Collections for a Cause Returns with Etchings by Howard Marcus

Beauty, inspiration, and support for a charitable cause—that’s a trio that’s hard to beat. And all three are embodied in Etchings by Howard Marcus, fabrics that evoke the past, while doing good in the present.

Etchings is the latest Collection for a Cause, a series of fabrics based on antique textiles from the quilts and mill book collections of Moda’s president, Mark Dunn. The very first Collection for a Cause honored the memory of Pam Wieland, a Moda sales rep who succumbed to ovarian cancer, and benefitted Gilda’s House, a social and emotional support community for people with cancer. Since then a portion of the Collections’ proceeds have benefited groups as varied as Habitat for Humanity, 4-H Clubs of America, and Alzheimer’s research. More recently, the Collections have supported quiltrelated organizations including the Quilt Alliance, International Quilt Museum, National Quilt Museum, and others.

This year’s Collection benefits the Parkinson’s Foundation (www.parkinson.org), which works to study and treat a disease that affects many, including folks affiliated with Moda. “We’re a pretty tightknit family here,” says Josh Dunn, Moda’s VP of Development. “Many employees have been here the majority of their working years and are ingrained

in the fabric of our lives. When something affects one person it affects us all and we want to make the biggest impact we can to support these people.”

By Choice and By Chance

The 2023 Etchings collection is the result of serendipity, according to Moda’s design director Jamie Chupik. Quilters were clamoring for another Collection at the same time they were requesting

a repeat of 2011’s Etchings, designed by Moda’s in-house team 3 Sisters. “The opulent tones of the collection are a nod to the original fabrics,” says Jamie. “The rich reds and pretty warm aquas, the grays and stones are exactly the same in this collection as in the first Etchings.”

A collage-style fabric that mixes imagery from antique architecture books and text—a signature look for 3 Sisters—was reintroduced but updated to reflect the collection’s focus on Parkinson’s disease. Motivational words including compassion, optimism, and calm are affixed to labels from vintage bottles, and text includes the signature of the scientist who discovered Parkinson’s disease and a quote from Shakespeare on friendship. There are also words from one of the best-known Americans diagnosed with Parkinson’s, Michael J. Fox:

“One’s dignity may be assaulted, vandalized, and cruelly mocked but cannot be taken away unless it’s surrendered.”

Combined with the text is imagery including a tulip, recognized by Parkinson’s organizations as a symbol of optimism and hope, and a tree representing growth and strength. “It’s got a spiritual quality, adds variety and dimension, and sets the tone for the entire group,” says Jamie of the elaborate collage.

Something Old and Something New

Some pieces in the line include reprints of Etchings originals in different colorways. A text print from Wuthering Heights, a 3 Sisters favorite from 2005, features excerpts from the novel. There are other lush prints and the line includes a 108” wide back and a floral on Mochi linen, perfect for bags, home décor, and pillows.

Collections for a Cause is a project near to Mark Dunn’s heart, and over the years he’s enjoyed recreating fabrics and quilts from his collection.

“My intention is not to restore the past, but to carry it forward through the artwork and style of the period,” he says. That goal, combined with the elegant and fresh 3 Sisters designs and a focus on improving opportunities for advocacy, research, and care for those with Parkinson’s makes for a combination that’s hard to resist.

In homage to the original Etchings collection we have worked together to curate this line of opulent florals and jacobean designs from our antique mill books and textile archives. Together we created a signature collage print of vintage ephemera lavishly layered with affirmational text, etched architectural renderings, damasks, and botanical elements which share our message of hope and strength. While we hope this beautiful piece will lift the spirits of all, it was created to help raise awareness for Parkinson’s Disease and contains special imagery relating to this cause such as tulips and uplifting quotes, one from a famous Parkinson’s survivor.

Silhouettes keeps in mind the look of Holly Taylor Designs but in very different exciting new colors for us. I am in the process of completely revamping my bedroom. I want it to be serene and calming. I can't wait to do a quilt with shams and lots of pillows in these colors and prints.

