InterView subject. Check this month to see how Jessica Hill, Modesto’s Community & Economic Director answered. Let recognize and support the good here in our local community. Support local businesses and let’s keep our hard earned dollars right here in town. Please read these pages and support the businesses that advertiser here, as they are helping keep the positive story of Modesto alive. I am grateful for all of them. I hope to see you out and about this month and let’s do some great things together. Thanks, Chris Murphy, Founder and Publisher, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

The Modesto Peace Life Center, founded in 1970, is celebrating 53 years of activism, community outreach, and peace-making and is starting 2024 with events and celebrations that highlight what makes the Modesto Peace Life Center so special. During the 1970s, the Center advocated for environmental protections, an end to the war in Vietnam, and the continuation and promotion of the Civil Rights Movement and has evolved over the decades to address social justice issues as they arise and support our community. Through this

collaboration with diverse organizations and non-profit work over the years, the Modesto Peace Life Center has started and cultivated many cornerstone events and traditions in the community. As a young woman who grew up in the educational system in Modesto, I have fond memories of the programs and events that the center has both started and supported such as the Peace Essay Contest, the Day of Respect, Peace Camp, Peace Vigils at Five Points, Pancake Breakfasts, the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration, and of

Happy New Year. We go into 2024

New Year New View By Jim Christiansen

with new resolutions, new activities, and changes to some longstanding traditions. Here is some of what is coming up in the Modesto Art Scene in the coming year. January 28 is the last day to enter the Stanislaus Artist Open Studio weekend April 13 and 14. 2024 the Open Studio reverts to one weekend event, back to the original Spring April outing. Entry is open to any artist in all mediums in Stanislaus County with the $75 entry fee. Maps will be free again this year, and available online and in print. Participating artists can enter the Map Cover contest, with a $250 prize to the winning design, with the finalist image used on the cover and promotional graphics. Pick up an entry form at the Mistlin Gallery or order digital files for entry and cover contest at openstudio.stanislaus@ gmail.com Keep up with Stanislaus Artist Open Studio on the FB page. 2024 will not hold a Fall-October event. “Single Exposure” showcases the vibrant and thought-provoking creations of Don Hall in a Solo show. Don’s colorful largescale self-portraits in paintings and ceramic

sculptures will be featured. The artist reception will take place on January 18 during the Art Walk. The gallery exhibit run is from January 2 to 28. The Downtown Modesto Art Walk will continue monthly, every Third Thursday in 2024. On the January scheduled map, Mistlin Gallery, The Chartreuse Muse, Lo-Fi Cocktails, Dragonfly Art for Life, The State Theatre, 18Seventy Brewing Company. Look for expanded venues, and added activities in the coming year with Art Walk. The Stanislaus Arts Council is making some changes in 2024. The Arts Council is doing business operating the Mistlin Gallery, and Central California Art Association, and its activities range beyond the visual arts and are involved in different arts activities across the county. Dominique Johnson has been hired to be Executive Director for the Arts Council, succeeding David Schroeder who is stepping down from the position, but will remain on the board as Vice President. Keith Boggs is the President. Dominique is an artist and gallery mem-

ber, who comes with a Business Administration and Marketing degree from CSU Stanislaus. Her first undertaking as the new Director will be an emphasis on Fundraising and greater visibility of the Arts Council in the community. A meet Dominique Johnson event will be part of the January Mistlin Gallery members meeting on January 29. Liz Perez is a new gallery marketing volunteer, from the Cancer Survivor classes, who wants to give back to the art community using her career skills in Marketing, Sales, and Interior Design, starting with new displays in the windows. The Arts Council is tentatively scheduled for 11 dates in 2024 for the Grace Lieberman Cabaret series. The two project international photography projects will be featured next month. The Arts Council also supervises the Heartland Grant projects locally and featured lately on the “Expose Yourself to Art” Facebook Live and YouTube online shows.

2024 is also a new year of Art Classes at The Chartreuse Muse and its Clay Room. Dragonfly Art for Life recently held 4 class sessions in animation. MJC regular and adult extension classes are coming up in a variety of media. Good resolution or give yourself the experience of artistic expression If you were late on Christmas gifts for the New Year, my Coffee Cat Calendars, mugs, and more are available for all of 2024 at Coffeecatscalendar.com The year ahead looks great.

