Unleashing Retro Charisma with Kawasaki Z650RS
Bike Features
Kawasaki Z650RS
Kawasaki Z650RS
Many thanks again to Alfs Motorcycles (particularly Mick/Dave) in Worthing, West Sussex for the loan of bike for the day.
I loved the looks and feel of the Kawasaki Z900RS (its now joint 2nd in my top 10 MCM/Naked bikes) and today I am taking out the baby brother the Z650RS, is my love still there for the younger sibling.
The Kawasaki Z650RS is a testament to the enduring charm of classic motorcycles. With its retroinspired design, it pays homage to the iconic Z650 model from the 1970s. The rounded headlight, fuel tank, and tailpiece exude a sense of nostalgia, while the modern touches ensure a contemporary riding experience. This, combined with the lightweight chassis, ensures agile handling and a smooth ride.
The braking system on the Z650RS inspires confidence, with dual front disc brakes and a single rear disc brake delivering strong and consistent stopping power. Riders can rely on the ABS system to prevent wheel lock-up, enhancing safety in various road conditions. Triumph Trident 660
Triumph is one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers in the world that continues its legacy of providing fun, agile & distinct motorcycles to enthusiasts all over the world.
The latest addition of Trident 660 has infused a new spirit and provided riders with an "entrylevel" Triumph that is every bit true to Triumph's DNA as it gets. The 660cc streetfighter/roadster has almost been developed from the ground up and it was only just recently that I really got a chance to test it comprehensively and safe to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the spritely character of the youngest Trident.
Although the Trident 660 is built in Thailand, but its superb built quality and minimalistic form allow it to remain true to Triumph's heritage. Triumph has done a great job at blending retro styling with contemporary needs making the Trident looks well-balanced & refreshing. Part of the reason behind the refreshing looks can be contributed to its street-racer &
naked style which, as we all know, is a category where Triumph really excels. The round LED headlight & a rather brief but cute rear end adds to the overall character & styling of the motorbike which I am sure you’ll also appreciate once you’ve got a glance at it upclose.
Let’s move on to the most important feature of the Trident 660, which, of course, is its powerplant. Unlike the majority of 600cc motorbikes available out there, the “baby” Triumph packs a 3-cylinder engine which, despite having one less cylinder churns out enough punch to make your day-to-day rides a fun experience. The sweet roar of the engine is also quite distinct and helps the British bike boast its unique identity. The power output is rated at 80 hp with 64 Nm of torque, both of which are readily available at mid to higher RPMs, which helps you explore the realms of the bike at a relatively early stage. The robust engine happily takes abuse while the six-speed gearbox effortlessly blends all the
gears, leaving no stones unturned for you.
Worthy to mention here is the fact that the Trident 660 weighs in at 190 kgs, which when combined with its 80 hp might feel a bit underwhelming in elevated areas or a racetrack, but I certainly didn’t feel that the bike would be better off with some additional horses or pulling power during my test rides in the extremely sunny Sussex countryside.
The Trident 660 is reasonably packed with electronic & mechanical aides that continuously assist in making the ride more enjoyable & seamless. Such aides include ride-by-wire throttle, non-switchable anti-lock brakes, two riding modes, switchable traction control & an optional quick shifter & autoblipper. The quick shifter works really well, the two riding modes – road & rain, are a blessing, especially in Britain’s unpredictable weather.
M.C.M. News www.mcmnews.co.uk 29th September 2023 19
The Triumph Trident 660 sits on a tubular steel frame and its ride is assisted at the front by Showa forks and at the rear by Showa's pre-load adjustable mono-shock. The non-adjustable & a bit harsh folks at the front are a slight bummer, but they surely did wonders when it comes to handling or slight lean angles. This is where the Michelin tyres also come into play, they provided ample grip on dry & wet surfaces. The chassis, developed from the ground up, has enough flexibility to let you go hooligan if you are in the mood to go wild.
