Community Connection - Listening, Learning and Understanding…
I have spent a significant amount of time getting to know the people that are our staff through one-on-one meetings and listening lunches and have also thoroughly enjoyed opportunities to meet and greet our students and families through a variety of different forums.
Nothing brings me greater joy than conversations with students before, during or at the end of the school day, during learning activities when I undertake classroom visits, whilst on excursions or at school events and/or brief encounters when just in passing.
Each and every conversation that I have with internal and external community members supports me to understand the traditions of our school, what we are currently doing well today and what opportunities exist for continuous improvement tomorrow.
It is a genuine honour to be appointed as the 5th Principal of Moama Anglican Grammar. I feel privileged to join the School Community and am excited to have the opportunity to serve our students, staff and families.
During the course of Term 1 my number one priority has been relationship development and establishing community connection.
To me, relationships are the keystone of high-performance learning environments, strong school culture and are the foundation of trust.
The process of listening for understanding is enabling me to formulate a 360 degree view of our school from our greatest asset – our people. Engaging the voice of our students, families, staff and members of the broader school community is essential to support my contextual understanding of future improvement opportunities for Moama Anglican Grammar.
Mid-year I very much look forward to sharing my vision for the future direction of our School, in alignment with Strategy 20202024 and will outline a selection of exciting strategic initiatives that will enable this vision to be realised.

Delaney’s Hitting Wickets!
Year 12 student and School Captain Delaney Laffy has had a dream run so far this year playing cricket. Delaney, who currently plays A Grade in the women’s league and C grade in the men’s league for Echuca Cricket Club, was selected for the NSW CIS Secondary Open Girls Cricket with 12 other students from across the state, after trying out in Sydney in February. Picked as an emergency, Delaney was not sure that she’d get out on the field. When she got called up to play in the tournament in Barooga, she was thrilled.
Delaney is a pace bowler, and she gave it all she had against the NSW combined high schools’ and Catholic schools’ teams during the tournament from 28 February to 2 March. The vast majority of players came from Sydney, with Delaney being one of the few from a rural area.
Delaney’s team blitzed the competition, winning each match and emerging undefeated. To top it off, Delaney was named Player of the Tournament after her impressive bowling performance. Finishing the carnival with 11 wickets at an impressive average of just 4.5, Delaney was undoubtedly the stand-out of the competition.
Delaney only started playing cricket at age 11, but she’s now been selected for the NSW All Schools Team (made up of the best players from the carnival) and will play in Coolangatta, Queensland in September.
What an outstanding achievement – congratulations, Delaney!

Return of Carols on the Lawn
After a three-year hiatus, the school was thrilled to celebrate our annual ‘Carols on the Lawn’ event, here within the spacious, green primary school grounds.
The students had a fantastic evening singing, dancing and enjoying the festivities. Families spread out on the grass in the picture perfect weather, and took in the wide range of entertaining performances from our enthusiastic students.
Thank you to all our dedicated volunteers who were very busy from start to finish selling raffle tickets, cooking sausages and making the in-demand snow cones.
It truly is the most wonderful time of the year!

PRIMARY
The Primary swimming carnival was not graced with the perfect weather that we wished for. However, it was inspiring to see the students tough it out in the 38 degree conditions. It was also great to see parents back at the pool supporting the event.
Our students participated with such enthusiasm and passion. A special mention to our Year 10 PASS students who were excellent throughout the day, assisting staff with place judging and running marshalling sheets up and down the pool.
It was also a day for breaking records. Lachlan Nagle smashed three records including 50m freestyle, backstroke and butterfly, while Jack Hawkins set a record in the 50m breaststroke.
Riverine Associated Schools (RAS) Swimming Carnival Students had a long but fruitful day at the RAS swimming carnival in Wagga Wagga on 8 March. Students were cheered on by parents, grandparents and even alumni Lucy Nelson who currently studies in Wagga.
Congratulations to the following students on some great results:
• Jack Hawkins 2nd in breaststroke
• Lachlan Nagle 3rd in freestyle and butterfly
• Jack Hawkins, Lachlan Nagle, Sam McCleary and Tommy Teasdale-Dohnt 3rd in the boys relay.
Our four Year 6 boys, Sam McCleary, Jack Hawkins, Lachlan Nagle and Tommy Teasdale-Dohnt traveled to Sydney to compete in the Primary CIS Championships in late March.
The boys swam in the 4x50m freestyle relay, achieving a PB (2.24).
Lachlan Nagle also swam PB’s in the 50m freestyle, backstroke and wiped a massive 5 seconds off his 50m butterfly PB! Jack Hawkins swam a PB in the 50m breaststroke and Tommy Teasdale-Dohnt, to round off a great day, also swam a PB in his 50m backstroke event. We are all so proud of the boys’ efforts! Well done!

