MODERN ARTIST:

Vanessa Vedia by jay kana

Mississauga entrepreneur, Vanessa Vedia, took an interesting route from professional insurance agent to creating her own successful media company, Vedia Media. She dabbled in photography leading up to 2011 and sporadically took a few courses. The first “a-ha” moment came when she was asked to do a photoshoot for a magazine she was freelancing at. Realizing an opportunity, she accepted and afterward she says “the pictures turned out really well and the client and I were happy so I decided invest more time to photography.” During this time, she was a full time professional insurance agent and while excited for what photography allowed her to do, stayed in the corporate world to balance both. From 2011 until 2013, Vanessa photographed weddings and the more she did, the more her confidence grew and awakened her inner entrepreneur. “Photography opened up an entirely different side of me and I really liked it” says Vanessa. She opened Vida Moments in May 2013 and her official launch party immediately translated into several bookings. “I’ve always had that creative side. Photography was the outlet that made me happy. I was content with finance but wasn’t fulfilled.” Keep in mind, she still had her full-time corporate job, which made for long days but she wouldn’t change the path she chose. In September 2014, after 15 months of balancing both, Vanessa left the insurance world and took a one-year Post Grad Program - New Media Journalism at Sheridan, where she discovered her love for video journalism. She won the Best Editor for a Documentary award in her class and, after graduating, was given a referral by her professor to work for CBC at Pan Am games. That experience opened more doors for her and enabled her to work with and help others, which is one of her core values. After graduating, she continued doing weddings and made many sacrifices to grow Vida Moments. Her new found passion for video journalism and videography became her motivation to expand her business and knowledge. She even took a part-time position at Henry’s Cameras to learn more about cameras, lenses etc. Simply put, Vanessa took her “maybes” and transformed them into “I can and I will.” She launched Vedia Media in January 2018 to pursue her goal of being an on-camera host, as well as continuing videography and photography. “It’s something I’m passionate about and am willing to do so I can continually improve” says the smart entrepreneur. Her advice to others? “The moment I started doing what I love, everything just fell into place so create your own opportunities and help others in your journey. Life’s so short: work hard, be dedicated and find a way forward.”

COME IN OUT OF THE COLD:

AGM PRESENTS TWO NEW EXHIBITIONS FOR WINTER! The Art Gallery of Mississauga is thrilled to present two new exhibitions of works by emerging and established Indigenous artists, working in a variety of mediums, including sculpture, photography, painting, video and installation. Be sure to visit the AGM soon to see these not-to-be-missed shows, opening on Thursday, February 22.

NIIGAANIKWEWAG

February 22 - April 15, 2018 Opening Reception: Thursday, February 22, 6 - 9 PM Guest curated by Rhéanne Chartrand, Curator of Indigenous Art, McMaster Museum of Art Curator’s Exhibition Tour: Saturday, March 10, 1 PM niigaanikwewag brings together the work of senior, mid-career, and emerging female Indigenous artists to celebrate past, present, and future generations and features works by Kenojuak Ashevak, Christi Belcourt, Rebecca Belmore, Joane Cardinal-Schubert, Vanessa Dion Fletcher, Rita Letendre, Tanya Lukin Linklater, Meryl McMaster, Caroline Monnet, Marianne Nicolson, Shelley Niro, Daphne Odjig and Olivia Whetung. Historically, within Indigenous art – much like in the larger art world – female artists have often stood in the shadow of their male counterparts in terms of recognition and accolade for their work, despite having consistently produced equally substantial, critical, and provocative bodies of work. Foregrounding kinship, niigaanikwewag presents contemporary works that both embody and express the relational ties Indigenous women have both to one another and to [our] Mother Earth. niigaanikwewag, which means “leader women” or “they who lead” (feminine, plural) in Anishinaabemowin, positions the female Indigenous artists included in this curatorial project as leaders within Indigenous art. niigaanikwewag is a one-year curatorial project bookended by two exhibitions that acknowledges and pays respect to the nonbinary feminine creative spirit that continues to birth Indigenous futurities in provocative and meaningful ways.