When I look at all of these creamy “low volume” prints together, I immediately imagine what it would be like to rummage around in my grandma “Babcia’s” vintage linen cupboard or to smell the clean laundry on the line in the backyard. Introducing my newest adventure, the EYELET basic fabric rainbow. You might recognize it as my favorite little print that I have used in the last 4 collections. You guys have loved it and asked for it as it has always been the first fabric to sell out from each collection!! So here it is. Dandi Duo is the sister collection to Dandi Annie, one of my favorite groups with big white dandelion seed puffs and lots of childhood memories. The beautiful and dreamy weeds are still growing strong and back for another season of blowing wishes to the wind. The main print in Dandi Duo features the big dancing seed puffs along with golden blooms that have yet to turn to seed, backed by big pink circles and flowing leaves. A simpler illustrated “Dandi Toile” and dandelion paisley coordinate with the group, as well as “Little Bitties” of simply sketched blooms and a “Cross Stitch Stripe” for a linear companion. “Flyaway Seeds” is a delicate print of seedlings in flight. With each collection I create there is a story to tell. Dinah’s Delight begins with an antique quilt that was really two finished quilts that had been cut up to create a new quilt in the early 1800s. I was fascinated by the construction, wondering if the quilts were cut apart to hide them from the enemy, or if they were the salvaged parts of damaged quilts.

The name comes from Dinah Crisler Carpenter (1762-1836), my fifth-generation removed great grandmother.  Born in Culpeper County, Virginia, Dinah married Samuel Carpenter, who fought alongside their fellow Virginians in the Revolutionary War, and eventually had fourteen children.

Dinah’s Dilemma recreates the magic of the antique quilt, while Gentleness reflects the colonial life of a reverend’s wife. I hope this collection of beautiful prints inspires you to tell your story in a quilt.

Like many, I was raised watching reruns of Bonanza, a show about a father and his three sons living on a large ranch called The Ponderosa set in the 1860s. What I most vividly remember is the intro with the map burning away and the father and three sons riding their horses with the iconic music in the background. My latest collection Ponderosa was inspired by this iconic retro cowboy imagery.

This collection celebrates the cowboy life with various unisex themed prints including retro horse scenes, horse silhouettes, horseshoes and more.. In keeping with the retro theme, the color palette is burnt orange and gold, avocado green, brown and turquoise. In addition to the prints there are two fabric panels, a horse and stable playset and a multi square panel perfect for quilt samplers and pillows.

When asked to create a line of seasonal retro towels, the first thing that popped into my head was my grandmother and what kind of tea towels she would have had in her kitchen. I thought about her famous lemon meringue pie. Her delicious strawberry shortcake with real whipped cream. The eggs she would get from my Uncle John’s chickens on the farm. The epic 4th of July parties she would throw every year for her family. Or all the kids sitting around the TV watching The Rifleman or Gunsmoke. Watching my teens venture into the world of crushes and flirting makes me realize just how much has changed since I was younger--and how much has stayed the same. Gone are the days of waiting next to the family phone, replaced by heart emojis and instant communication from anywhere you may find yourself. But the butterflies feel the same, and finding someone to love is just as lovely as it has always been. XOXO is my tribute to those awkward first conversations, brave dance invites, and if you're lucky--the true love that booms after those moments and can last a lifetime. I met my sweetheart/ husband when I was just 15--the same age my twins are now--so this collection makes me a bit nostalgic. I hope it brings fond recollections for you, too. I had a lovely day learning how to make cyanotypes with Dr Cathy Corbishley Michel and am now obsessed with the magical process of saving the shadows cast by flowers and leaves.

Firstly, you gather your flowers, then lay them onto the prepared cloth and wait whilst the sun shines down on them. It’s only when the cloth is washed that the ethereal Prussian blue images start to develop right before your eyes. It’s a beguiling process!

Bluebell features my floral cyanotypes in every shade of blue with gentle greens layered with a subtle lace texture, a musical score and a flowing vintage calligraphy script. Bluebell and the quilts I make with it will forever remind me of those warm days playing in my garden with the sunshine and flowers.
