HOW TO INVOLVE FAMILY TRADITIONS

in a modern wedding

In an era of Pinterest boards and Instagram-worthy celebrations, many Minnesota couples are balancing trendy aesthetics with the meaningful traditions that shaped them The good news? You don’t have to choose

The most memorable weddings often weave together contemporary style with cherished family customs to create a celebration that feels both fresh and deeply personal

Today's couples are finding creative ways to incorporate family traditions while still designing a wedding that reflects their unique relationship Whether your families have strong cultural ties or simply treasured customs that have been passed down through generations, these elements can add profound meaning to your celebration

TechnologyasaBridgeBetweenGenerations

One of the most beautiful aspects of modern weddings is how technology allows us to include loved ones who can't physically attend This was something I experienced firsthand during my own wedding in 2021

My great-grandmother 97 at the time couldn’t travel to our ceremony but we were determined to include her As family played a central role in our celebration my uncle officiated and we asked members from both families to read scripture and bless our marriage her absence felt significant

Our solution? My great-grandmother recorded her scripture reading, which we played over speakers during our outdoor ceremony That moment became one of the most touching parts of our day, bringing tears to many eyes as her familiar voice blessed our marriage from afar It was so special and meaningful to have her included in such a personal way bridging generations through technology while honoring the tradition of family participation

CeremonialTouches: Many Minnesota couples find meaningful to incorporate family heirlooms directly into their ceremony particularly touching tradition involves wrapping bouquet stems lace from a mothers or grandmothers wedding dress, pe secured with a family brooch or pin This thoughtful detail no creates a beautiful visual element but also ensures that a pie family history accompanies the bride down the aisle The wra lace becomes both a tangible connection to past generations perfect "something old" that honors family legacy in a subt significant way

Fashion and Accessories: Family jewelry often becomes centerpiece of wedding day accessories, with many Minn brides choosing to wear heirloom pieces that have graced weddings for generations Beyond simply wearing these treasu their traditional form some couples work with local jewele temporarily reset stones or pearls into more contemporary de that complement modern wedding attire This approach honor history of the piece while allowing it to harmonize with the co personal style After the celebration, these precious items ca returned to their original settings, preserving the heirloom for generations while adding another chapter to its story

Reception Celebrations: Family recipes provide a heartfelt way to incorporate heritage into wedding celebrations Many couples choose to serve traditional family dishes during their reception, whether as part of the main meal or as special additions to the dessert table Including the original handwritten recipe cards as part of the display adds another layer of meaning, giving guests insight into the family's history and traditions Some couples even take this a step further by providing recipe cards as wedding favors sharing their family legacy and inviting friends to continue these culinary traditions in their own homes

Honoring Loved Ones Who Have Passed: When important family members cannot be present for a wedding celebration, incorporating their favorite flowers throughout the event offers a beautiful tribute that balances remembrance with joy Rather than creating separate memorial elements that might feel solemn, weaving these meaningful blooms into bouquets, centerpieces, and ceremony décor creates subtle touchpoints of connection throughout the day This approach allows couples to feel their loved one ' s presence in organic unexpected moments during the celebration

TheHeartofTradition

At its core, tradition is about connection to our past, to our families, and to the values that shape us The most successful incorporation

of family traditions happens when couples focus on the meaning behind the customs rather than simply going through the motions When planning your wedding, have conversations with family members about which traditions matter most to them and why Understanding the sentiment behind family customs can help you find meaningful ways to honor them, even if you adapt the format to fit your celebration

Your wedding day is a beautiful opportunity to honor where you ' ve come from while celebrating where you ' re going together By thoughtfully weaving family traditions into your modern celebration, you create a day that resonates not just with beautiful styling, but with authentic meaning and heartfelt connection that will be remembered for generations to come

HAVEN & RILEY

On a cool late September day, Haven and Riley celebrated their love at Popple Creek Wedding and Events, surrounded by nature and cherished ones. The venue was chosen for its rustic charm and freedom to personalize every detail, from the engaging DJ who kept the dance floor alive to the photographer who captured every candid moment with grace

Their day started relaxed, with the bridal party prepping at Haven's parents' home before heading to the venue Riley waited on the venue's island for a first look that set the tone for a day full of smiles and laughter Their cherished golden retriever, Sunny, walked down the aisle ahead of Haven, bringing a touch of whimsy to their ceremony

Reflecting their shared passion for ice fishing, their wedding favors were custom can koozies, a nod to their many winter weekends spent on frozen lakes The floral arrangements

were simple yet elegant, with faux wildflowers adding splashes of color

One of Haven's secrets to a stress-free day was her meticulous planning She prepared detailed binders for everyone involved, ensuring that the day unfolded without a hitch Their night ended under a sky painted with sunset hues, dancing to the memorable beats of 'September' by Earth, Wind, and Fire

Haven's planning advice? She advises couples to be true to themselves and make decisions that reflect their personalities, rather than conforming to expectations This approach not only makes the planning process more enjoyable but also ensures that the wedding day feels personal and unique "Make your wedding authentically yours, focus on what truly matters, and let the day be a reflection of your love and joy," she says, encouraging future couples to prioritize their happiness and to plan with confidence and joy

NICK & KAITLYN

Nick and Kaitlyn’s wedding day was a celebration of deep love, unwavering loyalty, and simple, timeless beauty Inspired by their private nature and desire to honor the closest people in their lives, they chose an intimate ceremony at the breathtaking Noerenberg Gardens in Wayzata, Minnesota, followed by a relaxed gathering at home with extended friends and family the next day With clear skies, no wind, and a perfect 79 degrees, the weather felt like a gift

Their story began as teenagers working at a retail shoe store, where Nick instantly knew Kaitlyn was someone special One memorable early moment was when Nick, sensing the importance of his feelings, texted “I love you ” right before Kaitlyn boarded a flight overseas - a confession that sparked a love story lasting over a decade Their journey, full of resilience and unwavering devotion, led to a heartfelt proposal on a Duluth trail, surrounded by the natural beauty they both adore