COMPETITION IS NOT JUST FOR SPORTS ENTHUSIASTS

by kimberley langen, CEO & co-founder, Spirit of Math Schools ®

“…and pencils down.” The contest is over. The room erupts with excited chatter. In the large hall, over 200 students from grades 3 to 12 have just completed writing one of Canada’s largest series of mathematics contests. These Spirit of Math students have opted to miss a morning of school just for the opportunity to compete in something they can get excited about – math. So many programs out there simply show students the answers to the questions or teach them how to calculate quickly in their heads. How many programs look at all the problems, determine the skill sets that are needed to solve them, and teach according to those skill sets? Are they effectively developing logical thinking and critical analysis skills so that multitudes of mathematical ideas and questions can be tackled? Knowing how to do this takes an unusual expertise, and has been perfected over the course of more than 25 years in the Spirit of Math program. The results of this method of teaching are outstanding.

With close to 900 placements on national mathematics honour rolls this year alone – an outstanding feat – Spirit of Math makes a great case for not just teaching to the test. From doctors to physicists to engineers, Spirit of Math alumni are changing the world as leaders in their communities. Although the foundational concepts of the Spirit of Math program are being taught in several prestigious private schools, including University of Toronto Schools and Crescent School, Spirit of Math is also offered to students in an after-school setting. Students studying with Spirit of Math, taking just one class a week, are propelled far beyond most parents’ expectations. In one parent’s words: “Just by sending my son to Spirit of Math once a week, his thinking has boosted him far above other students in his day school. I can’t believe what he can do.” Kimberley Langen is the CEO and Co-Founder of Spirit of Math® Schools. MISSISSAUGA ARTS COUNCIL: by mike douglas In 2018, the Mississauga Arts Council (MAC) looks forward to working closely with all of the City’s arts and culture groups, taking advantage of the new Culture Master Plan and with a revitalized sense of mission across the arts and culture communities. MAC has some new directions of its own to share. We look forward to producing arts business and marketing seminars, networking get-togethers for the visual and music sectors of the city’s arts populace. Last year was a consolidating one both financially and organizationally speaking for MAC. The 2017 MARTY Awards were the best ever and this year they are again scheduled for the Mississauga Convention Centre on Thursday, May 10. Nominations are now open! Just go to www.mississaugaartscouncil.com/ the-martys/nominate/ One of the traditional roles of arts councils, is policy research and advocacy for artists and policy developments in the form of well considered ‘white papers’ that help leaders see a better way forward to making innovations to arts supportive policies. Better rules for more opportunities for artist/performer

NEW DIRECTIONS FOR 2018

will assist the whole creative eco-system to do more than survive - to thrive. MAC looks forward to finding a way to fund this opportunity to make difference in 2018. This summer, MAC will begin raising money with volunteer work at Rama Amusement Centre to start building a creative project grants fund for distribution in 2019. We believe that making an ongoing competition for small grants available for potentially risky art projects to individual artists and unregistered groups would be an exciting initiative to stretch the realm of what’s possible in Mississauga. The end of Rogers Community TV removed a significant communications channel for local creatives in Mississauga, The Mississauga News has become a weekly paper and while magazines like this one help, there are no private radio or TV stations to present shared interests on popular platforms, consequently MAC will be searching for arts videos and creating video reports for sharing with local media so that they can tell dynamic, if little known stories of the creative spirit that’s more than alive in Mississauga.

With its unmistakable charm, excitement and captivating culinary choices, Montreal plays host to one of the largest winter festivals in the world; Montréal en Lumière (MEL) happening February 22nd to March 4th. MEL brings together over one million festival goers who enjoy and experience the joy of Montreal’s wonderful wintertime through a unique program combining performing arts, gastronomy, free outdoor family activities, and a full night of exquisitely original discoveries! I attended 2017’s festival and my four day experience was one of my travel highlights of the year. Here’s why you should attend this year:

DELECTABLE & DELICIOUS DINING

Each year, MEL features cuisine inspired by various regions with 2018 featuring captivating Côte-Nord, found in eastern Quebec, on the north shores of the majestic St. Lawrence River. The Institut de tourisme et d'hôtellerie du Québec celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2018 and joins the festival to offer an extraordinary series of gourmet events. Experience chef pairings of Montréal’s Finest Tables, activities, new discoveries, workshops, tastings and seminars. There’s also a plethora of talented chefs preparing fantastic food at remarkable restaurants throughout the 11-day festival, from cheese to truffles and plenty in between.