BREW VIEW Black Orchid Brewing: Your Neighborhood Watering Hole

I have great news for NorthEast Modesto and Riverbank-you’re getting a new brewery! Have you heard of Black Orchid Brewing yet? I bet you have noticed the signage with curiosity, wondering when you can have your first pint. Black Orchid Brewing nearly a decade in the making, with two of those grueling years in the building on Oakdale and Sylvan. Working from the walls and inward, they have repaired and built us a lovely little hang out with gorgeous woodwork welcoming you as soon as you step in. It’s a bit of an inconspicuous location-from a glance you wouldn’t think anything was back there, but I think that gives it a “if you know you know” vibe, making you feel extra special if you are in the loop. Joffre Roberts and Henry Penado, brother-in-laws and best friends, started out as many do, homebrewing, hanging out, having fun, and drinking beer. Joffre started to appreciate beer after a vacation in

By Brandilyn & Christopher Mitchell

Germany. “My friend gave me their version of a Bud Light and it was DELICIOUS. I thought, ‘Wait, this is their bad beer? What does their craft beer taste like?’ He took me to a beer garden and that was that!” He was hooked, and then made some batches of his own when he returned home. Then he fell in love with the hobby and wanted to learn everything he possibly could. He took some classes at Cal Poly Pomona, and worked as an unpaid intern with Don Miller, founder of Euryale Brewing Company in Riverside, California, helping to open up one of Don’s breweries. Joffre worked many years as a chef, using the same science to instead create dreamy dishes. “Will there be food in Black Orchid’s future?” I asked. “Oh no, we are focused on beer. All the beer!” he answered. There is talk of food trucks and partnerships with nearby restaurants though, so never fear on the food front! Henry’s love of beer started when he took a trip to Boston and toured Samuel Adams.

Then their idea for a brewery was born from a joke while they were on a cruise, doing a tasting on the boat. The joke wouldn’t die though, it became a “What if?” then a “How?” to a “Where should we open?” With the beginning of the dream Joffre, Henry and Tyanne, Joffre’s sister, continued to develop the dream with their first business plan and the idea started to become clear. Joffre Sr. and Melinda, father and mother, got involved and Black Orchid Brewing was incorporated and became a family business. After searching all over the 209 (and even North Bay) they settled on Modesto, where Joffre and his wife live. And they picked a great part of town where we needed a brewery. I’m tickled to report they’ll be reusing water whenever possible, using fresh local ingredients and donating their spent grains to local farms. Sustainability is vital, especially in our agricultural community. And how did they get the name? The best answer I have ever received asking that question, “All the family put names they liked in a hat and we voted on them. Black Orchid won. It’s elusive, black orchids don’t exist. Except this one.” Henry said. They’ll be able to make 25,000 gallons a year, and serve it to you fresh and icy on their 12 taps. With flavors like Honey Lavender, Thai Tea Stout, Jackfruit IPA, and all the

traditional styles you know and love like IPAs, Cream Ales, Lager and Pilsner-they will have a style for everyone. “We want to share our love of beer. If we make and don’t like it, we won’t serve it. If it’s on tap, then we love it.” You’ll be able to come pick your favorite beer after March 1st. Stay tuned for their grand opening information on Facebook and Instagram! We hope to catch you down there discovering your favorite soon!

Modesto Garden Club

A Study In Starlets

By Harrison Power

By Aaron Rowan

Starting off the new year, what better way to celebrate than a major milestone of a long-time Modesto organization: the Modesto Garden Club. The contributions of the Modesto Garden Club to the community are evident throughout town and have been for 100 years, with focuses on urban beautification and preservation of green spaces. Coming up next month is the Garden Club’s 100th Anniversary, so here’s a look at how the organization first began and what the Club has blossomed into since its seed was first planted. The Modesto Garden Club was founded by Frederick “Pop” Knorr, a professor at Modesto Junior College, on February 12, 1924, when the first meeting of the Club was held at the home of Mrs. B. F. Surryhne on Sycamore Avenue. Knorr was a naturalist and conservationist, and early advocate of civic beautification in Modesto. One of the first major contributions to the community was the approval of a $100 donation in December 1924 to purchase shrubs and plants for the landscaping of Modesto Junior College, which was to be laid out by Gilkey of Oakland who also had directed plans for Modesto High School’s grounds. In February 1932, the Modesto Garden Club

planted magnolia trees in Graceada Park along Needham Avenue, and on February 22nd dedicated two benches in honor of the bicentennial of George Washington’s birthday. On May 10th, 1932, the Club hosted its first Spring Garden Tour, which included tours of gardens belonging to Mrs. Paul Snowden, Mrs. Meyer, and Mrs. F. Goldberg. The contributions to the community and Modesto’s civic beauty did not end there, as numerous projects were implemented over the decades to follow, including but not limited to the McHenry Mansion orange grove (1989), McClatchy Square Rose Garden (1996), McClure Country Place gardens (1997), Aileen Gallo Memorial Flower Clock (2001), George Lucas Plaza planter (2006), Virginia Corridor Rose Garden (2008), and the Modesto Arch planters (2012). The Garden Club is excited for its 100th Anniversary celebration next month where they will be constructing and maintaining a new Centennial Garden next to the Rose Garden at Orangeburg and the Virginia Corridor. If you can donate any amount to help this beautification project, please send checks to: 622 14th St Modesto 95354 or visit their website www.modestogardenclub.org for more information for the celebration event on February 12th!

