Editor's Letter Welcome to the Early Summer issue of Mississauga’s magazine!
As we transition into summer, there’s plenty to see and do in our city, as is the the topic of the feature article. Travel is a hot ticket item and there are plenty of travel pieces, from the Bay of Quinte, lighthouse day trips, Winnipeg and Oregon. We dig into Mississauga’s new music strategy, showcase four popular new cars and show you how to boost your BBQ game. John Lewis continues to entertain us, there’s a summer movie feature and we sit down with local celebrity Tania Kolar to learn more about her. Saving money during summer at home is important so there’s a piece on that, along with nine outdoor apps to enhance your outdoor experience. We double up on the Bay of Quinte by showcasing their wonderful wines, Malton’s Canada Day celebrations are back and our Natalie Hart digs deep into what apathy is. As Summer finally arrives, a lot of people are going to be gearing up for the opportunity to go outdoors and do all the things they love. Hiking, swimming, offroading, racing and most importantly, seeing all the blockbusters. The summer movie season is here and after two years of people avoiding the theatres, it’s shaping up to be a big one! If you’re a movie buff like me, that’s pretty exciting. But if you only have time to see a few movies this summer on account of all the other fun things you’ve got planned, let me help you narrow down the list a little bit. Here are the Top 5 biggest releases coming out in the summer of 2022!
5: Jurassic World: Dominion (June 10th)
Number 5 is a movie that I wasn’t quite sure where to rank. Like a lot of you, I grew up with the Jurassic Park franchise and while the Jurassic World films are fine, I don’t think they hold the same wonder they used to. That said, Dominion certainly seems determined to change that with new dinosaurs and old cast members. Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern return alongside Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard for what looks like it’ll be one last grand hurrah for the Jurassic Era.
4: Halloween Ends (October 14th)
The thirteenth movie and the sequel to Halloween Kills, Michael Meyers is back, alongside Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode for a final showdown. While I’m not much into slasher movies, this one absolutely has my attention and seems like it’s going to be an absolute thrill ride.

e cinema... 3: Top Gun: Maverick (May 27th)
The long awaited sequel to 1986’s Top Gun, Tom Cruise returns as Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell to train a new group of Top Gun graduates. Say what you want about Tom Cruise, but he’s always fun to watch and this movie looks like no exception!
2: Bullet Train (July 29)
It’s been a while since I’ve seen a trailer for a movie that had me on the edge of my seat, but Bullet Train looks like the sort of thrill ride that will still have people talking a few years from now. Brad Pitt stars as an assassin trying to recover a briefcase from a train heading from Japan to Kyoto. This movie promises all sorts of pulse pounding fight scenes and I am here for it!
1: Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love & Thunder and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (May 6th, July 8th, November 11th) I think it goes without saying that the MCU is a cinematic juggernaut. With three films coming out this year, they could easily dominate this list. But with jaw dropping visuals and a chance to see the continuing adventures of characters we know and love like Thor, Doctor Strange and the people of Wakanda, I think it’s safe to say that these movies will be the ones people won’t want to miss.

MISSISSAUGA HITS THE STAGE WITH THEIR
INAUGURAL MUSIC STRATEGY On June 1st, the City of Mississauga Creating a favourable environment for live music: shared its first-ever Music Strategy: make the city an attractive place for live music 2022-2026, identifying 32 key actions events, festivals and music venues – where artists to support the growth and development choose to perform and businesses operate of Mississauga’s music industry. Supporting underrepresented “Mississauga is working to put our name on the people and groups: map as a ‘Music City’, and this strategy is a big step forward in helping us achieve it. Our city is home to world-class, diverse talent and excellent live music, positioning us in an optimal place for growth, tourism, and job creation,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “We have a unique opportunity in front of us to become an internationally-recognized incubator for musical talent and a national hub for music events and festivals. I’m so thrilled to support this strategy as we pave the way towards becoming a recognized destination for the music industry and start live performances and events once again.” The Music Strategy advances recommendations from the City’s approved Culture Master Plan, Creative Industries Strategy and Economic Recovery Plan – Creative Industries. These documents highlight the need for targeted actions to support Mississauga’s growing music sector. The strategy proposes 13 recommendations and 32 actions over the next five years and includes plans for economic recovery for musicians and businesses emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic. Key points include:
Amplifying Mississauga’s artists:
create employment, professional development and promotional opportunities within and beyond Mississauga’s borders
improve equity and inclusion within the City’s music sector, using the power of music to build a strong and resilient community
Celebrating Mississauga’s history and success:
recognize the achievements of local musicians, industry leaders and institutions to maximize tourism potential and raise the profile of Mississauga’s music sector In July 2019, the City made a commitment to grow and support its music sector outlined in its Creative Industries Strategy by opening its Music Office, which included hiring full-time staff dedicated to sector development. The framework of the strategy was developed with significant community and sector input which included: · Stakeholder and community engagement sessions · Music strategy survey · Hosting internal stakeholder and music industry consultations The City’s Music Strategy will be going to Council on June 8 for approval and hopefully, it passes unanimously.

