Sitting in the middle of the winter season seems like an excellent time to add a little encouragement to the day! The cold weather, shorter days, and many challenging conditions sometimes feel like an uphill battle. It is tough when facing early sunset, icy sidewalks, bitter winds, and still navigating the daily obstacles that come routinely with our everyday lives.

However, I want to remind everyone that winter also offers us opportunities to grow.

Rather than simply hibernating through the cold, we can find moments of beauty, strength, and change despite the hardships. Just like the resilient spirit of our veterans, winter teaches us to persevere. It shows us that despite the cold and darkness, there is consistently hope. We can discover our inner strength, push past our limitations, and achieve great things during these times - even in the winter!

Winter also reminds me of our need for others. As we bundle up to face the cold, let's also band together to overcome challenges. We find warmth and smiles in the company of loved ones, friends, and the incredible veteran community at MNPVA. During this season, I encourage you to hold on to that tireless determination and resilience that defines our organization. We must continue to support each other, offer a helping hand, and inspire each other. Together, we can conquer any obstacle that winter may bring.

As always, I am grateful for you, our members, our volunteers, and the generous supporters of Minnesota Paralyzed Veterans of America as we strive to meet our mission to serve veterans with spinal cord injuries and disorders.

Like a child, be happy for no reason!

SNSO Update Tami Anderson Happy New Year - 2024 Here we are in 2024, where has time gone? The beginning of every year gives us an opportunity to get ourselves organized and ready to file taxes. In the organization process, this is a good time to verify your life insurance policies, to make sure the beneficiaries are correct. And verify that you have a folder for all of your important documents that your spouse and/or children are going to need in case of an emergency. It is also a good time to reevaluate your finances and investments to make sure they are in order, and that there are no fraudulent charges on your bank statements.

There are people who try to get our personal information, be sure you are NOT giving anyone that you haven’t verified in some way, your personal information, for example, social security number, banking information etc… Stay vigilant and DO NOT SHARE information if you do not know the person and/or entity that is calling.

ALS News: There is a new clinical research trial that Houston VA Veterans can enroll in. ALS Clinical Coordinator Richel Aliboso, NP, Principal Investigator, Dr. James Orengo and Study Coordinator Michelle Espiritu are thrilled for the Houston Veterans to get the opportunity to offer ten Veterans with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis to receive groundbreaking cell therapy targeted at reducing neuroinflammation as a treatment for the neurodegenerative disease.

What they know is that neuroinflammation fuels the ALS disease process. They are believing this new treatment, which involves calming the immune system in the central nervous system, holds great promise in halting the disease. “Participants will receive 9 intravenous infusions of the study drug over a six-month period. The goal is to significantly slow the progression of the disease to allow Veterans to maintain their quality of life.”

The Houston VA Medical Center is one of the first sites for the novel T regulatory cells therapy for ALS with hopes that this trial is the first of many to develop new therapies for Veterans with neurodegenerative disorders.”

Hello Sisters and Brothers, Guess what? I've got something really exciting to tell you! I've been working on a super special book called "Elysium: Adventures of a Spirit-Guided Life." It's a book made by me, Todd Fringer, and a very famous author, Raymond Aaron.

This book, "Elysium," isn't just any book. It's like a big, fun party celebrating the adventure we call life.

We put our own stories and secrets in there, showing how awesome it is to let your spirit lead the way.

I can't wait to share more about how we made this book, the cool stuff in it, and how it can make your life more exciting. We're going on a journey of finding out more about ourselves and waking up our spirits.

So, get ready to jump into a book where every page feels like a new adventure!

I want to chat about something really important and fun: how Elysium: Adventures of a Spirit-Guided Life." Imagine it like a treasure map, but instead of searching for gold, it helps you find joy and cool life lessons.

Life's going to have happy days and some tough ones too, but what really matters is how we live through them and enjoy the journey.

MNPVA wants to make it easier for members to attend activities in their communities and just for fun!

Reimbursement is available for activities like concerts, sporting events, and theater!