“My life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplaces of existence. These little problems help me to do so.” - Sherlock Holmes. I share this sentiment with my favorite literary character, although the only crimes I’m trying to help solve are the shortage of unique musical offerings in Modesto and the often meager audience support when such offerings do appear. Another attribute Sherlock and I have in common is - surprise! - a fondness for the opera. Opera is glorious. It’s soul-stirring. It’s enriching. It’s alimentary, my dear Watson. It makes a considerable difference to me, to have someone on whom I can thoroughly rely to curate this highest expression of music. Several someones, in fact: the amazing Opera Modesto team. The new year commences with a double..... make that a triple feature brought to you by this very crew. It begins Wednesday, January 10 at the State Theatre, with a program titled ‘Singing Outside The Box’ starring two of the most accomplished vocalists with Modesto roots: American Idol contender & Postmodern Jukebox singer Effie

Passero, and Broadway performer Jeremy Stolle of ‘The Phantom Of The Opera’ fame. This is a crossover concert not to be missed. Doors at 6 pm, show at 7, $20-$60 tickets. It only gets more magnificent from there. On Saturday & Sunday, Jan. 13 & 14, the Story Into Song literary opera series returns to the State Theatre with ‘Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Fallen Giant’ which sees our sleuth team up with the boy with the magic beans. I’d have gone with ‘The Sign Of Four’ as the ideal Sherlock opera adaptation: that novella’s got intrigue, romance, hidden treasure, and what I think is an ariaworthy conversation where Holmes talks about “the most winning woman” he ever knew. But the classic books-turned-operas that Roy & company choose always turn out spectacular, and I’ve got no complaints here. It’s deerstalker vs. beanstalker in the professional world premiere of this lighthearted operatic fairy tale/mystery mashup. Showtime is 2 pm on both days. Prices range from $20 to $40. The plot thickens even further the night before the opera. Friday 1/12 at 7 pm, also at the State, get your gumshoe on at an opening gala that includes an original murder mystery game designed by local author and Opera Modesto board member Hillari DeSchane. Party like a Baker Street Irregular with appetizers & desserts, costumes, and guest appearances by cast members from the opera. General admission is $60, available at www.operamodesto.org. Buy your tickets at once if convenient. If inconvenient, buy your tickets all the same. Be a part of one of the most exciting weeks of Modesto music we’ll enjoy in 2024 Intimate performances. Jessica Hill W E I TER V Community and Economic Development

By Chris Murphy

2024 is a fresh start for Modesto in so many ways. You can feel the positive progress in downtown and other parts of our city, as Measure L and H funds begin to show results in addition to the young energy of new businesses and community support.

Modesto’s Community and Economic Development Director for 2024 heralds a new beginning for our city. The palpable positive progress in downtown and other areas reflects collaborative efforts between Visit Modesto, Modesto Downtown Improvement District, and the Downtown Modesto Partnership, all guided by new leadership and shared objectives. At the heart of these advancements are the City of Modesto’s Community and Economic Development policies and initiatives. Under the current leadership, there is a concerted effort to align political, business, and volunteer endeavors, steering them toward a common goal – fostering economic vibrancy in Modesto. This proactive approach has already yielded significant results, including the opening of new restaurants and businesses, the establishment of the Modesto Children’s Museum, the debut of Intermission at the State, and the impending arrival of the Graffiti USA Museum – all transformative developments for our city. Jessica Hill, the driving force behind these positive changes, brings nearly a decade of dedicated service to our community. With a degree in business economics from UC Santa Barbara and a certificate from Cambridge University, Jessica’s professional journey includes serving as the Director of Development for Habitat for Humanity, an organization with a direct impact on addressing housing needs in our community. Since 2016, she has played a vital role in the City of Modesto’s Community and Economic Development Department, assuming the Director position in August. In this key role, she plays a pivotal part in shaping Modesto’s future, fostering long-term success, business development, and job creation. Her well-earned position is marked by a fresh infusion of energy, innovation, and decisive action. Let’s get to know Jessica.

MV: What do you see as some of the obstacles our city faces to move to the next level? JH: Devoting resources to address homelessness restricts our capabilities in other areas, as a significant portion of our resources is concentrated in this domain. Numerous challenges hinder the city’s progression to the next level, and homelessness particularly affects our community. MV: Are there any big changes you want to make with our long-term vision and direction? JH: Promoting mixed-use developments that integrate residential, commercial, and recreational spaces to create a 24/7 lively urban environment. MV: How do you think Modesto can differentiate itself from other like size communities in 2024? JH: Modesto is fortunate to have a vibrant community of residents eager to witness the city’s ongoing success. By fostering partnerships between public and private entities, Modesto will persist in setting itself apart and thrive in its unique identity. MV: Modesto has a cool retro history with our classic Graffiti heritage, how do you think we can really leverage this to create some community identity? JH: Modesto boasts a rich history, and I believe we can build upon these legacies to forge a continuous and unified vision for the city’s future.

