With lockdowns now lifted, the new gallery space is a welcome addition to the cultural scene in Port Credit. The space not only features local artists’ work but also temporary pop-up shops, a community rental space, as well as a photography studio for personal and professional photo sessions. Gloria and Marcelo look forward to future events at Pazan Gallery where the community will once again come together for shared cultural experiences that foster community spirit and goodwill.

Creative Recognition by mike douglas |

photos by andréa marchant

Just as we were getting ready to go to the Meadowvale Theatre. Just as MAC was gathering nominations for the Mississauga Arts Awards. Just as people were planning to live their lives - the whole world of shows was cancelled.

14 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

More than a year later, many have mastered their patience and all of us look forward to the renewal of in-person events. Meanwhile we continue to find new ways of supporting the recognition and appreciation that are so important to anyone actively seeking to connect with others. The arts in all their splendid forms are famous for bringing people together and when that was largely restricted, creatives adapted to new forms of expression and found ways to work in connecting to old, new and different audiences. At the Mississauga Arts Council, what are we to make of the year of the pandemic and its impact on recognizing and awarding the finest creative performances in Mississauga in 2019 and 2020? In May 2019, the Mississauga Arts Awards celebrated 25 successful years with the awards known simply

as The MARTYS. Our most supportive Mayor Bonnie Crombie opened the gala dinner with greetings citing the value and importance of the arts to Mississauga, then MAC President Jeanette Chau introduced our talented award winning hosts, Alessia Cohle and Rob Tardik.

The MARTYS Are Coming! On Thursday, May 20, 2021, at 7 o’clock MAC will adapt The MARTYS into a digital program on Mississauga Art Council’s YouTube page. Fresh from the outstanding success of Hazel A Celebration: 100 Years in the Making, (60,000 viewers), MAC’s President, Ron Duquette and Board Director, Fil Plaskota, will again join forces to create a world class webcast for outstanding artists that honours them and makes residents of Mississauga proud. Mayor Crombie will welcome the community, outstanding artists, nominees and guests, before Arlene, last year’s MARTY Winner as Outstanding Vocalist takes over her Hosting duties. The show will keep its video savvy glitz and glamour as we recognize winning musicians, visual artists, writers, dancers and video artists. For theatre and festivals, nominations may be hard to submit and that is understandable. The one thing that matters most is participation! Getting engaged, staying up and moving forward matter greatly to our well-being. With your presence, you are part of the encouragement fund that helps to fuel more resilient artists in an active sustainable creative community.

The New Martys HUB Bringing the creative community together in one place online is what MAC is working on behind the scenes. Taking advantage of what we learned building the online Holiday Arts Boutique and applying what we know, from producing MACtivities, the weekly arts and events newsletter, informs how we can open the portal windows for artists, groups, festivals, show openings, classes and newsmakers - all with a place in Martys Hub. Get ready to get seen on Martys HUB. P.S., If you are a professional creative facing hurdles and difficulties please share them with us and allow us to see if we can be of service. Stay strong, and watch for the next round of Micro-grants. mississaugaartscouncil.com

So What Else Is New? Arts 4 Mental Health Conference

In order to present a viable case for creative employment as arts instructors and coaches, we need to know about relevant experiences and stories that can be shared in order to foster a roster of creative services for classes aimed at delivering mental wellness. The previously cancelled Arts 4 Mental Health Conference, is now planned for early summer, and will bring healthcare providers and creative service providers together, to devise a new program for applying the healing power of creative expression, to those suffering with high anxiety and depression. How has We Wander stayed active during the pandemic? This pandemic has defiantly been hard on us, and for so many people we can only imagine. There has been a lot of late night, early morning zoom meetings discussing our newest release Rock and a Hard Place, trying to come up with a plan on how to stay creative without the presence of live shows. We are so fortunate to live in a time of technology, and live streams trying to emulate that live show performance. Also staying actively writing and recording on our own.

Describe your style of music to a stranger in six words:

Singer/Songwriter Meets Indie Alternative Fiddler.

What brought the three of you together to start We Wander?

Maddy (Singer/Guitar player) and Camilo (Bass Player) started as the original members back in 2017 and later brought drummer Jacob on. It started as school project which later lead to our first single Street Lights written with our friend Connor Steele. Later we were asked to play our first show and then it began!

You've got a lush and explorative sound, paired with catch grooves and smartly written hooks. Do you write the lyrics or music first and why?

Usually we write chords first, and find a melody in the making of the lyrics. It tents to be a little easy for us to feel out what type of song we want to go for based on the chords. It's all about what you’re feeling in that moment and how to want to sound coming out.

What does the balance of 2021 look like for the band? Working on our live show and writing new music.

What's your message to inspire others in the new modern world? Stay creative, while being yourself. Give yourself breaks and don’t be hard on yourself. wewandermusic.com

ME HOLIDAY by jay kana

TAKE ME AWAY IS AN INCREDIBLY POWERFUL COMPOSITION WITH A STRONG AND SMARTLY COMMUNICATED MESSAGE. WHAT'S THE ONE LINE THAT IS THE MOST IMPACTFUL TO YOU?

The one line that is the most impactful to me is “black kids dying, yeah it’s like that everyday, there’s no way to get away. These the cards that we were played”. This is impactful to me because for so long we’ve been fighting for equal rights and to end racism, but even after all these years, racism is still such a big thing and we’ve yet to see change. It almost feels normalized, like this is the way the world is supposed to be but that’s not true.

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC TO A STRANGER IN SIX WORDS

Versatile, Hip-Hop, R&B, Feel-Good, Vibes, Emotional

YOU'VE RELEASED THREE ALBUMS IN FIVE YEARS - HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN CREATIVITY?

WHAT DOES THE BALANCE OF 2021 LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

Nothing but consistency! It’s all gas no breaks for me! I plan on releasing more singles, building the anticipation up for my next project that will be releasing closer to the end of 2021.

WHAT'S YOUR MESSAGE TO INSPIRE OTHERS IN THE NEW MODERN WORLD?

I maintain creativity by trying new things, travelling to different places, always wanting more for myself, paying attention to social media and what’s happening in the world and never being too comfortable or content with my current situation.

I want to inspire people by being an example of what making sacrifices, dedicating yourself to your craft and never giving up looks like and helping people see that they can do the same.

WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR MUSICAL LEGACY TO BE?

instagram.com/officialfameholiday

The legacy I want to leave as an artist is similar to what Drake has done for Toronto, but I’d like to do it for the city of Mississauga. I want to be remembered as the underdog that never gave up, who consistently put in the work to achieve all of his goals and took care of his family.

HOW HAVE BIKE THIEFS STAYED ACTIVE DURING THE PANDEMIC?

We’ve actually had a pretty successful year, all things considered. We signed with a great record label - Stomp Records, and released our debut album, Leaking. We also put out a few music videos in support of the album. Coupled with that, we’ve been working on new material. Outside of music, Kris has been flexing his green thumb, Andrew helped direct the videos and Marko built a military compound in his Mom’s backyard made of couch cushions.

20 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AS A BAND TO DATE AND WHY?