Their wedding day reflected the same authenticity that defines their relationship They leaned into a simple, elegant style of black, white, and greenery, allowing the stunning garden venue to take center stage They wrote their own vows, bringing tears (and a shared tissue!) to the ceremony A particularly touching moment was Kaitlyn’s first look with her grandpa, followed by her grandparents walking her down the aisle - a memory she and her family will treasure forever

True to their nature, Nick and Kaitlyn skipped a traditional first look, instead savoring that powerful moment of seeing each other at the ceremony Their day was filled with peace, gratitude, and an overwhelming sense of love, both for each other and from the circle of people who have supported them from the very beginning Their advice to other couples? Stay true to yourselves, trust your hearts, & build a day that feels like you

ANDREW & ALEXIS

Andrew and Alexis chose the scenic Black Sand Beach in Silver Bay, MN, for their wedding, wanting nothing more than a day that felt true to their story and filled with personal meaning Their wedding was a celebration not just of their love but also of the natural world they cherish so deeply

Their connection started unexpectedly in 2020 at a Buffalo Rodeo and grew into a deep bond fortified by shared adventures, including a memorable engagement on a remote hiking trail in Colorado On their wedding day, they kept things intimate, with no bridal party and a small gathering of family, emphasizing the serenity and beauty of their lakeside venue

Instead of the usual wedding traditions, they shared heartfelt vows privately at Palisade Head, making the moment even more personal and emotional Alexis and Andrew skipped the typical diamond ring for a Moss

Agate stone, symbolizing their adventures and connection to nature

The highlight for both was their first look, where they shared a quiet, tearful moment together before the ceremony They ended the evening with a low-key reception at their cabin their favorite song, dancing under the open sky, surrounded by the people who mean the most to them

Their biggest piece of advice for other couples is simple yet profound: make your wedding your own They stress the importance of focusing on what truly matters to you as a couple, ensuring your day reflects your love and lives together Andrew and Alexis's wedding wasn’t just a ceremony; it was a true celebration of their past, present, and future together, deeply intertwined with the natural landscapes they love

KAYLA & COLBY

Kayla and Colby celebrated their intimate wedding at The Emerald Cottage on February 7th, 2025, surrounded by their closest family and friends. With Colby’s upcoming deployment, they planned a cozy gathering to honor their commitment before a larger celebration planned for 2026 Their wedding décor featured elegant candles, personal handmade centerpieces, and a timeless bouquet of white florals with lush greenery One of the sweetest moments of the ceremony was when their mothers stepped in as ring bearers, handing over the rings to their child’s new spouse, a sentimental gesture symbolizing the joining of their families

Their love story began in their senior year of college Kayla, finishing nursing school at The College of St Benedict, spotted Colby at a local college bar and boldly introduced herself After convincing him to take a shot of whiskey and dance (even though he claimed he couldn’t two-step), the rest was history

Colby later proposed at sunset during an impromptu photo session at St John’s arboretum, surprising Kayla entirely They spent the weekend celebrating with a bonfire and football tailgate surrounded by friends

On their wedding day, special moments were abundant, from Kayla's emotional first look with her father to private moments Colby shared with his mom Their cousin officiated the heartfelt ceremony, and Colby's mom provided homemade desserts After dinner and first dances, they celebrated with a sparkler exit and bar hopping with their favorite people

Their day was a beautiful example of prioritizing meaningful moments over elaborate details Kayla and Colby's advice to couples is clear: the heart of a wedding is about two people joining their lives together, so cherish the moments, find quiet time together, and embrace what truly matters

SAMANTHA & WILL

Sam and Will’s wedding at Bold North Cellars was nothing short of magical, especially after a long stretch of rainy weather that had everyone crossing their fingers. But June 15th showed up with sunshine and blue skies The couple stayed at Lake Darling Resort with their wedding party and families for the weekend, which added to the joy and memories Sam and Will even kicked off their wedding morning with a spontaneous jump into the lake, something she’ll never forget Their vision was clear: a carefree, love-filled day And that’s exactly what they got

The couple had known of each other since high school but never crossed paths until years later when Will was roommates with Sam’s sister’s now-husband A month after asking for her number (and making his first move via LinkedIn), the two hit it off Will eventually proposed in a twinkle-lit riverside setting in Hudson, with both families waiting to celebrate at a restaurant afterward

Choosing Alexandria for their wedding day felt like coming full circle for Sam, who spent summers there growing up The couple loved the laid-back charm of Bold North Cellars, and their outdoor celebration had the intimate, backyard vibe they’d dreamed of, complete with yard games, cocktails on the deck, and relaxed rustic décor

They added personal touches throughout the day: a Polaroid guestbook that brought out everyone ’ s creativity, a sweet bouquet charm with a photo and veil snippet in honor of Sam’s late grandma, and colorful wildflowerinspired florals with lots of texture Their grand entrance to “T N T ” by AC/DC, with guests waving napkins in the air, was a favorite moment they’ll never forget

beermosas and Minnesota martinis, and signage showcasing their beloved dog, Zula Bryce's siblings also gifted them a personalized baseball bat engraved with their last name and wedding date, highlighting the family's passion for baseball and softball

The floral design was built around white roses and lush greenery, based on inspiration photos Hannah and Christopher shared with Marlene, who brought everything to life with ease and beauty

Looking back, the couple shared that taking intentional moments together - grabbing morning coffee and pastries, sharing a quiet drink after the ceremony, and staying close to one another throughout the receptionhelped them soak in the magic of the day Their advice: Don’t let it all fly by without taking a moment to pause, breathe, and enjoy it, just the two of you

SAMUEL & JAIDA

Samuel and Jaida’s wedding day at Erickson Farmstead in Isanti, Minnesota, was nothing short of a dream - a beautiful June afternoon full of emotion, faith, and a few perfectlytimed raindrops Their ceremony took place outside under a gazebo, surrounded by family, friends, and a deep sense of peace As the clouds parted after the ceremony, a soft rain began to fall - a quiet blessing Jaida had always believed was a sign of good luck During their first dance as husband and wife, Samuel whispered it back to her, and together they danced in the rain the rest of the night, soaking in every ounce of joy God had poured out on them