A FUN, FREE & FANTASTIC OUTDOOR SITE

MEL’s outdoor site offers a multitude of free activities, with the Quartier des Spectacles and Place des Festivals are transformed into Montreal’s essential winter destination. Enjoy the Ferris wheel, a zipline, curling, free shows, food kiosks and an exciting atmosphere. My favourite aspect is the breathtaking Illuminart exhibits, which fuses art, lighting and technology. Illuminart assembles projects by artists, creators, engineers, set designers, graphic designers and videographers and is widely enjoyed. Urban spaces come alive, becoming a must-see destination for creativity and inspiration through stunning creativity. Be sure your cameras and smartphones are fully charged as this is a photographic.

BY THE NUMBERS

>> 600+ Artists >> 226 Shows >> 41 Venues & Stages >> 19 Cheesemakers >> 1,600 Lighting Projectors >> 34 Festival’s Finest Tables >> 1 Great Road Trip >> 1 Short Flight From YYZ

SPECTACULAR SHOWS

Arts and culture take the spotlight in Montreal, through the MEL artistic program. This eclectic program showcases icons and new artists both locally and internationally. In addition to numerous musical performances of various genres, you’ll enjoy terrific theatre performances, circus acts and dance numbers.

NUIT BLANCHE

As the best-attended single-day event in Montréal, Nuit Blanche attracts over 300,000 nighthawks to experience a wild urban adventure and immerse themselves into the city’s cavernous culture. The Metro is open all night to help you dive into over 200 cultural activities, most of them free, spread throughout the city. The 2018 Nuit Blanche event promises to be dazzling at the least.

ONE TANK TRIP: a blue getaway by elizabeth wise |

photos courtesy of scott & elizaebth wise

“The Great Escape” is what I should have called this article. Because with two children – affectionately referred to as the energizer toddler and the “threenager” – my husband Scott and I were in much need of a kid-free getaway before the chaos of the holidays were upon us. So we filled up the tank of our VW Atlas and headed two hours North of the city to Blue Mountain Resort, located just outside of Collingwood at the South end of Georgian Bay. Along the way, we dropped the kids at their Grandparent’s and joyfully continued on through beautiful back roads to our destination. We had both been to Blue Mountain primarily for skiing and snowboarding, but since Scott has had two knee surgeries, we were going to be experiencing three days and two nights solely as tourists rather than participants. Personally, my only requirement for our getaway was to be able to stay in bed in the morning as long as I wanted. Since children don’t generally understand the concept of “weekends” or “sleeping in”, 7:30am is “hit-the-ground-running” time. Coming into Blue, we stopped at Sidelaunch brewery, one of our favourite microbreweries, for a pint before checking into the only boutique hotel at the resort. The Mosaic, which boasts a year-round outdoor pool and hot tub, offered us a chic and modern feel with very helpful and friendly staff. We spent the first evening wandering around the charming village of Blue, taking in the impressive display of Christmas lights that dazzled the storefronts and walkways in every direction. We had a hearty dinner to warm us up at MJ Byrne’s Irish Pub before heading back to the Mosaic to relax in the outdoor hot tub (which we enjoyed every day we were there!) Blue Mountain offered lots of alternative entertainment to just skiing/snowboarding, including tubing, a year-round luge track, Plunge Aquatic Centre and their brand new skating trail that winds through the trees at the top of the mountain. But since we were there specifically to relax, we spent the majority of our time exploring the village shops, driving to the top of the mountain to take in the view, and enjoying copious amounts of amazing food (including BeaverTails, fudge from The Olde Stanton Store and a massive breakfast at Sunset Grill). For our final evening we took the free shuttle from The Mosaic to The Pottery restaurant for dinner. We enjoyed a luxurious three-course meal including prime rib and creme brûlée while seated next to a towering fireplace in the middle of the cozy dining room. It was certainly a far cry from the normal chaos that meals with two children usually present. We were sad to see our mini-vacation come to an end, but knowing the mountains are only a couple of hours away from our beloved city makes it easy to start planning the next time we can drop the kids and escape.

