MUCH MORE THAN BOOKS

CLUBS, CLASSES, COMMUNITY, AND A CAT NAMED COSMO AT GRAND COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY

hen Grand County Public Library’s Moab branch was awarded “Best Small Library in America” in 2007, it was due in part to the library’s new energy-efficient “green” building. Two years later the Moab Library was named a “Utah Outstanding Library.”

A HISTORY OF INNOVATION

Former Library Director Eve Tallman added more than 50 new computers at a time when many residents did not own one, according to Library Journal, which along with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation sponsored the national “Best Small Library” award, which was created in 2005 to “encourage and showcase the exemplary work of libraries serving populations under 25,000.” The library opened in 2006.

The library shares a geothermal HVAC system with the renovated city hall next door, has low-emittance glass windows, 18-inch thick walls, and large roof overhangs to help keep the library cool during the heat of the summer. The carpets contain recycled fibers, and recycled brick is used in the walls. Native landscaping surrounds the building. Library usage has only grown since receiving the national award, says current Library Director Carrie Valdes. Additionally,

a beloved cat named Cosmo has taken up residence; and, a Teen Center branch has been added – along with many other library amenities.

With an address and photo ID, Grand County residents, as well as San Juan County residents with an 84532-zip code, can acquire a library card which allows free access to books, magazines, movie CDs, and mobile devices.

Valdes is proud of the library’s mobile device lending offerings, which include Chromebooks, E-readers, Kindles, and mobile WIFI hotspots – a device the size of a cellphone that allows unlimited and fast Internet access, and comes with a charger.

Currently the library has roughly 55 hotspots, and 24 circulating Chromebooks – with plans to add more to meet increasing requests for these popular tools, and as other equipment and technologies become obsolete, Valdes says.

“We started with a small number of devices in 2018, and then during the pandemic, the need (for more) skyrocketed, so we got a grant to add more devices,” Valdes says.

Internet access is expensive in Moab, says Library Assistant Director Meghan Flynn. Thus, the library prioritizes making the Internet available for residents so they can access important health information, legal materials, school notices, and more. “Internet access is critical for functioning in our society, and while the library offers access, it is not open 24/7,” Flynn says. The mobile hotspots allow

people Internet access at home, and when it’s convenient for them.

Need help with your smartphone? Or other digital electronic devices? If so, the library is there for you. Staff members offer one-onone tech assistance at the library for free, says Valdes.

Additionally, in partnership with the Grand Center, a gathering place for seniors, Library Assistant Rae Vinson schedules appointments at the Center for one-on-one tech support.

The library also partners with the Moab Valley Multicultural Center to offer bilingual, English-Spanish story times. “We’re always looking for opportunities to partner with other organizations,” Flynn says. “A lot of programs at the library are made richer by the partnerships that we have.”

“Our focus is that programs be free and open to the public,” Valdes says.

The library also collaborates with the Moab Arts and Recreation Center (MARC) where Jessie Magleby, Head of Adult Services, helps organize “The Storied Self” – Moab story “slam” events where community members are invited to come and tell stories based on a theme.

The library is partnering again this year with the Moab Music Festival to offer a Musical Story Hour, a six-part, pre-K music class where children learn “musical building blocks,” like rhythm, pitch, tempo and more, through stories, songs, games, crafts, and hands-on music learning. These free classes will be offered once a month on a Saturday for three months in the spring and three months in the fall.

For adults, the library provides film screenings, art classes and lectures on history or scientific topics – events that change monthly.

Looking for a book club to join? Both the Moab Library and the Castle Valley Branch Library host book clubs that meet monthly at their libraries. Castle Valley Library Assistant Chelsea Jensen coordinates the books and discussions at that branch, while book club members in Moab come up with their own reading list – with the library providing the venue and books to lend.

The library orders multiple copies of the book clubs’ choices via the Utah State Library’s Books Buzz lending program, and then ships the books back after the club is finished reading them. You can check the library web site to view the current or next month’s titles. Both book clubs are open to the public.

If you can’t find a particular title on the shelf that you want, you can always request it from another library via interlibrary loan. “We’re a community service-oriented organization; we’re open to suggestions,” Flynn says. “Let us know.

If there’s a particular book you want, we can get it. We invite the public to talk to us and let us know what you’re interested in.”

Children learn to love reading and libraries by attending storytimes. There’s also a board game club that meets weekly, plus, a very popular Lego Club that meets weekly, as well. “We have boxes and boxes of donated Legos,” Valdes says. “We throw a big tarp on the floor and dump them out. Kids (ages 8-12) have a blast.”