I recently spent a weekend in Winnipeg and while not my first time there, it was my most memorable. Their food scene is one of the best in the country, the attractions are abundant and there’s an approachable and exciting vibe that rings around the city. This arts and culture hub blends a variety of food and drink, over 40 unique retailers and a buzz of excitement. Spanning 20 square blocks, everything is a 10-ish minute walk, making it convenient and approachable. There are live events, an enticing common area and interestingly, it’s a National Historic Site, oozing with character and charisma. There’s a large exhibit dedicated to polar bears (fitting as Churchill, MB is the polar bear capital of the world) along with a new dinosaur exhibit, animals of Asia, a butterfly garden, a grasslands and Boreal forest area, and much more. Housing over 24,000 works, this tapestry of collections blends indoor space with a sculpture garden and a spectacular three-storey glass vault filled with thousands of Inuit carvings. WHERE TO EAT Hargrave Street Market is conveniently located in the Exchange District and the food choices are plentiful! Winnipeg has a fantastic food scene and adds the exclamation point to it. With nearly 10 different options, I opted for Yard Burger and loved the 314 chicken burger and an order of hot wings. Other restaurants include Gusto’s North, The Good Fight Tacos, Saburo (ramen and donburi,) Fools & Horses coffee, Miss Browns Brunch Cafe, Rose Bar (craft cocktail heaven,) and Lake of the Woods Brewing Company. There are zero bad options here - check them out at hargravestmarket.com For breakfast, also in the Exchange District, Clementine Cafe was my favourite spot. Based on the lineup when I got there, it’s a lot of peoples favourite spot! Don’t let the long line deter you as there’s a quick table turnover. The open concept spot is brimming with atmosphere and their simple menu is full of pleasers. I indulged in the fabulous fried chicken on toast and a side of fabulous fried potatoes and the pictures barely do it justice. Peruse their menu at clementinewinnipeg.com The Forks Market, which has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years, boasts nearly 30 dining options. This former abandoned railyard where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet is now a prime spot for food and fun. As I love puns, that’s how I chose my lunch spot; Weinerpeg, home of the natural ingredient hot dog, house-made soda and fresh fries. Wrapping up lunch brought me to the Neon Cone ice cream shop, where I made quick work of my peanut butter flurry. A solid dinner option comes via Nonsuch Brewing, where they create Belgian style beer with
spring water. Boasting a variety of flavours, there’s something for most peoples tastes and on the food side, their charcuterie board is a must-have, along with their house-made bread and mouthwatering hand-made chips. See what they’re brewing at nonsuch.beer Patent 5 Distillery is around the corner from Nonsuch and it’s the prime spot for a nightcap, and yes, they do have small selection of food if you’re peckish. Their premium spirits and craft cocktails are impressive and award-winning, and made from locally-sourced materials. I opted for the flight of classic gins, which was a tasty way to wrap up my evening. Check out their website, patent5.ca A quick 10 minute drive south brings you to Oxbow, a new hotspot specializing in local ingredients and natural wines. With a menu planted in shareable plates, my dinner guest and I made all the right choices, which included oysters, Brussel sprouts, cavatelli, and the flank steak, with the dark chocolate tart for dessert. Their wine and spirits selection are wide, and the service is top notch, with our waiter being knowledgeable and helpful to get us exactly what we wanted drink-wise. For more, visit oxbowwpg.ca
WHERE TO STAY On the banks of winding Red River is the boutique Mere Hotel, both upscale and inviting. Summer is here and that means road trip season is in full swing! We decided that our first seasonal adventure for 2022 would be a couple of hours east of the city to the beautiful Bay of Quinte region. Over a few days and few hundred kilometres, we explored the region, found adventure, created memories, deliciously dined, stumbled upon gems, and thoroughly enjoyed our time together. Here’s what we did, where we did it and encourage you to experience the area for yourself sooner than later.

BRIGHTON Presqu'ile Provincial Park. On the shores of Lake Ontario is picturesque Presqu'ile Provincial Park, blending 2km of beaches, nearly 20 km of trails, over 300 car camping sites and the marvellous marsh boardwalk trail that lets you access a protected marsh. It’s also home to a 69 foot high lighthouse built in 1840 and is the second oldest operating lighthouse in Ontario. The drive through the park is spectacular as it weaves through heavily wooded areas and along the shore. It’s also a prime destination for observing bird migration and whether you're happier on land or in the water, this popular park has something for nearly everyone. Downtown Brighton. Brighton is the closest town to Presqu’ile, and it’s the first you encounter in the Bay of Quinte region when approaching from the west. Both the town and its main shopping district are small relative to others nearby, but that only adds to the charm. A stroll through Willow Lifestyle Boutique reveals a well-curated selection of women’s clothing and accessories, many of which are made in Canada, set among specialty soaps and nature-themed artwork and wall hangings. A treat from the ice cream stand outside would hit the spot on warmer days. If caffeine is in order, head across the street to Lola’s Café for a wide selection of beverages and treats, including tasty gluten-free and vegan options.
QUINTE WEST The Bleasdell Boulder Conservation Area. The Bleasdell Boulder Conservation Area houses one of North America’s most sizeable known glacial erratics, with an estimated age of over 2 billion years. It’s less than a five minute walk from the entrance and is ideal for those looking for a leisurely and peaceful walk/hike in the woods. Interestingly, on the path to the left of the boulder, we happened upon an expressive “rock snake” created by a family, which has been generously added to by the community and contains hundreds of hand-painted rocks with various positive images and messages.

