Editor' s Letter

Welcome to the Autumn issue of Modern Mississauga!

We’ve got another terrific issue for you, including the best places to see the autumn colours in the city, the best pumpkin patches that are close to the city, how to beautify your kitchen, and of course, our jovial John Lewis. We have a conversation with Sauga 960 AM’s Randy Taylor, dig into four important modern vehicles, the Home Depot Canada primes us for the Holiday season and we’ve got worthy wine and whiskey recommendations for you.

Between Bill C-18’s implementation and the mass layoffs in September at Metroland, Mississauga’s media presence is in a precarious position. There’s a handful, if that, of remaining Mississauga media companies in operation compared to 2019 and yes, the pandemic impacted that. I ask that for the remaining local media outlets that you support them however possible. It’s challenging with Meta making our platforms with them obsolete but there’s still websites to visit and other social platforms to connect on.

For now, and as we’ve felt since we launched in the autumn of 2015, our entire existence is thanks to you, the reader, the supporter, the critic. Your support is valued, appreciated and today, is worth more than it’s ever been.

We’ll keep doing our best to represent Mississauga and hope that for those who’ve been with us, you’ll stay with us. For the new members of the Modern Mississauga community, we’re happy you’re here.

ENJOY AUTUMN COLOURS IN MISSISSAUGA

The lush, green foliage in Mississauga will, as it always does, transform into waves of glowing yellows, oranges and reds as autumn springs from summer. While it’s only a brief appearance for a few weeks, it’s worth admiring and appreciating.

Grab a coffee/tea from your favourite locally owned coffee shop/cafe, charge up and make space on your smartphone and explore the delightful outdoors of our city. Here are a few spots across Mississauga where fall foliage stands to offer the most plentiful bouquets of colour for your viewing pleasure.

MEADOWVALE CONSERVATION AREA

In the north side of the city, the Meadowvale Conservation is split in two by the Credit River with a bridge connecting the two halves. The west side of the Meadowvale Conservation area features ample multi-use trails that lead into pockets of forested areas brimming with the fiery colours of this time of the year. Make sure to bring a camera and snap a few pictures for keepsakes of the trip.

ERINDALE PARK

This 222-acre park is a gargantuan greenbelt situated near the intersection of Dundas Street West and Mississauga Road. It’s the largest park in the city and it features the David J. Culham Trail, spilling through heavily-forested areas that provide majestic views of the Credit River and ravines. It is a particularly sublime trail during the autumn and accessible to hikers, joggers, cyclists and cross-country skiers alike.

RIVERWOOD CONSERVANCY

Nature, history and art blend together to create the peaceful and memorable outdoor setting that is Riverwood in central Mississauga. Riverwood extends north from Burnhamthorpe Road West to Highway 403. This 150 acre urban oasis features more than 475 species of plants and animals, multiple scenic woodland trails and beautiful gardens that are a spectacular sight to the eye any time of the year, but even more so when the fall colours take over.

RATTRAY MARSH

Located on Lake Ontario in South Mississauga, Rattray Marsh Conservation Area is a perfect location to congregate at in order to witness the dazzling autumn scenery. The various trails, elevated pathways and boardwalks are bordered, on both sides, by immense trees. By venturing out and into Rattray Marsh — visitors can get a highly serene experience with nature in one of the city’s most unique environmental settings.

STREETSVILLE MEMORIAL PARK

With the majestic Credit River by your side, enjoy the beauty of Streetsville’s Memorial Park trails. Follow the Culham Trail and enjoy serenity and bursts of autumn’s finest colours. Whether it’s with family, friends, or a solo serenity, this part of Mississauga makes you forget, even temporarily, that the city is mostly paved and littered with condo towers.

With autumn’s arrival, pumpkin season is here. The rich aroma of warm pumpkin pie, sipping on pumpkin spiced lattes and decorating our orange gourds for Halloween are all part of the season. Visiting local farms to pick your own pumpkin, capturing photos and video and having a memorable time with family and friends helps round out these excellent experiences.

Whether you’re looking for family-friendly day trips, a solo outing, spending time with friends or date ideas, these fun pumpkin farms near Mississauga are prime for the picking!

CHUDLEIGH’S FARM

One of the best pumpkin farms near Mississauga is Chudleigh’s Farm. Located in Milton, they’re best known for their massive apple orchard but they also have a pumpkin patch where you can pick your own. In addition to pumpkin and apple picking, there’s a large café and bakery. The farm boasts a large play area with slides and lookouts for the kids.