SECONDARY
We were blessed with the perfect day to hold the Secondary Swimming Carnival this year. With the year 12s celebrating their final carnival, they did not disappoint with some spectacular dress-ups and a great entrance to get proceedings started.
Many have earmarked it ‘The race of the day’ - where the best swimmers from each age group battle it out against the staff. It may come as no surprise that the staff were able to take out this race comfortably. The team of Mr Townrow, Mr Scoble, Mr Hall and Mr McMahon eased their way to victory, followed by the Year 12 team.
Congratulations to this year’s age champions:

Border Independent Schools Sports Association (BISSA) Swimming Carnival
After an overnight stay in Wagga Wagga, the 2023 BISSA carnival got off to a great start with perfect weather and blue skies. All participating students represented themselves and the school extremely well.

Commencement Assembly: New Beginnings
In February we celebrated the commencement of a wonderful 2023 school year!
As part of our Acknowledgement of Country, local indigenous musician Madi Colville-Walker shared a moving performancethank you to the very talented Madi!
A highlight of our assembly was Mr Scott Downward’s first address as Principal, outlining his commitment to building relationships with the School community. Our new Primary Leadership team and Beacon Leaders were inducted into their new leadership roles. The Year 12 cohort and new Kindergarten students were welcomed - the Kindergarten students were presented with a gift from the Year 12 students, a tree for them to plant and watch grow, just as they do. In return the Kinders presented the Year 12s with their HSC ties. This has become a special, symbolic part of our Commencement Assembly.
We celebrated the dedication of Mrs Kim Lannen, a long-standing member of our Parents and Friends team who has contributed so much to the school.
We also celebrated the successes of our 2022 HSC cohort; we welcomed back some of our students and heard an inspiring speech from School Dux Harper Raverty.
Thank you to the many parents and special guests who joined and supported our students on this auspicious start to the school year.

2022 Presentation Day
We also had the opportunity to formally welcome our senior leaders into their new leadership roles – they have stepped up to these roles with enthusiasm and we know they will be such great assets to the school over 2023.
Along with the opportunity to congratulate students on their outstanding results and achievements we also presented long standing staff with their service awards.
We very much appreciate the generosity of the local business and families who sponsored the student awards for our Presentation Assemblies. Our school is very grateful for the support each year and we encourage all students and families to reach out to and support these businesses.
In December we proudly conducted our Primary and Secondary Presentation Assemblies, allowing us to look back on the school year and celebrate our student achievements.
We provided a live feed of the assemblies, ensuring those family members unable to attend didn’t miss out. Our primary and secondary student leaders confidently took leading roles in MCing and assisting the assemblies.
Throughout both of the assemblies, we saw so many students who have embodied the School’s core values of Compassion, Respect and Integrity. Congratulations to all of those students who received awards.
We were wowed with a number of outstanding musical performances throughout the day and were especially grateful to hear the Jazz ensemble play, what a performance!
A special thank you to the generous sponsors of our Year Level Dux Awards.