ModestoView: Do you feel that there is a positive momentum right now? Jessica Hill: Modesto is currently experiencing an exhilarating period marked by a harmonious collaboration between City leadership, the City Council, and the community. Together, we are dedicated to making Modesto the premier destination to be. MV: How did your previous career with Habitat help guide what you want to accomplish with the City of Modesto? JH: Working for Habitat provided a unique perspective of being a customer to the City of Modesto, especially throughout the development process. This experience afforded me insights into the intricacies and challenges associated with navigating the various stages of development, from initial

planning to regulatory approvals. As a result, I gained valuable firsthand knowledge of the city’s procedures, regulations, and interactions crucial in the development landscape. This perspective serves as a valuable asset as I now contribute to the City of Modesto’s Community and Economic Development Department, where I actively engage in planning and executing initiatives for the city’s long-term success and growth.

MV: How do you see the role of travel and tourism in building a healthy economy? JH: Primarily, our focus should be on instilling pride in Modesto’s residents by leveraging our strengths and fostering additional economic development opportunities. As we achieve this, Modesto will naturally evolve into a desirable destination, drawing in travel and tourism to further fortify our robust economy.

MV: We focus on downtown a lot, why do you think a healthy downtown is important to our city at large? JH: A thriving and dynamic downtown fosters a distinctive sense of place and community pride. It stands as a sought-after destination, drawing individuals from both within and outside the community. FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com

MV: Modesto is working hard to attract the next generation and get our kids to come back after college; what things can we do to encourage and enable this to happen. JH: Modesto fosters a strong sense of community and offers diverse industries for building successful careers. I believe that by persistently enhancing our attraction efforts, we can not only retain our talented workforce but also draw in new professionals seeking a supportive community and ample career opportunities. Strengthening ties between local businesses, educational institutions, and community organizations will contribute to a thriving environment that encourages innovation, collaboration, and sustained economic growth. Additionally, promoting Modesto as an attractive place to live, work, and play will not only benefit our residents but also position our city as a top choice for prospective businesses and residents, thereby ensuring long-term prosperity and vitality. MV: If you had no budget limitations, what programs would you implement? JH: My focus would be on implementing revitalization initiatives aimed at transforming the primary corridors in the city and rejuvenating our downtown area. These endeavors aim to attract new businesses, playing a key role in revitalizing the community and addressing vacant storefronts.

Four-cheese Tortellini, Mediterranean Pesto Chicken, Cioppino, Lamp Chops, Coconut prawns, and flaming Saganaki cheese. These tastes are amazing. Rich, perfect pasta, worlds of spice and nice portions are what greet you when you dine at D’Forno in Downtown Modesto. Besides being a great new restaurant, D’Forno has great roots here in our community. David Alonzo is proud to bring a new level of flavors to downtown Modesto. Over the years as he and his brothers owned and operated restaurants all over our region including Papavalos and Papapolloni, He had previously not considered being in downtown Modesto, but then one night, after a show at the Gallo Center, he thought something was missing and knew he had a great offering and an idea. Located on 13th St, between J and I Streets, D’Forno has now taken its place in the top of our local restaurant offerings. The flavors, the cheeses, the sauces, the presentation and most of all, the way guests are treated and the quality of signature dishes make D’Forno welcoming. And this is personal. The D stands for David and Forno is Italian for “oven” and the rest is magic. Ever since David Alonzo was 12 years old, he has been in the kitchen creating wonderful food dishes. David feels that one of the most important characteristics of a restaurant is consistency. Before Papapavlo’s, he was a trainer and opened, managed and executive chef at corporate restaurants where he learned that the experience must be right every time. That attention to detail is what makes his restaurants stand out. From the menu, to the always fresh ingredients, the service, the ambience, the menu, to the plating, everything needs to

D’Forno

be just right. And just right it is. Family is the secret recipe. In the kitchen at D’Forno is his nephew Sergio Alonzo. David has been working with Sergio for over 12 years and the dishes are faithfully prepared, using only the best ingredients in a great exhibition kitchen, where the sounds and the flames of great cooking enhance your experience. Every detail is noticed, 100% fresh cheeses, meat, fish, chicken and in house prepared sauces and house made pasta really stand out. One of my favorite flavors is the Chicken Piccata with a great lemon caper sauce. The scallops in the Cioppino

are just perfect and tender soaking up the rich red sauce. This is just the start of the D’Forno dining experience. Some of my favorite Mediterranean dishes are on this menu as well as a full Mexican food section. There is really something for everyone from flaming Saganaki cheese, to the Elianna’s Chicken pita, gyros plate and a full array of Mexican tastes including the D’Forno burrito and of course, house-made pizzas. Start your experience with a drink from the bar, with the traditional favorites to classic craft cocktails. Get into the spirit with the starters and then have your taste

buds impressed with the entrees. You will recognize many of your favorite servers and this new place feels like home right away. Every dish is great, and you really need to give it a try.