LIBRARY TEEN CENTER

In June 2023, the new Library Teen Center opened at 150 W. 200 South, on the same campus where the Moab Free Health Clinic and Student Career and Success Center are

located. Students who attend the alternative high school often hang out after school at the Teen Center.

There’s a ping-pong table, 10 computers, two gaming consoles, virtual reality headsets, and a cart full of STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities. Plus, there’s a 3-D printer that allows teens to experiment with robotics, and design and create various threedimensional objects such as keychains, board game pieces, and whistles.

Teens enjoy playing computer games with their peers sitting next to them in the same room where they interact and laugh together while they play, says Teen Services Library Assistant Christina Williams.

“All programming is drop-in; kids can help themselves,” she says. “It’s a hangout for after school.”

The Teen Center offers free snacks, and hygiene products such as shampoo and hairbrushes, as well as school supplies. Williams also gives out vouchers for WabiSabi Thrift Store for those who need a jacket or other clothing. The Teen Center is open Monday through Thursday, 3-8 p.m., and Friday, 2-8 p.m. Hours change during the summer months.

“It’s a safe space for teens to be themselves, and interact with one another,” Flynn says.

BOOK SALE

When entering the library, it’s easy to get sidetracked inside the lobby where the Grand County Public Library Friends group hosts an ongoing sale of donated books and CDs.

Most books are $1, or 50 cents for small paperbacks. Though special books, like vintage titles typically cost more. “We research them when we think something might be worth a lot,” said Cynthia Smith, a member of the nonprofit Friends group since 2010. “We have found books worth hundreds of dollars. Two weeks ago, we sold a signed copy of a book by Edmund Hillary about the first ascent of Mount Everest for $275.”

“We always sell for less than what you might pay online. There are a lot of bargains,” Smith says. All proceeds from sale of the books go to help fund the library.

COSMO THE CAT

In the fall of 2018, as evening temperatures began to drop, library staff noticed that a black and white tuxedo cat hanging around outside the library would often slip inside when someone opened the door. The cat would sneak into the children’s room –which delighted the children who picked him up and carried him around.

After about a week one of the children’s librarians began knocking on doors in the neighborhood to try and find out who owned the cat, she recalled. When library staff learned its family had moved away and left the cat behind, they quickly decided to allow him to take up residence in the library – since it had not caused any problems, and no one had complained. A young patron named him “Cosmo.”

While you might notice Cosmo napping at any number of spots throughout the library, his favorite spot is on his comfy bed next to the circulation desk – where many patrons stop to pet him. Treats and cat food have been donated by both employees and patrons.

To keep tabs on all that’s going on in the library you can sign up for the library newsletter, which comes out the first of each month. Or, visit the web site: moablibrary. org to check the calendar to see what’s happening daily. The Moab Library is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Castle Valley branch is open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. n

Moab’s magician

RICK BORETTI’S WEEKLY SHOW CAPTIVATES THE IMAGINATIONS OF ALL AGES

When Brian Quigley and his family first moved to Moab from rural New Mexico over 20 years ago, a friend introduced him to a Moab local named Rick Boretti, a performing magician. As a welcome to town, Boretti performed a magic show for Quigley’s kids, then around 8 and 10 years old, who still remember the show to this day.

34 MOAB AREA REAL ESTATE MAGAZINE May–June 2024
“The show is amazing — full of puzzles, delight and humor.”

“He’s really interactive with kids, which is really great,” Quigley says.

In another of Boretti’s shows, a Halloween-themed act at the library, Quigley’s son assisted in a trick that, as Quigley recollects, involved some kind of “surgery.” When asked, Boretti says the trick he was likely performing was “psychic surgery,” in which the magician removes a “growth”—actually, in Boretti’s shows, he used chicken livers—from a person’s body. The trick made an impression.

“My son still talks about it,” Quigley says.

Boretti has been performing magic in Moab for decades. During the warm months, he performs every Saturday night at the Backyard Theater. The venue is casual and tickets are only ten dollars. Longtime locals agree that the show is amazing—full of puzzles, delight and humor. Boretti’s sly jokes and seamless sleightof-hand are entertaining for all ages.

“Years ago, before I saw his show, he and I went to Las Vegas to see the professionals there,” says Moab local Bill Foreman, who lives near Boretti and has seen him perform many times. “We went to several magic shows. They’re the best in the world—and he’s as good as they are.”

At the Backyard Theater

On a breezy April Saturday evening that threatened rain, around 25 people took their seats at Moab’s Backyard Theater to see the magic show. A table of props—wine glasses, a basket, cards—sat in front of a mural of Moab’s red rocks on the small stage sheltered by a cottonwood tree. The Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour” played on a speaker while people waited for the show to start.