National Air Force Museum. Spanning over 16 acres and eclipsing 75,000 square feet, the majestic National Air Force Museum is a spectacular slight, with over 30 aircraft on display inside and out. Walk back in time and learn about various types of aircrafts, their history and significance to the Canadian Air Force. Impressively, the hangar you walk into was built around the massive Halifax to house it and is a key piece in the broad collection of Canadian aviation history. With its rich history, it’s easy to see why many visitors flock here. Trent-Severn Waterway. This historic waterway, operated by Parks Canada as a national historic site, creates a canal route for recreational boating that spans 386 kilometres from Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. Boats enter the waterway from the west by passing through the Murray Canal, which connects Lake Ontario to the Bay of Quinte, and then entering Lock 1 in Quinte West. While there are more involved locks further along in the system, there’s a tranquil simplicity to whiling away an hour or so at this single lock watching the boats go by. Bring a picnic lunch and let the kids delight in learning how the lock works as they watch it in action. Downtown Quinte West. We found something to love in every
town we visited, but for downtown areas, it was Quinte West that stole our hearts. The Grind and Vine is a hip café that, as the name suggests, serves wine in the afternoons and coffee all day to please all palates. There are some amazing treats here as well, including for special diets: we’ll absolutely go out of our way to have the glutenfree and vegan peanut butter chocolate tart again! Across the street, Pieces Board Game Café was a standout addition to our afternoon, where we enjoyed intensely competitive games of giant Connect Four and giant Jenga. We missed dining at Tomasso’s Italian Grille, which has a riverfront patio that’s highly recommended, and there’s a Harry Potter-themed shop called The Geek Shack whose opening hours never quite aligned with our visits. But a stroll along the river makes for a great way to end the day, or you can start it with a farmers’ market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from May to October.