Probably this record. We worked really hard on the songs and road-tested them on several tours. Then put a lot of time and energy into the recording. We’re happy to have it out and ready for consumption, our baby is finally going away to college.

WHAT DOES THE BALANCE OF 2021 LOOK LIKE FOR THE BAND?

We’re hoping to get back on the road before the end of this year, and Europe early next year. And in the interim, we’ll keep writing new songs and getting ready to be busy. Hopefully, we’ll be able to work out the kinks of our new found social ineptitude.

YOU RECENTLY SIGNED WITH STOMP RECORDS; WHAT SPECIFIC ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER ARTISTS WHEN DECIDING WHO TO SIGN WITH?

Go where you’re loved, not accepted. Sometimes it’s worth experimenting with talent outside of your wheelhouse. We’re really lucky to have found Stomp, who was willing to take a chance on us even though, superficially, we stick out from their roster. And so far, it’s been working out great.

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC TO A STRANGER IS SIX WORDS? Punk snobs’ torrid affair with sodium.

WHAT'S YOUR MESSAGE TO INSPIRE OTHERS IN THE NEW MODERN WORLD?

Invest in big pharma; start smoking; and call your loved ones back. bikethiefs.com

What inspired you to delve into music?

I just knew it was what I had to do from a very young age. One of my oldest memories was looking at Britney on stage and thinking I had to find a way to perform. Watching Josie and the Pussycats was an eye opening moment for me. Seeing these awesome women with guitars, writing their own music and taking charge of their careers was life changing. It helped that the soundtrack was amazing.

You blend various styles of music together what led you to do this and how has this style helped evolve you as an artist?

I grew up listening to pop artists drastically reinventing their sounds. No Doubt’s Rock Steady album has influenced me from a really young age. It’s an effortless mix of electropop and dancehall. Since I’ve started seriously writing, the artists around me have become my biggest inspiration. There is such an incredible amount of talent in Ontario. It’s amazing being in a room and getting to feed off the energy of another artist. I’m still finding my sound but I try to use that in a positive way. Instead of feeling stuck when I can’t find a specific producer, I just try to make whatever is available to me beat-wise my own.

Why did you gravitate towards full-time streaming on Twitch and how has the experience been?

Twitch has been mostly amazing! I was starting to transition to being a full time DJ right before Covid. I miss the energy of a gig but so much of the job is hoping you’ll actually get paid. You have

very little control in abusive situations. Twitch really helped me take back control of my life. I can’t believe how supportive people can be of the arts online when they connect with you. I’m also not limited to music; I mix my love of Cosplay and gaming in. The only downside has been Digital Millennium Copyright Act issues have made it more difficult to incorporate music I love into my streams.

What are you most proud of in your career?

I’ve been dealing with an undiagnosed illness since I was a kid. It’s gotten in the way of so many huge opportunities for me, I had no idea what I was going through or if my pain was real. I recently was diagnosed with Hypermobility, which explains the pain and a ton of other issues. In a way, it’s been a huge relief to know I’m not crazy. I always felt like I wasn’t good enough. I feel sad knowing I could have done so much more in life if a doctor had realized what was going on. Some treatments have helped, focusing on how to manage things differently is important. I’m proud of myself for never actually quitting what I love. Now that I finally understand how to take care of myself, I’m hoping I can grow into the artist I’ve always wanted to be.

What's your message to aspiring artists?

You’re stronger when you’re open to new things. Don’t trust people who talk too much.

What's your message of positivity for the world? Be Kind.

DAY TRIPPING INTO Nat

26 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

Confined in the same desk drawer since January 2020, my passport rests, yearning for a couple of new stamps or even just a quick jaunt across the border...

ture words & images by jennifer merrick ...But if a silver lining can be found in the document's quarantine, it’s the realization that getting outdoors and into nature is vital for our mental and physical well-being. And that we don’t need to go very far to get the benefits. Hiking, biking and cross-country skiing have brought joy and wellbeing into our family’s lives over the past year. And so, we offer you 45 day trip ideas that will take you take into nature, no passport required.

Hamilton Waterfalls The Hamilton Region is home to more than 100 waterfalls dotting the Niagara Escarpment that cuts through the city. Webster Falls is the largest and most popular though equally impressive is nearby Tews Falls with

its 135-foot drop (second only to Niagara Falls). The Webster Side Trail leads to Dundas Peak, a lookout with jaw-dropping views of the valley. Other waterfalls include Tiffany Falls, where a short walk along a forested trail and over bridges leads you to this beauty hemmed in by cliffs. Devil’s Punch Bowl (gotta love the name) consists of two separate falls that create one of the escarpment’s most impressive and geologically significant views with its layers of stratified rock.

Halton Region Conservation Areas In the middle of Toronto and

Hamilton is a protected greenbelt zone, where nature takes precedent over suburban sprawl. Six

conservation areas offer interpretive trails and programming, and each offer something different to the visitor. Crawford Lake has a 14thcentury Iroquois village to explore, in addition to the wheelchair accessible boardwalk around the lake, where evidence of the settlement was discovered. Rattlesnake Point has 6 miles of cliff edge and forest trails with five panoramic lookout points. A highlight of Hilton Falls is a 32-foot waterfall that cascades over the Niagara Escarpment. Like neighboring parks Mount Memo and Kelso, it offers hiking trails showcasing unique geological features and historical ruins.

continued... For bird lovers, nearby Mountsberg is not to be missed. Its extensive wetlands provide a natural habitat for many native species, which visitors can observe at bird watching blinds. The area is particularly known for its birds of prey, and visitors can learn more about these majestic birds at the park’s Raptor Centre.

Prince Edward County Famous for its windswept 82-feet sand dunes, Sandbanks Provincial Park is open year-round. Scale the dunes themselves, walk along the Cedar Sands Nature Trail (which brings you across dunes, through forest and along the river) or watch the kite surfers on windy days. Other conservation areas in this scenic region 225 kms east of Mississauga, include Macaulay Mountain, Massassauga Point, Beaver Meadow and Little Bluff. The latter boasts 65-feet high limestone cliffs overlooking the aqua-blue waters of Prince Edward Bay.

28 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

Provincial Parks Sandbanks is just one of 330 provincial parks, which encompass over 8.2 million hectares of land and water. More than 18 of these protected areas are within a 210 km radius of Mississauga, ideal for day trippers who want to explore nature. Located on the shores of beautiful Georgian Bay, near Midland, Awenda Provincial Park (205 km) has boardwalks, forest trails and beaches. Closer to home is the very family-friendly Bronte Creek (25 km) with 648 acres of wilderness, campgrounds, trails, picnic shelters, a children’s farm and a play barn. Other provincial parks within day trip range, include Balsam Lake (175 km), Craigleith (135 km), Bass Lake (140 km), Darlington (90 km), Earl Rowe (80 km), Emily (160 km), Ferris (205 km), Forks of the Credit (50 km), Mark S. Burnham (160 km), McRae Point (150 km), Mono Cliffs (70 km), Presqu’ile (185 km), Rock Point (105 km), Selkirk (115 km), Sibbald Point (50 km) and Wasaga Beach (125 km). Tip: Buy a Seasonal Day Use Permit to save money on entrance fees if you’re planning to visit often. Also, be sure to check the Parks Ontario website for seasonal opening times --Ontarioparks.com.