Their love story began at church, when Jaida first spotted Samuel leading worship at Plymouth Covenant Church Two years later, they officially met through the young adults group Their first date took place at Como Zoo - the same spot where Samuel would later return to propose From bike rides and

boat days to first kisses and first "I love yous," their relationship grew quickly and beautifully

Faith was at the center of their wedding design Live worship music filled the air during the ceremony, a reflection of their shared love of music and devotion A powerful, personal moment was Jaida presenting Samuel with a necktie she had prayed over since she was sixteen years old - a quiet promise years in the making

Their floral design brought a soft, romantic touch to the day, with a blend of pale blue, peachy pink, and lush greenery Every part of their celebration, from the holy ceremony to the rainy dance floor to the cozy, moody photos taken inside the farmhouse, felt meaningful and full of life Looking back, Jaida describes it simply: there’s nothing they would change, and they would relive it all over again in a heartbeat

ALEXA & RIDGE

Alexa and Ridge’s elopement at Gooseberry Falls State Park was everything a Minnesota summer wedding should be: peaceful, adventurous, and absolutely stunning. The day started with Ridge scouting out the perfect tucked-away forest trail for their first look, while Alexa slipped into her dress Even after spending the morning together, the moment they saw each other all dressed up was full of those “ we ’ re really doing this” butterflies

True to their love of spontaneity, they explored the park in their wedding attirehiking trails, visiting waterfalls, and taking in the beauty of the North Shore A light rain passed through just in time for their vows, followed by golden-hour sunshine One of the sweetest moments came later in the evening, when Alexa surprised Ridge with a private first dance by the lake, a quiet, unforgettable moment just for the two of them

From meeting in Louisiana to getting engaged in Hawaii to marrying in Minnesota, they’ve embraced every journey side-by-side Their decision to elope was rooted in their love for travel, nature, and doing things their own way They kept their ceremony simple and sacred, exchanging vows on the rocky shore and recording a small traditional ceremony to share later with loved ones

Instead of fresh blooms, they used faux florals repurposed from a friend’s wedding And when it came time to make it official, two kind strangers on the beach stepped in as witnesses, sealing the day with joy and a few unexpected cheers

Alexa and Ridge’s elopement was a perfect start to their next chapter, one filled with love, exploration, and choosing each other over and over again, wherever life leads

Glow Up Goals: How to Prep Your Skin for the Big Day

With Tracy, Advanced Practice Esthetician + Owner of TrueSkin Spa

EEvery bride dreams of glowing, photo-ready skin, but with so much advice out there (and let’s be real, TikTok chaos), it can be hard to know where to start We sat down with Tracy, owner of TrueSkin Spa and certified acne expert, to get the real scoop on how to prep your skin for “I do ”

Start Sooner Than You Think

“When it comes to wedding skincare, timing is everything,” Tracy says “Ideally, we love to start working with brides 6 to 12 months before the big day It gives us time to heal, correct, and truly transform the skin Plus, if we’re working with breakouts or pigmentation, those things just don’t vanish overnight ”

Her go-to plan: a customized regimen built around your skin type, plus 6–12 professional treatments spaced about a month apart

One Size Does Not Fit All

“There’s no magic product that works for everyone and that’s the point,” Tracy explains “Every single one of our treatments is customized Whether a bride wants that glowy, dewy look or needs serious acne therapy, we tailor everything to their goals ”

And it’s not just what happens in the spa that counts. “Getting on a simple, consistent routine that matches your skin type is just as important as the treatments themselves ”

What If You’re Overwhelmed?

First of all, breathe “You don’t have to figure it out alone,” Tracy says “Start with a complimentary consultation We’ll teach

you about your skin type, what to avoid, and what to use ”

And yes, she’s side-eying TikTok just a little. “Don’t believe everything you see on social media Some of it’s great, but some of it can really wreck your skin, especially if you’re acne-prone Keep it simple, and get advice from a professional ”

Her Signature Glow-Up

If you’ve got a wedding (or any big event), Tracy’s Beyond Botox treatment is a crowd favorite “It’s our go-to for firming, hydrating, and lifting, instant glow, no irritation,” she says The treatment includes dermaplaning, a lactic peel, peptide infusion, and LED red light therapy Brides often walk out glowing

Bonus tip from Tracy: “Add on a microcurrent treatment for an extra lift ”

Real Acne Support

For brides battling breakouts, Tracy brings serious receipts “We’re all certified acne specialists through Face Reality, one of the most trusted and proven acne programs out there,” she explains. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach, there are many different types of acne, and each one needs its own game plan ”

With the right treatment and homecare, many clients start to see real results within three months “Acne can’t be cured, but it can be controlled ”

Biggest Myths Brides Believe

If you think you can wait until a month before your wedding to get serious about skincare, think again “Corrective treatments take time,” Tracy warns “Sun damage, pigment, texture - it all builds up over years Wearing sunscreen consistently is one of the best things you can do to age gracefully Hats, sunglasses, shade they all help!”

Proof It Works

Tracy lights up when talking about her brides “Every bride who’s started with us has stayed with us,” she says “That says a lot Once they see the difference in their skin, they’re in ”

Only a Few Months Left?

Don’t panic! It’s not too late “Even with just a few months, we can make real progress You won’t get everything corrected, but we can absolutely boost hydration, smooth texture, and calm the skin so it photographs beautifully ”

Final Advice? Make It Yours

“No two skincare journeys look alike,” Tracy reminds us “That’s why we personalize every plan Whether you’re starting early or just jumping in now, we’ll meet you where you’re at Let’s get glowing!”

