Its advantages are that it does not require surgery or electricity, fits in a pocket, and no additional supplies are needed. It is especially de sirable if the patient travels frequently, because although CPAP can be brought onto the plane without being counted as baggage or carry on, the abil ity to use it on a plane is limited by the need for electricity, as well the very visible mask and hose. The gold standard of treatment of obstructive sleep apnea is continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP. Sometimes, depending on severity of apnea, desatura tion, and specific type of apnea, bilevel therapy or BiPAP may be needed to completely rid one of the respiratory events.
CPAP’s huge advantage is that there is no downtime or surgical intervention that is needed, it is widely available, and for the most part it pro vides instantaneous relief to persons with sleep apnea. Its drawbacks are related to needing to be plugged in or the expense of the battery that is not often covered by insurance; daily cleaning and use of an externally visible in terface with monthly replace ment of filters; and quarterly to biannual replacement of the mask or its parts.

Further, schools play a principal role in perpetuating ideological racism through a social studies curriculum that is designed to promote White supremacy by distort ing American history in such a way that it portrays Whites as agents of progress and build ers of civilizations and Blacks as insignificant objects or de ficient characters.
Telling that fuller story has always been necessary to make the American dream real for everyone. The Obamas re main a beautiful, transforma tive example of what Ameri
The city stands to lose Black representation in Con gress and have less represen tation in the state legislature. Knowing what the impact could be, voters have spoken out forcefully against the new redistricting maps from pul pits to street corners to the state capitol and even before the state courts.
The racism that inheres in the U.S. public school system can only be fully dealt with through a vigorous, sustained political struggle by the pro gressive people of all races to radically transform and de mocratize American society.
Center of the American Experiment attacks Minnesota Racial Equity Plan
In essence, there is a ra cial and class tracking system in public education that re produces the race and class structure of society and per petuates the racial academic gaps. Powerful political and economic forces determine these tracks, based on race as well as socioeconomic class.

human rights and justice.
“And too often in this coun try, people feel like they have to look a certain way or act a certain way to fit in, that they have to make a lot of money or come from a certain group or class or faith in order to mat ter. But what we’re looking at today—a portrait of a biracial kid with an unusual name and the daughter of a water pump operator and a stay-at-home mom—what we are seeing is a reminder that there’s a place for everyone in this country.”
Katherine Kersten, a found er of the Center of the Ameri can Experiment and former columnist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, wrote an antiBlack opinion piece that ap peared in the Minneapolis Star Tribune on August 28, 2022.
“This country is not about blood or pedigree or wealth. It’s a place where everyone should have a fair shot.”
Kersten’s fierce opposition to the Equity 2030 plan is based on her biased observations and beliefs about what is happening in the Minnesota public K-12 system. She asserts that Min neapolis public high schools, in their quest for equity, have lowered or eliminated academic standards so that grades are not based on the quality of a stu dent’s performance.
The current reality dictates that we do not sit out any election. We need to resolute ly register, educate, motivate and turn out voters. In every election. Every time.
colorblind standards rather than race in their grading will risk being labeled racist and may incur daunting job conse quences by those whom Ker sten calls the state’s “equity and inclusion czars.”
The goal of the state of Minnesota is to train a more educated and competent workforce. A measure of the goal is that 70% of workers (all races and ethnicities) be tween the ages of 25-44 have a postsecondary degree by 2025. The basic goal of the Equity 2030 plan is to raise the skill sets of all students to build a more competent work force in Minnesota.
The public school system is structured along racial and class lines. In this stratified structure, the highest quality schools are in upscale White residential areas, and those of lowest quality are found in im poverished Black areas.

“That’s why, for me, this day isn’t about me or Barack. It’s not even about these beauti ful paintings. It’s about telling that fuller story—a story that includes every single American in every single corner of this country so that our kids and grandkids can see something more for themselves.”
When Charles Diggs, Jr. won the election to Congress in Michigan’s 13th District in 1954, he launched nearly seven decades in which the city of Detroit had at least one Black member of Congress.