York Regional Forest Despite its proximity to my home, I just recently discovered these protected forests that include 2, 400 hectares of wilderness in different parts of the York Region, and over 150 kms of hiking trails. It is now one of our family’s go-to destination for a nature fix. In spring, Ontario’s provincial flower, the trillium, is out in full force on trails like the Oak Ridges Moraine Trail and the Porritt Tract. Other locations we’ve checked out are the North Tract, 99 Steps Thorton Bales Conservation Area and the Joker Wild Trail.

The Bruce Trail Hiking all 900 kms of the Bruce Trail from Niagara to Tobermory is on my bucket list, but until I find the time and stamina to undertake this challenge, I enjoy hiking sections of Ontario’s longest and oldest footpath and its side trails. At the eastern end of the Queenston Heights Park in Niagara, you’ll find the marker that indicates the beginning of the Bruce Trail. The Queenston Heights Loop follows the edge of the escarpment through woods and unto an old railway bed, which was once part of the New York Central Railroad.

It’s now part of the Upper Canada Heritage Trail, where you can find monuments and historic buildings. One of the most impressive features of the escarpment and the Bruce Trail is its many waterfalls. Check them out in places like Sleepy Hollows Falls near Burlington, Rockway Falls near St. Catherine’s and the Ball’s Falls Conservation Area in Vineland.

Pro Tip: An invaluable tool for finding trails

and not getting lost is the AllTrails Hiking App, covering over 50,000 Canadian and US trails. The apps’ impressive planning capabilities allow hikers to research and choose a suitable trail based on difficulty, distance and activity. And then, the GPS tracking platform helps get you to the trailhead to record and share your hike if you wish. If you upgrade to pro, you’ll be able to download the trail maps for offline use, print them and create your own maps.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A by jay kana

30 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

| photo by natalie rhea on unsplash

Local travel via car within 500km will be wildly popular this year given the state of the world, vaccines and all. Day trips, weekend trips, week-long trips will be heavily utilized as we rediscover what Ontario has to offer. In addition to preparing the exterior of your car for Spring and Summer (as you’ll read on pages 40 and 41) the inside of your car is just as important. Here’s how you can make the most of road trip season, whether you’re travelling solo like I will be, or if it’s a family and or friends based adventure.

Navigation Apps

Between Google Maps and Waze, (sorry Apple maps, you’re lost) you’ll be able to find your destination easily. Make sure your navigation apps are up to date and that you have your settings customized for each trip. From avoiding the wretched 407, to perhaps taking the scenic route (sans highways) to whatever else you prefer, always make sure the app is set up the way you want it for each trip.

Charging Cables

The panic that sets in when a charging cable doesn’t work, paired with a phone that’s got a few percent of battery life is a pain almost all of us have been through at least once. Even if you keep on in the car at all times, take a look at each end to make sure there aren’t any kinks or exposed wires. If you think you need a new one, spend the few dollars to pick up a new one. What’s that you say? You have wireless charging? That’s cool. But your phone heats up incredibly fast if you leave it on the charging pad for too long.

Snacks

Bring non-messy snacks that don’t crumble upon opening. So ixnay the flakey granola bars and chips. Bring items that are easy to eat, don’t make a mess and can easily be resealed/put away.

Pillows and blankets

if you’re travelling mid morning or mid afternoon, the sun will power through your windows and likely make your passengers nap-ready. If you’re doing an overnight trip, the Z’s are a given. Pillows to the rescue! I have a specific car pillow I use as my bed pillow is far too cumbersome to work in a car. Blankets are always a good idea both for comfort or in the unfortunate event of your car breaking down.

Sunglasses

Eye fatigue can bring unscheduled interruptions to your road trip so always bring your sunnies. Yes, the built-in visors can help b ut they reduce how much of the windshield is visible to you.

Reusable water bottle

Stop wasting money on single-use water bottles and pick up a well-made reusable one that fits in your cupholders.

Jumper cables

Because you never know if you’ll need to give or receive help on the road. Side note: check your battery before you embark on adventure.

Cash and change

Doing dozens of USA road trips has this engrained in my mind. Even though there aren’t cash toll roads in Ontario (407 is electronic payment only) it’s a good call to keep some change and a few fivers on you. Mostly because you may stop at a fruit/ vegetable stand where it’s run on the honour system where you drop your cash in the box and enjoy fresh farmed goods.

Dashcam

They’re affordable and can save you time, money, aggravation and hassle if you find yourself in a collision situation. It’ll help with insurance and police reports and if you’re not at fault, there’ll be evidence. Double down and put on on both ends of your vehicle, especially since being rear-ended is a direct cause of distracted driving, which happens far more than it should.

Tablets & Electronics

I’m not a fan of being heavily reliant upon the electronic babysitter; everything in moderation, including a tablet/game console/electronic entertainment. Sometimes kids and adults get bored on road trips, which is understandable. Better to keep them entertained than risk having bordem turn into a bad mood.

Roadside Assistance

Because you simply never know. CAA works for me and has since 1997.

This family friendly hot spot serves up a plethora of delicious apple-based treats, has an on-site restaurant, a colossal candy shop, an on-site brewery, a mini golf course and an observation deck at the top of the massive apple. There’s a dog run, two electric vehicle charging stations and whether it’s a stop on your way or your final destination for a day trip, it’s absolutely worth visiting.

SCENIC CAVES

1.75 HOURS FROM MISSISSAUGA North of the city in The Blue Mountains is where you’ll find the versatile Scenic Caves. This self-guided attraction lets you explore numerous caves at your leisure, cross a spectacular suspension bridge that s 420 feet long and 82 feet high, and with 15 km of trails, you’ll easily met your daily step count. Bring proper footwear as flip flops simply won’t cut it here. With ample opportunities for beautiful pictures, be sure your camera and phone batteries are fully charged.

HAMILTON’S WATERFALLS

Apple CarPlay & Android Auto by paulina pojedyniec

Automotive technology is constantly evolving and manufacturers must advance and adapt technology into their vehicles to keep consumers interested. One of the most popular in-car technologies is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (AA AC) as it can make the driving experience more enjoyable and potentially safer. In existence for almost 10 years, many manufacturers are including it in their base models, which is a sign that this popular technology is here to stay. Here are 5 benefits of AA AC: HANDS-FREE CARING The fines for using our phone and driving are hefty and it’s extremely unsafe for you and those around you. AA AC allow you to use your phone hands free so you can focus on the road and not cause a collision. NAVIGATION AA AC make those of us who are navigationally challenged confident in driving to the correct destination by using apps

38 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

such as Google Maps, Waze, Sygic, and others. This removes the need for traditional on board navigation which is expensive and often in need of time consuming updates. It provides up to date directions, traffic times, delays, notifications of speed cameras, and other useful information. It uses a small amount of data, is current and definitely makes the drive less stressful. ENTERTAINMENT This technology is perfect for music lovers as it seamlessly syncs Spotify, Sound Cloud, audio books, podcasts and more. A perk is that you can control these via voice commands. HANDS-FREE TEXTING Speaking of voice commands, you can respond to texts using your voice, which is much safer than typing and driving. EASE OF USE Once activated, the AA AC icons on you infotainment system are large and easy to read/touch. You likely won’t accidentally touch the wrong icon or when making your choice. Also, this technology is available wirelessly in some newer models and while it can be glitchy at times, there’s always the option to hardwire it for a direct connection.

preparing your car for

Spring

40 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

and Summer by jay kana

| photo by adrian dascal on unsplash

With the change of season, your car needs to make the transition with you. With winter being the most impactful season on your car, here are some crucial things to do to keep your car in optimal shape for warmer weather.