Get your favourite fall sweater and enjoy these autumn experiences, all within around an hour from Mississauga.

to do and attractions on their 148 acres. Situated a touch over an hour east of Mississauga, this farm provides plenty of picking opportunities like pumpkins, apples, strawberries and asparagus. Other attractions include sunflower fields, a play land and Harvest Festival. One of the biggest highlights at Pingle’s is their market that sells some fun and tasty food.

ROUND THE BEND FARM

Just over an hour north of Mississauga is a another great working farm that is open to visitors during the fall season. Round the Bend Farm has a variety of pumpkins to choose from. Take the wagon ride into the field to pick your own. Then head off into the straw and corn maze to test your skills. The farm also has farm animals you can feed and a market shop full of fresh, local produce.

DOWNEY’S FARM MARKET

ALBION ORCHARDS

Noted by the Food Network as one of the top apple orchards in Canada, Albion Orchards also has a pumpkin patch. While smaller than previous years, you’ll find a voluptuous orange beauty that’s perfect for your front porch. Located in nearby Caledon, visitors can enjoy apple picking as well as pick up items from their country store, which sells everything from fresh baked pies to gift ideas.

ANDREWS’ SCENIC ACRES

Plus, there’s a nature trail through the forest and an array of farm animals to meet.

DIXIE ORCHARDS

Hop aboard for a wagon ride into the pumpkin patch at Dixie Orchards. This sprawling farm is located approximately 30 minutes north of Mississauga and is fun for the whole family. Along with pick-your-own pumpkins, they have apples and hazelnuts. Dixie Orchards also features a corn maze and sunflower fields to wander. Plus, don’t forget to browse their porch market to purchase some delicious baked goods before you leave.

As Durham Region’s most famous farm, Pingle’s has a tractor full of fun things

In the heart of Caledon is one of the best pumpkin farms in Ontario. Downey’s Farm is a popular spot in the fall to find the best pumpkins. The farm runs an annual Pumpkinfest that features plenty of fun activities for children and adults. There’s a massive corn maze and large farmthemed play area. In their renovated dairy barn, you’ll find a market selling all sorts of Ontario produce as well as fresh baked goods. Be sure to grab some of their famous pumpkin donuts to bring home

KNOX’S PUMPKIN FARM

Thousands of pumpkins fill the fields at Knox’s Pumpkin Farm, only an hour east of Mississauga.This historic Durham Region farm dates to 1832. Open seasonally, from late September to Halloween, its pumpkin patch offers picture-perfect

Perched along the Niagara Escarpment in neighbouring Milton is a picturesque farm full of pick your own opportunities. Andrews’ Scenic Acres is home to fields of flowers and fruit like strawberries and blueberries to pick. In the fall, visitors will enjoy one of the prettiest places to pick your own pumpkin in Ontario. The farm features walking trails, fun photo-ops and a winery.

CHAPPELL FARMS

Close to Lake Simcoe and only 90 minutes away is a nearly 200-yearold farm that offers pick-your-own pumpkins and plenty of fun activities for families in the fall. Visit Chappell Farms for their Fall Festival that runs from late September to Halloween. During the festival visitors can explore the corn maze, visit the animals, and browse the pumpkin patch. The kids will love the magic shows, tricycle track and wagon rides.

Is there a future for media

For Canada’s seventh largest city, there’s a disproportionate number of media outlets. I count three, including Modern Mississauga Media and yes, I still count the Mississauga News despite Metroland filing for bankruptcy as the News will carry on in digital format only.

Bill C-18 has rendered two of the three Facebook pages blank spaces, with Modern Mississauga’s still able to post and share images. If I post anything from the website, I get the “In response to Canadian government legislation, news content can’t be shared” message. Odd, since I’m not a news outlet but the blanket sadly envelopes me. I’ve found a workaround for sharing the community content but digging into the analytics since the ban was implemented is an exercise in routine that yields plummeting points. Instagram, another Meta property, is blocking news links.

Over in the land of Twitter/X, on September 19th, its owner said there’ll be a “small monthly fee” to be implemented soon for all users in an effort to weed out the fake/bot accounts. That’s another restriction on consumption of information as not everyone can or wants to join the subscription model.

For all the trouble with alleged spying (it’s probably true but hey) via TikTok, it seems to be the only social platform remaining that lets news links be published. There’s a reduction in the popular lip

synching and a bolstering of news items, clips, current events, etc., from Canadian media outlets. It’s working, or at least so say the views/likes/comments on these types of videos.