Another feature that stands out is the ergonomics which is well set up. The round digital instrument cluster honors the tradition of retro Triumphs, albeit in a contemporary way and all of its controls are nicely laid out on the left
handlebar, whilst the settings too are quite intuitive. The riding posture is slightly similar to sports motorbikes but is far from being uncomfortable. The seat, placed at a height of 805 mm(31.7 inches), is welcoming for all age groups, being 5'8" (but with short legs I've been told) meant I was able to get both feet down when at the lights or junctions. The comfort level of the seat is at par or better than the competitors and the pillion seat is wide & comfy enough for someone wanting to take a short trip on it but would suggest the pillion grip accessory that you can purchase as an extra.
Whilst riding on motorway due to the nakedness of the bike (which I loved the looks) I was buffeted around a fair bit especially living by the seaside you get extra wind off sea. That said Triumph do supply
as an extra accessory a moulded fly screen which they say is designed to reduce wind fatigue.
Overall, the Trident 660 is a great motorbike for newbies & pros alike. Triumph’s impeccable build quality is there, the overall design falls nothing short of refreshing. You will walk away from the bike with a smile on your face. At from £7,395.00, Triumph’s latest package not only proves its worth but also offers a lot to those who want a quality British two-wheeler. I had the Sapphire black for this test which had the looks but I do particularly like the union jack detail on the grey model Matt Jet Black and Silver ICE and also features on the Silver Ice Diablo Red but these are £100 more from £7,895.00 (prices from official website)

This issue we have Fowlers Triumph’s Bonneville Build-Off 2020 winner
To commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE day in 2020, the team at Fowler’s Motorcycles used British army heritage as the inspiration for their build. Seamlessly combining a modern bike with a heritage feel, they used girder forks, canvas bags and big bars to pay homage to a past time. Army issue green was the clear colour choice for this beautifully crafted bike! The team also fully blacked out the engine and exhaust and added bullet hero bar ends. The addition of commemorative badges on the cases and clocks with genuine WW2 accessories completed this glorious tribute to a time gone by. Tony Crocker & Sam Upton are the Fowler’s Master Technicians behind this creation...

Review by Maja's Motorcycle Adventures - www.majasmotorcycleadventures.co.uk
Maja Kenney of Maja's Motorcycle Adventures spends her Slovenian tour testing out some RST Waterproof kit. The kit features RST Maverick Textiles, Pathfinder Touring Boots and Paragon Gloves kindly supplied for this test by RST Moto.
On this year’s motorcycle tour to Slovenia I had the opportunity to test the RST Maverick ladies jacket and jean together with their Pathfinder touring boots and Paragon gloves.
The textiles are cleverly layered and are suitable for all-year riding. The outer layer has air pockets that can be clipped open for summer rides as well as perforation on the upper body. There are four ventilation pockets, two on the leg and two on the chest area. You can wear textiles without any layers on those hot and sunny days.
The waterproof layer is separate and acts as windproof, too. It zips
neatly inside the main jacket and trousers the only downside is, if you get caught in the rain it’s not a quick fix.
There is a further layer for cold weather riding. A thermal layer that zips in either with the waterproof layer or on its own. The zips are cleverly layered so there is no bulging of the zips sitting too close together. As the inner layers zip into the jacket (and trousers) this means you still only need one zip to close the jacket fully.
Both, the jacket and the jean zip together around the waist to retain the warmth and keep the rain out.
The jean have a high back which sits nicely around the lower back. The waist is adjustable with two velcro straps which might need tweaking depending on how many layers you wear on a cold day. Together with stretch panels, it does make for a good fit. There are two hip pockets with zips.
The jean and the jacket feel a bit stiff for the first couple of wears but they do settle around your body nicely and feel very comfortable.
I felt the trouser leg could have been a tiny bit longer for me. The trouser leg in a size up was perfect for me but the rest of the jean was too big. Not an issue once you put the boots on just my personal preference. Of course, they come with knee protectors and the jean is CE Certified to Level A.