THE YEAR AHEAD IN

MISSISSAUGA As Mississauga enters 2018, there are a lot of bright and exciting things ahead for our colourful and vibrant city. Here are a few things in store for Canada’s sixth largest city this year:

Municipal Elections

This October, we’ll see some changes to our leadership team with the upcoming October 22nd municipal election. Wards 1 and 7 are certainties due to the tragic, unexpected passing of community visionary and leader, Jim Tovey and Nando Iannicca’s decision to not seek re-election. Will there be other changes across the city? Perhaps. With candidate nominations beginning May 1, we’ll soon have a clearer picture of who you will and won’t see campaigning later this year.

The Hurontario LRT Breaks Ground

What has been pegged as the project that will transform the way Mississauga moves, the $1.4-billion LRT breaks ground later this

16 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2018

year as a massive undertaking to rebuild one of Mississauga’s primary arterial roadways. “This new community will be plugged into our growing regionallyintegrated transit network that will include the new 20 kilometer, 20 stops Hurontario Light Rail Transit and our extensive MiWay bus transit network,” says Mayor Crombie. Sure, there’ll be growing pains along the next few years but it is all part of the long-term vision and strategy to improve Mississauga’s mobility.

Inspiration Lakeview & Port Credit

The Lakeview development soldiers on with the community carrying Jim Tovey's vision and dedication to transform and revitalize Mississauga’s Lakeview lands. What will certainly be a shining gem, plans are moving forward to transform the lands into a multi-functional area, blending green space (nearly 40%), a waterfront trail, residential and commercial space and of course, create thousands of jobs.

“The Mississauga of the first 40 years will look much different from the Mississauga of the next 40 years.” - Mayor Bonnie Crombie A few clicks west, a similar process is being undertaken via the Inspiration Port Credit project, that sees the future of our waterfront, 1 Port Street East and the former Imperial Oil Lands. There’s still plenty of conversations to be had here but know that our waterfront will be experiencing changes for the better and betterment of our community.

Ninth Line Lands & the Churchill Meadows Community Centre

In the works for over four years, the Ninth Line project is starting to move closer to realization. In what could see plenty of mixed-use space (greenlands, residential, transit stations, open space, etc.) the decision process is happening now to shape the exciting future of Mississauga’s Northwestern Gateway. Breaking ground in November 2017 was the first step forward for the all-new Churchill Meadows Community Centre, built on 55 acres. The sports park will feature a series of domes, artificial turfs, multi-use trails while inside will see a 25-metre pool, therapeutic tank and aquatic-related rooms, gymnasium and meeting spaces. Expect doors to open in late 2020.

Britannia Farm Lands

We’ve finally got a vision and approved master plan for the 200 acre Britannia Farm Lands and is it ever exciting. While it won’t all be complete in 2018, the sooner-than-later plans for our new “Urban Farm” will see student focused environmental and agricultural programs, the establishment of landscape zones and the 32 acres of development parcel land should ideally generate some commercial and retail revenue, especially with the aforementioned LRT running alongside the land entrusted to us by King William IV.

Dundas Connects

At more than 17 km long and 4 km wide, the scope of the Dundas Connects project is examining and preparing of how one of our city’s primary arteries will be reshaped. Already hosting stores, businesses, parks, schools, churches, and neighbourhoods, thousands of people use it daily to get in and around the city. A land use and urban design vision will be looked at and opportunities for enhanced connectivity and the appropriate mode of transit are some of the items to be included in the presentation of the Master Plan later this year.

2018 HONDA

by jay kana With alternative fuel options no longer being viewed as a fad, Honda has released the newest member of its four-wheeled family; the 2018 Honda Clarity Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) for drivers of the Great White North. There’s a wonderful balancing act between the electric and gasoline motor, its modern yet conservative looks are easy on the eyes and yes, it qualifies for the massive $14,000 rebate in Ontario. We spent a few days behind the wheel in sunny Arizona to learn more about the Clarity and drove away quite impressed with this fuel-sipping PHEV sedan. Let’s start with the heart of the operation; the engine. There’s a 1.5-litre Atkinsoncycle four-cylinder engine, coupled with two electric motors. One is for drive and the other a generator and there’s a substantial 17 kWh lithium-ion battery. Using a level-two 220-volt charger, it’ll take only 2.5 hours to charge the battery. The standard 110-volt household outlet sees that charging time balloon to 12 hours.