Boretti stepped on stage and introduced himself. There were only two kids in the crowd, and he engaged them right away with a balloon-animal trick. He followed that with

a series of impossible rope tricks using silly magic words; then he invited one of the kids up to help with a card trick.

The boy was shy, so Boretti coaxed him up by inviting his family members to join. He asked the names and ages of the two boys, and asked if they were brothers. They confirmed they were—Boretti asked, “Have you always been brothers?” eliciting a blank stare from the kids but a chuckle from the audience. The boys and their mom helped Boretti magically multiply balls and cause a marked playing card to travel mysteriously through the deck.

Boretti loves performing for kids, who he says are more difficult to fool than adults because they don’t have such ingrained habits of thinking and perceiving.

“Your brain cancels things out because it’s seen it thousands and thousands of times,” Boretti explains. “Kids don’t have those images.”

Becoming a magician

Boretti first came to Moab in the 1980s. He worked as a river guide and traveled between Texas and Moab for over a decade. He and his wife settled in Moab in the 1990s, and he still works on the river as a ranger and as a wildlife biologist.

When their son was born, Boretti rekindled a childhood hobby. His brother, on a visit to Moab, brought some old magic instruction books from the home they’d grown up in, and Boretti dove back into learning sleight-of-hand and other magic performance skills.

“I had a lot of time, with the baby napping,” he says.

He got good, and started working as the house magician at Eddie McStiff’s, a longtime Moab restaurant. He entertained diners as they waited for their orders, sometimes enthralling them so thoroughly they forgot about dinner.

“I’ve had people go, ‘darn, our food’s here!’” he says. Over the years he also worked at other

“Close-up magic is real neat,” he says. “When it’s in their hands it’s more magical—when it’s up close and personal.”

Sometimes he recognized diners who returned to Moab regularly, and once experienced a magical coincidence with a familiar group.

He’d found an old card deck that had fallen into a crevice somewhere in the restaurant, and he cycled it into his act. He was performing for a family he knew from their repeated trips to Moab, and he asked one of the teenaged children to pick a card from a bunch, preparing to do a trick. But something happened that amazed everyone—the card she drew already had her signature on it, which Boretti realized she must have written as part of one of his tricks the year before. He hadn’t planned it, but he went with it, pivoting to act as though that was the trick he’d meant to do all along.

Childlike wonder

At the Saturday show at the Backyard Theater, Boretti didn’t stop at having the kids assist with tricks. He pulled audience members to help with various routines involving cards, balls, and mind-reading. One couple in the audience gamely mimed shuffling and selecting cards from an imaginary deck. In a classic magician’s move, Boretti borrowed a $20 bill from an audience member and subjected it to apparently destructive acts. Some people left with souvenirs, like cards on which they’d written their names. One participant who looked to be in his twenties delighted Boretti with his expressive reactions to the magic—he covered his mouth with his hands and his eyes got wide, and then he dropped his hands to reveal a huge grin.

Boretti says he loves to see adults indulge in childish delight at his magic shows.

“Adults will say, ‘I feel like a kid again,’” Boretti says. “Adults have forgotten how to play, and they haven’t had that sense of wonder since they were a kid.” Sometimes people approach him after his show with tears in their eyes, or want to give him a hug.

“It is totally Moab,” says Carey Dabney, a Moab local who has seen Boretti’s show about half a dozen times over the past few years. “Funky and fun. Like going back to the Middle Ages to watch a street performance.”

“I recommend it as often as I can,” Foreman says.

Keeping it fresh

Boretti changes the show depending on who he sees in the audience—whether there are a lot of kids or mostly adults, and whether he sees new or familiar faces.

“Every show is different,” he says. “Magic takes place in the minds of the audience.”

He keeps learning new tricks, and evolving old standbys.

“I’m always working on new stuff,” he says. “I have some things I haven’t done yet but I’ve been working on them for four or five years.”

Even people who have seen Boretti’s show several times, and have seen versions

of some of the same tricks, are stumped on how he pulls them off. Both Quigley and Dabney are struck by a signature trick involving a lemon—no spoilers here.

“That’s the one I’m like, ‘Whaaat?’” Quigley says. “That’s a great trick.” Dabney calls it “perhaps the most puzzling” of Boretti’s tricks. She also loves one in which a card “mysteriously rises on its own from a pack of cards held by a blindfolded audience member who had randomly selected the card earlier.”

“Oh, and the one with the fork,” she adds, without elaborating. You’ll have to see the show to find out how that one goes. n
