Montgomery County is located on the northern border of our nation’s capital. The communities of Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Silver Spring, Rockville, Gaithersburg and Germantown are all located within the boundaries of Montgomery County. To the north of Montgomery County you will find Baltimore, to the east is Annapolis and to our immediate south is Virginia.

The Capital Bikeshare offers thousands of bicycles for rent at more than 300 stations in Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Virginia.

BY AIR Three airports serve Montgomery County: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), 20 miles. Metrorail’s Red Line connects the airport with Montgomery County for easy transfers. Many hotels provide shuttle service to and from Metro stations. Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), 30 miles. Complete shuttle and limousine service is available.

Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport (BWI), 40 miles.

Car rentals, limousines and shuttles are available. Note: Distance to airports are from Rockville, Montgomery County’s Seat.

BY TRAIN Amtrak: Intercity rail passengers service the Union Station (Washington, D.C.) and BWI Airport into Rockville Metro station, Hungerford Drive and Park Street. Metrorail: 13 Red Line stations serve Montgomery County, all leading into Washington, D.C. For more information visit www.wmata.com. Montgomery County offers a truly comprehensive transportation system.

If you want to see the sites of Montgomery County and Washington, D.C., hop on the Metro, one of the most sophisticated mass transit subway systems in the country. The Metro is clean, safe, easy to use, very affordable and will get you to the landmark or museum of your choice in minutes. The same is true of the Metrobus system which offers routes on every major thoroughfare.

BY CAB/CAR SERVICE Green Tomato Cars is a car service featuring hybrid vehicles with free WiFi on board.

Barwood Taxi has served Montgomery County since 1960, and features Verifone technology with credit card payment and video on board.

RMA Worldwide Chauffeured Transportation has the largest fleet of sedans, SUV’s, limousines and minibuses in the Washington D.C. area.

BY BUS Vamoose Bus offers direct service to New York City from downtown Bethesda.

BY WATER White’s Ferry is the last ferry operating on the Potomac River. It connects Leesburg, Virginia to Montgomery County. The ferry runs continuously, year round, from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Flooding and ice can close the ferry.

For pricing and up-to-date conditions, call them at 301-349-5200. From Virginia: Take Route 7 West to Leesburg. Take Route 15 North. Make a right on Route 655/White’s Ferry Road.

INTERCOUNTY CONNECTOR (ICC) The Intercounty Connector (ICC) links existing and proposed development areas between the I-270/I-370 and I-95 corridors within central and eastern Montgomery County and northwestern Prince George’s County with a state-of-the-art, multi-modal east-west highway that limits access and accommodates the movement of passengers and goods. Passengers may access the ICC with use of a pre-paid EZ-Pass. Further information is available on http://www.iccproject.com.

Additionally, as home of the National Institutes of Health, National Library of Medicine and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, it is one of the leading biomedical research centers.

SEE – Bethesda is one of three Arts & Entertainment Districts, and it’s easy to see why! The Music Center at Strathmore houses a 2,000-seat concert hall and The Round House Theater hosts 200 performances a year. Got the blues? Enjoy a dinner and live musical performance at the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Club.

ENJOY – Downtown Bethesda is home to many annual events. The Taste of Bethesda is a renowned food and music festival featuring more than 50 delicious Bethesda area restaurants. The Bethesda Fine Arts Festival is a two-day art fair featuring 140 booths of fine art and fine craft along with the best local bands in the region.

TASTE – Take control of those “hunger pangs” in one of downtown Bethesda’s 200 restaurants. ENJOY – Large scale retail meets small town feel at the Rio Washingtonian Center. Take a ride on the brand new carousel overlooking the lake! Kids of all ages can go paddleboating while the adults take a stroll along the lake.

TASTE – Pick your own produce at Butler’s Orchard in Germantown and taste a truly fresh strawberry, blackberry and any berry in season! Stop by the community market and buy a homemade pie, apple butter or freshly picked produce.

Montgomery County has three designated Arts & Entertainment Districts: Wheaton, Silver Spring and Bethesda – more than any in the entire state!

Visit the F. Scott Fitzgerald Gravesite located at the historic Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Rockville.

In Glen Echo, visit the Clara Barton National Historic Site and learn about the Civil War nurse who went on to establish the American Red Cross.

The issue of transportation was never more important than in America’s early years. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, a project which took 22 years to build, stimulated economic growth in little towns along the towpath of the canal. The C&O Canal was considered an engineering marvel in its day and continued operation until 1924. The remains of the beautiful canal trails are now traveled by nature enthusiasts and bikers throughout the year.

Step back in time and take a self-guided tour of the Underground Railroad. This 2.0 mile trail is natural surface and includes interpretive sign markers keyed to the trail map. Trail stops include Woodlawn Manor and Barn and the Sandy Spring itself. One half-mile north of the spring is a 300 year-old Champion White Ash tree.

The Montgomery County Historical Society, located in Rockville, operates two museums and a research library. The Beall- Dawson House, an elegant circa 1815 Federal-style townhome, displays the history and heritage of Montgomery County. The Stonestreet Museum of 19th Century Medicine investigates the changes in medical practice from 1852-1903, the years Dr. Edward Stonestreet practiced medicine in this one-room, freestanding doctor’s office.

White’s Ferry is a cable ferry service operating across the Potomac River. It is located six miles west of Poolesville and is the only ferry still operating on the Potomac River. In Poolesville the Seneca Schoolhouse Museum still stands. Once a one room school built of seneca sandstone.

The Monocacy Aqueduct is a restored 174-year old seven-arched aqueduct that spans 516 feet in length over the Monocacy River. Listen to an interpreter talk about the aqueduct and its history. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the view.

The Go Ape treetop adventure course is made up of 6 zip lines (including Maryland and the USA’s first skateboard zipline) numerous rope ladders, 44 crossings to include the Stirrups and Twister and 2 tarzan swings.

The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring is the largest aerial forest adventure park in the nation. Soft LED lights create a magical experience at night with evening zipline sessions.

The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Park has beautiful canal trails for hikers and bikers. The canal is now traveled by nature enthusiasts, bikers and hikers throughout the year.

A National Park Service Visitor Center at Great Falls offers exhibits, spectacular views of the Great Falls and entry to Riley’s Lockhouse.

The Maryland SoccerPlex is located on the grounds of the South Germantown Recreational Park. Discovery Sports Center hosts a number of national sports tournaments. The park has an indoor pool, adventure playground, archery range, golf driving range and basketball courts.

The Capital Crescent Trail is a popular trail from Georgetown, D.C. to Silver Spring, MD suitable for walkers, joggers and bikers.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Go for a scenic drive through the Agricultural Reserve, an area with 93,000 acres of preserved farmland in northern Montgomery County.

Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard is nestled in the rolling hills of Comus at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain.

Visit the organic market and vineyard at Rockland’s Farm in Poolesville.

Brookside Gardens is Montgomery County’s incomparable, award-winning 50-acre public display garden situated within Wheaton Regional Park.

For the community market experience, visit Butler’s Orchard in Germantown, where for more than 50 years the Butler family farm has been producing fruits and vegetables. They also offer pick-your-own tours and seasonal events.
