Selon la Word Design Organisation (WDO), « le design est une méthodologie de résolution de problèmes qui permet de piloter l’innovation, développer la réussite des entreprises, menant à améliorer notre qualité de vie. » Le design s’impose par une approche globale qui stimule l’imagination. Mais l’esthétique ne fait pas tout, limitée à une approche décorative, de même que l’innovation technologique ne fait pas tout non plus.

Tout est une question d’équilibre entre ce qui se voit et ce qui se ressent, entre le visible — le style — et l’invisible — la technologie —.

According to the World Design Organisation (WDO), “Design is a problem resolution method that drives innovation, develops the success of businesses, and leads us to improve the quality of our lives.” Design asserts itself through a global approach that stimulates the imagination. But appearance is not everything, since it is limited to a decorative approach; and likewise, technological innovation is not everything either. It is all a matter of balance between what you see and what you get, between the visible – style – and the invisible – technology.

Dans le domaine de la lunetterie, le design doit donner forme à une vision, à des lignes dans le but d’embellir la vue. Les producteurs de lunettes, petits et grands, artisans et industriels, s’activent pour montrer leurs différences stylistiques et démontrer leur capacité créative.

In the eyewear industry, design must give shape to a concept and lines in order to make vision more beautiful. Eyeglasses manufacturers of all sizes – from craftsmen to industrials – work hard to show their stylistic differences and demonstrate their creative capacities.

QUEL STYLE POUR LE WHAT IS THE STYLE OF THE 21ST CENTURY? Chaque siècle, chaque décennie a généré une esthétique marquante. Il suffit de regarder dans le rétroviseur de l’histoire. Entre 1895 et 1910, apparaît le « Modern Style », balayé par l’Art déco dans les années 1920, suivi par le Style 40 plus polymorphe, le fonctionnalisme des années 50 avec la naissance et la démocratisation du style « design », etc. Les décennies suivantes, 60, 70, 80, 90…, sont chaque fois marquées par une esthétique en miroir de la société, le témoin des évolutions sociales, politiques, culturelles…

Each century, and indeed each decade, has generated a marked aesthetic. A glance in the rear-view mirror of history reveals this reality. Between 1895 and 1910, the “Modern Style” emerged, before being swept away by Art Deco in the 1920s, followed by the more polymorphic ‘40s style and the functionalism of the ‘50s, which heralded the democratisation of “designer” style, and so on. The following decades – the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, for example – were each marked by an aesthetic style that mirrored the society of the time and reflected its social, political and cultural developments, among more.

En ce début du troisième millénaire — bien amorcée tout de même ! — sommes-nous dans une continuité ou dans une rupture ? A la différence des périodes précédentes, « ante internet », la diffusion des tendances et des courants esthétiques était plus longue et moins globale. Depuis, les réseaux sociaux ont modifié la temporalité et la spatialité des tendances dans un mouvement d’accélération et d’ubiquité. Une déferlante qui tente de démoder un existant pour nous tenir en haleine consommatoire. Conséquence, on peut parler d’éclatement et d’instabilité stylistique où il est difficile de cerner les contours précis d’une esthétique propre à l’époque.

L’essence des temps actuels, son carburant, est ce sentiment d’urgence fébrile qui nous saisit. C’est tout le débat de l’obsolescence programmée dans le domaine des nouvelles technologies par exemple. Cette accélération fiévreuse couplée avec un doute sur l’avenir où la notion de progrès est fortement contestée sous nos latitudes, incite nos contemporains à se réfugier dans le passé.

Pour preuve, le mouvement vintage et néo rétro qui ne cesse de se réinventer. Dans le domaine de la lunetterie, ce mouvement est encore présent dans une dimension fonctionnaliste où les montures rassurent par des lignes classiques contemporaines. C’est en quelque sorte, la mémoire du style. Face à cela, un design impulsif apporte une fraîcheur inventive où les créateurs bouleversent les lignes et les volumes, font des tentatives stylistiques sans règles définies. Une liberté créative d’autant plus importante que les contraintes sont et seront de plus en plus fortes. La pression de l’écologie qui marque le 21e siècle va obliger à penser éco-design, il faut intégrer durabilité et recyclage, usage et utilité et… esthétique ! Le style du 21e siècle sera celui de l’impulsion contrôlée : séduire sans (trop) détruire, avec des lunettes qui voient plus loin que le bout de notre nez…

At the beginning of this third millennium – although it’s no longer the very beginning! –, we might ask whether we are continuing along these lines or undergoing a paradigm shift. In the previous, “pre-Internet” periods, the spread of trends and aesthetic movements took a longer time and was less global. Since then, social networks have modified the time and space parameters of trend-setting, heralding acceleration and ubiquity. A tidal wave that is attempting to continually whisk the existing style out of fashion to keep us in consumer suspense. The result might be seen as a stylistic dispersal or instability, since it is difficult to determine the precise outlines of the aesthetics of our time.

The essence of the present time – what drives it forward – is this restless sense of urgency that has a hold on us. The whole debate on planned obsolescence in the field of new technologies is an example of this. This feverish acceleration, along with doubts about the future – where the concept of progress is being strongly contested in our parts of the world –, are inciting our contemporaries to seek refuge in the past. For example, the vintage and neo-retro movement continue to reinvent themselves. In the eyewear industry, this movement is still present in a functionalist dimension, where frames with classic contemporary lines are considered reassuring. In a way, this is the memory of style. On the other hand, an impulsive design is providing inventive freshness, and designers are challenging the conventions of lines and shapes, making stylistic experiments with no hard-and-fast rules. This creative liberty is made even greater by constraints that are, and will become, increasingly more present. The pressure of ecological concerns so characteristic of the 21st century will oblige designers to think in terms of eco-design, integrating sustainability and recyclability, combining usage with utility and... Aesthetics! The style of the 21st century will be one of controlled impulsiveness: enjoying without destroying (too much), with glasses that enable us to see further than the ends of our noses...

Sport actif et sport leisure entrent sur un même terrain d’entente où la performance, le confort et la mode se confondent pour des looks urbains à l’esprit sport.
