New lab tests for immunity

Since our response to SARS-COV-2 is also mediated by T cells, measuring T cell activation is critical to assess the full extent of a person’s immunity. A study done June 2022 demonstrated that T cell measures may be more useful than antibody titers (amounts) for level of immunity.

The existing antibody “im munity” test is expensive, time consuming, and doesn’t quan tify the level of immunity. This explains the FDA’s position on immunity testing for Covid.

1) natural immunity (could have a genetic component);

Within the past month, advances in analyzing the antibodies (IgM and IgG) to the receptor binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2 have occurred. These antibodies block the SARS-CoV-2 RBD from binding to ACE2, the human receptor that the virus uses to infect cells.

or temporary immunity. It has been reported that immu nity may last as long as eight months after Covid infection.

3) prior exposure to Covid, which then protects against future infections.

As of February 2022 the FDA has stated: “Currently authorized SARS-CoV-2 an tibody tests have not been evaluated to assess the level of protection provided by an immune response to COV ID-19 vaccination.”

SARS-CoV-2 and other vi ruses have shown a strong correlation between the amount of neutralizing an tibody circulating in an indi vidual’s bloodstream and their likelihood of infection.

Some “sick” individuals may assume their symptoms are cold or allergy-related and choose not to test. Although these individuals would have developed Covid antibodies, they may have low viral loads making at-home tests incapa ble of detection.

This is essential as vari ants like omicron evade most of the neutralizing ability of antibodies. In this way, tests that can measure T cells may provide more evidence of immunity towards emerging variants.Insummary, it is unlikely that an immunity test that all scientists and governing agencies agree is useful will be available immediately. As a result, we should continue to be mindful and take precau tions as one sees fit in regards to SARS-CoV-2 exposure.

Specifically, a test was de veloped that can detect the presence of antibodies that block the SARS-CoV-2 RBD from binding to ACE2.

Hopefully as vaccines con tinue to be refined, we may have lasting immunity postvaccination in the future as well as a reliable way to assess if we are immune.

Post-Covid infection the body responds with antibody production as well as in creased production of B cells and T cells to attack the virus. Those that are immunocom promised or even pregnant may not mount an antibody response.

Humility is taboo in here, often viewed as being “soft” on inmates. They are told that inmates are manipulative, un trustworthy, criminals wait ing to take advantage of you. This is the mindset of most corrections officers.

You can call this a followup to the “Rush City Prison Promotes Violence” piece I wrote [MSR, Aug. 18]. I was approached by a corrections officer who wanted to say that they actually thought the article was “impressive,” but I failed to highlight some of the issues that the correc tions officers face.

“The Beatle” murdered four innocent Americans based on revenge for the U.S. mur dering 400,000 Muslims. This makes perfect sense, since the U.S. murdered 100,000

It’s almost as if failure is the desired goal. We are in America, and there is noth ing that would get in the way of us achieving success. We went to the moon, people— the moon, in outer space.

Do you feel that you should establish dominance? Do you feel that you should be like a drill sergeant? Would you lock them in their cells for 22-23 hours a day?

Sounds like a zoo, huh?

People that commit crime are broken, and broken peo ple need help. The D.O.C. does not do enough in aiding in rehabilitation. This is FACT. Staff should be trained in re habilitative practices similar to rehab for drug addictions.

It becomes political like any corporately structured institution. Nice guys finish last is a real thing.

There are COs that are re ally good people, with the best intentions. The problem

I agree that we have a long way to go to repair wealth inequity in our country. We need to keep pushing for systemic solutions that go far beyond the scope of this relief program. At the same time, it’s a good thing that 90 percent of debt reduction under the program will go to borrowers who earn under

Some make it to sergeant, but when it comes to moving up to the levels of lieutenant, captain, or associate warden, where you can make a sal ary of $100,000+, it becomes mostly achievable by writing a lot of inmates up, having a high number of bodies that you put in segregation, or be ing connected to those that are in power.

In my 16 years of incarcer ation, the hardest thing I’ve had to do is change and main tain it. You have to literally re program your brain, meticu lously scrutinizing every view and belief that you acquired

It is a process that is very hard to achieve on your own. There will be a lot of setbacks and obstacles. Relentless help is what inmates need, not the current “help” that the D.O.C. offers. It’s not enough—true help of the humanitarian kind is needed. We are not all ir redeemable.Understand that the judge already passed judgment, and it’s no one else’s place to judge. I am a person that has been cursed with empathy, and I am also a student of log ic. So in all honesty, there are multiple sides to this complex story. One thing that all sides need to understand is that the ultimate goal of the De partment of Corrections is to rehabilitate citizens that commit crimes. The recidi vism rate would tell you that rehabilitation is not a focus in the D.O.C., that the rehabili tative “efforts” by the D.O.C. are grossly inefficient, like a 90%+ failure rate.

Opinion

If a criminal comes to prison to become a better criminal or a worse human, then what is the criminal jus tice system for? A system to quench our personal thirst for revenge? Crime is a learned behavior. Some people are born into crime, destined by their environment, but people that commit crimes are not crimes in themselves. Crime is an action.