There’s good ol’ YouTube but it seems that consumers want their news in small bites opposed to long form video. There’s their “Shorts” 60 second vertical video but YouTube hasn’t been a leading source for quick news hits.

The tried and true, dare I say “old school” websites are still anchoring media outlets but that requires people to seek it out instead of it coming directly to their phones/laptops/tablets. I won’t say that we’ve become “lazy” in our consumption of information. Instead, we’ve become nearly thoroughly accustomed to it being delivered to us, tailor-made to our specifications. After social media platforms have spent trillions of dollars and years conditioning us one way, it’s proving to be a challenge to have us swim upstream.

The discontinuation of the News in print was inevitable; I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did. It’s the same reason why I decided to stop printing physical copies of the magazine in January 2020. What’s the reason? Dramatically rising costs (paper, ink, Canada Post) and decreased interest in physical copies. Add in digital traffic seeing strong sustained growth

and I sometimes wonder if Modern Mississauga Media would still be here if I dug my heels in and kept producing a product in such steep decline.

So where does that leave media in Mississauga now? Fragile, precarious and opportunistic. Even before I opened up shop and the “in” media company launched, Mississauga was thin on media; it was the News and a heaping handful of others. The point being this isn’t a “new” situation for the city. What makes this different is that there’s no handful anymore.

The fragility comes from the uncertainty of what’s next. Bill C-18 shows no sign of resolve and every day that passes sees the canyon for negotiations and a solution widen. It’s the possibility of any one of us being next. It’s not having what’s happening in our community be shared to the masses. It’s the heightened risk of becoming a city with over 700,000 people having a single media outlet.

The precariousness brings slight optimism for some as it includes chance. And that chance would be that Bill C-18 is reversed through a scenario where both sides benefit. There could also be new media outlets that arise. These are low-chance but still some-chance ideas. It’s good to have hope as long as there’s a blend of reality.

The opportunistic side, which is how I’ve approached it, pushes us to improve, find different forward paths and become increasingly creative. There are still ways to create “news” content and have it pushed out, despite what’s happening. Video, precise paragraphs vs. one-liners-liners, live social media broadcasts, infographics, collaborations and shared content from other social platforms are a few ways to be heard and seen.

As a city, we’re not where we used to be on the media landscape. We’re down but certainly not out. I implore you to support the remaining Mississauga media outlets. Visit websites, sign up for newsletters, comment and respectfully be a part of the conversation. There’s too much good news, positivity and impactful stories that are either being told or on the verge of being told; it’s having the audience to receive it that completes the connection.

With that, I thank you for reading, thank you for the support and hope that you share my optimism that media in Mississauga will remain a valuable structure along the skyline of our city.

This may sound crazy to someone who's lived their entire life in Mississauga, but in reality, Meadowvale does not extend beyond the borders of Ninth Line, Mavis Road, Highway 407 and Britannia Road. In fact, many people around the world have never even heard of Meadowvale! Keep that in mind the next time you're passing through, and ask yourself this: how deranged does your city have to be to have a neighbourhood called "Lisgar"?

Living in Mississauga, it's easy to believe that Sam McDadi is an omnipresent, benevolent deity presiding over our mortal realm from behind an infinite network of mystical portals. But let me share a hard truth with you: those socalled "portals" are nothing more than billboards, for sale signs, and bus stop advertisements. And have you seen the one where he's hanging out with multiple versions of himself? He can't really do that. It's just Photoshop. I've always considered Sam McDadi a mass delusion, a figment of Mississauga's collective imagination. Consider: have you, or has anyone you know, actually met Sam McDadi? Isn't it more likely you just made him up?

CUISINE

You can't drive two blocks in Mississauga without coming across a "Hakka" restaurant. Described as Chinese cuisine tuned to Indian tastes, it's exactly the sort of profane concoction that only a Mississaugan could come up with. Chow mein, but make it butter chicken? Try ordering that in literally any other location on Earth and watch how fast you’re banned from the premises.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME

Spring forward? Fall back? Never heard of this nonsense until I moved to Mississauga.

My son is starting Grade 4 next year. I've been told he'll be learning "French," a language spoken in “France,” the Canadian province of “Quebec,” and many other alleged places around the world. I assure you this language does not exist anywhere except Mississauga. I’m actually a bit concerned that the Ministry of Education was willing to grant Mississauga such a broad exception to the provincial curriculum. Instead of French, young Mississaugans should be learning something useful, like Italian.

