The 28th Mock Convention has received unparalleled support over the past four years. We would like to extend a gracious thank you to our donors and supporters, Washington & Lee University, the Lexington community, and all of our speakers and guests.

MOCKCON What is Mock Con? The Washington & Lee University Mock Convention is a mock presidential nominating convention held every four years by the students of W&L. Its goal is to predict who the party out of power will nominate to run for President of the United States. As the most accurate political mock convention in the nation, our goal is to promote civic activity and political engagement in the W&L community and beyond.

This cycle we worked to create an accurate, unique, and memorable convention for Washington & Lee students while preserving the rich legacy of Mock Con and emulating values of the Republican party.

Mock Con’s History Mock Con began in 1908 when presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan announced a visit to Lexington, VA, sparking interest on W&L’s campus. The Forum, the campus’ largest political club at the time, hosted a replica of the upcoming Democratic Convention to honor the visit of Bryan and to heighten the excitement of the student body.

The accurate prediction of Bryan as the nominee cemented Mock Convention as one of the core features of the Washington and Lee experience.

What to expect?

Convention Weekend is the culmination of years of preparation and research. Aiming to accurately replicate the Nominating Convention of the party out-of-power in the White House, the 2024 Cycle is a Republican one. Convention Weekend includes a parade through downtown Lexington, world-class speakers, and most importantly, the nominee prediction. Fifty-six student state delegations draw from the latest polling data, the insights of analysts, and the acumen of onthe-ground contacts in each constituency to predict the distribution of delegates for their states and territories.

Session 4 February 10th | 3:00 - 6:30 P.M. EST. Speakers: Governor Asa Hutchinson and the Ruthless Variety Program Session 4 will also contain deliberation by the state delegations and the reveal of the prediction.

Session 1 KRISTEN ANDERSON Pollster, published author, and co-founder of Echelon Insights Kristen Soltis Anderson is a pollster, speaker, commentator and author of “The Selfie Vote: Where Millenials Are Leading America”.

Through Anderson’s extensive research on Millennial polling trends, she possesses unique insights into Millennial attitudes that will shape the coming decades of American politics. Kristen is the co-founder of Echelon Insights, an opinion research and analytics firm, a Former Fox News Contributor, and the host of Sirius XM’s “The Trendline with Kristen Soltis Anderson”.

CHARLIE KIRK Founder and CEO of Turning Post USA Charlie Kirk is the Founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to rallying, organizing, and empowering students to advocate for principles of freedom, free markets, and limited government. Charlie is deeply involved in America’s cultural and ideological battles, offering a consistent, unapologetic perspective rooted in his conservative and freedomoriented point of view.

CANDACE OWENS Founder of the BLEXIT Foundation and host of the “Candace Owens Show” Candace Owens is the founder of the BLEXIT foundation, an organization dedicated to driving conservative principles into urban communities. She is also a published author, speaker, and host of the weekly “Candace Owens Show.” Owens exploded onto the scene in the summer of 2017, gaining notoriety through her political vlog series on YouTube. With over 250 Fox News appearances, Owens is a leader among the growing youth conservative moment.

Session 2 MIKE POMPEO 70th Secretary of State of the United States and Director of the C.I.A. Michael R. Pompeo served as the 70th Secretary of State of the United States, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and was elected to four terms in Congress representing the Fourth District of Kansas. As our nation’s most senior diplomat in the Trump Administration and President Trump’s chief negotiator, Mike helped to craft U.S. foreign policy based on our nation’s founding ideals that put America First.

His new book, which released in January 2023, includes stories from his heart detailing his time as Secretary of State and C.I.A. Director.

MIKE ALLEN Co-Founder of Axios Mike Allen is a co-founder of Axios, a news and information platform focusing on business, tech, politics and other topics shaping the future. Mike was a co-founder of Politico, where he created the Playbook franchise and helped build the company for its first decade.

He is also an alumnus of TIME, The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and The (Fredericksburg, Va.) Free Lance-Star. Allen is from Orange County, Calif., and graduated from Washington and Lee University.