BIG VIEW

Football for the Future! By Chris Murphy

Here we are, nearing the end of one of the weirdest NFL football seasons ever. ModestoView readers know that many of the local restaurants and bars featured in ModestoView are also great please to watch your favorite teams. Are you in the playoffs? Will you be a national champion? Can you stay healthy? Can you play into the future? Could you imagine being a quarterback at the age of 50 or even 60? Would’t it be cool if you could get out there any play? There is hope and it just may be the future of football. In 2022, the NFL switched the annual Pro Bowl to flag football. After years of avoiding injury to star players, this new format has excited football fans and the sport of flag football is spreading across the USA, and it’s not just for youth anymore. And, did you know there is a world champion and national champion flag football team, right here in Modesto. Meet 56-year-old Trevor Tucker and 60 year old Randy Scacuto, both from Modesto. They both played high-school football back in the day, both quarterbacks. They love football today as much as they did then. The reason they can still play and win, is flag football. In 1996 they connected and put a competitive flag football team together. Randy is in construction and Trevor is in the fire sprinkler business, so they had some flexibility of time and they rallied players from all over California, even some college and former pro players to field a team. Trevor Tucker, grew up on Modesto’s west side near the old Early Dawn went to Davis High, moving to Idaho. He later hitch hiked back to Garden Grove then back home to Modesto as a professional fire sprinkler system contractor. He never lost the football bug and after recovering from ACL replacements, he wanted to put a team together with Randy. In 2001, they went through three 25-team divisions for a national win. Randy also went to the National Championships in 4 x 4 Air it Out series and played against Brett Favre. In 2012, Trevor and Randy were really fired up to compete and had put together s stellar team that included some college and ex-NFL athletes and went to the Pro level for 2012, playing against much younger players. “Trevor is a motivator, a teacher and brings the best out of people”, explains Randy, the intrepid quarterback. “We have a diverse group every year and we all get together to win”. And win they have. Playing at the “Comp” level, they built a WestMark championship team in 2001. In 2010, the Source One team was built and went on to win a national championship. In 2012, Source One went to the Pro division and won all 8 of their series games in 2012. In 2013, they repeated with a back-to-back national championship. They took that victory and went on to win the World Championships in March 2013. Fast forward TEN more years, Trevor and Randy put a new team of both older and younger athletes together and as Bishop Sycamore team, they won the National Championship in 2022. In 2023, they came back again as the King Apes and went 28-0 to win in Las Vegas. Trevor explains, “we weren’t the BEST team, but we were the best when it mattered most”.

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

This is an amazing accomplishment, to win back to back National Championships, ten years apart with athletes in their 50s. The team will be at the national championships this year as a defending champion, but at a different level. We will keep you posted how it turns out. But wait, there’s more. In 2028, Flag Football will be an Olympic sport and the sport of flag football is growing rapidly, at all ages and is exploding as a women’s sport. Flag football was approved by the CIF as an approved high school sport in February of 2023. There were seven schools that fielded a team on fairly short notice for the 23/24 school year. Over 70 teams were fielded and more are expected next season. Will DeBoard, Assistant San Joaquin/Sac CIF Commissioner explains further, “Right now, and in the near future, flag football is girls-only in the CIF. It was wildly successful in its first year; we had about 70 schools play out of our 175 full-member schools. Modesto City Schools is definitely planning on having flag football in 2024 (it’s a fall sport), as are the Turlock Schools. We had championships in two divisions this year and I’m guessing there will be at least three divisions next year”. Could this be the next big thing? Football, without the impact, for all ages and all people. One thing we all know, to live a long healthy life, you need to keep moving and stay active and there are so many ways do this and create new friendships. Maybe you will go to the nationals and win back-to-back, or just have fun here in town, but either way, it looks like fun. But as Trevor says, “It’s not as much risk but just as much fun”. Trevor and Randy’s advice: “All youth should be playing flag football and work on their skills before you ever put pads on. If you aren’t that good, you can get good as it is not so much about size it’s about skills, moves and finesse.”

Here are just a few of the leagues happening in our region...

The Goat Bar and Grill

10th and J is still the center of downtown Modesto and the Goat is in new hands with Les Knoll and Jill and Ryan Irons. The corner location features new game room and even has a snooker table. The bar style menu is great with gourmet burgers, steak salads, pizzas, big tacos and even fry bread tostadas! The Goat bar is always a place to be and you can even get one of the Goat sweets, like funnel cake fries. Best of all, they plan on keeping live music as a focal point to the Goat. Located in 10th St Plaza, the Goat is front and center to the good things happening in downtown. Get a good patio seat for the events and get ready for a great Music in the Plaza season later this year.

