BEYOND VISION

Rappelez-vous, nous étions en 2012 (une éternité !) et le moteur de recherche ultra dominant de la Silicon Valley lançait ses fameuses Google Glass, une des innovations technologiques qui devait révolutionner le monde. Trop tôt, trop cher, trop intrusif, ce concept avorte deux ans plus tard. Plus exactement une mise en parenthèse de la part de Google qui n’a pas dit son dernier mot : la version 2 de ses lunettes s’adressent prioritairement au marché des professionnels. Reste que de nombreux compétiteurs s’activent à convaincre le grand public de l’intérêt de telles lunettes connectées. L’aspect trop gadget détourne les utilisateurs même les plus geeks d’entre eux. Le réseau social Snapchat, fort de ses 178 millions de membres, avait lancé en 2016 ses Spectacles pour prendre des photos et des vidéos : un flop ! Mais l’entreprise ne désarme pas avec une V2 plus performante sortie cette année, et une V3 attendue en 2019 intégrant une puce GPS… A suivre.

Remember, it was back in 2012 (ages ago!) and Silicon Valley’s ultra-dominant search engine launched its famous Google Glass, one of the technological innovations that was expected to revolutionise the world. As it came too soon, was too expensive and too intrusive, the concept was scrapped two years later.

More precisely, this was Google putting the concept on hold, as it hadn’t finished with the idea: version 2 of its glasses is aimed primarily at the business market.

Many competitors are still busy trying to convince the general public of the interest of such connected glasses. The gadget-like appearance puts even the most geeky users off. The social network Snapchat, with its 178 million members, launched its Spectacles in 2016 to take photos and videos: it was a failure! But the company kept on fighting and released a more powerful V2 this year and a V3 incorporating a GPS chip is expected in 2019‌ Worth keeping an eye on!

Les lunettes connectées se scindent en deux segments : les lunettes de réalité augmentée qui consistent à insérer des personnages et/ou éléments dans le paysage, et les lunettes intelligentes destinées à assister le porteur qui peut lire son agenda, être guidé par un GPS en temps réel ou recevoir des informations directement sur les verres à l’aide d’un petit écran. Il y a quatre ans, les prévisions de ventes de lunettes connectées étaient estimées à 10 millions de paires en 2018.

Il semblerait que nous sommes loin du compte, sachant que les différents acteurs en présence (Google, Intel Epson, Microsoft, Samsung, Sony, Magic Leap, Everysight, Garmin, ODG, Vuzix…) restent discrets sur les chiffres de ventes.

Connected glasses can be divided into two segments: augmented reality glasses, which consist of inserting characters and/or elements into the landscape, and smart glasses, which are designed to assist the wearer, who can read his diary, be guided by a GPS in real time or receive information directly on the glasses via a small screen. Four years ago, sales forecasts for connected glasses were estimated at 10 million pairs in 2018. It seems that we are still some way off this, bearing in mind that the different players involved (Google, Intel Epson, Microsoft, Samsung, Sony, Magic Leap, Everysight, Garmin, ODG, Vuzix, etc.) remain discreet regarding the sales figures.

Les avantages des lunettes connectées pour les entreprises sont réels et multiples. Dans le cas d’activités de réalité virtuelle exigeant une capacité de diagnostic, de même que la résolution de problèmes complexes, l’usage de ces outils peut réduire la présence d’experts sur le terrain, pour favoriser plutôt la collaboration avec des ressources à distance pour des interventions directes en utilisation « mains libres ». Munies d’une caméra haute définition, d’un micro, d’un récepteur audio et d’un mini écran dirigé par commande vocale, il suffit d’une simple connexion Wi-Fi pour qu’elles soient opérationnelles. Avec ces outils, il est possible de filmer ce que l’on voit, d’afficher des informations sur les verres, en surimpression sur les images réelles du champ de vision.

The advantages of connected glasses for businesses are real and multiple. In virtual reality activities requiring diagnostic capability, as well as complex problem solving skills, the use of these tools can reduce the presence of experts in the field and encourage collaboration with remote resources for direct “hands free” intervention.

Equipped with a high-definition camera, a microphone, an audio receiver and a miniscreen controlled by voice command, they only need a Wi-Fi connection to be operational. With these tools, it is possible to film what you see and to display information on the lenses superimposed on the real images of the field of vision.

D’après une étude de l’Institut de l’avenir de l’humanité de l’Université d’Oxford, de l’Université de Yale et d’AI Impact, en moins de 50 ans, l’intelligence artificielle surpassera les humains dans toutes leurs tâches… Plus qu’une technologie de rupture, l’intelligence artificielle est un ensemble de techniques (machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing...) qui entrent dans nos vies et dont l’impact sur tous les secteurs de l’économie ne va faire que croître. Spécialiste du sujet, le mathématicien Cédric Villani en est convaincu, selon lui, elle « va devenir une des clés du monde à venir ». L’occasion de voir au-delà de la vision avec des lunettes intelligentes.