Fina Vista Farm e-bike tour and Sager Conservation Area. Regardless of your cycling proficiency, the Fina Vista Farm e-bike tour, at the north east edge of Quinte West, provides a wonderful outdoor adventure through the Oak Hills region. Safely pedalling on retro-styled electric bicycles along winding roads, farms and water views with an experienced guide lets you enjoy the country air and enjoy the area from a unique perspective. Our tour guide and co-owner, Ernie, was friendly, informative and ensured our group was well-versed in how our e-bikes operated, which led to a thoroughly enjoyable ride. Midway through the two-hour ride, we stopped at Sager Conservation Area and took a short 10 minute walk through a cleared trail to soak in the aerial views from the 30 foot high lookout tower. There’s signage on all four sides letting you know where and what you’re looking at and while the nearly 50-step climb may seem daunting, the reward is worth it.
BELLEVILLE Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Belleville. To recharge and relax between adventures, the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Belleville was where we called home during our Bay of Quinte experience. Our King Studio suite was spacious, the bed quite comfortable with enough pillows for both of us, and there’s a desk to get caught up on work between attractions and meals. Conveniently located off the 401, this recently-built lodging Includes are free wi-fi and parking, a hot breakfast, a pool and other common amenities to make your stay enjoyable. Zwick's Centennial Park. The best reason to visit the Bay of Quinte is to maximize your time by the water, and Zwick’s Park offers plenty of ways to do just that. My daughter dubbed Belleville “the city of awesome parks” after a recent visit, thanks mainly to the enormous playground here that can keep little ones busy for hours. Pop-ups On the Bay runs on weekends during summer, where a rotating selection of local vendors take over stalls built out of shipping containers and painted with colourful murals. And there’s always the option to keep it simple and go for a stroll or a bike ride along the park’s waterfront trails. Belleville’s food scene. There are great restaurants throughout the region, but Belleville is the clear epicentre of the Bay of Quinte’s food scene. The Lark is set in a fresh and modern space and is best known for its inventive cocktails and small rotating menu made in part with locally sourced ingredients. Some customerfavourite cocktails are even available pre-mixed to enjoy at home. Chilangos offers Mexican food at its finest, made even better by the ability to sample so much variety in one meal. We tried a flight of margaritas—they’re all tasty, but the spicy lime jalapeño is where it’s at—along with tortilla chips with three different sauces, tamales, and a variety of tacos. Linguine’s is a Belleville staple, serving classical Italian food on Highway 62 for more than 20 years. We had lunch at The Boathouse and enjoyed their seafood specialties from indoors as we rode out a thunderstorm, but the extensive patio has great views over Belleville Harbour. Head to the Harbour Café for classic and unfussy homestyle breakfasts, or try Birdy's Fine Casual Dining to sit on the patio and enjoy a variety of options, including a full vegan breakfast and gluten-free adjustments for no extra charge.
TYENDINAGA Mohawk Landing Ceremony. Between Belleville and Napanee is Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, which is home to the Kenhtè:ke Kanyen'kehà:ka (Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte). The Mohawks arrived in this area on May 22, 1784, when roughly 125 people landed in canoes near Deseronto, displaced from their ancestral homeland in New York State during the American Revolution for being allies of the British. Each year on or near this date, a ceremony is held commemorating their safe arrival, including a thanksgiving recitation in Mohawk and offerings of tobacco to the Creator. Understanding that reconciliation can never happen without truth, we gratefully attended this year’s ceremony and appreciated the chance to educate ourselves on the history of the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and its people.
NAPANEE Waterfront River Pub and Terrace. Originally built as a brewery in 1857, and abandoned for several years, the Waterfront River Pub and Terrace reopened in 2013 after a thorough overhaul. Steph and I will opt for a patio as often as possible and our outdoor table overlooking the Napanee River was a quaint backdrop to a tasty meal. Burgers, sandwiches, wraps salads and soups adorn the menu and can accommodate gluten and dairy-free requests.
Napanee Falls. As a bonus attraction, stop by the Napanee Falls where the water spills over limestone and creates an appearance of steps as it descends. Loyalist Trading Company. When we found out the Loyalist Trading Company had goat feedings on their roof, it was a harmonious “yes!” to stop in. This cozy family-owned store offers up locally made food and wares is located 10 minutes from the Glenora Ferry. We were fortunate enough to have the resident goats, Grover and Lenny, be coaxed onto the roof as food was lifted to them via a clever pulley system. This cute store has knick-knacks and practical items for visitors, surrounded by warm, friendly service. Come for the small-town charm, stay for the cute goats! Bay of Quinte wineries. Prince Edward County is well-known for its wineries, but what’s less well-known is there’s a small but growing mini-region on the mainland, just south of Napanee on Loyalist Parkway. When approaching the area from the east, you can stop in at these locations, follow the Parkway westbound to the Glenora ferry, then continue your tour in the County. The three wineries currently operating here are the subject of this issue’s Decanting Digest wine feature, which you can find on pages 56 and 57.

The shores of Ontario’s lakes and rivers are peppered with 146 classic lighthouses. In fact Ontario has more lighthouses than any Canadian province other than Nova Scotia. These lighthouses range from towering stone affairs built in the earliest days of Canadian Parliament to humble wooden structures marking the harbours of hamlets that grew into villages and then towns. Before the advent of the car, Ontario was a mostly waterfaring province and these lighthouses helped travelers to avoid dangerous rocks and navigate to Ontario's multitudinous harbours and ports. These five lighthouses make great summer day trips whether you’re interested in history or maybe would just like to see a new part of Ontario and all are within a 300km drive of downtown Mississauga.
GODERICH LIGHTHOUSE
Perched atop a commanding bluff overlooking Lake Huron you will find the Goderich Lighthouse. This square tower was built in 1847 to mark the town’s harbor and though it stands only 10 meters tall, its light is 46 meters above the surface of the water making it one of the loftiest in Ontario. The grounds surrounding the lighthouse have multiple picnic tables and is a great place to have lunch while admiring the view.

Goderich claims to be Canada’s prettiest town and they have some grounds on which to make that argument. A distinctive octagonal town square features a courthouse in the middle flanked by multiple shops and eateries around its radius. Of particular interest is Part 2 Bistro serving refined Canadian classics in the town square. Goderich also has an excellent beach for swimming although parking can become scarce on summer weekends.
PORT BURWELL LIGHTHOUSE
This red-striped tower is the oldest wooden lighthouse on the Canadian Great Lakes. It would have rotted into disrepair like most wooden lighthouses if not for the commendable efforts of the local Mennonite community in 1986 who restored the lighthouse with hand tools and techniques similar to those used in its original construction. Originally, the tower was painted white with a red lantern room but the distinctive vertical red stripes were added during its 1986 restoration. Port Burwell has other attractions that make it a worthwhile destination for a summer day trip. The sandy beach is great for swimming although check water conditions before you leave. The Port Burwell Marine Museum is also worth checking out. But the town’s most famous attraction is the massive cold war submarine, the HMCS Ojibwa which can be seen looming behind the town’s main street. Tours are offered but slots do fill up so make sure to make reservations before you go!