YELLOW LIGHTS

When I started driving in Mississauga, I noticed something really strange: instead of flashing green to red, traffic lights had this confusing yellow stage in between. It took a few accidents before a kind parole officer explained to me that the yellow light means "slow down." But that's what you're supposed to do when you see a red light, isn't it? You know, on the way to a full stop? Seems unnecessary, but you do you, Mississauga.

SOFAS

I moved to Mississauga for university, but missed the deadline to apply for on-campus residence. Amazingly, I managed to find a fully furnished basement apartment at Burnhamthorpe and Wolfedale. Imagine my surprise when the landlord opened the door and I saw this weird, long chair taking up half the living room. She called it a "sofa" and insisted that it was totally normal. Since then, every Mississaugan I've ever met has done the same. I won't lie... the idea has grown on me. Heck, I even bought a sofa of my own, years later. But make no mistake: as comfortable as they can be, there's nothing "normal" about having a small bed bent at 90 degrees in the middle of your house.

DANK CHARLES

Unlike Sam McDadi, Dank Charles is very real. His relentless campaign of mischief and grief would make anyone assume that other cities are also haunted by unkillable trickster figures. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Dank Charles is as Mississauga as piccadilly pie and twice as nasty. And now that developers are intruding on the last vestiges of his natural habitat, it's only going to get worse. In some ways, this is the natural consequence of Mississauga's long history of suburban sprawl. So if you wake up one day to find that "Horny Ol' Chuck" has stolen your mail, you have no one to blame but yourself.

DEPRESSION

Ever feel like you're the only one who feels the way you do— sad, broke, unloved? Well, statistically speaking, you are. That's because depression was invented in Mississauga. In the outside world, there is no unhappiness or strife. People work four days a week, housing is affordable, and preventable diseases are a thing of the past. In some places, like Milton, they have even conquered death itself. It's impossible to know what keeps us rooted in this modern Tartarus—perhaps nostalgia, perhaps a shaman's curse, perhaps the magnetic vibes of Hazel McCallion's ghost. Whatever it is, depression is just one of those many things that makes Mississauga "Mississauga"!

With the shift to self checkout, mobile ordering and amazon of everything what does Customer Service look like now? What makes you feel like it’s the little bit extra that makes you go out of your way to be somewhere?

I will admit I love a mobile ordering feature, swooping in to grab it and go often suits my overcommitted lifestyle. When those brands ask me to review my experience they still ask if the staff made an effort to get to know me. Why do they ask that? What does it matter to customer behaviour?

There is a trusted phrase that a customer who has a problem and that problem is resolved will be far more loyal. So why the focus on getting to know your customers? Because that feeling of being known can also make a difference. Randy Taylor has been an icon on GTA airwaves over the past 25 years. His message is simple –give people the voice and they will find the solutions to help make this country better. Randy now brings his engaging and empowering new show to Sauga960AM starting September 11 –weekdays 7-9am.

PRAVEEN AMIRTHARAJ: When did you first get interested in politics?

RANDY TAYLOR: I was very young. My earliest memory of politics was of President Kennedy and at his inauguration when he said, “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country”. I felt moved and was triggered so young to believe great leaders can inspire an entire nation to rise up. His words inspired an entire nation to know they were a part of it. I’ve never forgotten those words. To this day I still believe the right person can change the trajectory of our country for the better and allow us to one day say, “Do you see that? We made it better”.

PA:  Why do you have some faith in people? Or do you ?

RT:  I have always known my greatest asset is my belief in others. In my other career as a speaker and behavioural expert, I can stand on stage in a room of a thousand people and see identical potential in every one of them. This notion that the world picks the winners and losers is not true. It is the very impetus that holds people back. When we believe our potential is unlimited. My hope with this show is to convince as many people as I can to believe in our ability to be a part of the solution and hold elected officials to account and use our vote to demand just that.

PA:  If you weren’t on the radio, what would we find you doing these days ?

RT:  Speaking, training, and coaching through my company Taylormadeleadership. Like radio, I am very passionate about doing this work. My belief is that my job is to hold up the mirror and convince as many people as I can what they are truly capable of. You would find me doing that and being with a family I never could have imagined having, being on my boat and out in nature.

PA:  You ran as a political candidate previously, what did that experience teach you ?

RT:  It taught me how incredible people are and that the hope for honesty and hard work

and striving to make the country better by our political leaders is so strong. When I ran, within 2 weeks of the nomination, 300 volunteers joined my campaign and helped to raise $65,000 for no other reason than they wanted to make the country better. I will never forget that experience. It gave me unlimited faith that we always need to believe in each other.