Standard Pub

East-side Modesto has a new pub. One of Modesto’s favorite locations is back and better than ever. Full menu of traditional entrees and new takes on broasted chicken and special brisket burger, burrata appetizers and hall of fame fish and chips. LoFi Luncheonette

14th and J is filled with new energy and excitement and, I have to confess, it’s so cool that we have a “Luncheonette” in downtown. Not only that, we have counter seating that is right out of our classic retro history. Open for breakfast and lunch most days, the menus offers great omelets like my favorite the California with a special spicy chile sauce and slow cooked grits. Emily’s scones are very tasty and there is a full-service espresso bar. There is also a good lunch menu that has something for everyone. @ dinerbylofi 1325 J Street Wed- Fri: 9am - 2pm Sat/Sun open at 10am

By Abigail Power 10th Street is continuing to come alive and Downtown Modesto is happy to welcome local Tandoori Flame with its delicious food and Indo-American flavors. With two regional locations in Patterson and Westley, the Dhanju family opened up the third Tandoori Flame at 907 10th Street in early September and its already been a huge success with a menu with over 70 items, including vegetarian and meat entrees, but the View Crew’s favorite is the signature Butter Chicken! Pastries, fresh bread, cookies, croissants, and more – what more could you want?! Ashley Olson has been serving up her delicious bakes at Food Fix Butcher & Baker for years and now has a dedicated sweet treat storefront adjacent to the lunch hot spot. Bakeshop Modesto has an epic rotating menu of baked goods that highlight seasonal flavors and Ashley’s favorite recipes, and the View Crew had their minds blown by the Orange Cranberry cookies and fresh croissants. It’s so amazing to be able to get freshly baked bread and pastries right in our downtown and we can’t wait to see what the Food Fix & Bakeshop team has in store. Open Monday to Saturday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at 940 11th Street. @bakeshopmodesto

Oakdale’s New Culinary Frontier, Bistro 120

Bistro 120 is the new culinary hotspot, welcoming guests for lunch and dinner 7-days a week. The restaurant’s warm and friendly staff, creative cocktails, and a one-of-a-kind dessert elevate the perfectly executed California cuisine to extraordinary heights. Can Modesto become the Haiku Capital of the World?

Every other month at LoFi Diner, Burn & Rave has been hosting an epic beatnik Poetry Night and Haiku Battle, popularizing the format and pitting haiku against haiku in a fun and inspirational battle until a winner emerges! These short form poems, which originated in Japan in the 9th century, consist of three lines and 17 total syllables in this order: 5/7/5. Blue Monday Christmas

By Eric Benson

Man, this year snuck up on me, Christmas time again? Well out with the old and in with the new, and new years folks. We have lost a few musicians and fans this year and we remember them through celebration and song. My good friend and music fan Mr. Darrel Stats has passed away. Darrell had a long run 87 years old and had many friends in the arts community, brutally honest he would come to my events and say it’s too Friggin Loud, and also very generous with compliments when the music was good. He will be missed, a generous soul who knew everyone downtown and loved to tell their business, not to be confused with gossip. The Blue Monday Band was blessed to play a Rockin’ Holiday gig and played the Christmas gem with John Burt on Sax, Cortez Flores on Drums, Raul Slaps on Bass, and Eric Benson on keys. We hope you are in the arms of warmth and love now and in the new year. New Year’s resolutions well I might stop all my nasty

habits and join the sainthood but the jury is still out! Blue Monday Party is looking for a new home folks, so any ideas give me a holler. Any venues that would work hosting the Blue Monday Band two times a month and let the band play on! Would like to thank my fellow musicians for their dedication to the craft, Dave Hawks and Cortez Flores on Drums, Conrad Johnson and John Adey on Bass, Andrew Rosenblum and John Burt on Sax, Eric Benson and Pat Governor on Keys, and special guest Gene Radino on Guitar for making it happen. And thanks to the fans and jammers for their support and keeping things rolling. We also would like to thank Chris Murphy and Gary Nelson for giving their loving support to the Blue Monday Scene which yours truly appreciates! Some great shows at Gallo Center but also check out some great venues out of town: The Newman Theatre, Vinhose Tapas Bar in Merced, Yoshi’s Oakland best jazz shows, Khumba Music Center Santa Cruz, and Piedmont Piano Company, the Back Door and the Sound Room located in Oakland. Please continue to come out folks as we can’t do it without you!

Phase 2 – Beginning Now! If you have not seen the Graffiti USA Museum lately, you need to take a cruise by to check it out. Big things are happening as we begin Phase 2 and we are excited to show you. You can view the complete replacement of all the exterior parking and access areas, making way for the beautiful round diner entrance. This major transformation project for the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum began in December. The current projects underway are primarily made possible by the generosity of corporate sponsors and founding donors, including George Reed Family Companies, Boyett Petroleum, Beard Land Improvement Company, Burkett’s Pool Plastering, Joseph Bondi, and Allan and Pat Ramsay and the smart project management of Ron Pippen and Carly Russell.

Dock & Outbuilding Removal

The entire outside parking and structures have been removed to make way for the new parking lot and future classic diner entrance. Complete new electrical connections, new car entry ramps, and modern ADA access are being built to create a seamless flow between the Museum and our parking lot.