Undercarriage

Change the wiper blades

Interior

Winter’s ice, snow, frost, and salt can accelerate the lifespan of your wiper blades. Being able to see clearly is paramount for safe driving so always change them in the Spring after the heavy use they see in winter. I always use the highest quality blades as you get what you pay for. Besides, buying cheap wiper blades means you’ll have to replace them more often as they’ll wear out much faster.

Washer Fluid

With plenty of crevices on the undercarriage, it’s an ideal spot for catching and holding on to salt, dirt, mud, and muck. Salt is the biggest enemy here as it can slowly eat away at metal surfaces and cause damage that could be noticed a bit too late. You can take the good ol’ DIY route or head to a gas station car wash and opt for the wash that includes an undercarriage cleaning.

Specifically, the footwell area where salt, dirt, mud, and other culprits collect. Even with winter mats, there’s still strong chance there are stains on the carpeted area. The longer you leave it, the harder it will be to remove. There are plenty of cleaners you can buy and paired with a bit batch of elbow grease, that’ll do the trick. Alternatively, a professional detailer can take care of this for you.

Yes, I know there’s a warning light that says when your washer fluid is low but being proactive and filling it up is a smart idea. Also, there’s a clear difference between summer and winter fluids, so avoid mixing them.

Air Conditioning

Wheel alignment

Brakes

Pothole season wreaks havoc on your alignment and as the weather warms, the ground becomes pockmarked with them. Sometimes, you can get away unscathed and other times, it’s quite awful. A misaligned car puts excess and uneven wear on your tires and can increase your fuel consumption, neither being beneficial.

Check your air conditioning on a warm-ish day to make sure it’s running smoothly and properly. Better to do it now opposed to a hot day and find out it’s in rough shape.

Most of your brake components are exposed to the elements and with close proximity to the road, there’s a high chance that there’s leftovers from winter hiding in the crevices, with the potential for salt damage. Since you’re flipping your winter tires for summer tires, have your trusted mechanic do a detailed brake inspection to make sure it’s operating in tip-top shape.

ADJUSTING TO

O

With the introduction of the COVID-19 vaccine, there’s a slow and cautious return to what our new world can be. Not everything will be the same and we have a rare chance to change and reshape our lives going forward. Some may see monumental changes and others will see tweaks. However and whatever your adjustments will be, here are some factors to consider when preparing for what our new modern world can be.

MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021 43

continued >> Personally speaking

After over a year with drastically reduced human interaction, there may be a learning curve to adjust to once restrictions are loosened. With texting, emails and video calls dominating how we’ve communicated through the pandemic, having the ability to see and speak to others in person might be awkward for some. It’s been over a year so remember that reverting to what we used to know won’t be a simple switch; it’ll take time. As someone who lives alone, my approach is to slowly reintroduce this aspect of my life and gradually add to it at a comfortable level. You may want to accelerate the process and if that works for you, do that. On the flip side, there are those who have enjoyed the diminished human interaction and will want to make minimal changes to that. Regardless of what and how you do this, be respectful of those in your life and their choices.

Carrying forward the good

Not everything has to be new and improved and it’s important to carry forward the positive parts of pre-pandemic life. Whether it’s traditions with family and friends, a routine you did on Tuesday night, something you did for yourself once a week, or anything that made you happy, regardless of size/scope. I understand that normalcy tomorrow will differ from yesterday’s version but know that the new world has plenty of space for what made you happy.

Go at your own pace

There’s no golden handbook to utilize when making such an influential adjustment. Some may do it instantly and others may take the scenic route. Whether it’s feeling comfortable to have friends and family over, going out in public, going on physical dates, going to public spaces, etc., you get to decide what’s comfortable for you. Even after I receive the vaccine, as of now, I’m slightly weary of going to the grocery store during peak hours. And that’s absolutely ok. We’re all in various situations and our comfort levels are different so it’s important to not dismiss or minimize anyone else’s approach to creating their new normal.

Fact check

More important than ever is the need to fact check everything you read, see and hear. The internet has provided everyone on it a platform to broadcast nearly anything, including things

44 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

that are not true. If the shock and awe factor has your Spidey Senses tingling, triple check it. Even with information that less sensational, verify it before sharing or acting on it.

Health and wellness

The amount of available resources to understand, monitor and improve your health and wellness is astonishing. From exercise to eye health to mental health and every point in between, creating time to understand this today will only help tomorrow. Everyone’s got an online presence in this industry so if you’re not comfortable being there in person, you’ll be able to engage digitally. However you proceed, do so at a sustainable pace.

Continuing to embrace the stronger sense of community

One of the bright moments through the pandemic has been the heightened and strengthened sense of community. The continuous support of our small businesses across the city clearly illustrates that. From online initiatives to creative campaigns from both the City of Mississauga and the businesses themselves, it’s been inspiring to see how we’ve rallied together to help one another. Now that we’ve helped our businesses get through what I hope is the worst of it, continuing to support them is more important. How we interact with each other is also crucial. From what I’ve seen in person and online, there’s been a strong amount of positivity, people helping people and what I interpret as a genuine higher level of care between us. Yes, there will always be the cowardly trolls and insecure individuals who irresponsibly spew incorrect information (see the point about fact checking) but the majority of us have made the community better for one another through this transitional time.

Journaling & reflecting

This isn’t for everyone - it wasn’t for me until the pandemic started. The current and post-pandemic world will be one of the largest life changes/events. I journal to document how I’ve handled life through the pandemic and to have something to remind me of how I got through challenging days and how I celebrated the exceptional days, and everything in between. There are going to be days that are difficult in the transition to the new world and having a way to communicate that, even through traditional pen and paper, can help make the process easier. Consistency holds more value than frequency, so strongly consider that if this is something you’re moving forward with.

Be adaptable

There’s a difference between completely changing and being adaptable to your surroundings. With so many unknowns about what life will be like, it’s important to set out what you want and need to be happy, and the needs column should be

non-negotiable. It’s the want section that can require adaptability. Sure, I want to play live with my bands every weekend, visit friends and family in person often and to do so many other things prepandemic. Even if we get the proverbial green light, not everyone in my life will share my thoughts. My band mates may only want to play once a month; my friends may be comfortable with bi-weekly get togethers, etc. I truly cannot get upset with them; I have to adapt and compromise. And in a world we’re in now, a little bit of compromise and compassion goes quite a long way. Realistically, not everything we knew will be what we know going forward. Everyone will have a different approach to their new normal and there’s bound to be a few people who have differing thoughts than you. Whether it’s family/friend dynamics, children, elders, businesses, and everything in between, take a moment to understand their point of view and determine if they’re worth you adjusting your want section for.