PA:  Who inspires you and why ?

RT:  There would be too many people to list them all. In the world of personal development Jim Rohn who was Anthony Robbin's mentor. In life, my wife who has become Canada’s top nutritionist, runs a very busy practice, writes books and has poured herself into raising two of the most incredible children. In radio, Mike Cooper who was my mentor and friend early on. Martin Luther King, John Kennedy and others and my guidance counsellor Mr. Gretzinger who lit a spark in me the day I left high school at age 16 when he told me on my way out the door, “Randy, I want you to know, where you are now has nothing to do with where you can go”. He was right for us all.

PA:  What do you want listeners to take away with the new Randy Taylor Show ?

RT:  That they can play a big role in the direction of this country. My show will be focused on bringing important topics forward every day, and then take calls from

my listeners to know they will be heard. We so badly need to change how we act and interact about the issues facing this nation. We need to get away from simply shouting and pointing fingers about what’s wrong. We need to provide solutions and that is the basis of what my show will be about.

PA:  Are you optimistic about Canada’s future and the GTA’s role in shaping that future?

RT:  We do live in an incredible country that has so much promise, but people need to get involved. Elected officials need to be held to account and right now they are not. It’s up to us all to do that.

RT:  It’s impossible to narrow it down to 3 because music, (rock, country, classical, pop, alternative) but here goes.

Dive into Nova Scotia's Tidal Bay

While wine touring in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley this summer, I watched as a visitor burst into a tasting room exclaiming, “I had no idea we could wine tour here! We’re having such a good time!” I glanced across the counter with my eyebrows raised, and the associate nodded. “It happens all the time,” she said.

Is wine touring in Nova Scotia really such as well-kept secret? It shouldn’t be: the Annapolis Valley is a white wine lover’s paradise. From dry or fruity stills to worldclass and effervescent sparklings, there’s a fascinating world of wine here to explore. And you’ll find it amid an idyllic setting of rolling hills lined with expansive vineyards, big red barns and roadside farm stands, and historic views overlooking the Bay of Fundy.

If you’re looking for a place to start, check out the provincial signature. Tidal Bay is Nova Scotia’s appellation wine, its answer to Champagne or Bordeaux. It’s a blend that’s unique to Nova Scotia and designed to showcase its best to the world.

To qualify as a Tidal Bay, there’s a long list of attributes a wine needs to meet. There are more than 20 varietals that qualify for use in a Tidal Bay wine, but the first 51% must be one or more of l’Acadie Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Vidal, or Geisenheim. These four varietals are hardy hybrids that are characteristic of the region and well-suited to Nova Scotia’s challenging winter conditions. Having an extensive list to select from gives each winery a palette for creativity and individual expression, though a Tidal Bay wine should have a flavour profile of “lively fresh green fruit, dynamic acidity, and characteristic minerality,” according to the appellation guidelines.

A Tidal Bay must be off-dry, and it needs to be relatively light: it can’t exceed 11% in alcohol content. All the grapes used must be grown in Nova Scotia. And, naturally, any wine wearing a Tidal Bay label needs to pair well with seafood.

Each vintage is judged for suitability by a blind tasting panel. For the past two years, 14 wineries have submitted successful entries. Four of those are reviewed below, each purchased directly from the wineries during this summer’s visits.

If you can’t get to Nova Scotia yourself anytime soon, there’s one bottle you might be able to hunt down at the LCBO, and all these wines can be shipped by the wineries across the country via Canada Post. Note that shipping costs are not included below. Some

wineries won’t ship during the winter months due to a risk the bottles will freeze, so get your orders in before the snow flies.

BENJAMIN BRIDGE 2022 TIDAL BAY

This one of the rare Tidal Bay wines you’ll occasionally find at the LCBO. Produced by one of the top wineries in the Gaspereau Valley adjacent to the Annapolis Valley, this example is made from l’Acadie Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Riesling, and Geisenheim, with an alcohol content of 10%. It pours with a crisp pale yellow colour and aromas of pithy lemon peel, wet stone, and lightly floral notes. With plenty of zingy lemon on the palate accented by a hint of melon, plus a slight pinch of sea salt from its local wild fermentation, this Tidal Bay is refreshing and only slightly offdry. Benjamin Bridge’s Tidal Bay would stand up well to heavier seafood dishes. Consider classic fish and chips, where it would cut through the grease, or a creamy chowder with crusty bread that will let you extend its season well into the cooler months. Score: 8/10.