From in town to out of the way, take a chance to get acquainted with some of Ontario’s many lighthouses...
GIBRALTAR POINT LIGHTHOUSE
If you want to go see a lighthouse this summer, you don’t have to leave the GTA! Gibraltar Point Lighthouse was built on the Toronto Islands in 1808 and today it is the oldest surviving lighthouse on the Great Lakes. It’s also one of Canada’s most famous haunted lighthouses due to the mysterious murder of its first keeper in 1813. A human jaw bone was found near the lighthouse in 1893 to substantiate the story and some say the keeper’s restless spirit can still be encountered in the night. The best way to access the lighthouse is to take a ferry from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal in Toronto to Hanlan’s Point on the Toronto Islands. If you visit on a summer weekend you’ll also have a chance to ride on the paddlewheeler Trillium from 1910. It’s the oldest operational side-paddlewheeler on the Great Lakes and occasionally pressed into service in good weather.
VICTORIA HARBOUR RANGE REAR LIGHTHOUSE
Unless you knew where to look, chances are you would never find this secluded little lighthouse. This was a “range light” which means it worked in conjunction with a second lighthouse at lower elevation. The rough idea is that mariners would aim their ships so that the two range lights aligned themselves in a vertical line, one atop the other thus meaning they had the correct heading to safely enter the harbour. This lighthouse was first lit in 1910 and stayed in use all the way
to the 1990s. In 2012 the lighthouse was treated to a beautiful restoration and today it remains in picture-perfect condition. Access to the lighthouse is well-marked and you’ll find it at the end of a brief walking trail. Visitors will be rewarded with a commanding view of Port McNicholl and Victoria Harbour. If you squint you may even be able to see the SS Keewatin moored across the bay. It is one of the largest surviving Eduardian passenger liners in the world.
KINCARDINE LIGHTHOUSE
Kincardine Lighthouse is actually the only downtown lighthouse on the Canadian side of Lake Huron. This style of lighthouse is also unique in Canada with its tower sprouting out from the top of the keeper’s dwelling. Kincardine Lighthouse was first lit in 1881 was converted to electricity from oil lighting in 1925 and eventually automated in 1977. Today it’s leased to the Kincardine Yacht Club who uses it as a clubhouse and a small museum which is open to the public. Bars and restaurants line nearby Harbour St and some even have patios where you can sip a beer and take in the views of the lighthouse and Lake Huron. A local craft brewery, Grey Matter Beer Company is walking-distance from the lighthouse and serves a delightful mix of craft beers, some of which are lighthouse themed!

Road tripping has always been a love of mine, and as we emerge from the pandemic, that passion to hit the open road has been re-ignited. Here’s how to re-create my journey from Redmond to Eugene. Fly into Redmond, located smack dab in the heart of Oregon’s high desert. A quick Uber ride takes me to downtown Redmond for an overnight at the SCP Hotel (be sure to check out the rooftop, for panoramas of the Cascade mountains). Early the next morning, I drive 20 minutes to Smith Rock State Park. There are several thousand climbs in the park, more than 1,000 bolted. With the help of a guide from Smith Rock Climbing Guides, I carefully pick my way up the short basalt walls of the Northern Point. At Smith Rock there are also miles of hiking/mountain biking trails, where you can marvel at the dramatic formations from 30 million years ago when overlying rock collapsed into an underground lava chamber. Golden eagles also nest here. An hour drive south on the 97, is the High Desert Museum. My timing is perfect for lunch on the outdoor patio (the ahi tuna bowl is the best I’ve tasted). Set on 135 acres, here you can see wildlife like rescue otters and golden eagles and explore the history and culture of the Wild West. There are also temporary exhibits like “Imagine a World”, which was sparked by the covid pandemic and prompts us to reflect on who we want to be as a society by examining efforts at utopian communities (like Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, who established a commune in Oregon). After an hour back in the car, I leave the high desert and head north on Highway 58 into the Deschutes National Forest and Cascade mountain range. I stop for a coffee and a leg stretch at the rustic Odell Lake Lodge & Resort which dates back to 1903. The late snowfall has cancelled the canoe
activity I had planned, but I substitute with a horse buggy ride, pulled by a massive Clydesdale who peacefully clip-clops around the resort forest. Further up the road, the weather doesn’t prevent my hike to Salt Creek Falls, Oregon’s second highest waterfall, cascading 87 metres into the creek. If you hike the steep trail from the observation platform to the waterfall’s base, you can actually feel the spray on your face. In nearby Oakridge, an Oregonian mountain biking mecca region, I stop for a quick IPA and yummy cottage pie at the quirky-meets-British-pub-house, the 3 Legged Crane. Further up the mountain I check in at Westfir Lodge, located across the street from the longest covered bridge in the state. Westfir is one of those sleepy towns with such incredible beauty that your first thought is “I want to live here”. I fall asleep to the sound of the rushing Willamette River North Fork and wake up early for a forest bathing walk with Noah Sunflower, who co-owns the lodge with his partner Tracey. They also operate the Cascades Outdoor Center, where they offer mountain biking shuttles, and rafting, kayaking, and hiking/snowshoeing tours. Again, the snowy weather cancels my kayak excursion to Larison Cove, so instead I head to one of the several nearby natural hot springs, McCredie. A 15-minute walk, made terribly exciting by some tight-rope walking along a series of logs, brings us to one of the most beautiful hot pools I’ve ever seen, the perfect place for a two-hour soak, punctuated with (very) cold dips in Salt Creek. Totally invigorated and feeling at one with nature, I’m ready for the 45-minute drive to Eugene, my final destination.