FIT VIEW

Utilities Moved

The necessary utilities will be relocated to accommodate the museum layout. This includes electrical, gas, and other essential services to ensure smooth operations within the museum premises.

Building Muscles in 2024

By Efren Martinez

Flatwork

Flatwork, such as concrete pouring and leveling, will be carried out to provide a stable and accessible surfaces for visitors and additional display space for the Museum.

Storm Drain

A new storm drain system will be installed to effectively manage rainwater and prevent any potential flooding issues. This will help maintain the safety and integrity of the Museum’s exterior space.

Paving

The Museum’s entire parking lot will be replaced, making way for tour bus space, future car and show events and visitors while connecting to North 9th St / Historic 99 and Coldwell Ave.

Landscaping

Drought-tolerant landscaping will be added to the Museum’s exterior as part of this significant transformation project. Using native plants and xeriscaping techniques will create a beautiful, sustainable, low-maintenance landscape. Happy New Year, friends! Along with the New Year, comes all those resolutions we make every year. Such as, “I’m going to work out more,” “I’m going to eat healthier,” or “I’m going all in 110% in taking care of myself.” Why? Because I want to have that Movie Star model body. My advice? Hit the snooze button for another 15 minutes; you’re dreaming. Let’s get real and serious. Friends, let’s forget about having that Movie Star body until you actually become a Movie Star with all the resources they have at their disposal. Instead, what I say to you, all my Super Star friends, is let’s just focus on living the healthiest life we can and be comfortable with the skin we are in. Seriously! I love you just the way you are, and so do your true friends. Maybe take a different approach and change it up. Replace the New Year resolution with a focus on building muscle instead of losing weight. Every year, right around October, I start to

scale back my cardio and focus more on building muscle and strength. I’m never looking to be huge; I just want to tone up my muscle structure and improve my strength. It’s really a nice change instead of always training for speed and endurance. By March, I flip things back around and lean down for speed. It’s nice to switch things up. The reality is, just never quit trying to live the healthiest lifestyle you can. Remember to always love the skin you are in, no matter what shape or size, along with the imperfections we all have that make us so unique and beautiful

Making Way for New Face

The classic round diner front makes the Museum an architectural classic. The necessary preparations will be made to install a new facade to give the Museum a beautiful inviting look.

Entrance to 1938 Historic Building

Special attention will be given to the entrance of the Museum’s historic building, which dates back to 1938.

Become a Founding Donor Today!

The Graffiti USA Museum is more than half-way to our $ 8 million goal. Thank you. This work would not be possible without the generosity of our community. To complete the museum, we need to raise the remaining $3 million of our goal.

Founding donors will be permanently recognized in our Hall of Fame. You donation will help finish the Museum’s exhibit and event space, radio museum, education center, and more! Much of our work has been “in-kind” and has been donated. If you or your company want to be a part if this, please contact Carly Russell at contact@graffitiusamuseum.com We have special naming, large and custom donation opportunities. Please contact Chris Murphy at 209-534-1704 or chrism@spwg.com and we can meet ASAP. The time to bring this amazing Modesto celebration to life is now. Our community is made better by the amazing level of volunteerism, hard work, ideas and generous contributions. There are people that really stand out when it’s time to make a difference, not with a desire for recognition, but to get important things done and have a positive impact. American Legion Post 74 has chosen Evan Porges as its Citizen of the Year for 2023 and has created two new awards to be given annually – the Veteran of the Year and Community Service Hero of the Year. The 2023 Veteran of the Year is Birgit Fladager and the 2023 Community Service Hero of the Year is Chris Guptill. As Citizen of the Year in 2019, I was grateful that this recognition would inspire others and lead to more community involvement. We all hope to lead by example and encourage others. American Legion Post 74 began awarding a “Man of the Year” award in 1949. In the ensuing years, they have given our nearly 75 awards and changed the name to “Citizen of the Year” to better reflect the recipients. The Citizen of the Year dinner serves as a fundraiser for the local American Legion post and proceeds from the dinner support the Modesto 4th of July parade, the Veterans Day parade, Memorial Day activities at Lakewood Cemetery and on the 7th St Bridge, support of local veterans with disabilities, travel needs and funerals, as well as youth activities such as the Boys/Girls State program, Middle school patriot awards and the US Constitution oratorical contest. Evan, Birgit and Chris will be honored at the American Legion Post 74 Dinner on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at the Stanislaus Veterans Center. For tickets call Lynn Dickerson 916-662-4352

Losing a local legend

Modesto has some great local rockers. Our rock scene from the 70s to now had some illustrious people. Many of them lived like rockers and most of them gave so much to our community. Our friend John Shaw lost his tragic battle with cancer. It was sudden, abrupt and harsh and he was taken from us far too soon. John was always there for people, larger than life and was every bit the rocker you expected with his band the Whiskey Skulls. Now his wife Crissie is left to take over his graphics business and try to move on, no matter how hard it is. There will be a benefit celebration concert for John at Twin Rivers, Feb 17, noon-6. All Ages. Crissie is facing a long road and we can rally around her. Please support her Venmo so she can get help directly without the service fee. ALL AGES VIEW

BARGAIN VIEW Howdy 2024!

