The 55th Annual 2014

Great Pyramid Race Local legend has it that two Gordonvale cane farmers, while quenching their thirst at the local pub, decided to settle an argument with a race to the peak of the nearby Walsh’s Pyramid.

This was no ordinary race. A wager was made between the two to see who could run the race in the quickest possible time and it created so much interest that a local bookie took bets on the outcome. From this unlikely start has evolved “The Great Pyramid Race”.

The first official race was organised in 1959 to coincide with Queensland’s Centenary Celebrations and it has become an annual event where some of the finest and fittest present themselves and strive to conquer this formidable mountain in unbelievable record times. “A never-ending uphill scramble and a ‘controlled’ downhill free fall” The event and the supporting markets, entertainment and music, cultural and craft events, children’s activities and rides and amusements have become the foremost community event for Gordonvale and surrounding areas, growing every year since its inception in 1959.

Festival activities include the main event, The Great Pyramid Race, as well as other sporting activities including a 5km Cross Country Race and a 1500m Road Race around Norman Park (for competitors from 10 years of age).

New in 2014 is the 5km Charity Run, with all profits raised going to nominated charities, not-for-profits and community groups. There will also be a diverse selection of performers, musicians, workshops and roving entertainers to keep the crowds enthralled, culminating in a fireworks spectacular. This year sees great representation from local businesses,

organisations, school groups and individuals - all committed to showcasing the unique community of Gordonvale.

The event, held on August 9th, is expected to attract up to 13,000 spectators (local, interstate and international), making it one of the largest and most vibrant events in the region. The program of event for the day.

Thank you from Ride for Isabel The Ride for Isabel organising committee has thanked everyone involved in the fifth annual event which is expected to again raise more than $10,000 for Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Support (SANDS) Queensland this year once all fundraising is finalised.

Committee spokesperson Helen Underwood said the event started as a one day 85 kilometre ride in 2010 and has grown to a three day 316 kilometre cycling event this year. “The ride departed Gordonvale at 6.30am on Friday 25 July and travelled up the Gillies Range across the scenic Tablelands and included overnight stops in Malanda and Innisfail before returning to Gordonvale,” Ms Underwood said.

“The number of participants in the event continues to grow and this year included riders from Townsville, Mackay and Brisbane. Despite some wet conditions everyone had a great time and there was a great sense of camaraderie amongst the cyclists and volunteers.”

Ride founder Curtis Pitt instigated the ride to honour the memory of his baby daughter Isabel who was stillborn at 41 weeks in 2008. “Kerry and I vowed to do whatever we could to raise funds for SANDS, which provides much-needed counselling and support services for families and those affected by the sudden death of an infant or through reproductive loss. “Bereaved parents often find the need to talk to someone who has had an experience similar to their own.

SANDS offers 24-hour support services via telephone and email as well as regular support meetings.”

“To put the prevalence of stillbirth into context, in 2009, 331 people died on the state’s roads. In the same year, Queensland Health figures showed 447 babies in the state were stillborn. That’s 447 families that are directly affected by tragedies that are still so often not talked about.”

“All the proceeds from the Ride for Isabel will go to SANDS Queensland and will support counselling and bereavement services, as well as events like the ‘Walk to Remember’ right here in Far North Queensland.”

A home for Herbie Animal Rehoming Tablelands rescue unwanted and abandoned cats, kittens, dogs and pups in and around the Tablelands and protect these pets in foster homes until the right forever homes are found.

Our aim is to stop the cycle of unwanted pets through desexing and by raising awareness by owners why they should desex their pets to help prevent the high rates of euthanasia in our pounds. All our cats, kittens, dogs and pups have been micro-chipped, vaccinated, desexed, wormed and flea treated before they leave our care and go to their forever homes.

With a new route up the Gillies Range, it is hoped that the Ride for Isabel can start and finish in Gordonvale each year.

Vandalism at Alley Park

On Saturday 12 July some misguided vandals broke into the Alley Park toilet blocks and caused some major damage. Every toilet was smashed, water pipes broken, sinks ripped off the wall.

This unwanted and wilful damage will cost the community $30,000 to repair. $30,000 that could have been used to improve children's playgrounds of render footpaths safe. The Council will replace the toilets with stainless steel bowls, similar to prison ones to ensure they cannot be damaged, for that I apologise to the community of Gordonvale.