Erasing expectations

Let’s be realistic with our expectations of what life will be like. Actually, I’m going to erase them and replace it with aspirations. After the past year, expectations of what a post-pandemic life can/will be is vague at best. Expecting to attend live music/sports events, to have full restaurants and bars, to have indoor/outdoor festivals and large gatherings once everyone receives a vaccine is, to me, dangerous. It can lead to disappointment if it doesn’t happen when initially projected. I’m all for optimism, however realism has to come first. MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021 45

In conversation with Mississauga entrepreneur Lauren Yakiwchuk

52 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

by jay kana |

"In 2013, I started my travel blog, Justin Plus Lauren, to keep an online diary of all the trips that I took with my partner, Justin. I figured that if it inspired others to travel to these places along the way, that was awesome! I really didn’t expect that anyone would read it besides us. I started getting into travel writing and photography more and more and never dreamed that I could make a full time living doing what I love; traveling, blogging, creating travel content on social media, and inspiring others to see the world. I previously worked as a video editor in the television industry, which I enjoyed. But, it could be a stressful at times with long shifts, mostly on evenings and weekends. I’ve learned that this is my true passion and I wake up every day loving what I do. From the outset, I’ve written about things that I’m passionate about; eco-friendly and responsible

travel, and inspiring people to travel in a way that’s kind to people, animals, and the planet. I went vegan over a decade ago and write vegan food guides to places around the world to help others looking for delicious plant-based eats." - Lauren Yakiwchuk

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE ONTARIO HIKING?

I’ve always loved hiking. When the pandemic struck, I realized that I wouldn’t be going anywhere for a while and that no one was interested in travel as everyone was staying home. This is not a great scenario for someone in the travel industry.

continued... MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021 53

m oder nMON E Y

continued... I’ve written about hiking on Justin Plus Lauren since the beginning and I’ve been slowly hiking the entire Bruce Trail and chronicling my journey. I can remember the exact day that I came up with Ontario Hiking. It was one week into lockdown and I thought that it would be fantastic to start a blog specifically about hiking in Ontario. If I couldn’t travel far, I wanted to explore all of the amazing trails close to home. I registered the domain and social media handles immediately and within 24 hours, Ontario Hiking was completely up and running.

THE ONTARIO HIKING SOCIAL MEDIA PAGES ARE INSPIRING, SPECIFICALLY THE WILDLY POPULAR FACEBOOK GROUP WITH OVER 40,000 MEMBERS. WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THIS SUCCESS TO?

I feel we’re all craving some time away from our computers, the Zoom calls, and technology. It’s also a safe way to enjoy the outdoors during a pandemic. I invest a lot of time administering the Ontario Hiking Facebook group and happily help people find hiking trails near them, and have created guides for trails around Ontario. I run a hiking challenge each season where I challenge members to hike at least five times during the month. At month end, they get a digital badge to show they’ve completed the challenge, plus a chance to win prizes from the Ontario Hiking shop. The group members really make it an awesome community. Everyone shares their photos, tips, and stories. If someone has a question, there will be numerous people stepping up to help.

AS A ONE-WOMAN OPERATION, WHAT MOTIVATES AND DRIVES YOU?

I love what I do and the variety of work. As a blogger and content creator, I wear many hats. I’m a writer, photographer, video editor, graphic designer, public speaker, social media marketer, and more. If I don’t know how to do something for my business, I’ll learn how to do it. I love connecting with other people in my industry and am lucky to have connected with many friends and colleagues through blogging. I’m in an amazing mastermind group with some inspiring female bloggers and we bounce ideas off one another and continually motivate each other - it’s fantastic!

YOU ALSO CO-OWN "JUSTIN PLUS LAUREN ADVENTURE AND KIND TRAVEL." HOW HAS THE PANDEMIC SHIFTED YOUR APPROACH TO RUNNING BOTH SITES?

I’m focusing mostly on travelling locally as we have so much to see and do in Ontario. I visited some fantastic destinations close to home like the Thousand Islands, Oxford County, Stratford and Brighton. We have several cute towns and great outdoor adventures. Plus, I love supporting and featuring small businesses throughout Ontario that could use our love during these times.

WHAT'S BEEN THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR AND WHY?

Helping people plan their trips and adventures. When someone hikes a trail

54 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

based on my blog post and has the most incredible day, it’s so wonderful and motivates me to create more content. When you reflect on those great memories in your life, you probably think about those incredible moments on vacation or spending time with loved ones doing something fun. I hope that my advice and ideas have helped! It’s rewarding to be your own boss and have full control over your life. If I feel like going for a hike on a weekday morning, I can do that as I make my own schedule.

WHAT IMPORTANT LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNED DURING YOUR JOURNEY?

It’s all up to you to be successful and earn a living. There is no hourly pay cheque when you are your own small business. There will be times where I’ll make more money from a contract and other times where I’ll make far less. You have to learn how to budget properly. I work way more than 40 hours a week; it's closer to 80! It doesn’t feel like work because I love what I do. There’s always more work to do, so it’s easy to work all the time. I am learning to get better at taking time off for myself, but it is challenging. Also, follow your gut and pivot where necessary.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING OVER THE COURSE OF BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

It literally took breaking my ankle and being couch bound for 10 weeks to realize that I could become an entrepreneur. Yes, that happened! In 2018, I broke my right ankle and I couldn’t drive or do anything. So, I stayed at home and worked entirely on my blog. I realized that I could make a living as a blogger once I started creating content full-time. I wish that I had enough faith in myself to make the leap to this before breaking a body part. It’s a scary thing to do, but it’s important to believe in yourself. I’m also grateful to always have had Justin’s full support behind everything that I do!

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE LOOKING TO ENTER THE ENTREPRENEURIAL WORLD?

Have multiple income streams. Don’t be afraid to pivot. Network with others in your industry. Continuously learn and teach yourself new skills.

IF YOU COULD PICK ONLY ONE PLACE TO HIKE IN ONTARIO, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

That is way too difficult to answer! For sentimental reasons, I’ll go with the Dundas Valley Conservation Area, as I grew up in Dundas and visiting those trails holds a special place for me. Plus, there are several interesting features, including a Victorian train station, old ruins, multiple trails, and I always spot wildlife when I’m there. ontariohiking.com MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021 55

Martha Adams Martha Adams is the author of Cleopatra’s Riches: How to Earn, Grow, and Enjoy Your Money to Enrich Your Life. After becoming an international bestseller upon its release in 2020, Cleopatra’s Riches is now available at select Costco locations, including South Mississauga and Brampton. In Conversation with Martha Adams, Certified Financial Planner, speaker, author and financial educator:

1. What made you want to write Cleopatra’s Riches?

I’ve always believed that a personalized experience around finances is essential because money is a human experience formed over time and through many layers of influences. That’s why I was passionate about humanizing the financial conversation in my practice. This is exactly what I did in my boardroom for 15 years, and I saw first-hand the positive change that was happening in the lives of my clients. It’s because of these positive results that I wrote Cleopatra’s Riches, to help more people by equipping them with the tools for a meaningful financial conversation. What I want to see is that the financial conversation becomes the most accessible, approachable and applicable dialogue there is. That is exactly what Cleopatra’s Riches works to create.