Spotlight Service: Beyond Botox Treatment

THE POETRY OF PETALS

The delicate process of turning wedding flowers into lasting keepsakes

After working in the floral industry for over eight years, one of the most common questions I hear is: What should I do with my flowers after the wedding?” It’s a sentiment that comes up oftencouples want their blooms to last just a little longer

The truth is, flowers are fleeting They exist for only a moment in time until they bloom again And that’s what makes them so meaningful

Whether it ’ s preserving a lilac bloom from your grandmother’s garden by pressing it into a book, or hanging a bridal bouquet upside down in hopes of saving it for years to come, the desire to hold onto flowers is always rooted in something deeper We want to keep these joyful, irreplaceable moments close

For me personally, a journal filled with pressed flowers from places I’ve traveled is one of my most treasured possessions each bloom holds a memory

In recent years, flower preservation has grown in popularity, and I’ve refined the art of pressing flowers into timeless works of art Using traditional methods, I press blooms naturally, an eco-conscious and sustainable approach that captures their beauty in its purest form

A traditional flower press is a simple yet powerful tool: two wooden boards secured with bolts, layered with absorbent paper and cardboard to draw moisture from the petals The steady pressure flattens the blooms while maintaining their shape and color

Not all flowers press the same way

Some need to be delicately deconstructed, while others are pressed whole A sunflower, for example, has more depth and requires more time than a delicate cosmo The entire

process, from flower to finished artwork, can take up to 14 weeks

Fresh flowers should be dropped off at my studio within two days of the event From the moment they arrive, the preservation process begins I check on them daily, changing the paper to prevent discoloration and ensure vibrant results Every flower is different some retain their vibrancy while others may fade into softer hues White blooms may press with a creamy tone, while purples tend to stay bold I dont use any preservatives or color enhancers just nature doing its work Over time, blooms may change, but that transformation is part of the beauty T H E M A G I C O F F L O W E R P R E S S I N G

THE ART BLOOM TRANSFORMATION

Once the flowers are fully pressed, the most rewarding part begins: reconstruction This stage is more than placing petals into a frame Each bloom is arranged with purpose and care, either to resemble the original bouquet or take on the form of a whimsical, wildflower-inspired piece Every layout is intentionally crafted to highlight the unique beauty of each flower

A TIMELESS KEEPSAKE

To protect each piece, I use UVprotectant float glass, which guards against fading and preserves vibrancy

Each custom frame is handmade by a local woodworker and sealed for life

The final piece is not just a pressed bouquet - it ’ s a reflection of the moment and the memories it holds

It’s a privilege to preserve these stories through flowers From start to finish , each piece is crafted with care and intention Watching fleeting blooms become timeless keepsakes never stops feeling magical And my hope is always the same: that when you look at your preserved piece, it brings you back to the joy of that unforgettable day

HowtoWriteHeartfelt WeddingVows

FORTHEBRIDEWHO WANTSHERWORDS TOMATTER

ARTICLEANDPHOTOSBY SAMANTHARULE,RULECREATIVECO

Here’s the thing writing your own wedding vows sounds like a great idea until you open yourlaptopandstareattheblinkingcursorfor thirtyminuteswonderingifyourpartnerwillcry happy tears or just cry from secondhand embarrassment But don’t worry! Whether you’re a poet at heart or someone who still writes their grocery list on their phone notes app, you absolutely can write vows that feel genuine,memorable,and100%you

Here’syourguideonhowtomakethathappen:

StartWiththeFeels,NotthePressure

Before you dive into writing, take the pressure off Your vows don’t have to sound like they belong in a movie They don’t need to rhyme They don’t even need to be super long The goal? Speak from your heart Start by thinking about the little things you love about your partner, your favorite memories together, and whatyouhopeforinthefuture

KeepaNotesApporJournalHandy

This sounds silly, but the best lines come when you’re not trying too hard. Maybe you’re driving, at work, or brushing your teeth, and suddenly theperfectthingyouwanttosaypopsintoyour head Write It Down Later, youcansiftthrough thesenotesandpulltogetherwhatmakessense

IncludeaMixofSentimentandPersonality

Donotbeafraidtobealittlefunny, alittleweird, or a little quirky Did your first date involve takeout and binge-watching old sitcoms? Mentionit Didyoufallinloveoverlong-distance FaceTimes in college? Bring it up. Did he propose during your weekly Target run? Absolutely talk about it These moments are whatmakeyourstoryyours

Structure Helps (But Doesn’t Have to Be Boring)

Here’salittlecheatsheetforvowstructure: Start with how you met or when you knew theyweretheone

Shareafewthingsyouloveaboutthem

Talk about what you’ve learned or how you’vegrowntogether Makeafewpromises(sweet, silly, orserious)

End with what you’re most excited for in the future

Don’tCompareYourVowstoTheirs

You’regoingtoheartheirvowsforthefirsttime on the day (unless you both sneak peeks, no judgment!) Don’t stress if yours are shorter or less poetic They’re your vows They only need tobemeaningfultoyoutwo

PracticeOutLoud

Reading your vows out loud will help you catch anything that sounds awkward or confusing

Say them in front of a mirror, your dog, your mom, or your maid of honor This will also help with nerves when the big moment comes

The"DoNotForgetThis"List

Keep it under 2-3 minutes

Write them down or have a printed copy (nerves = forgetfulness!)

Try not to wing it. You will forget what you wanted to say It’s okay to cry or laugh (or both!). Just speak your truth.

And Finally... There is no "right" way to write vows. The right way is your way. Whether you write something poetic or playful, simple or sentimental, your vows are a love letter to your partner - a reflection of who you are and who you’re choosing to be together

So grab a coffee (or a glass of wine), light a candle, put on your favorite playlist, and just start. You’ve got this.

POV: YOU HIRED A CONTENT CREATOR

The Trendy Way Couples Are Reliving Their Day in Real Time

Let’s be real - your wedding day flies by in a blur of hugs, happy tears, and dance floor confetti. And while your photographer and videographer will capture the big moments in all their edited, polished glory, more and more couples are hiring a wedding content creator to capture the candid, in-between magic that happens along the way.

With apps like TikTok and Instagram taking center stage in our everyday lives, couples want something that feels real, shareable, and fast That’s where content creators come in Think behind-thescenes footage, vertical iPhone videos, full ceremony recordings, Reels and TikToks, all delivered in under 24 hours (yes, seriously).

SAMANTHA RULE HANNA DEFOE
Written by in Collaboration with
"Couples aren’t just booking content creators for social media - they’re booking them to capture the feeling of the day, in real-time."

Minnesota-based creator, Hanna of Hanna Marie Events, described it best: they’re not there to direct the day, but to capture it as it naturally unfolds - raw, unfiltered, and full of feeling Their packages typically include 8 hours of coverage, pre-planning, a highlight video, ceremony and speech recordings, and 60–80 clips per hour of coverage Add-ons can include coverage of events like bridal showers or rehearsal dinners, plus extra Reels for your contenthungry heart.