The jacket is well designed and contoured for ladies’ fit. Stretch panels, arm and waist adjusters offer further options to adjust the jacket for comfort and fit. It has several pockets, inside and outside of the jacket as well as a large one on the back of the jacket for storing larger items such as maps, documents or a spare pair of gloves.
The jacket closes with a zip and
the textile secures over it with velcro. This is a bit of an annoyance when the jacket is open and you are not riding. The velcro on the left cuffs tends to stick to the velcro next to the zip and so find your left arm getting attached to the jacket a lot. As the jean, the jacket is also CE certified to Level A and comes with Level 1 back protector, shoulder and elbow armour.Personally, I feel the sleeves are a bit too wide around the wrists, too. There is a velcro strap to tighten the cuffs but I find too much textile around my wrists makes it quite uncomfortable. It does mean that the gloves are easy to put on when I wear them inside my sleeves.
The boots are my absolute favourite so far. They really are waterproof. I mean proper, Welsh downpour waterproof. Top marks for that. The boots have two zips at the front, one on each side of the leg which means they are really easy to put on and take off. But more importantly, you can adjust how tightly you want them to fit around your calf. Boots are usually too wide for me but these are a perfect fit thanks to the design. They are incredibly
comfortable, too. I wore them for 5 days constantly on the bike and to walk around sights we stopped at. The soles have good grip and I felt secure exploring sights off the paved paths. My feet didn’t even feel tired at the end of the day.
The gloves feel soft and snuggly on the inside. They feel a little big on my fingers and I guess that’s down to all the padding and layers to keep my hands warm. I have summer gloves from RST which are designed for ladies, they are the same size and they fit perfectly. The Paragon waterproof gloves are not specifically designed for ladies’ hands and it shows in sizing. My pair are size 7 or extra small so anyone with smaller hands might find these too big. They are waterproof and they have certainly been tested in the wet!
Overall the whole outfit is excellent value for money. The jacket and jean are suitable for all-year riding, excellent for long touring trips, they will protect you from most weather elements and they fit well. The boots, gloves will keep you warm and dry in the colder months but will be too hot for the summer months.

AGV K6 Helmet
Maja Kenney of Maja’s Motorcycle Adventures tests new AGV K6 Helmet with many thanks to AGV UK check AGV UK for more info
My first thought when putting on the new AGV K6 helmet was “That’s a bit snug.” And it is but not to the point that it becomes uncomfortable. I expected the usual discomforts as you do with most new helmets. They need a bit of wearing in and some pressure on the ears, cheeks and that inevitable new helmet headache after a longer ride is to be expected. Surprisingly, there was none of it. My ears fit nicely inside and even with the speakers of my intercom system fitted there was no pressure on them. The cheeks don’t get too squashed, in fact, it feels almost as if it was pre-
worn for my head! On the first 100 mile ride, I did feel a little bit of that tension around the crown of my head but that went away after the next two rides.
It took a bit of positioning of the helmet at the right angle for comfort but once it was settled I noticed two things. How incredible light the helmet is and how big the field of view is. And in fact, these are two of the statements AGV claims it has worked on and made different on the K6. They sure delivered on their promise. The helmet weighs around 1.2 kg (2.7 pounds) and is made out of a carbon-aramid fibre shell. You notice the lightness of it as soon as you pick it up and you practically forget you are wearing the helmet once it is on your head. Not only is it incredibly light, but it
also offers the same level of protection that MotoGP riders enjoy.
The field of view has been improved, too and you notice that immediately. The horizontal and vertical field of vision have been extended to give you better visibility of your surroundings.
The visor comes with the Max Vision Pinlock 120 anti fog system which offers better visibility with its slimline edge design. In fact, you cannot see the edges of Pinlock at all once the helmet is on and the visor closed. I really like the visor’s lock system that allows you to lock the visor in place fully or leave a gap for air circulation whilst it is still held in place by the catch system at the front and not just relying on the side release

mechanism to keep in place.