18 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2018

What you get from this hybrid rig is up to a whopping 76 km of pure electric range and an overall driving range of electric-only driving range 547 km. Very importantly, the gas tank holds a measly 26.5 litres of 87 octane, resulting in remarkable fuel efficiency figures, which are a paltry city/highway/ combined 5.3/5.9/5.6 for L/100km Power-wise, Honda hasn’t skimped out here and gives Clarity drivers a combined 181 horsepower and 232 lb-ft. of torque. Three drive modes are at your fingertips with Econ, Normal and Sport, with the latter being a pleasant surprise to get added feel and fun out of the car. As most drivers will live in Econ/Normal, they’ll be happy with the response provided by the Clarity as it’s high torque provides plenty of oomph off the line, plenty of passing power all while sensibly minimizing fuel consumption. Yes, there’s (surprisingly smooth) regenerative braking included here as well as paddle shifters, which allow you to select the intensity of regenerative braking done

when lifting your right foot off the gas pedal. In essence, the Clarity can primarily be seen as a “one pedal operation” with brake application used sparingly. Speaking of the gas pedal, it’s divided into two parts. Pushing down past 80% will see a slight sense of resistance but one you push past that, the combustion engine kicks in for that added boost when you need it. It clearly is a hybrid vehicle but for the most part, it has the drive feel and characteristics of a gasoline vehicle. Honda has certainly found the right balance for drivers and the eco-friendly folks. Appearance-wise, the Clarity bears a striking resemblance to the Accord, which is certainly a good thing. There are slight rear wheel coverings to boost fuel economy via lowering wind resistance, LED lights throughout and 18” aerodynamic alloy rims. Add the low and wide stance and you’ll see just how much attention to detail went into the exterior design. Inside, in addition to the open-pore wood trim, the 8-inch display is easy to pull

a wonderful balancing act between <<< >>> the electric and gasoline motor information from, even if there isn’t a volume knob for the 180-watt sound system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, as to two USB ports and Siri Eyes-Free compatibility, along with heated front seats. The push button gear shifter frees up plenty of space up front, even if some folks find the new technology odd. There’s space galore in the Clarity and you can seat five adults with impressive comfort levels, save for that poor chap in the middle rear seat. But they’re still better off in this car opposed to many others. There’s a premium look and feel throughout Honda’s newest PHEV

and with clean design lines, it’s a standout factor for me. Safety sees the Honda Sensing technology come standard, which includes Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation Braking and Forward Collision Warning. The noticeable omission is Blind Spot Monitoring but that’ll probably show up in future year models. Trunk space clocks in at 439L and the leather seats and steering wheel are comfortable for short sprints or long hauls. All in all, the Clarity is a solid step forward for Honda’s future. The enormous

rebate coupled with stellar fuel economy, a sturdy driving feel and plenty of comfort will only help its popularity. Sure, you’ll miss out on a plethora of gas rewards points but the tradeoff is that you’re going further for much less compared to a traditional gas-only powered car. PHEV vehicles are continuing to flow into the mainstream and any resistance Canadians have to this “new-esque” style of vehicles will slowly but surely be reduced. There’s very little compromise to be had in Honda’s latest offering and that’ll shine plenty of Clarity for those who want the best of both worlds.

SIX THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING

YOU R

by sam mcdadi |

REAL

ES TATE

AG EN T

Selling your home isn't just a property transaction. It's a huge life event that demands smart planning. Unfortunately, the real estate market is largely unfamiliar territory for many homeowners and that is why selecting the best real estate agent is a must. Here are six things to consider when selecting your real estate agent: #1 INTERVIEW EACH POTENTIAL AGENT Working with a real estate professional who is experienced and trustworthy is the best way to ensure you sell your home for top dollars. I recommend interviewing each potential real estate agent you are thinking of hiring. Consider the fact you will likely be working with this individual very closely. Do you have the right chemistry? Do you like the individual? #2 ARE THEY IN GOOD STANDING? Established in 1997, the Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO) is a not-for-profit corporation that regulates the trade of real estate in Ontario in the public interest. On behalf of the Ontario government, RECO administers and enforces the Real Estate and Business Brokers Act, 2002 (REBBA 2002) and its regulations. Go to http://www.reco.on.ca/realestate-pro-search/ to search for the agent’s name to ensure they are registered and in good standing. #3 DETERMINE THEIR CREDENTIALS. Think of the interview as being like a job interview. You'd want to know that an employee had the necessary skills before you hired them, and the same goes for your Mississauga real estate agent. Your real estate professional ought to be experienced, professional and trustworthy and, in my opinion, they should: • Have a website where you can view their work • Have successfully sold homes in your area in the past • Work as a full-time real estate agent • Possess references you can contact and • Be educated above and beyond the minimum license requirements.