JOHNATHAN HAIDT Social Psychologist at NYU’s Stern School of Business Johnathan Haidt is a social psychologist at New York University’s Stern School of Business. He Received his Ph.D. from he University of Pennsylvania in 1992. Haidt’s research examines the intuitive foundations of morality, and how morality varies across cultural and political divisions. Haidt is the author of “The Happiness Hypothesis” and of the New York Times bestsellers “The Righteous Mind” and “The Coddling of the American Mind.”

CHRIS MILLER Former Secretary of Defense Miller was a public servant for 34 years in the Army and the national security apparatus of the United States. His service culminated as the Acting Secretary of Defense of the U.S. where he oversaw the military’s $720 billion budget and successfully led its two million service members and 700k civilian employees through one of the most tumultuous periods in American history. He is the CRO for DZNYE Technologies and advises the private equity firm, Highlander Partners.

Session 3 GLENN YOUNGKIN 74th Governor of Virginia After earning an engineering degree at Rice University and his MBA at Harvard Business School, Governor Youngkin and his wife Suzanne moved to Northern Virginia. As a newcomer to politics, he ran, won, and now shapes policy on commonsense solutions to kitchen table concerns. So far, he’s passed the largest education budget in Virginia’s history, facilitated waves of economic investments and business expansions to reinvigorate job growth and opportunity and has totally transformed the way government works for its citizens.

DONALD TRUMP JR. Executive Vice President at The Trump Organization Donald J. Trump Jr. is an innovator and leader in today’s young business world. As an Executive Vice President at The Trump organization, Donald Jr. works to expand the company’s real estate, retail, commercial, hotel and golf interests. He is involved in all aspects of the company’s development, from deal evaluation, analysis and pre-development planning to construction, branding, marketing, operations, sales, and leading. In addition to his real estate interests, Donald Jr. is an accomplished an sought after speaker.

BRIAN KEMP 83rd Governor of Georgia On November 8, 2022, Governor Brian P. Kemp was re-elected to serve a second term as Georgia’s 83rd governor. His experience as a small business owner has driven his mission to put hardworking Georgians first since taking office as Georgia’s governor, and his leadership yielded historic results. Throughout his first term, Georgia has consistently broken economic records with jobs and investment coming to every corner of the state in communities large and small.

WESLEY HUNT U.S. Representative for Texas’s 38th Congressional District Wesley Hunt was born and raised in Houston, TX in a military family and is a proud alumnus of St. John’s School. Wesley’s service included one combat deployment to Iraq and two deployments to Saudi Arabia, where he served as a Diplomatic Liaison Officer. Wesley is a lifelong conservative and is an active member of the community who has dedicated his time in military service and volunteer work to protect our country and improve the Houston area.

Session 4 ASA HUTCHINSON 46th Governor of Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson is a former Republican candidate for President of the United States. He served as the 46th Governor of the State of Arkansas and in his last election, he was re-elected with 65 percent of the vote, having received more votes than any other Republican candidate for governor in state’s history. As a candidate for President, Hutchinson distinguished himself as an advocate for balancing the federal budget, energy production, and enhanced boarder security.

Mock Con Meets Main Street Inspired by the Republican Party’s dedication to small businesses, Mock Con adopted the Mock Con Meets Main Street initiative. Mock Con has been able to build of the university’s preexisting, strong relationship with the Lexington and Rockbridge communities. Through this initiative, Mock Con has recognized the importance of local small businesses and the essential services they provide to the University community-- as well as employ many students.

Since the pandemic, Lexington businesses have shown immense resilience and still provide high-value products amidst the current economic crisis.

Mock Con challenges the W&L community to actively commit to supporting the local small businesses and is dedicated to strengthening these relationships and giving back to these establishments.

From the “Town Meets Gown” Presidential Gala, celebrating historic Lexington to the Parents Weekend Auction and the generous donations received, Mock Con has utilized local businesses for many events this cycle and wants to extend a gracious thank you!