Worried about clashing with your photo/video team? Don’t be. Most content creators connect with your other vendors ahead of time to make sure everyone ’ s on the same page. And bonus: they often share their content with vendors post-wedding, especially those killer BTS shots of your florist setting up or your DJ hyping up the crowd

Hanna Marie Events

From raw behind-thescenes to ready-to-post moments, Hanna captures the heart of your day as its happening so you can live it now and replay it forever hannamarieeventscom

It’s not just pointing an iPhone and pressing record, either These creators are pros They come armed with gimbals, lighting, power banks, and an eye for storytelling Late-night Dropbox uploads? You bet. Carefully crafted angles and aesthetic edits? Absolutely. Content creation is gaining serious traction here in the Midwest, and if the booking calendars are any indication, it’s not slowing down. So whether you want more social media moments, a creative perspective, or just love the idea of capturing all the in-between feels, this trend might just be the missing piece of your wedding vendor dream team.

WhenOff-the-Rack Won’tDo

In our last issue, we shared a glimpse into Tayler’s journey as a bride preparing for her wedding with a very special dress in the works This time, we’re back with the full story and the beautiful photos that captured it all

Tayler and Chris were married on a crisp, rainy October morning at Twisted Oaks in Sauk Centre As she got ready with her closest friends and family, she remembered the old saying about rain bringing good luck “I just knew it was going to be the best day,” she said

The morning was relaxed and meaningful. Her oldest sister, a stylist and salon owner, and a close friend from another salon handled hair for the bridal party, moms, and officiants Meanwhile, the groom and his crew finished up details at the ceremony and reception site, prepping for the celebration ahead

But one of the most anticipated moments was stepping into her wedding dress - a completely custom gown created by local designer Freydell Alfaro

Tayler and Freydell first met years ago during a job interview, where Freydell mentioned her background in creating wedding gowns. “One day, I’ll make a dress just for you,” she told Tayler At the time, it felt like a casual, kind statement But when Tayler got engaged in June of 2024, those words resurfaced - and this time, they stuck.

Budget was one of the couple’s first conversations postengagement “We wanted to make the day special, but we also wanted to be smart about it,” Tayler explained. She floated the idea of having a dress custom-made, but wasn’t sure if it would be realistic Her fiancé encouraged her to explore the options

She tried on dresses at a few local shops, hoping to find something that felt right. “Even when I found one that had all the elements I was looking for, it just didn’t feel like me ” That’s when she messaged Freydell with a photo and asked what she thought Freydell’s response? “The tone is beautiful, but it doesn’t sit right Your body is more beautiful than what this dress shows.”

Tayler was sold

They met to talk color tones, structure, fabric, and fit After just one fitting, her nerves turned into excitement. “When I tried it on for the first time, it fit like a glove I couldn’t believe it ”

The rest of the wedding fell into place with the same level of personal intention Her uncle filmed their video, his cousin Katelyn (Kat’s Captured Moments) took their photos, and their officiant was a longtime mentor and friend Even the wedding favors, custom koozies, were made by a friend “We couldn’t stop saying how blessed we were to be surrounded by such generous, talented people.”

There was one more fullcircle detail, too: Tayler’s mom also had her own wedding dress custommade years ago by a local seamstress “I didn’t realize it until I was halfway into the process, but I had followed in her footsteps ”

Now, looking back, Tayler says choosing a custom dress was one of the best decisions she made “Freydell didn’t just create a gown, she made something that felt completely me. It was meaningful, it was personal, and it was perfect ”

In a world full of fast timelines, ready-made options, and overwhelm, Tayler’s story is a gentle reminder that sometimes, the most special moments come from slowing down and choosing a path that’s truly your own.

And now, we’re honored to share her full-circle story, with the photos to match

Essential Tips Essential Tips FOR HIRING YOUR WEDDING VIDEOGRAPHER

Hi everyone! Taylor Wentland with Precious Film Co. here! It’s been shared time and time again in articles, podcasts, and Facebook groups that couples who decided against hiring a videographer for their wedding day quickly regret their decision after the day flies by and the years pass on! Going into 2025, videographers are becoming nearly an essential vendor to book for a wedding day. As vendors, we're excited to see this shift because we also recognize how important and sentimental it is to see your memories in motion!

Instead of trying to sway you on whether or not to book a videographer (because we hope you've already said “YES!”), I’d love to share some tips on what to look for in potential videographers to find your best fit.

#1 Style Search

When searching across Google, Instagram, TikTok, etc , you may notice you’re seeing a few different types of wedding videos nowadays You’ll see the most popular: digital videos created on modern-day cameras Rising popular options that people are raving about include Super 8 film and VHS camcorder footage. Super 8 footage will look very vintage, while VHS camcorder footage may give you the feel of watching your parents’ or grandparents’ wedding films from the ’90s. All these video styles can offer different feels to your overall film, so it’s important to research which style resonates with you most.

#2 inquiring and interviewing

After falling in love with a style of videography, it's next time to look into people who offer that service! Instagram is a great place to start looking online, but some of the best referrals come from word of mouth Ask friends, family members, or co-workers if they know anyone they had a great experience with It’s much easier to gain insight into someone’s personality from a previous client of theirs Don’t be afraid to reach out and interview multiple videographers! We all understand the hustle of trying to find vendors, so we would never feel offended knowing you reached out to our friends as well. ;)

#3 wedding day shooting

Next up on your list to think about: how will my videographer operate on my wedding day? This is a great question to ask your prospective filmmaker! You’ll see a few different buzz words: documentary, cinematic, candid, etc When it comes down to it, it’s important to have a conversation as a couple and with your prospects if you’re looking for natural, unposed moments in your film or if you like the dramatic, cinematic type edits. This will ultimately come down to how your videographer will work on a wedding day, both individually and with your other vendors!