22 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2018

#4 WILL THEY STAGE YOUR HOME? Home staging is the process of getting a home ready to sell. It may include improving kitchens, bathrooms and other areas that increase appeal. Sellers should stage their homes so that they look appealing to the majority of potential buyers. Real estate agents who provide staging services—including furniture and accessories— are better equipped to portray your property in the best possible light. They also understand which improvements contribute to heightened sale prices and less time on the market. #5 ASK THEM IF THEY WILL MARKET YOUR PROPERTY. Staging isn't the only essential aspect of preparing a home for buyer attention. Your Mississauga real estate agent should have a marketing plan that reaches out to online and traditional buyers across the area and worldwide. Methods vary, but many effective advertising plans incorporate professional photos and walk-through videos, intelligent write-ups and open houses. Remember that you're not simply looking for an agent who produces all of these materials but rather one who uses them effectively to create a polished representation of your home. #6 ASK THEM TO WALK YOU THROUGH THE LISTING & SELLING PROCESS? One solid test of a real estate agent's knowledge is whether they can explain what goes into selling your home. Asking for this clarification is also a great way to remove some of the mystery and increase your own confidence. You've invested a lot in your home, so shouldn't your Mississauga real estate agent be equally invested in selling it? Learn more about the process by contacting Sam McDadi Real Estate today at 905-502-1500.

MODERN ENTREPRENEUR:

ElaineTimmins by jay kana Elaine Timmins, a lifelong Mississauga resident, has carved out a successful career by constantly moving forward and remembering to give back. As one of the first students in Ontario to receive a high school co-op placement, her career has been intertwined in finance, with stops at BMO, Dell Financial and a financial and equipment leasing broker. “I didn’t pick finance; the opportunity was there… I tend to recognize opportunities and more importantly, act on it” says Timmins. She always desired to be in real estate but timing wasn’t right, until recently. In spring 2014, Timmins decided to move forward with her desire and launched her real estate career with Royal Lepage Real Estate Services in South Mississauga. Though not quite four years, she’s impressively achieved the #1 Independent Residential Realtor status two years in a row for her office. She is also the recipient of the Director's Platinum Award for 2016 and 2017. Says Timmins: “It helps that I've had an entrepreneurial journey…I I don’t want to be good; I want to be great.” A strong addition to that is that she often takes courses to stay sharp and current and it’s a key aspect of her constant evolution.

"You can always learn something from someone; even if it changes your perspective on something. Always, always be listening.” A driving force for her entrepreneurial path was the flexibility to spend more time with her son and have an active role in his life and the result is a wonderful relationship with him. Timmins, who also has her Seniors Real Estate Specialist Designation, is passionate about giving back to the community as it’s an important component of her upbringing and lifestyle. She supports Operation Smile, which funds cleft lip operations in third world countries. This is especially

important to her as her son was born with cleft lip and has currently raised enough funds for ten operations. She also supports Armagh House with every sale she makes and hosts a yearly client appreciation event to acknowledge the support of her clients (which have turned into friends) through her entrepreneurial journey. To Timmins, it’s important to be respected within her industry as each sale has two agents involved and there are various types of personalities sitting across the table. She strives to consistently be professional, honest and ensure that her clients always come first. “If I can’t give my clients 100% of myself, it’s not fair to them. They’re trusting me with their largest investment and I need to be there for them.” Her advice for other entrepreneurs? “It helps to have an innate desire to help others. Always put the client first and be genuine about it. Realize there are many aspects of a business that need to be managed properly.

MISSISSAUGA:

The Year Ahead

by john murray lewis | photo courtesy of fanjianhua/freepik From January to December, 2018 is shaping up to be the most current year on record. So what's in store for Mississauga during our latest orbit around the Sun? It's impossible to say for sure, but we can hazard a few guesses... 1. SEASONS. An easy one, but worth calling out. Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter again... Mississauga's going to see it all in 2018. 2. MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. This year, I'm hoping for a tight race between Bonnie Crombie, a cardboard cutout of Bonnie Crombie, and the mysterious dark horse candidate, Herschel McScallion. Remember to get out there and vote on October 22nd! 3. A BETTER MIWAY. With 46,000 new service hours, Mississauga's public transit system will be getting a big boost in 2018. The catch? 40,000 of those hours are going to be spent doing sick burnouts in the Wally's parking lot.