Class of ‘22 APRIL EELES
April joined the illustrious 90+ ATAR club, also attaining a Band 6 result in PHDPE and joining the Distinguished Achievers list.
April says one of the major factors leading to her fantastic result was ‘my strong relationships with my teachers - they were very supportive and always push you to be your best’.
April’s advice to this year’s HSC students is to ‘listen in class, revise early and don’t leave things til the last minute!’.
Class of ‘22 DYLAN SCOBLE
Class of 2022 graduate and former school captain Dylan Scoble is doing something a little out of the ordinary this year. He has joined the team at MAG to undertake a year long Sports Ready Traineeship, where he’ll learn firsthand what teaching and mentoring students is all about.
Dylan is passionate about all things sporting, and hopes to go on to complete a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science at Deakin University in Geelong in 2024.
Dylan believes the ongoing support from the teaching staff as well as belonging to a small and supportive cohort allowed him to navigate the many obstacles of the last few years and to achieve solid educational outcomes.
His advice to our current senior students is to “enjoy and make the most of that last year of school – it all comes to an end very quickly”.
Class of ‘22 HAMISH SMITH
Hamish is another new entrant into the 90+ ATAR club and is thrilled to have commenced a double degree in agriculture and business at the University of new England in Armidale; he will attain an accounting degree on completion.
Hamish’s hard work has paid off - he was awarded a scholarship from the Gardiner Dairy Foundation that will assist him greatly with fees for the first three years of his degree! It has been quite a transition to university life after growing up on a farm near Undera, but is one that Hamish is relishing.
Hamish advises our senior students that ‘internal marks are important, each assessment counts - so don’t leave it all to exam time ... it could be too late’.
14 | MOAMA ANGLICAN GRAMMAR
Class of ‘22 JAMES MYERS
James secured early entry to Swinburne University in Hawthorn and is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Engineering.
James is grateful for the opportunities that have opened up to him upon moving from Kyabram to Melbourne, and reminds our senior students to ‘work hard, but always keep aside time for yourself’.
James other passion is music and he has been a mainstay of the music scene at Moama Anglican Grammar, playing piano in ensembles, bands and solo performances. It will certainly be difficult to find another musician of his calibre to fill his shoes!
Class of ‘22 NIAH BACON
Niah has wanted to join the Australian Defence Force since attending an information session at school in Year 10... and in 2023, her dream is coming true!
Niah is currently based in Kapooka, outside of Wagga Wagga, completing an ADF Gap Year as an Army Support Officer. This means she will end up gaining valuable experience as either a driver, warehouse coordinator or in administration.
Niah’s not sure where her gap year will lead her, but hopes to pursue a role in the ADF that involves plenty of travel.
Niah’s advide to our senior students is to ‘not let your marks define you... there are many different ways to get to where you want to be’.
Class of ‘22 TAJ ELLIOTT
Taj got a headstart on his career, commencing a traineeship with Peat Partners in Echuca last November after finishing up his HSC. Taj plans to study commerce this year in conjuction with his traineeship. He feels he’ll have the best of both worlds - learning key skills on the job, and studying online toward a degree at the same time.
For Taj, working with numbers and equations makes sense - the idea of there being a place for everything brings him a sense of accomplishment. And he is looking forward to applying what he has learned at work to his university studies.
Taj offers the following advice to our senior students, ‘take time to reflect and appreciate everything in the moment...it will all change before you know it.’

First in Course - VET Tourism, Travel and Events
Congratulations to Year 11 student Brodie Jardine, who placed First in Course for VET Tourism, Travel and Events of all students in the course throughout NSW! Brodie thinks living in a regional area worked to her advantage: "Because we're such a small class I got a lot of one-on-one attention which helped me in achieving the mark I received," she said.
Text from Hayley
Brodie's achievement is all the more impressive coming on the heels of the major flooding in the Echuca-Moama area The natural disaster proved a major disruption for all students in the area completing HSC examinations "It was very stressful worrying about your friends and family who have been affected "
Brodie travelled to Sydney to receive her award at the NSW HSC First in Course event The whole Moama Anglican Grammar community is exceptionally proud
Because we're a small class I got a lot of one-on-one attention which really helped me in achieving the mark I received
Moama Anglican Grammar's 2022 HSC students have excelled despite the many challenges thrown at them. The cohort of 50 students and their dedicated teachers have worked through the pandemic, completing a full year of class time, only to have their HSC examinations interrupted by far-reaching floods For many of our students, these floods meant that they were not provided the opportunity to sit their subject exams To have this final milestone taken away from our students is not only heartbreaking for them, but also for their teachers who spent countless hours preparing them for this final right of passage The school, led by Principal Carmel Spry, worked closely with the NESA Misadventure team to ensure the floods did not dampen the students’ opportunities to be successful in their HSC and final results The strong and supportive academic focus for each student is evident in the results attained by our cohort this year
The students results reflect their outstanding efforts, with 11 Band 6 (90-100) results and 9 students from the school being recognised on the Distinguished Achievers list for attaining the highest possible band for one or more subjects This year, English Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 1 have proven to be an excellent option for students to undertake as part of their pattern of study, with 1 E4 recipient and 9 students attaining an E3 result in their course The students also collectively received 71 Band 5 (80-89) results across their subjects, which is an excellent outcome
The DUX of the School is awarded based on a student’s ATAR result, and it is with enormous pleasure that the School announces Harper Raverty as DUX of 2022 with an ATAR of 95 30 Harper has attained State recognition on the Distinguished Achievers List Her efforts during such a difficult time are truly commendable
Brodie Jardine, of the Year 11 cohort, was honoured on Wednesday 14 December in the First in Course ceremony in Sydney This award and state recognition is given to the student attaining overall 1st in HSC VET Tourism, Travel and Events This is a truly praiseworthy achievement Brodie has also been recognised as a Top Achiever in NSW
The School's 2022 ATAR results have continued to impress, with 10 students attaining an ATAR over 80 from a cohort of 50 students Of these 10 students, 4 (8%) attained an ATAR over 90, and 7 (14%) over 85
All students in this close cohort should be celebrated for their efforts, in what has been a very unpredictable and disrupted HSC The School congratulates every student on their own personal success and wish them well in their future