#4 deliverables

Lastly, it’s extremely important to ask your videographer what you’re going to get as an end product You may feel confused about what each person considers a “highlight film,” “full-length film,” and what in the world is “raw footage”? Make sure to get a breakdown from your filmmaker of what you’re going to receive at the end and ask them to explain it all to you

bonus questions

Whether you’ve already made the decision on booking a videographer for your special day or you’re still considering it, I hope these tips and questions help you in this process! Video is truly a great way to capture and keep the emotions of your day It allows you to relive the sights and sounds of your favorite day forever! Your wedding day will come and go in the blink of an eye, and having trusted professionals capturing your day is so important. Best of luck in your videographer hunt!

ACHIEVING LASTING HEALTH AND FITNESS FOR YOUR WEDDING

Q & A W I T H

B O D Y B U I L D I N G P R O

D O N I T A K N A U S :

As a bridal shop owner, I often hear brides, moms, and bridesmaids talking about wanting to lose weight or "tone up" before the big day It's clear that many brides aren't sure where to start this journey or how to set realistic goals. With all the pressures and expectations surrounding wedding planning, focusing on your health shouldn't feel overwhelming, it should feel empowering

That's why I reached out to Donita Knaus, owner of The Body Strength Training Shed. Donita isn't just a trusted friend of over 20 years; she's also been my personal health and fitness coach for the past eight years Passionate, supportive, and incredibly knowledgeable, Donita has a proven record of helping clients achieve healthy lifestyle changes that last long beyond their weddings.

Many brides want quick results for their wedding day. What’s your advice to help them get healthy the right way?

"Planning a wedding offers a fantastic opportunity to prioritize your health. Typically, wedding dates are set at least a year in advance My number-one piece of advice: budget for a personal trainer or coach Having accountability throughout the process is key A qualified coach can also guide you toward proper nutrition, which is critical to seeing real, lasting results."

What’s one common misconception brides often have about fitness and weight loss?

"I often hear clients say they want to 'tone up' or target specific fat areas But here's the thing: muscles become more visible as you lose over-

all body fat. There's no magic spot treatment Your muscles will grow and become defined through consistent weight training and proper nutrition Also, many women fear that lifting weights will make them bulky As a professional bodybuilder, I assure you: it takes years of focused training and very specific nutrition to achieve a muscular build. Strength training shapes your muscles and boosts your metabolism It’s truly the most effective way to permanently change your body "

How often should brides aim to work out?

"Realistically, just three weighttraining sessions per week combined with clean eating can dramatically transform your body, energy, and confidence Hiring a coach, even for just three months, can equip you with lifelong habits Remember, you don’t need a gym membership to start - there’s a routine for everyone, no matter your situation."

What’s the secret to staying motivated and consistent longterm?

"In my experience, successful clients share some key traits: They make health a nonnegotiable priority They work with someone knowledgeable to guide and motivate them. They understand that consistency is the real key to success

They learn to push past excuses rather than letting them dictate their results They avoid comparison, knowing it robs them of joy They seek to inspire others rather than simply relying on motivation alone."

What encouragement would you give brides who feel overwhelmed by fitness planning?

"Your wedding is about you and celebrating your love Don't make it about stress or unrealistic expectations. Just

When DIY Meets “Do You Have Time?”

A DJ’s Take on Wedding Day Realities

Hey there, MN Wed Magazine readers! For those who don’t know me, I’m Chaz better known as DJ Blakk owner and operator of DJ Blakk Entertainment LLC (djblakkcom) I've been living the wedding vendor dream for over 17 years now, and let me tell you it’s been a wild and crazy ride.

One interesting part of this industry is that while couples are in the thick of planning their big day, they often don’t see the patterns us vendors spot over and over again.

Recently, while chatting with a bride at a wedding show, she shared her plans for

a beautiful DIY wedding. I love DIY weddings. Seriously so many people have created stunning, heartfelt events with the help of their village But I’ve also heard my fair share of funny stories about things that didn’t exactly go to plan. While her excitement was bubbling over (as it should be!), I gently offered a little advice. Your time on your wedding day is precious It’s okay to ask for help and even better to bring in pros where it counts so you can soak it all in

Sure, having two aunts decorating while you're off getting your hair and makeup done? Lifesaver A cousin who bakes that designs your wedding cake? Awesome

A best friend who makes killer playlists and wants to keep the dance floor packed? Love that But here's the thing there’s a difference between accepting help and managing a small army of volunteers on the most important day of your life

What often gets overlooked is just how much couples end up juggling behind the scenes until the day is already here and stress creeps in. Between managing helpers and keeping things on schedule, it’s easy to miss the actual moments you’ve been planning for

About DJ Blakk

When couples look at a vendor’s price tag, it’s natural to think, “We could save money and just do that ourselves.” And truthfully, you probably could. But what’s the real cost? Time Energy Focus Peace of mind The ability to be fully present while marrying your best friend

“DIY doesn’t have to mean do it all yourself. Lean on your people—but give yourself permission to breathe, too.”

Look this isn’t a pitch to hire vendors for every single thing. It’s just a reminder: your time has value. And there are professionals out here who live and breathe this stuff. Let us take some of that weight off so you can laugh, dance, cry, and soak it all in

Craft the day you envision but don’t forget to give yourself space to experience it.

Chaz James, better known as DJ Blakk, is the ultimate hype guy and the heartbeat behind countless unforgettable wedding receptions With over 17 years of experience and a signature energy that’s downright contagious, DJ Blakk is all about creating moments that your guests will be talking about long after the last song plays He’s a master at reading the room, mixing the perfect tracks, and getting everyone from your grandma to your college crew out on the dance floor. Based in Central Minnesota and a House DJ at The Grands at Mulligans in Sartell, DJ Blakk brings a one-of-a-kind spark to every celebration Learn more or get the party started at djblakkcom

Let’s Talk Wedding Gifting, (Without the Overwhelm)

You’ve nailed the venue, found the dress, and sorted your seating chart (mostly) But now you ’ re staring down one of the most underrated parts of wedding planning gifting

Your people have shown up for you in big ways Whether they’re flying across the country or simply standing beside you at the altar, your crew deserves something meaningful and let’s be honest, you want it to feel special, not rushed or generic.