With New Year’s just hours behind us, some of the best moments have just made their goodbyes. New Year’s 2024 has yet to be more than an idea. To Ms. M, something so small as the idea can blossom into a simple start that allows one to reflect on the past, and focus on the future of what will come. The tradition of starting the New Year on the right foot is centuries old but longlasting. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as making your budget stretch into lasting fun. Here’s some way to save in the New Year. Poetry nourishes the soul. On January 9th, Most Poetry Center is hosting their Second Tuesday reading on Zoom. The event features Luke Johnson, author of Quiver, and also features poet Mariah Bosch, a Fresno State MFA graduate., with host Stella Beratlis The event will include a reading from featured poets, followed by an open mic. MOST invites everyone to enjoy the Second Tuesday Poetry reading. The event begins at 7 p.m. and is free. RSVP: https://www. mostpoetry.org/ Focusing on your health is one way of making a change. Exercise is a healthy way to benefit your health but it still can be fun. Join in the party at Elevate Yoga’s Cardio Dance Party of January 13th. Taught by dance instructors who have more than a

Titanic will be presented on January 21st by the Modesto Film Society. They will host a themed event, encouraging attendees to dress in historic 1912 attire and take a photo with other 1st class passengers at the showing of the film. Movie and nostalgia lovers alike will be transported to a different time and place and able to meet others. This unique glow-in-the-dark storytelling experience was the recipient of the prestigious Jim Henson Foundation Grant. The story features a famous scientist with magic powers that brings a friendly dinosaur to life.

I can’t believe that it is officially 2024! The air is filled with the promise of new beginnings, and for many, including myself, it’s the perfect time to set resolutions and goals that will shape the next chapter of our lives. Modesto is known for its strong sense of community, and I plan to contribute by volunteering and getting involved. Whether it’s participating in neighborhood clean-ups, supporting local businesses, or joining community events, I hope to be an active and positive force in the city. As this marks my last year in our beautiful city before I go off to college in the fall, I’m dedicated to staying actively involved, contributing whatever I can to make Modesto even more wonderful. Recognizing the importance of staying active for both mental and physical well-being, I have various ways to keep myself moving. One way I stay active is through working out at the gym, taking a hike, running, or dancing! If you’re looking to stay fit, there

are gyms scattered throughout the city—just find the one nearest to you! However, if the gym isn’t your scene, Modesto has many outdoor spaces perfect for a run or walk. Personally, I enjoy running on the Virginia Trail, a 4.2-mile stretch with plenty of shaded benches for rest. In this new year, my resolution is to stay active outdoors and soak in the sunshine daily. In 2024 I hope that our schools in Modesto continue to inspire kids to get involved. Whether that be through clubs, sports, or volunteer opportunities, I’m grateful to our schools for providing gender inclusivity. In 2023, several schools, including my own, Central Catholic, introduced their first allgirls flag football teams! This groundbreaking initiative not only expands the range of extracurricular activities available but also challenges traditional norms, sending a powerful message to young girls that they can do anything. It’s a remarkable addition to our school programs, and I’m very thankful for the strides being made in fostering an empowering educational environment in Modesto. Here’s to a year of positive change, growth, and continued community unity! Happy New year, Modesto!

All Ages will love this unique adventure. Show: 6:30 p.m. Tickets: $15-35. Info: https://www.galloarts.org

Restraint

By Mary Layton

The practice of Self-Restraint Several years ago I went to visit my Tai chi teacher who is a 3rd Generation Grandmaster of T’ai Chi. Upon entering his house I noticed a large Chinese calligraphy on the wall representing one of the most important principles of T’ai Chi : Self-Restraint. Next to the powerful looking character, was a poem written by Mr. Yip. When I asked my teacher what it meant he showed me an English translation of it. To make it more accessible I have changed its formal language to sound more like we talk today: “It is better to yield in order to achieve peace. Surrender your position to gain serenity. Keep a golden silence to avoid making enemies.

Practice precious restraint in order to deserve happiness. Give in a little and you will feel wonderfully at ease. Spare a few words and you will be free of worry. Restrain yourself and you will be happy as an angel.” This sure is wonderful advice. Restraining one’s emotions, desires, opinions and inclinations can be a remedy in resolving life’s challenges and brings about peace. Even in a crisis situation self-restraint makes me less impulsive, I take more time to think things over and then say or do the right thing. To walk away from a confrontation, to bow even when hurt or insulted takes strength. There are countless situations where this idea of self-restraint would be beneficial. It’s worth the try! I will make Self-Restraint my New Year’s resolution.
