A message from the Director of the Master of Science in Education-Trauma Informed Educator Track
The prevalence of trauma can be seen across every school setting. Data continues to emerge and change, however it is clear that over half the children in America have experienced at least one type of trauma – translating to nearly 35 million children. Currently the data shows 70% of adults have experienced a traumatic event –translating to 223.4 million individuals. Some studies show even higher rates. These numbers indicate that educators working with students from the youngest ages beginning in preschool through college-age students will encounter the impact trauma can have in the school setting. Our co-workers may also have traumatic experiences that impact their daily lives. Because of this, working with learners in the trauma courses, from those just starting their careers, alongside experienced educators, has been a godsend. Hearing the stories and reflections from implementing traumainformed practices is such a blessing, as the benefits to not just the students they are working with but also to the learner and the entire school community are presented. The compassion and relationships we build with students goes far beyond the classroom. The following Bible verse is one I often think about for this work: 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.