That’s where intentional gifting comes in. When done well, it doesn’t just check a box it adds real heart to your wedding day

Why Gifts Matter More Than You Think

From your best friends and bridal party to your parents and vendors, you ’ re surrounded by people who helped you get here. A thoughtful gift says: “I see you, and I couldn’t have done this without you. ”

But this isn’t about slapping your wedding date on a candle (Respectfully, most guests don’t want a keepsake with your initials ) The best gifts are personal to the recipient, useful, and something they’ll actually want to keep.

What’s Trending in Wedding Gifting

Today’s couples are skipping the bulk monogrammed gifts and leaning into intentional, quality gifting Some of the trends I love:

– Welcome boxes with local goodies for overnight guests

– Keepsakes with purpose (like a curated self-care kit or custom glassware)

– Handwritten letters tucked into gifts for parents or your wedding party

– Experience-based tokens, like a post-wedding dinner IOU or mini date-night kits

Want your gifting to be personal but don’t have time to DIY 20 boxes while also finalizing your seating chart? That’s where Prezzie comes in

Tips for Meaningful, Low-Stress Gifting

Start by thinking less about trends and more about thoughtfulness A handwritten note paired with a small, well-chosen item will go much further than a big box of random items Personalize it the right way. A bracelet with her initials, a whiskey glass etched with an inside joke those are the things that stick.

Make it functional Hosting an outdoor ceremony? Think cozy pashminas or a cute coffee tumbler Staying at a cabin with your crew? A welcome box with snacks, Advil, and a hydration packet hits the mark and feels elevated.

Presentation still counts Even a simple gift feels luxurious when it’s wrapped well and includes a handwritten note

And remember “custom” doesn’t have to mean overly branded. You don’t need to put your wedding hashtag on everything. Instead, think of personal touches that reflect them, not just your event

How Prezzie Gift Co. Makes It Easy

I work with you one-on-one to create thoughtful, beautiful, and cohesive gifts that feel like you and reflect how much you value your people From sourcing and packaging to handwritten cards and on-time delivery, I handle every detail so you don’t have to

Whether you want something classic and timeless, playful and bold, or totally outside the box I’ll help bring that vision to life It’s gifting made easy (and elevated)

A Final Word of Advice

Your wedding day goes by in a blur But gifts those linger They become memories your loved ones carry home A thank-you they’ll actually use A moment they won’t forget

So give yourself permission to make gifting easier. Choose something meaningful. Keep it personal. And if you need a hand? I’d be honored to help you make your gifts as unforgettable as the day itself

Multiple

OneDay, Dresses

TheRiseoftheMultiOutfitWedding

Your wedding day is one of the most photographed days of your life—and for many brides, selecting just one perfect dress feels nearly impossible. Why choose when you can showcase multiple stunning looks throughout your celebration?

The trend of wearing more than one bridal outfit has gained tremendous popularity, and we're here to help you navigate this stylish approach to your big day.

WhyBridesAreEmbracingMultipleLooks

The wedding day is long, often 12+ hours from getting ready to the last dance, and many brides are discovering the joy of refreshing their look throughout these memorable moments. Each outfit change creates a new opportunity for that magical "first look" reaction from guests and partners alike.

Beyond practicality, multiple looks allow you to embrace different facets of your personal style. Perhaps you're torn between a

romantic ballgown and a modern silhouettewith an outfit change, you can have both!

OneDress,MultipleLooks

Not ready to invest in two separate gowns? These ingenious transformable options give you multiple looks with a single base dress:

Detachable Overskirts: One of the most popular transformation options is the detachable overskirt. Many designers are now creating custom overskirts specifically for this purpose, from voluminous tulle clouds to structured silk trains. The best part? You'll have gorgeous photos of both looks while managing your budget more effectively than purchasing two separate gowns.

Convertible Sleeves: For Minnesota brides planning celebrations that extend from day to night (especially during our unpredictable springs and falls), detachable sleeves offer both style versatility and practical temperature control.

The Dress-Cutting Ceremony: For the truly bold bride, consider incorporating a dress-cutting into your reception! This dramatic tradition involves having your new spouse ceremonially cut your dress to a shorter length before dancing begins. This option requires careful planning with your seamstress to ensure the dress is constructed specifically for this transformation. The original hem is typically finished and hidden under an overskirt, ready to be revealed after the ceremonial cutting.

Complete Outfit Changes: Planning for Success

If you're opting for entirely different looks throughout your day, these tips will help ensure smooth transitions:

Strategic Timeline Planning

Work with your wedding planner or coordinator to schedule 15-20 minute breaks for each outfit change. Many Minnesota brides plan their first change during dinner service (after they've eaten but while guests are still enjoying their meal) and a second change before latenight festivities begin.

Designated Changing Spaces

Confirm with your venue that you'll have a private, comfortable space for changing. Some venues offer areas specifically designed for outfit changes, complete with full-length mirrors, good lighting, and comfortable seating.

Assemble Your Change Team

Assign a trusted bridesmaid or two to assist with the change. They should be familiar with how the new outfit works, including any complex fastenings or accessories that need to be swapped.

Photography Considerations

Communicate your outfit change plans with your photographer well in advance. Many photographers suggest scheduling mini "first look" moments after each change to capture your partner's reaction to your new ensemble.

MakingMultipleLooksWorkFinancially

While wearing multiple outfits might seem extravagant, there are smart ways to manage your budget: Consider renting your second or third look

Invest in a higher-quality main dress with detachable elements

Look for sample sales for your reception outfit

Shop non-bridal designers for after-party looks

Repurpose family heirlooms for one of your ensembles

TheFinalTouch:

Create cohesion between your different looks with thoughtfully selected accessories: Choose one statement jewelry piece to wear with all outfits

Use the same veil or headpiece in different ways

Select shoes that complement all your looks (comfort is key!)

Consider a signature fragrance that ties all your looks together

Whatever combination of looks you choose, remember that your wedding day should reflect your personal style and priorities.

Whether you're showcasing two completely different dresses or cleverly transforming one gown throughout the day, the most important element is how confident and beautiful you feel as you celebrate this momentous occasion.