We’re fortunate to have a lakefront in Mississauga so take full advantage of it. Kayaking, canoeing, boat tours, swimming, and walks along beaches are wonderful ways to enjoy our waterfront. Hotspots include Lakefront Promenade, Marie Curtis Park, Lakeview Park and Jack Darling.
Shop local and find new favourites
I know, I know; the shop local message has been broadcast loud and clear for over two years. It’s still crucial and more important than ever. Restrictions have been eased and many of us are feeling increasingly comfortable venturing out. Take some time to find some new small businesses to support while still frequenting your existing favourites. Finding even three or four new places per month, whether it’s a restaurant or retail, can make a difference. Who knows? Maybe the new finds will make it in your favourites column.

Parks/Trails
With a winding network of walking and hiking trails, plus over 500 parks, it’s unlikely you’ll stroll all of them this summer, which is a good thing. Riverwood is an absolute gem, Erindale Park is popular yet enticing, Rattray Marsh still seems like it’s unknown to most (go discover it!) the Lake Aquitaine Trail is a must-visit, along with the relatively new Danville and Saigon Parks being beautiful spots.
Bike paths
Over 500 km of mixed use bike paths await cyclists to explore the city. There are park paths, bicycle lanes and signed bike routes to pedal through, so grab your helmet and see our city from a different perspective.
SUMMER Explore different wards
Similar to the aforementioned “find new favourites” point, a simple strategy can be do dive into a different ward each week. With 11 wards/areas, that gives you 10 (minus your own) to discover and enjoy. You can go regionally or numerically to explore the city.
Festivals
So. Many. Festivals! From the Craft Beer Festival, to the Bollywood Monster Mashup, to the Butter Tart Festival, the Southside Shuffle, Portugalo Fest and oh-so many more, Mississauga’s got something for nearly everyone.
Join a community social media group If you’re stuck on finding new places, jump into some Mississauga community social media pages to engage with the community. Popular ones are the North Mississauga Communities Group and South Mississauga Communities Group, which are run by local residents and full of helpful members.

One aspect we aren’t talking about is how this impacts volunteering in our society. The pandemic impacted the not-for-profit spaces in very different ways, the demand for support increased and the volunteers to provide them decreased. As we move back into the world of festivals those events are struggling to find the people, they need to run the events we have all come to know and love. Many are not returning. Conversely, we do see people wanting to get out enjoy a concert or cultural event but they don’t want to get involved. There are a lot of reasons for that, from working multiple jobs, supporting family members that are ill and the real risk of exposure to COVID still for our seniors and other groups who often give of their time. We also need to talk about how much of our community depends on unpaid work to be vibrant. Even that food drive that you just drop things off to needs someone else who’s made the flyers, send out the tweets & is checking to pick up the donations & distribute them. We just saw a historical low of voting turn out, which is being blamed on apathy, on a lack of inspiration to participate. While our province provides many critical services from healthcare, transit investments & education it’s hard to understand why people aren’t inspired to make sure we do better as we move forward from the pandemic. If you felt uninspired by the election that’s ok, but if you want to reignite some passion for our community get involved with a local event. You’ll be inspired by the joy you bring to others.

PRAVEEN AMIRTHARAJ: What is the Mindset Mentor show all about? TANIA KOLAR: The Mindset Mentor radio show is about helping people condition their mindset for greater success in all areas of life. It's about real people, great stories, powerful stories of people rising above adversity. It's helping the listeners find another way of looking at things, having a new perspective, and opening their mindset to the limitless possibilities available to everyone. PA: What kind of person is listening to the Mindset Mentor? TK: Anyone who is looking to improve life and who wants more for themselves. It's human nature to want more, but our limiting mindset often makes us believe that we can't have (more). I'm so excited to be able to reach so many different people from all walks of life because often, people feel that success is for someone else. I'm here to tell everyone that success is for you, and I want to encourage and inspire people to reach their full potential.