2. What do you want people to understand about your messaging?

This messaging is internally focused rather than externally driven. It’s common for the financial conversation to start with the “to-do lists,” the terms, or the jargon. I believe the starting place is internally – meaning it starts with you as an individual. Understanding who you are and what your influences are allows you to make more meaningful decisions about your financial path.

3. What effect is your messaging having on people?

One of the most humbling comments I get from readers is that they now see themselves in the conversation and that they have found their voice. Ultimately, they’ve developed an awareness of just how integral their relationship with money is in every area of their lives including their work, relationships and lifestyle.

4. What’s next in your journey as an author?

I wrote Cleopatra’s Riches to provide the tools for a renewed financial conversation. My path forward is to continue working to create awareness amongst individuals and within the financial industry. Through this, I’m working to normalize the conversation around finances, which leads to financial empowerment being redefined and personalized financial experiences that are meaningful. marthaadamsmedia.com MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021 57

SMALL BUSINESS PROFILE:

eyecademy In conversation with Dr. Stephanie Ramdass, owner of Mississauga’s Eyecademy. 1. What led you to launch Eyecademy? We often get caught up in the rat race and let goals and aspirations take a back burner. With the global pandemic slowing down life to a halt, I finally had time to prepare a business plan for an eye-care facility that offers specialty care to patients West of Toronto. Eyecademy officially opened its doors on February 1st, 2021. 2. What exactly does Eyecademy do? We are an optometry office that is more than “which is better, 1 or 2?” In addition to routine eye-care, we offer customized eye-care solutions for patients suffering from ocular surface disease, and myopia management for our youngest patients who are at risk for long-term vision loss due to rapidly changing eyeglass prescriptions. We also offer customized contact lenses that are uniquely fit for each patient, ranging from multifocal options to orthokeratology and complicated irregular corneal fits. 3. What's been the most rewarding aspect of what you do? I focus on restoring sight to patients who have the potential for improved visual quality. When a patient enters my exam room with dark sunglasses on and head down because of decreased vision and ocular pain they are experiencing, and then leaves the office with their head up and a smile, I believe there is no greater reward as an eye-care professional. 4. What's been the most impactful lesson you've learned as an entrepreneur? Behind every success story is a team that has your back. This success will not come overnight, but with the right individuals who share your passion to improve the quality of life for others and who provide constructive feedback, professional growth is inevitable. 5. Why did you pick Mississauga for your business? I provide specialty eye-care in downtown Toronto and saw a need for these type of services in Southwestern Ontario. eyecademy.ca is conveniently located in the prestigious Clarkson Village of Mississauga and allows easy access to patients via highways 401, 407, 403 and QEW, with a ground floor entrance and ample no-charge parking. 6. What makes Eyecademy unique? Our team focuses on the management of ocular health and rehabilitation of sight when possible. We do not sell regular eyeglasses, however our patients are given updated eyeglass prescriptions and are free to purchase their glasses from wherever they choose. We do offer spectacle solutions for slowing down the progression of myopia or decreasing debilitating light sensitivity. eyecademy.ca MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021 63

Audio Messages Until the pandemic, I hadn’t used this feature because there

were no restrictions on human interaction. With isolation, lockdowns and multiple waves, it wasn’t easy to flip from being able to see anyone at anytime to having strong (yet necessary) restrictions in place. I’ve always been a social person who’s been enthralled with the human voice and vocal communication. I enjoy conversations with others, hearing the inflections, contour, timbre and tonality of their voices. I was born in 1978 and grew up without cell/smart phones - all of my early communication was done primarily in person, save for a landline rotary dial telephone. I started using audio messages via iPhone last autumn as while living alone has its benefits, it can also become deafeningly quiet. No one in my world had ever sent me an audio message so my first test was with a close friend after I’d asked them if it was ok...boundaries, boundaries, boundaries. After a few exchanges, I texted a few more friends to ask them and then that circle expanded. The benefit for me was that I could hear their voices and felt a stronger connection to the conversation and them opposed to simply reading words in a grey text bubble. I communicated the same information that I would have via text; there was no filter or adjustments made there. And I found the messaging/conversations were clearer as text messages can have too much room for interpretation. It also got rid of the dreaded “lazy” texting of U, K, OMG, LOL. The drawback is that response times can be longer as the recipient may not be in a place where they can hear your

64 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

audio note. Or they may not be interested in speaking at the time - which is absolutely understandable. We communicate differently given the situation, location, feeling and mood. Overall, I’ve felt a resurgence in human connection via audio messages and will continue doing so (with permission, of course) in the post-pandemic world.

Video Messages Most of us are tired of video calls. Between work, family, friends and the peculiar world of modern dating, it’s become a bit much. Actually, it’s become a lot much. I use video messages in conjunction with text and audio messages as it’s an easy way to visually aid your message. For example…if I’m texting someone about what I’m making for dinner, I can share a short 20 second video showing the amount of ingredients I’m using and how cute my two cats, Jellie and Miles, are being at the same time. Or if I’m audio messaging Claudia about how the weather in Mississauga varies from hers in Vancouver, I’ll take a short video of my back yard. Or if there’s something wrong with my car, I can send a short video to my mechanic. Or if I wrote a new song, I can send the band a video clip of the guitar/piano/drum part to get the writing process started. If a picture is worth 1,000 words, video is worth at least quadruple that. Video messages aren’t meant to replace video calls; it’s simply enhancing a text/audio message. The drawback is that it can eat up a lot of storage space on messages with several video clips. Flip these up to the cloud as a solution.

Phone Calls It requires the most effort but yields

the highest engagement between participants. Schedules have to be coordinated, there has to be minimal distractions (cooking, watching the kids, homework, driving, etc.,) but if it can be done, there’s nothing quite like a real time conversation. I’ll ask before I call someone because I know that phone calls aren’t everyone’s preferred medium. Phone calls don’t have to be marathon events; they can be succinct as in some cases, a two-minute phone call conveys more clarity than a long exchange of text messages. The drawback is finding schedules that fit. The solution is to text them to ask when a good time is.

PANDEMIC LIVING

How To Get More From Life At Home The pandemic has impacted everyone. Working from home, higher stress levels, changes in family dynamics, have only added to the complexity of COVID-19. This places an even higher priority on the importance of practicing daily habits that promote your health and well-being. As Mississauga’s leading health and wellness clinic, High Point Wellness Centre (HPWC) is committed to working with you to care for, educate, and inspire their patients in their journey towards optimal health. With nearly 50 years of serving the community, they offer clinical services in chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage therapy, naturopathic medicine, nutrition, fitness, and virtual ergonomic assessments. Here are three effective ways to get more from a life and promote healthy living during the pandemic:

68 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

MAXIMIZING YOUR WORKSTATION SET-UP

Converting your bed or couch to your new workplace, with your laptop in your lap, is a recipe for back and neck pain. HPWC’s chiropractors and physiotherapists offer these injury prevention work-from-home ergonomic tips: 1.