The helmet is marketed at a sports-touring market but I miss the internal dark visor for touring days which I find invaluable in the ever-changing British weather. You can change the visor completely for a darker one but that leaves you with having to carry the clear one with you. Because of the snug fit the sunglasses don’t fit under the helmet which means you’ll have to explore another option for when the sun is in your eyes. It is ACU approved and carries the gold sticker so you can safely take it to a track day, too.
I’ve fitted my Sena intercom to the new helmet easily. There are cutouts for the speakers in the helmet but I did have to swap the microphone for the one that attaches to the helmet rather than the one on a flexible arm. The fit of the K6 is so snug that it doesn’t leave much space around the chin area. This meant my microphone
got caught and moved each time I put the helmet on. To adjust it you need thin and flexible fingers and I still struggled to find a place to settle on where it didn’t annoy me. A small change to make for the comfort and peace of mind that I am wearing one of the safest helmets on the market.
The interior of the helmet feels soft and smooth, it embraces your head with a soft cushion of comfort and safety that is also breathable. It has quick-release pull straps on each side in case of an accident and a shorter D-ring strap which means less flapping in the wind if you forget to fasten the end with the popper. There are five vents on the helmet, two in the chin area and three at the top of the helmet. Having tested the helmet in March you can feel the cold air coming through which gives me the confidence that it is working very efficiently and will do a great job on those hot days where you can’t feel the wind at all.
Speaking of the wind, the helmet is incredibly quiet. I’ve used it in heavy winds as well as still days and I was impressed how well it stood the test of a very windy day. Due to its lightness, it was less of a struggle to ride against the wind than what I’ve experienced in the past. And I could still hear the music clearly through my speakers.
I did get a few raindrops on the inside of the visor that was let in through the top vents when riding in the rain. The liner at the back of the helmet was slightly damp too, which is to be expected as it is exposed however, the inside of the helmet was completely dry at the end of the 40-mile journey.
When it comes to the graphics, this range isn’t the most inspiring one at the moment however, the red colour on them matches the wheels of my Ducati perfectly so I’m more than happy with my choice.

Bags of Touring Potential
Whether heading off for a weekend away or setting out on a more ambitious tour, most modern classics are more than capable of tackling the journey. For many riders the biggest challenge will be finding practical luggage that won’t ruin the bike’s appearance.
Plastic or metal cases will look out of place and require sturdy metal
frames that are permanently bolted to the motorcycle, while universal soft luggage, like throw-over panniers and magnetic tank bags, can scuff paintwork and are often a faff to fit securely.
Luggage manufacturers have recognised this problem and several now produce retro bags that combine vintage style with modern
materials. SW-Motech of Germany have taken things a step further, with a range featuring cleverly designed fitting systems, sold under the Legend Gear brand.
Using a combination of waxed canvas and robust Napalon synthetic leather, Legend Gear bags have a proper vintage look,

plus the durability needed for everyday use. PU coatings on the inside make them resistant to water, while a range of waterproof inner bags and rain covers will keep contents dry whatever the weather throws at them.
Both the Tail Packs and matching Side Bags can be fixed to almost any modern classic bike, using the universal saddle strap. Its military fixing system allows quick and easy height adjustment, so they
can be fitted securely and at a height to suit the bike's design. Saddlebag prices start at £292.96 for a set of two 9.8 litre Side Bags plus SLS strap and a 17.5 litre Tail Bag is £125.95.
Taking things a step further, discreet Side Carriers can be bolted to the motorcycle, allowing Side Bags to be attached using a quicklock system. Bike-specific kits for the BMW R nineT, Triumph Bonneville range, Moto Guzzi V7,
Ducati Scrambler, Royal Enfield Interceptor and Kawasaki Z900RS are available now. A pair of 2 x LC2 Side Bags and Carriers for the Z900RS sell for £485.95. For easy carrying off the bike, a matching Shoulder Strap can be clipped onto either side or tail bags, and the LR1 Tail Bag even features rucksack straps.