PA: What has your recent medical journey taught you about yourself? TK: Many things have come to light through being diagnosed with breast cancer and going through the treatment process -chemotherapy treatments and two surgeries. One of the things that it has taught me is that life doesn't have to be perfect for you to be happy. It's really key because so many people look for external things to be right before they can be okay. I decided early on when I was diagnosed with breast cancer that I was going to be the happiest person with cancer. I know that there is something beautiful here within this, and I have to be okay with whatever happens, so I stayed very present in the moment. Ultimately, it's a gift because I believe that our greatest challenges are our greatest blessings. For me, the gift is knowing that I have the ability to help other people who are also going through a similar challenge. We have everything we need within us. It's a matter of rising above limited thinking and not getting trapped in terms of the negativity because it's really easy to get stuck in that kind of mindset. PA: What's been tougher to overcome- the physical or the mental? TK: That's a really great question, and quite honestly, the physical aspects were harder to overcome. I have spent a lot of time conditioning my mindset, like literally decades. I'm used to being a very busy person like many people, and I think I got caught up with being super busy all the time, and then the universe presented
a situation where I was forced to slow down; my body wasn't keeping up. My cognitive function wasn't there, and I experienced a lot of fatigue. I couldn't think clearly, was completely sleep-deprived, and you just can't operate the same when you're going through all of that. That was a bit of a challenge, and I had to allow myself time to rest and unwind. Sometimes you just have to recognize that you need to heal. PA: Have you found that your priorities have changed, or have you just picked up where you left off? TK: I would say that my priorities have not changed, but I think that it's important to recognize my true core values. At the end of the day, my soul has remained unchanged. I still am who I am. Essentially, it is picking up where I left off but in a more meaningful and profound sense. Life is in perpetual motion. It's solidified everything that I believed and everything that I teach as a mindset and business coach; inspiring and helping people live their best lives and shift their mindsets forced me to put everything into practice. It was gratifying to see that because it can be done, and I'm not special, so If I can do it, anyone can do it. PA: What does the Peel community mean to you?
TK: Peel has meant a lot to me throughout the many years I've spent in Peel. I have met so many incredible people who have become friends through the community. I believe community is all about developing love, connection, and unity. It's really about contributing. Community allows you to contribute and give back. It also allows you to get one of the basic human needs met: the need for significance. We want to feel love and connection, and that comes through community. We can achieve so much greater collectively as a unit versus by ourselves. If you think about it, when good things happen, you want to share that with the people around you, which means your community.

With the cost of living rising, from gas to goods and nearly everything in between, here are some simple ways to shrink your spending and make your dollar go further this summer. PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT There’s plenty of technologically advanced thermostats on the market and there’s bound to be one that fits your needs. Be in full control of your temperature from your smartphone as your utility bills see a dip.
TWO WHEELS OVER FOUR When you can, consider biking to places close to home opposed to the car. Gas prices are absurd with little relief in sight, so save some money, reduce emissions and opt for two wheels and some fresh air when you can.
DRAW YOUR DRAPES AND BLINDS On hotter days, close up your drapes, blinds and curtains to keep the heat outside while staying cooler inside. You’ll end up running your air conditioner less frequently and again, watch those dollars pile up.
ALTERNATIVE COOKING METHODS When you run the stove/oven, the residual heat can warm an entire floor. Consider BBQ-ing in batches so you’ve got meals for the week. Using a slow/pressure cooker and or air fryer still gets your food cooked but at a fraction of the heat an oven generates.
CHECK YOUR INSULATION The smallest crack or seam in insulation can cost you hundreds of dollars that will literally vanish into air. Take a thorough look around windows and doors for imperfect seals and patch any gaps to keep the heat out and the cool in.
FLIP THE FAN If you have a ceiling fan, run it counterclockwise to push the air flow downward, creating a cool-ish breeze. You’ll end up using your air conditioner sparingly since there’s existing air movement in the house.
CLEAN YOUR VENTS AND FILTERS A clogged/dirty filter can cost you money as it forces your air conditioner to work harder. It’s a relatively easy DIY project that’ll pay dividends all year long. Also, check your vents for any blockages, dust, debris and if you notice a weak airflow, consider getting them cleaned for higher efficiency. AIR-DRY YOUR LAUNDRY Dryers draw a high amount of power so take advantage of the warmer weather and let your clothes dry outside. Clothes racks are a small up-front investment that’ll continuously save you money.
GO LOW If you’ve got a basement, take advantage of the natural cooler temperatures to beat the heat. If you’ve got an unfinished basement or if it’s in need of repair, it’s a good time to look into some DIY solutions to maximize this part of your home. DAY TRIPPER Taking a series of day trips over summer reduces the cost of accommodations/airfare/car rentals/high-priced food/drink compared to a longer vacation as you’ll be back in your cool bed each night. There are hundreds of places to visit and experience in and around Mississauga, so get out there and create new memories.

Having a blast on your Prince Edward County wine tour and don’t want it to end? Guess what: it doesn’t have to. Head east on the Glenora ferry and you’ll find yourself on the eastern edge of the region known as the Bay of Quinte—essentially, the other side of the body of water that separates the County from the rest of Ontario. On this section of the Loyalist Parkway heading eastbound toward Kingston, a microregion for Ontario wine is emerging and creative ideas are being hatched. Here’s a look at the wineries you’ll encounter there now, in the order you’ll find them as you get off the ferry and drive east. One had only just officially opened when we dropped in this past Victoria Day long weekend and at least one more is due to open before the end of the summer. It’s a safe bet that others won’t be far behind.