DOMAINE DE GRAND PRÉ 2022 TIDAL BAY

Domaine de Grand Pré is named for the Landscape of Grand Pré UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s immediately adjacent to its vineyards. Take a leisurely stroll through the vineyards to a scenic lookout over this historic farmland, reclaimed from the sea floor centuries ago by the Acadians. Once you’re back to the wine, you’ll find Domaine de Grand Pré’s Tidal Bay to be a blend of l'Acadie Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, Ortega, and New York Muscat, with an alcohol content of 11%. It starts with inviting aromas of peach and sweet blossoms. Layers of citrus and peach on the palate give way to a long and pleasantly tart grapefruit finish. Try it a plate of Nova Scotia’s

famously rich steamed lobster with drawn butter. Score: 8.5/10.

MERCATOR VINEYARDS 2021 TIDAL BAY

$24.79 for 750 mL, direct from mercatorwine.ca

If you haven’t heard of Mercator, perhaps you’ve heard of Jost. Those two wineries, plus Gaspereau Vineyards, are owned by Devonian Coast Vineyards, and each winery in the family is permitted to produce to its own signature style. Mercator’s format is modern, premium interpretations, which comes across elegantly in this Tidal Bay, winner of the 2022 Lieutenant Governor’s Award. L’Acadie Blanc, Riesling, New York Muscat, Chardonnay, and Petite Milo go into this blend, resulting in an alcohol content of 11%. It’s a slightly deeper yellow in the glass than the rest of these offerings, while the nose offers lemon and apple with a hint of richness. This follows through with flavours of creamy lemon curd alongside bright apple and lightly floral notes, creating a surprisingly complex palate. It’s beautifully smooth and easy drinking with low acidity. A milder dish will let this wine’s unique flavours shine. Consider pairing it with cod cakes and a green salad, or a light scallop and green pea risotto. Score: 9/10.

L’ACADIE VINEYARDS 2022 TIDAL BAY

$21.57 for 750 mL, direct from

For this unique Tidal Bay, l’Acadie Vineyards has leaned into the grape that gives the winery its name by producing it entirely from the l’Acadie Blanc varietal. But how can it still qualify under the appellation rules that require Tidal Bay to be a blend? Great question: the grapes are picked from different vineyards at different times, with each harvest seeking the ideal expression of its specific terroir. As a bonus, l’Acadie’s Tidal Bay also happens to be organic and vegan. On a whole, the l’Acadie Blanc grape is known for its citrus and grass notes and distinct minerality, all of which shine through here in this wine with 11% alcohol. It has a paler yellow colour, another hallmark of l’Acadie Blanc, with distinct mineral aromas along with freshly cut herbs. The palate offers a barely off-dry and refreshing melange of citrus and wet stone with a hint of saline and a tropical undertone. Because it’s more savoury than most, this example would pair well with shellfish such as freshly shucked oysters or mussels with a delicate cream sauce. Score: 8/10.

Wonderful Whiskeys3

I’ll start by saying that the world of whiskey doesn’t have to be complicated. Yes, there are a plethora of types and styles worldwide but in the end, consume what excites you, what taste’s good to you and what makes you happy. Your tastes can change and you can like/dislike any combination of brands. Here, I’ll showcase three different ones; one from Lincoln, Ontario in the Niagara Region and two from Scotland’s Glenfiddich.

DILLON’S SINGLE GRAIN RYE WHISKY

From the Dillon’s distillery in the Niagara Region, this single grain rye whisky is crafted using 100% Ontario rye and aged for four years in new Ontario oak, new American oak & first fill bourbon casks. It really is a grain-to-glass product. There’s no barley, wheat, or corn and distilled one batch at a time in pot stills and free of flavourings and colourings were ever added. This is simply a beautiful whisky. Plus, it won silver at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and silver at the 2022 Whiskies of the World Awards.

GLENFIDDICH 14 YEAR OLD

BOURBON BARREL RESERVE

This 14-year-old single malt scotch the whiskey features tasting notes of woody spices and ripe summer fruit. Additionally, scents of baked apple, malt and vanilla lead to flavours of caramel, char and baking spice. The finish features a delicious dark chocolate note. As the name states, it’s aged fourteen years in ex-bourbon barrels and then finished off in new charred American oak. Glenfiddich’s Bourbon Barrel 14 is an ideal pairing for a Lavender Gold Rush cocktail, neat or on ice.

GLENFIDDICH 15 YEAR OLD SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY SOLERA RESERVE