To ensure proper neck alignment, raise the laptop (via laptop stand or books) so that your eye level lines up with the top third of the screen.

2. Purchase a regular size wireless keyboard and mouse. Position at a level that allows your elbows to hold a 90 degree bend. 3.

When sitting, make sure your feet have firm contact to the ground (this reduces force through the low back). Sit right back in your chair with your lower back is supported. If you have a budget for home office equipment, invest in a decent ergonomic office chair.

4. Keep everything within a forearm’s reach, especially your mouse. Avoid repetitive reaching, bending, or twisting while seated.

5.

Bring movement to your day by getting up every 45-60 minutes. Mini postural breaks will significantly reduce your risk of injury.

For those needing extra help, HPWC offers individual virtual ergonomic assessments.

BUILDING STRESS RESILIENCY

Stress management techniques have never been more crucial. HPWC’s Naturopathic Doctor suggests the following 5 strategies. 1.

Progressive muscle relaxation. Close your eyes and breathe slowly while you squeeze and then release each body part from the head down to your feet.

2. Kindness. Do something nice for someone. 3. Write a gratitude list. Make a list of the things that make you smile and bring you joy. 4. Laugher is therapeutic. Schedule time for fun. 5.

Create a stress relief menu. Practice at least one of the following actives a day: listening to a 5 minute meditation app, taking 10 slow deep breaths, listening to your favourite playlist, or taking a short power walk.

CREATING TIME TO MOVE 1. Movement is medicine. It is a fundamental ingredient for good health.

2. Put activity time in your calendar. Block and protect this time like you would an important meeting. Scheduling this is key. 3. Share your movement goals with a friend. Accountability helps. 4. Break up periods of sitting with easy stretching, stairs or a short walk. 5.

Book an At Home Virtual Workout Program with a HPWC personal trainer. See a chiropractor if pain is preventing you from moving well.

BOB McCOWN RETURNS

TO THE GTA AIRWAVES ON SAUGA 960 AM

by praveen amirtharaj Back in June of 2019, what a few people thought would never happen, happened. Legendary sports talk host Bob McCown left the show and a network he helped put on the map. Primetime Sports was the benchmark against which all sports shows in Canada were measured against. McCown walked away from a medium he dominated and ruled over the past 30 years. But his parting words prophetically proclaimed that this was not be a retirement but rather a pivot. A native of Columbus, Ohio, McCown began his radio career in 1975. He served as a public-address announcer for the Toronto Blue Jays’ first season in 1977 and was a television host on “Sportsline,” a landmark late-night sports highlights show. McCown has been recognized for his outstanding career and contributions to Canadian sports journalism at the Sports Media Canada Awards Ceremony in 2013. McCown, at 68 has been busier than ever since his departure from Rogers. His production company Fadoo Productions has produced award winning musical documentaries including one on RUSH and most recently, The Go-Go’s. Another one of his passions has been the wine industry, owning Stoney Ridge Winery in Vineland Ontario.

“Bob has defined a generation of what sports talk radio is to fans all across Canada while continuing to be the standard bearer in the sports broadcasting industry. We at Sauga960AM are extremely excited and honoured to have Bob join our family…” - Joty Pannu, CEO Sauga960AM. The Bobcat is back. sauga960am.ca

But broadcasting has always been McCown’s first love. It was always a matter of when not if he would ever return to the airwaves. After successfully launching a podcast, The Bob McCown Podcast last year, McCown finally found the right opportunity to return to terrestrial radio. After some preliminary talks with the usual suspects, McCown turned to a decidedly un-corporate upstart News Talk station based in Peel Region – Sauga960AM. Although it was an inevitable decision, it wasn’t an easy one but one he feels excited about, “After 40 years in media, I didn’t think I had it in me to be part of another start-up…. but Sauga960 offered me a unique opportunity to be a part of a dynamic team to reach a growing and diverse audience in the GTA.” Starting March 15, The Bob McCown Show returns to GTA airwaves with his longtime co-host John Shannon at the familiar 6p timeslot.

If you’re anything like me (a large crab masquerading as a man, desperately trying to keep his life together amidst a web of increasingly intricate lies), you’ve been feeling a bit lost lately. No, it’s not because pandemic life is a labyrinth of complicated emotions. It’s because WandaVision’s 9-episode run of magical hijinks and sitcom superheroics has come to an end. But fear not, true believers! There’s still plenty of mystery left to unravel in the town of Westview. Let’s take a look at the show's biggest unanswered questions.

Who is the Scarlet Witch?

Many viewers assume that Wanda Maximoff is the Scarlet Witch, since Agatha looks Wanda straight in the eye in episode 8 and says “Wanda Maximoff, you are the Scarlet Witch.” But don't sleep on Henry Cavill, who is rumoured to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Warner Brothers recast Superman.

Where did White Vision go?

3:1 odds he’s blowing off steam in Reno. 7:2 has him on his way to Tatooine for the Darth Maul grudge match fans have been demanding for years.

What’s up with Pietro?

Many were disappointed when Pietro Maximoff, played by X-men actor Evan Peters, turned out to be some deadbeat schmuck named Ralph Bohner. But not so fast. When it comes to mutants and the multiverse, WandaVision head writer Jac Schaeffer says to be patient. More mind-blowing reveals are on the way. And then there’s this: if you rearrange the letters in "Ralph Bohner,” you get “Bohn Ralpher” -- the alter-ego of notorious Silver Age villain Red Scare. Could Marvel really be resurrecting such an outdated and culturally problematic character?

How did Wanda and Vision have kids?

When a witch loves a robot very very much, anything is possible.

...WHAT NEX T? by john murray lewis |

photos by ashlee brown on unsplash

Where were Billy and Tommy at the end?

The show’s final post-credits scene suggested that the boys were reaching out to their mother from a dimension beyond space and time. Don’t fall for the misdirection. Billy and Tommy were probably just in a recording booth. Their lines would have been edited into the shot later.

What are the other Olsen sisters up to?

Believe it or not, the role of Wanda was played by all four Olsen sisters. Catch them next in the Netflix special Fullest House: Death of the American Dream.

What is the ship of Theseus?

During the climactic battle in episode 9, the Visions debate a philosophical thought experiment called “the Ship of Theseus.” Here’s the story in a nutshell: One day, Theseus was out sailing when he discovered the Island of Minotaurs. He disembarked and asked a Minotaur, “Whose island is this?” The Minotaur said, “This is the Island of Minotaurs. Whose ship is that?” Theseus said, “That is the Ship of Theseus.” I have no idea what Vision was getting at.

Where was Dr. Strange this whole time? In London, filming Dr. Strange 2.

Who is the mysterious “aerospace engineer” that Monica Rambeau mentioned?

His name is Deepak Chakraborty. He's from Michigan. There’s no doubt that WandaVision was THE television event of January-March 2021. For crabs like us, how amazing was it to finally see a character with a hard, red exterior struggling to fit in? I mean, men like us! Human men! Never mind! Let’s all just watch the Captains America and forget I said anything, OK?

variety is the spice of life…

AND YOUR HEALTH!