10941 Loyalist Pkwy., Adolphustown This winery is brand new for 2022—the roadside sign hadn’t even been hung yet when we visited in mid-May! It’s a motherdaughter operation where the grapes are hand-picked across 15 acres of vines, the realization of a dream for this family who arrived in Canada from China in 2015. Their wines present in semi-sweet, fruit-forward style, perfect for easy summer patio sipping. Their 2021 Fruit Feast ($19.95) is made with Geisenheim, a cold-climate hybrid grape of Riesling and Chancellor, and features intense flavours of passion fruit and orange blossom. The 2021 Gewurztraminer ($19.95) is drier and more traditional in style with strong floral notes and lychee flavours. Especially intriguing is the 2021 Midsummer Night ($16.95 for 375 mL), which uses Frontenac Gris grapes to produce an orange wine (a white wine where the skins are left in contact with the juice). The result here is a wine nearly equivalent in sweetness to a late harvest with unmistakeable flavours of strawberry and caramel. These casual, easy sippers will be big hits on hot summer nights.

THIRTY-THREE VINES
Continue east along Loyalist Parkway, and the next winery you’ll encounter is Bergeron Estate. The vines here were planted in 2004, making this the longest-established commercial vineyard on this small peninsula south of Napanee. Bergeron’s lighter reds are particularly well done, especially given this area’s more northerly climate. The 2021 Gamay noir ($24.95) is properly light while featuring definitive raspberry and black pepper flavours. In the 2020 Cabernet Franc ($25.95), red berries mingle with green pepper to create a highly traditional and refined example of this underrated red that loves to grow in Ontario. On the cider front, Bergeron’s Cole Point Cider is exceptional: finished in a scrumpy style with some cloudiness, the mix of apples and local haskap berries has both depth and bite and is unique and incredibly refreshing. Want to linger a little longer? There’s an AirBnB at the front of the building, where you can stay overnight among the winery’s 10 acres of vineyard while enjoying wood-fired pizza and a complimentary tasting.
Named after Ontario Highway 33, the provincial designation for the Loyalist Parkway, this winery has an interesting back story. It was open and producing wines between 2011 and 2014, at which point the previous owner stopped maintaining it and the vines fell into neglect. The Dunn family purchased the winery in the spring of 2019 and is offering up those early vintages in a new, rustic tasting room set inside the property’s big red barn. Meanwhile, the vines that grow Riesling, Baco noir, Pinot noir, Cabernet Franc, Marquette, and more are being gently nudged back into production. We sampled the 2013 Chardonnay ($38.00), which presents in a somewhat untraditional style with a citrus nose, lemon and peach flavours, and a touch of toasted coconut imparted by a gentle touch of oak. The 2011 Cabernet Franc ($42.00) is drinking beautifully right now with layers of green pepper and spice, tea, and hints of blackcurrant. It will be very interesting to see what comes off these vines when they start producing new vintages later this year.

Kayaking/Canoeing/ Stand Up Paddle Boarding STRAVA This multi-purpose app is popular amongst kayakers as it lets you track your route, progress, speed, performance and analytics. There’s a free and paid version available and a community segment. TIDES NEAR ME Knowing the water conditions is crucial for safety and planning. This app gives you in depth info on tidal conditions with tables, charts and predictions to help keep you safe on the water. GO PADDLING With over 25,000 locations, this app makes it easy to find places to enjoy time on the water. This free app gives you info on launch sites to help plan a summer full of paddling.
Hiking ALL TRAILS This wildly popular app is ideal for finding new trails and includes difficulty rating, length, dog and kid-friendly trails and user ratings. The content comes from community members that are user-generated so you’ll have a chance to add your input as you explore.
GAIA GPS While the quantity of trails is lower, the quality of information is higher. This app lets you create your own routes, add and edit waypoints, and has a built in compass. SPYGLASS This advanced 3D augmented reality navigation GPS app boasts helpful and safety features including a gyrocompass, maps, high-tech viewfinder, waypoint tracker, military spec compass, tactical GPS and coordinate converter.
Walking/Running MAP MY WALK A simple yet effective free comprehensive app to help you keep track of your progress as you get your daily/weekly/monthly steps in. It’s easy to use and has available advanced metrics including foot strike angle, stride length, and ground contact time. NIKE RUN CLUB Another free app from the sports giant gives you the expected array of stats, plus it comes with guided runs but not suggested routes. ARGUS The cool factor for this free app is that it doubles as a heart rate monitor by placing your finger on your camera lens. There’s a sleep cycle tracker, pedometer and multi-activity GPS tracker, along with challenges and video exercises.
