MODE Global Advisory: Port Strike Over

MODE GLOBAL ADVISORY:

WHAT WE KNOW HOW WE CAN HELP

There is now a tentative agreement in place between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX). The USMX has agreed to the ILA’s lowered ask of a 61 5% wage increase over six years; however, there has been no movement on the semiautomation language as of yet. While the port strike is over for now, the master contract is only extended through January 15, 2025; should the USMX and the ILA not come to a complete agreement and sign a new multi-year contract by then, we could see supply chain disruptions again in the new year.

The strike may be over, but impacts will likely be felt over the next two weeks as it’s estimated that the three-day work stoppage will take about 15 days to clear. This slowdown will likely impact holiday shipping through November, according to Sea-Intelligence, so as sighs of relief blanket the nation, shippers should still be working through their alternate plans to ensure shipments reach their destinations in time for holiday shopping.