So many people see the pursuit of health and fitness as a chore akin to flossing your teeth. Whether you wake up one morning and stare at your reflection in the mirror realizing you’ve let those pesky pounds stick around over this whole year, your doctor tells you that you need to lose weight for medical reasons, or you simply want to see what you’re capable of by accomplishing with your health and fitness - most people tend to see the pursuit of better health as a burden. Sacrifice of foods you love, habits you find comforting and just generally trying to stay motivated 24/7 to focus on your new goal are all things people associate with a healthy lifestyle.

These endeavours can also serve to expand their circles, allowing them to meet new like-minded individuals who have made the same journey a priority in their lives as well. It is when this new way of being is no longer a foreign concept, no longer a deprived state of being but instead has become a new rich way of living that you will thrive in your health. Going to bed early, or turning down another glass of wine doesn’t feel like chore when the focus of an early morning bike ride awaits, and that glass of wine tastes way better after a hike. Find ways to spice up your fitness life and you’ll find the benefits run deeper than you could have imagined!

However as it turns out all of those things aren’t necessary to make meaningful improvements in your daily life and in your long term health. It turns out, most objectively healthy people don’t spend 7 days a week going to the gym. While attending a gym is often a central part of their routine they typically find other ways to stay active. Many people sign-up for races, join community sports leagues and find ways to reward themselves for the mindful development of their health by using their body for what it is intended - movement. Most objectively healthy people don’t follow heavily restricted diets. They allow themselves to enjoy wine and beer when the occasion calls for it. They’ll make trade offs with saving foods they love for when they’re able to enjoy them and make conscious effort to make better food decisions whenever they’re able. They learn new sports. Try new activities. Go for bike rides on nice days. Take tennis lessons with friends. Go for a swim. Hike a trail. The people with the best health and fitness develop skills, adopt hobbies and join in activities that both use and continually develop their health as a mere side effect of their participation. These activities often double as an outlet for stress, and serve as a source of adventure.

By Alex Cibiri, Element CrossFit Passionately improving the lives of those around him through an uncannily relatable approach to health and wellness, Element has been a hub in the growth of both CrossFit and the micro-gym industry in Canada. With a focus on creating lasting change through the pursuit of fitness and other meaningful life experiences, Element is changing lives through revolutionized personal and small-group training across both virtual and physical environments.

port credit love by corrie harding-keizs |

As one of Mississauga’s best-known neighbourhoods, Port Credit offers a unique lifestyle that can rarely be found elsewhere. With beautiful (mostly revitalized) properties surrounded by nature and outstanding new builds, Port Credit quickly set itself apart as a promising neighbourhood with an array of shops, restaurants, fine dining and other amenities that fit the needs of all resident categories; i.e. from families to empty nesters. As the jewel of Mississauga, the community appeals to several potential homebuyers from around the GTA.

Port Credit’s Growth & New Real Estate Development

Port Credit has always been known as a desirable place to live, but demand in this neighbourhood, and Mississauga in general, was certainly also spurred by the overdemand in Toronto which pushed many buyers out who then turned to nearby markets to look for alternatives. This led to a faster appreciation of real estate in nearby areas as well, and naturally, in highly desirable Port Credit even more than in other GTA communities. Soon, demand grew and new real estate developments and revitalization of older buildings were initiated making Port Credit strong and sustainable with huge

investment potential. Many new high-scale real estate projects which will feature condos, townhomes and semi-detached properties are still underway that will attract additional investors and homebuyers. One of the examples is West Village, the master-planned waterfront community which will be a mixture of residential, business and entertainment properties and facilities that will include townhouses and mid and high-rise condo buildings as well as a beach and waterfront park. The waterfront will be connected to Lakeshore Road with green corridors facilitating the movement of pedestrians, cyclists and cars. The masterplanned complex is not only going to target the most affluent residents, but it will also include a number of affordable housing units, which means that investors/homebuyers can land a property even with a more modest budget. The new Port Credit real estate projects will encourage new businesses and create job opportunities which undeniably will lead to a population increase.

Geographic Position & Transit Port Credit is extremely popular because of its proximity to Toronto via Queen Elizabeth Way and Gardiner Expressway. It takes only half an hour by car or GO train to reach the big city, and having many

residents who work in Toronto, is a huge advantage. Being close to the Toronto airport is yet another advantage enabling Port Credit to host international delegations and businessmen who visit once in a while. Port Credit will also be part of the new $1.4 billion and 20-kilometer long LRT (Light Rail Transit) project including 22 stops, and part of it in Port Credit will be underground. The project is expected to be finished by 2022 and will certainly enhance daily commutes.

Quality of Life In Port Credit

The small-town feel adds to the charm of this vivid community as well as the idyllic scenic nature views, parks and the water. A key asset of Port Credit is being a waterfront community with many nearby beaches. It’s ideal place for families, young professionals and empty-nesters who are looking for a peaceful, suburbanlike environment that includes big-city advantages. The quality of life with beautiful properties, all-around amenities and many green spaces, Port Credit's housing demand is on the rise, with both homebuyers and investors. BOOST YO It's BBQ season and we've got 10 ways you can boost your BBQ game from flavour to safety and plenty in between!

3. For that aromatic, smokey flavor,

1.

5. Preheat your grill for 15 minutes prior

To avoid losing juices during turning, always flip your meat or vegetables using tongs opposed to a fork and limit the number of “flips” on the grill to once per item.

2. Avoid pressing down on burgers

or chicken, steak, etc., while they’re grilling as it squeezes out the juices and dries out the meat.

88 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2021

soak hardwood wood chips in water for three hours and then put them onto your charcoals. Using a gas grill? Put them into your smoker box following the manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Save basting for the end so the sugars in your marinade or sauce won’t have time to caramelize or burn.

to cooking to ensure the right temperature is reached and to kill any bacteria. A wellheated grill sears foods on contact, keeps the insides moist and doesn’t stick. Searing also creates improved flavors through caramelization.

6. Even on a clean grill, lean foods may

stick when placed directly on the rack. Reduce sticking by oiling your hot grill rack with a vegetable oil-soaked paper towel: hold it with tongs and rub it over the rack.

7. After preheating, removing debris

is much easier by using your preferred grill cleaning tool to clean off remnants from prior meals. Get in the routine of scraping debris before and after each use.

8. Food safety is a top priority! Eliminate cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards, utensils and platters for raw and cooked foods. Refrigerate foods while marinating and never baste with the marinating liquid. Instead, make extra marinade just for basting. Interestingly, marinating also impedes the formation

OUR BBQ GAME of potentially carcinogenic HCAs (heterocyclic amines), which form when grilling poultry, red meat and fish. Marinating can reduce HCA formation between 92 and 99 percent.

9. Always check the internal

temperature before eating any type of meat via an instant-read thermometer.

10.

Reduce flare-ups by selecting leaner cuts of meat, trimming excess fat and removing poultry skin. Keep a spray bottle of water nearby to douse any flare-ups. The problem with flare-ups are that they cause carcinogenic PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) to form on your food causing a peculiar taste. They can also char the outside of food before the inside has thoroughly cooked.