Nurturing our Musical Talent
Our students are making the most of the two music pods installed beside the secondary music room last year.
The pods are set up to be highly functional as music rehearsal spaces and also as a recording studio, with instruments, sound and recording equipment, and effective sound-proofing for a professional experience.
Our pods are currently utilised by our elective curriculum music classes (Year 9/10) and extra-curricular music groups including Primary and Secondary Rock Bands.
The pods will also be extremely beneficial for future HSC Music students, allowing students to have ‘break-out’ spaces during music class time to rehearse on their instrument in preparation for assessments and performances.

Learning beyond the classroom
Our Year 9 and 10 students have now completed two 5-week blocks of Student Interest Modules (SIMs). Students have had a wonderful time gaining insight into various activities of their choice and learning beyond the classroom.
Students have been very engaged in the various activities on offer. The volunteering activities have been a great opportunity for students to give back to their community and this has been a highlight so far of the SIMs. Students are also having the opportunity to mix across year levels and create some great friendships.
Whilst Textiles and AFL Strategy modules have received great feedback from students, ‘How to be a Barista’ has proved to be the most popular module in the current block. Mr Luke Teasdale from Three Black Sheep has generously donated his time to lead this very practical module. Furthering the community partnership element, Alumni parent Byron Hall from AWM donated electrical supplies, alumni students Nick Denahy (Rowan Hill Electrical) and James Carr (Scope Electrical Solutions) donated their time to complete the electrical work required to install the coffee machine and current parents Mr Luke Teasedale and Mrs Anna Carlsson have provided the coffee machine and equipment. This module has turned out to be a true exchange of our school community time and resources!
We are excited to see where this program takes students. With a list of over 70 modules to choose from, it’s the perfect opportunity for students to get out into the community, learn new skills and make new connections with peers and teachers.

Where are they now?
LACHIE SCHULTZ
Lachie Schultz began his educational journey at Moama Anglican Grammar in 2009 as a Year 6 student. Building upon the very positive work experience he completed during Year 10, Lachie decided to leave school at the end of that year and take up a plumbing apprenticeship. He finished the apprenticeship attaining a Cert III in plumbing. Lachie wanted to expand upon the foundational skills he’d learned, and returned to TAFE to do a Cert IV unit, giving him the skills to be able to run and manage a plumbing business.
Throughout his apprenticeship, Lachie never lost his passion for AFL football, playing for the Bendigo Pioneers and then Williamstown. At the end of his apprenticeship, Lachie was fortunate enough to be drafted to the Fremantle Dockers, where he still plays today. ‘Being drafted is a major life highlight for me, and then this year I was lucky enough to play in my first finals campaign.’
Lachie had a strong circle of friends at MAG, that he still calls his best friends today. He also met his partner, Maddie Oberin, at MAG where they first started dating. Lachie’s favourite teacher at MAG was Mr Cadd, ‘Mr Cadd always encouraged me to chase my dreams of playing AFL and helped me with football pathway opportunities immensely’.
Lachie’s advice to our current students is to ‘explore as many options as possible and to connect with the many advisors you have while at school who can offer vital experience and advice that can help point you in the right direction’.
NICOLAS FARR-JONES CLASS OF 2019
Nicholas graduated from MAG in 2019. After an arduous application process throughout 2019, Nicholas was accepted into the Australian Defence Force Army Gap Year program in early 2020, which gives young Australians the chance to experience an exciting and rewarding 12-month role in the army.
After spending 12 months undertaking training in Kapooka (Wagga Wagga), Singleton and finally Townsville, Nicholas decided to stay on in the army and is now based in Townsville. Initially with the rifle company, he undertook a Signallers course and is now in Support Company, Sig Platoon.
Visits to Echuca-Moama will be regular for Nicholas, whose parents both live in the area. He remembers his time well at Moama Anglican Grammar and keeps in touch with his network of MAG friends. Nicholas vividly recalls the efforts the teaching staff put in to his senior schooling, and realises now that the values and skills that the teachers conveyed to students at the time really do transfer to the real world and are important ideals for living a productive and happy life.