24 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2018

4. THE HURONTARIO LRT. When Metrolinx finally breaks ground in 2018, Mississaugans will catch their first glimpse of the wild, untamed land that lies just beyond our northern border -- Brampton. But is it too little, too late? With a projected completion date of 2022, will the LRT be rendered obsolete by...

8. FINALLY, SWEET REVENGE AGAINST THE EMERALD ASH BORER. With $7 million earmarked for the Emerald Ash Borer menace in this year's budget, 2018 is the year we take the fight to them. Let's see how they like it when WE bore through THEIR trees!

5. HOVERBOARDS. Is this the year Michael J. Fox finally gets off his butt and cranks these babies out? What's that guy been up to since Back to the Future II, anyway?

9. THE MOST ANTICIPATED SPORTING EVENT OF THE YEAR. That's right! Mississauga is proud to host the 2018 Ontario 55+ Summer Games in August. Are you ready for some pickle ball?

6. POWERFUL EMOTIONS. This is just a personal wish from me to you, but in 2018 I'd like each and every one of us to discover at least five new sensual emotions inside our bodies. 7. MORE PODCASTS. Speaking of emotions, don't you just hate it when your former "friend" Craig adopts a know-it-all dog like Chad and they start a podcast together? I'm not jealous, Craig! And no one cares about your encyclopedic knowledge of Hungarian slang, Chad!

10. THE END OF DAYS. Remember when the Mayans supposedly predicted that the world would end in 2012? What a goof that was, right? Anyway, turns out they meant 2018. Something to look forward to!

THE Having spent a few years in a call centre in my early 20’s, I can relate to just how important Mississauga 311’s world is. During a recent visit, I gained a stronger understanding of just how talented, hardworking and passionate the team is in an intricate environment. Wendy McClymont, Manager of Mississauga 311, warmly greeted me and immediately noticed a huge “Appreciation Tree” on a large wall inside the front doors, which is constantly growing with compliments from callers. That’s a direct correlation to having several long standing team members through the simple principle of “consistently treat your team well and appreciate them often.” In a fast paced atmosphere, the low turnover rate is impressive, which speaks volumes to the workplace quality in their nearly 11 years of operation. There’s an active social committee and a supportive, fun and welcoming work environment. There’s even a “Quiet Room” for staff to utilize when the need to decompress. “We want this to be a fun work environment. Health and wellness is very important.” says Wendy. There are nearly 30 full time call center staff, including 3 information specialists, 1 staff analyst, 1 admin person, 21 Customer Service Agents, including 2 team leaders and 3 mobile staff that are full time. The team utilizes 12 different systems to answer questions from and constantly updating their knowledge database happens nearly daily, which ensures they’re consistently up to date to best serve our community. Being equipped for an average of 1,000 calls a day requires thorough training, which is about one year. Once a trainee experiences all four seasons, they’re better equipped to provide answers. Yes, it’s longer than most call centre training but it’s a thorough method to arm the team that’s a crucial city resource. The team recently earned an overall 91.3% satisfaction rating, which is a massive accomplishment.

ON MISSISSAUGA 311 by jay kana

“It’s a really big deal for a city our size and we’re happy our citizens are happy. We strive for excellence and want to deliver the ultimate experience. The city trusts us to deliver their messages accurately and consistently so customers are clear with what’s happening in their city. We have a very proud team that strongly believes in customer service and providing information with the least amount of call transfers.” says Wendy. One of the challenging aspects is that team members must be versed in all areas, knowing what’s in the knowledge base and where to find it through a network of different applications. From taxes to trees, parking to parades and everything in between, the 311 team has answers. As we’re quite multicultural, there’s a language interpretive service with over 40 languages. They also attend new comer and outreach events to help increase awareness. Between the internet and the Pingstreet app (with usage up 50% from last year) folks are increasingly finding answers on their own but as the call volume indicates, sometimes residents simply want to speak with someone for an answer. Wendy says ‘We’re happy to give residents the choice of how the want to connect with us, whether it’s online or through one of our talented team members on the phone.” There’s also a TTY line available at 905-896-5151.