Kersten’s attack
Kersten’s racist demeaning
The Center of the American Experiment researches and produces papers on Minne sota’s economy and education. It proposes policies that em phasize limited government, personal responsibility, and capitalism.
For Black ministers in our network, voting and civic par ticipation are acts of faith and so much more. As Reverend Dr. Steve Bland, Jr., pastor of Liberty Temple Baptist Church in Detroit, said, “It’s not about left or right. Splitting Detroit into two districts was an insult. But we have faith and must “deal with our self-interest by voting in every election!”
In it, she attacked the Equity 2030 plan of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system and stigmatized Black, American Indian, and Latinx students and their families.
It’s part of a long-term effort to sabotage advancements in human rights and justice
For example, she cites statistics for Roosevelt High School in 2020: “Black stu dents’ graduation rate was 77%, but in 2019 only 23% of the school’s Black students who took state tests were proficient in reading and 10% in math.” She contends that “Equity-equal outcomes- has been achieved on paper, but at a devastating cost: A high school diploma has become essentially meaningless.”
Redistricting is voter suppression too
Mrs. Obama added: “That is what this country is about. It’s not about blood or pedigree or wealth. It’s a place where ev eryone should have a fair shot, whether you’re a kid taking two buses and a train just to get to school; or a single moth er who is working two jobs to put some food on the table; or an immigrant just arriving, get ting your first apartment, forg ing a future for yourself in a place you dreamed of.
But we don’t hear enough about redistricting as another weapon being used to intimi date voters and keep us from exercising our constitutional rights. It is erasing us from Congress and state legislatures. We need to call it out and chal lenge it where we see it.
That’s likely to change this year because of redistricting. Detroit no longer has major ity-Black congressional dis tricts. And in the first primary election with newly drawn district lines, a Black candi date did not win the Demo cratic contest in the heavily Democratic 13th. That means the city is likely to lack Black representation in Congress for the first time in decades.

The major goal of the Equity 2030 plan, which is a product of analyses and discussions by university trustees, adminis trators, faculty members, stu dent groups, and government officials, is to raise the per formance of all students and reduce the academic achieve ment gaps among students based on family income, eth nicity and race.
The traditional portrait in stallation ceremony was ig nored and delayed during the last administration, but this week, with President Biden, First Lady Biden, Vice President Harris, and Second Gentleman Emhoff all in attendance, once again the Obamas made spec tacular and moving history.
“As Barack said, if the two of us can end up on the walls of the most famous address in the world, then, again, it is so important for every young kid who is doubting themselves to believe that they can, too,” said former First Lady Michelle Obama last week.
Both President Obama and First Lady Obama acknowledged the meaning of the moment as they spoke, and Mrs. Obama expressed the special hope that these portraits will help set a new standard of representation for our nation’s children.
Finally, she blames Black, American Indian, and Latinx students and their fami lies and the social promo tion practices of the public schools. In her view, the low academic performance of Black students is caused by their lack of a hard work ethic and self-discipline.
Impacts of race and class
For many people, Mrs. Obama’s remarks about their White House portraits brought to mind the similar impact of the Obamas’ earlier portraits for the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery collection, es pecially the much-publicized photograph of two-year-old Parker Curry, a beautiful Black girl, craning her neck and star ing at Amy Sherald’s life-size portrait of Mrs. Obama in awe. Parker and her mother Jessica have since written a series of children’s books, including the New York Times bestsell ing picture book that recreates that day at the museum: Park er Looks Up: An Extraordinary Moment. The book captures the moment when Parker whispered that she could see a queen— “unable to look away, to move, to breathe.”
It also noted the queen in the painting had “rich brown skin, just like Parker, and kind, familiar eyes that reminded Parker of…her mother, her grandmother, her sister, and yes—even of herself.”

Kersten claims that the Eq uity 2030 plan is a threat to academic merit. She believes that underperforming stu dents who do not meet high academic standards will be given unearned credentials to just make it appear that racial equity goals are met.
I know that a lot of media coverage of this summer’s primaries has focused on one big question: Will Trump-style, MAGA candidates win or lose? But there’s another question that needs to be asked: How harmful are the impacts of redistricting on our communi ties in this year’s elections and those to come?