Love Story

IN A NUTSHELL

Every love story is unique and beautiful, and we adore hearing how couples from Central Minnesota found their happily ever after. This issue, we're sharing some short and sweet "Love Stories in a Nutshell" – couples sharing how they met, their proposal stories, or a special moment that captures their love. Grab a tissue (or two) and dive into these real-life love stories from right here in our own backyard!

Riley and Kayla

Riley and Kayla met at Zorbaz through mutual friends one night, and he asked for her number to which she replied “not interested ” He was persistent and added her on Facebook the next day, and a year later he messaged her out of the blue and asked her to go to a party with him. And, she rejected him... again. But, that ask led them to get to know each other more and build a friendship Riley eventually asked for a date again, but this time he had just applied for an out of state job, and Kayla told him if he didn’t get the job she would go out with him. Well, he ended up not getting the position and she kept her word. Their first date was supposed to be a short, and instead it turned into a 6 hour long dinner date that they both felt flew by and they’ve been together ever since Their story started in 2018, they started dating in 2020, they were married in 2023, and just had their first baby in 2024 In Kayla’s words, "I’m so grateful the man was persistent because it landed us here today

Gillian and Josh

Gillian and Josh first met in high school and quickly became inseparable. The two shared countless memories attending school dances, sporting events and hanging out with friends at Josh’s house, which was dubbed the “hangout spot” due to his family’s large barn turned entertainment space After five years of dating, traveling the world and graduating from college, the love birds decided it was the right time to tie the knot! And what better place to get married alongside their family and friends then at the family farm where all the good times and merriment commence! On May 11, 2024, surrounded by blossoming cherry trees and rows of pines, Mr and Mrs Thompson said “I do” before dancing the night away in their favorite place to be!

Chris and Mariah

When Chris and I met in 2019, something we connected over was traveling and spending time outdoors. I had a personal goal of visiting all of the state parks in Minnesota Chris became my hiking buddy and joined me in visiting all of the parks. At each one we visited, it was a tradition to get the passport stamp for that park One day, Chris planned a trip for us to go hiking at Lake Maria State Park in Monticello When we got to the trail center, there was a new stamp on one of the tables Instead of it saying the park name, the stamp read “Will you marry me?” It was definitely my favorite stamp to collect on our state parks adventures together I of course said yes!

and Frankie

We first met each other on a dating app in June 2020! After about three days of texting, we made plans to meet in person for dinner at Minnehaha Falls. It ended up being too hot out to go for a hike there, so instead we met at a restaurant in south Minneapolis for dinner Morgan still insisted they eat outside (because it was sunny and gorgeous) Frankie asked Morgan to be his girlfriend in July 2020 and she said “Yes” on September 2nd, 2024 on a hiking trip near Maiden Rock Overlook

Calista and Tyler

Tyler and I met in high school where we dated for a couple of months then broke up and life took us on different paths. Little did we both know that the person we both met in high school would become the most significant chapter in the story of our lives Fast forward seven years later and our paths converged once again We quickly rekindled what was once before and have been inseparable ever since Our first year together we welcomed our fur baby, Windsor Our second year we got engaged in Clearwater, Florida Finally, our third year we got married!

Amanda and Eric

On Tuesday May 7th, 2024 after work Amanda and Eric were sitting in the living room talking about their day and trying to figure out what to make for supper. After agreeing on what to make Amanda went downstairs to grab what she needed out of the freezer After returning Eric asked Amanda to come back to the living room that’s when he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him Was she ever surprised and of course said Yes!

Riley and Dani

In 2022, Riley and Dani began two cherished traditions: a Holiday Date Night exploring festive Minnesota venues and writing New Year’s predictions to be read the following year This culminated in Riley’s proposal on NYE 2023. He kept all venues secret, reading old predictions at each stop The final destination was a private Nordic village dinner at midnight. The staff ready was ready to capture the moment, but Dani unexpectedly retreated to people-watch inside, delaying the plans Eventually, Riley guided her back out, where they read their final predictions both had written “We will be engaged in 2023 ” After a comical fumble for the ring, Riley knelt and proposed Though Dani says she blacked out from excitement, they both remember one thing clearly she said yes.

Morgan

Breanna and Hunter

Breanna and Hunter’s love story began in May 2019 with a swipe on Tinder and a first date at Olive Garden in St Cloud. Too nervous to eat, they ditched dinner and spent the evening talking and laughing at Clearwater Beach, ending the night with a kiss under the stars. From there, life moved forward: Breanna graduated college, Hunter bought a house, and the two began building a life together In March 2024, the couple took a birthday getaway to a cabin in Ashland, Wisconsin - one of their favorite places On the 15th, they headed to Madeline Island with friends, just to explore or so Breanna thought Hunter had a ring in his pocket and a plan in motion After a couple of foiled proposal spots (thanks to Breanna’s fear of cliffs), he finally found the perfect overlook above Lake Superior There, he dropped to one knee and asked the question she’d waited over five years to hear Her answer? A tearful, joyful, “YES!”

Leah and Carl

Leah and Carl met during their freshman year at the College of Saint Benedict & Saint John’s University Leah was born and raised in Arizona and Carl in Saint Cloud, MN About 3 years of doing long distance outside the school year and spending almost every holiday apart, Carl decided to come to Arizona to spend New Year’s Eve with Leah for the first time. A few hours before the ball drop Carl convinced Leah to go on a walk around the neighborhood at sunset. Little did Leah know her family and friends had helped Carl plan for the proposal to happen then Needless to say, they then were able to celebrate and share their first New Year’s kiss as fiancés

We want to hear your story!

Email your Love Story in a Nutshell to hello@mnwedmagazine com with the subject line “Love Story” to be featured in the next issue!

Haley and Adrian

Adrian and I met as kids on the playground and reconnected again and again throughout the years first in middle school, then high school Each time, it felt like God was gently weaving our paths back together We weren’t always ready for each other, but the love was always there By the time we reunited in high school, it was like no time had passed I knew in my heart that he was the one God had chosen for me Now, six years and two beautiful children later, we’re planning our wedding day with a deep gratitude for the journey that brought us here Our relationship hasn’t always been easy, but our love has always felt steady, and with God at the center, we know we can get through anything Every day, I thank Him for the life I once prayed for.