Wendy closes with “We care, we help, we do our best to find the answers and resolve the issues. We’re a one stop shop for city information that’s seamless.” Here’s a fun fact, courtesy of the 311 team: the longest you’ll ever wait at a traffic light in Mississauga is 3 minutes. Who knew?

slow cooker apple turkey by laura qusen This slow cooker recipe is perfect for the winter’s cold weather. It’s a hearty and healthy meal and depending on how many you’re feeding, should leave you with plenty of delicious leftovers. The prep on this is fairly quick as our good friend the slow cooker does most of the work. INGREDIENTS

• 3-4 lbs of turkey, depending on the size of your slow cooker. Use dark or white meat to your preference or both. • 1 cup of chicken broth • 6 sprigs of fresh rosemary • 20-30 fresh basil leaves • 1 tablespoon of dried thyme • 1 tablespoon of dried sage

• 1/2 teaspoon of pink Himalayan sea salt • 1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper • 4 apples cored and chopped into 1” squares (Any kind will do, but I usually use Macintosh. I don’t peel them, but not everyone loves apple peel, so peeling is definitely an option.) INSTRUCTIONS

• Place all ingredients in your trusty slow cooker on low heat for 8 - 10 hours. • Serve with your favourite side of vegetables and as is the case in my house, also side of steamed rice. PRO TIP

Use the cooked apples as a sauce on top of the meat as they’ll have softened up nicely during cooking.

JORDAN,

you had me at Za’atar!

by brigitte hasbron

Jordan has always been synonymous with historical intrigue. Jaw-dropping images of archeological riches found in the Nabataean city of Petra to its captivating desert canyons are like nothing else I have ever seen; it’s simply breathtaking! I recently had the privilege of experiencing Jordan’s gracious, warm culture and its mesmerizing ruins. However, it was the food and the people that really won me over. I discovered that Jordan’s culinary flavours are derived from other Middle Eastern countries like Lebanon, Palestine and Syria, and that it is part of the Levantine cuisine with the main trait being meze. What’s meze? It’s an assortment of little dishes offered during a meal, such as tabbouleh, hummus and my favourite, baba ghanoush (an eggplant and tahini dip). From the hustle and bustle of Amman to the tranquil oasis desert of Wadi Rum, dinners typically consist of colourfully seasoned and delicious dishes served with the absolute warmest of hospitality. I was told that the Jordanian culture was best understood through its food. From rustic gourmet dishes of grilled lamb chops with aromatic rice and sizzling spiced ridden chicken with roasted vegetables to the addictive clay oven-baked bread and the array of meze, Jordanian culture was simply remarkable! These are just some of the many traditional dishes that will entice any foodie! For those venturing into the desert, ‘Zarb’, a traditional Jordanian dish of lamb, chicken and vegetables cooked in a hole over coals, is a unique and memorable cultural experience! Visiting a souk (marketplace) in Jordan is quite an experience and a must-do. Spices, herbs, coffees and teas are plentiful in the quaint market stalls. It’s also customary for vendors to offer you a taste of their blend of coffee or tea as you peruse the goods on display. Interestingly, Jordanian coffee, also known as Arabic

28 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2018

coffee, is predominantly mixed with cardamom and their delicious soothing tea is a typically a blend of black tea and sage. As I meandered amongst the souks, I was particularly drawn to the spices - a beautiful collection of striking colours, aromas and flavours. One particular spice, Za’atar or Zahtar, which is a blend of dried thyme, oregano, sumac, salt and toasted sesame seeds, has become ubiquitous throughout Jordan. It is commonly used in restaurants, sold and traded in souks and savoured in local homes. When used on bread with olive oil, Za’atar transforms its simple vessel (the bread) into a delicacy. A certain highlight was that I stumbled upon a spice merchant as I was hiking through the rose-red rock cliffs of Petra. There I was, standing on pebbles of sand set amongst the backdrop of one of the new Seven Wonders of the World completely enthralled by the historical flavours and traditions of Jordan’s culture. It couldn’t have been staged any better! The Jordan Tourism Board (www.myjordanjourney.com) provides travellers with a plethora of information regarding Jordan’s captivating culture and exceptional experiences.