Reimbursement may include the cost of admission, lodging, transportation, meals/food, non-alcoholic beverages, and parking for MNPVA members. Reimbursements cannot be made until event date has passed and attendance confirmed by signature on form.

Itemized receipts required and must be accompanied by a signed reimbursement request form. Some restrictions apply.

Please note: FY23-24 shall not exceed $1000/member. Availability of funds are subject to change at anytime. Reimbursement amount is set each year in October by the Board of Directors based on budget.

MNPVA BOWLING Our chapter continues to support active bowling groups that meet weekly. All skill levels are welcome, and no commitment is required. Bowling once a week has many benefits for both the body and mind. Current locations include:

Bone as Regulator of Energy Balance and Male Fertility after SCI: A Pilot Study University of Minnesota researchers are seeking participants with or without a spinal cord injury for a clinical trial. We are interested in how bone health affects insulin sensitivity and sperm health in adult males with spinal cord injuries. Participation in the research will take approximately 5 hours over 3-4 visits. Compensation of $200 will be provided for participation.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota (UMN) are conducting an anonymous online survey to gather information about individuals living with spinal cord injury (SCI) who have used psychedelic drugs after their SCI. The Brain Body Mind Lab is recruiting participants with complete or incomplete spinal cord injury to compare the effect of Remotely-delivered Cognitive Multisensory Rehabilitation versus Remotely-delivered Exercise to improve sensation and movement after a spinal cord injury.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

•Be 18-75 years of age •Be able to hear and comprehend the English instructions given in the study •Have a complete or incomplete spinal cord injury (>1year) •Be able to self-transfer with some assistance and push a call button •Have an available care-partner to assist with the interventions •Not be pregnant •Be medically stable and no MRI contraindicationsParticipants will: •Either receive 12 weeks of physical therapy with Remotely-delivered Cognitive Multisensory Rehabilitation OR Remotely-delivered exercise, 3x/week, 45min/session for 12 weeks •Have 2 MRI scans of the brain + 3 clinical assessments •Fill in questionnaires related to function, quality of life, and body awareness

VA Research Study seeking veterans with spinal cord injuries who use wheelchairs and who use a lift to transfer to their wheelchair.

The purpose of this research study is to assess and refine our CMAP system (Comprehensive Mobile Assessment of Pressure), a seated pressure mapping system. Participation will last about 4 weeks.

Participants must have a smart phone and a home wifi connection.

Participants will use a pressure mapping device in their wheelchairs at home – this device sends seating information to a research therapist who will monitor activity and make recommendations for pressure injury prevention.

Participants will complete surveys and participate in interviews.

The study provides up to $100 compensation to participants.

The principal investigator of this study is Christine Olney, PhD, RN. Anyone interested can call the study coordinator at 612-467-4806.

Answering the Call:

If you have a phone, you can help a Veteran in crisis Everyone has a role to play in Veteran suicide prevention, and you don’t have to be an expert to talk to a Veteran facing challenges.

A simple phone call can help a Veteran in crisis, whose emotional struggles and health challenges may lead to thoughts of suicide. Talking with a Veteran in crisis may seem daunting, but your conversation can mean the difference between a tragic outcome and a life saved.

When talking to a Veteran in crisis, remain calm and listen for signs of distress or other clues that might indicate they need immediate help.

Examples include: • Crying, yelling, rage, or anger • Making concerning statements, such as: • “My family would be better off if I wasn’t here.”

• “I can’t go on like this.”

• “No one can help me.”

Ask directly in a nonjudgmental tone: “Are you thinking about taking your own life?”

If the response is “NO” (NOT suicidal) and they do not appear to be in crisis

If the response is “YES” (individual confirms they’re thinking about suicide)

Route the Veteran to appropriate local resources.

You can find resources in your area, including local suicide prevention coordinators and crisis centers, using our Resource Locator (VeteransCrisisLine.net/LocalResources).

Determine whether the Veteran is at imminent risk and if they’ve already inflicted self-harm or injured others or has an immediate plan to do so, with access to means.

Follow the below steps to help keep the Veteran safe.