According to a study by the Institute for the Future of Humanity at the University of Oxford, Yale University and AI Impact, in less than 50 years, artificial intelligence will have overtaken humans in all tasks… More than a disruptive technology, artificial intelligence is a set of techniques (machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, etc.) that are a part of our lives and whose impact on all sectors of the economy will only grow. A specialist in the subject, the mathematician Cédric Villani, is convinced of this. According to him, it “will become one of the keys of tomorrow’s world”. This is an opportunity to see beyond vision with smart glasses.

Le terme vient de l’armée : l’avant-garde étant la garde avancée, les soldats que l’on envoie devant les légions principales, des militaires en première ligne engagés sur un territoire risqué et indéfini pour défricher le terrain de bataille (et prendre les balles…). Avec le temps, cela a acquis un sens secondaire symbolique : une avant-garde ouvre des voies nouvelles en rupture avec le passé, en rejet d’une forme d’académisme jugé trop codifié.

The term comes from the army: the avant-garde was the advanced guard, the soldiers that were sent out in front of the main legions. These front line soldiers were engaged in a risky and undefined territory to clear the battlefield (and take the bullets). Over time, this term has acquired a symbolic secondary meaning: an avant-garde opens new paths that break with the past, rejecting a form of academism that is considered to be too codified.

« La notion d’avant-garde en art a été forgée au début du 19e siècle par des penseurs utopistes dans une perspective d’émancipation sociale. Dès 1825, Saint-Simon établit un lien entre l’artiste et son rôle émancipateur dans la société », explique l’historienne de l’art Marie-Josèphe Bonnet (in Revue Itinéraires septembre 2012). Ajoutant que « dans la deuxième moitié du 20e siècle, dans son après coup, la notion d’avant-garde s’imposera comme nouveau principe d’autorité validant les différents courants qui se succèdent à partir de l’impressionnisme. » En dehors de l’art, le design, dans sa dimension pluridisciplinaire, adopte une conception nouvelle des objets et de l’environnement avec des mouvements avant-gardistes comme UAM (Union des Artistes Modernes) en France, Bauhaus en Allemagne, De Stijl aux Pays-Bas… Des mouvements modernes qui établissent une esthétique jouant sur une vision futuriste, à la fois fonctionnelle et rationnelle, claire et pure. Dès les années 60, des couturiers — Christian Dior, Courrèges, Pierre Cardin, Yves Saint Laurent, Emmanuelle Khanh… — bousculent le monde ouaté de la couture, ils portent un regard oblique sur la rue et les étoiles pour habiller leur époque qui rêve d’émancipation esthétique et de jeunesse. Dans la foulée, l’apogée du plastique libère la créativité de lunetiers et de designers gagnés par des envies de modernité avant-gardiste.

Des personnalités passées et actuelles, devenues des marques référentes, réveillent alors la lunetterie : Alain Mikli, Barbara McReynolds et Gai Gherardi (l.a. Eyeworks), Kirk Originals, Cari Zalloni (Cazal), Jean-François Rey, Hugo Martin (Parasite), Linda Farrow, Michael Birch, Oliver Goldsmith, Pierre Marly, Robert Laroche, Serge Kirchhofer, Wim Somers et Patrick Hoët (Theo), Ralph Anderl (IC ! elon la dernière étude mondiale Shopper Observer II Havas Paris/OpinionWay, les clients recherchent du confort, de la confiance et une extrême fluidité dans leur expérience d’achat en magasins. Une perception liée à la montée en puissance du digital qui modifie le rôle des magasins sans pour autant les anéantir, même si le trafic dans les points de vente physiques baisse de 10% chaque année depuis 5 ans. Pour preuve, 44% des consommateurs éprouvent de moins en moins de plaisir à s’y rendre tous types de commerces confondus. According to the latest global survey from Shopper Observer II Havas Paris/OpinionWay, customers are looking for comfort, confidence and extreme fluidity in their store purchase experience. This is just one perception related to the rise of digital technology that changes the role of stores without destroying them, even though traffic in physical retail outlets has dropped by 10% each year for 5 years. As proof of this, 44% of consumers experience less and less pleasure in going to physical retail outlets (all types of stores combined). Traders therefore need to reinvent their role by strengthening their expertise, their sense of contact and their ability to make you want to spend time in their stores. Especially since, according to the Shopper Observer II survey, 72% of customers “are becoming less human with the development of digital tools and artificial intelligence”. Customers like human contact as it reassures them.

Without ignoring the fact that customers are more fond of physical stores than digital commerce: 71% of the people questioned wanted all products to be available both in stores and on the internet. This figure rises to 82% among 1824 year olds...

In the optics industry, the standardisation of stores and the supply creates a form of indifference among customers. Optical stores are usually places where people feel forced to go, rather than destinations or shopping places. Realising that the issue is clearly proximity and humanisation, opticians are reinventing store designs with differentiating decors and enabling services. Eyewear designers open brand stores in which the graphic and dreamlike world tells a story and makes for a global experience.