As a side note, Council has allocated $200,000 this financial year for detailed engineering designs for the improvements to Alley Park. This will include, in the first stage, two new fields and upgrading car parking. This sort of improved developments in the area are only placed in jeopardy by vandalism like this.

Business Guide LAWN MOWING

Horticultural Heroes at Cairns Show As part of the Junior Landcare program at Gordonvale State School, entries were submitted to the horticulture section of the Cairns Show.

Students working with staff and parent volunteers worked with students to create novelty arrangements out of fruit and vegetables. Gordonvale State School was awarded first prize in the Senior Novelty Arrangement of Vegetables and Second Prize in the Junior novelty Arrangement of Vegetables.

A collection of vegetables grown by the school in the Permaculture Partnerships Garden was also submitted in the School section with Gordonvale State School taking out First Prize.

Seniors Week 2014 S e n i o r s We e k i s a n o p p o r t u n i t y f o r Queenslanders of all ages to join together and celebrate the valuable contributions of older people.

In 2014, Seniors Week will be celebrated from 16-24 August. Seniors Week aims to: improve community attitudes towards older people and ageing, facilitate community participation and activity by older people, including those from Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships. Seniors Week is currently coordinated by the Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland, which receives Queensland Government funding to collaboratively plan, run and subsidise Seniors Week events and activities.

Stars in Sustainability

By Sandra Charlton Gordonvale State School is a finalist in the National Landcare Awards in the Junior Landcare Team Award category. Gordonvale State School was the winner of the Junior Landcare Team Award in the 2013 QLD Landcare Awards and as a result, joins seven other State and Territory finalists in that category.

Gordonvale State School is delighted to be representing Queensland and showcasing some of the great environmental sustainability work being undertaken in our area. Students at this Far North Queensland primary school have engaged in a number of important projects and have won numerous awards from a range of organisations including the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Gordonvale State School’s ‘Excelsior: A Whole Community Approach to Sustainability’ is used as an example for other schools to follow and has been hailed in Queensland Parliament as a leading sustainability education hub. As part of the awards, Landcare Australia is running a People's Choice Award.

Gordonvale Touch Grand Final Night Saturday night the 26th of July saw the closing of the Gordonvale Touch winter season with grand final played in all divisions in front of large crowds of locals.

In the ladies A grade Heroes defeated Toros 6-2 and in the mens A grade Gunnas defeated Edge Hill Accountancy 6 -2.

In a close match Charlies Angels defeated the Taipans in the ladies B grade final. The summer competition commences in about three weeks’ time and nominations are now being accepted. Touch football is a fun, fast and exciting game and there are grades for all skill levels from raw beginners to the A grade players. Gordonvale touch encourages families to join and it is a great way for families to play in the same team no matter what skill level you are at. Once again a fantastic night organized by the Gordonvale Touch Committee.

My paternal grandparents both emigrated from Denmark. My Grandfather came here in 1871 at the age of 18 and my grandmother came in 1884 at the age of 17 with her sister. My grandparents married at Croydon on the goldfields in 1888, then moved to Bundaberg, where my father Louis was born in 1889. By 1896 the family moved to Cairns and two more girls were born Florence and Mary. Whilst in the Cairns four more sons were born, Alfred, Oscar, David and Earnest and finally Ella a girl finished the family.

My grandparents decided to go north and take up sugar cane growing. Land was selling for two shillings and sixpence(25 cents) an acre. My grandfather was then persuaded to grown rice at Smithfield, but this proved to be a disaster. He then carted produce for Chinese marker gardeners to the Freshwater railway siding. Later he bought a 500 acre (200 hectare) property called ‘Mountain View’ on the Brinsmead Road along Freshwater Creek. Here he took up dairying and sold the milk in Cairns. Later he and my father Louis carted gravel to Cairns, some of which was used to build the Bolands Centre which still stands today on the corner of Lake and Spence Streets Cairns.

My grandfather decided to give cane growing another go in 1915. The cane was carted in slings on a horse drawn cart to Freshwater railway siding, where it was placed on rail trucks and transported to the Mulgrave sugar mill at Gordonvale.

Later by 1924 another tramline was built by CSR(Colonial Sugar Refinery) from Hambledon Mill Edmonton out through to Freshwater. My father Louis joined the AIF (Australian Imperial Force) army in 1917 and served in France as a machine gunner. Dad arrived back in Australia in 1919 and was discharged.

After the war, dad bought a 120 acre (50 hectares)cane farm at Sawmill Pocket, about 4km south of Edmonton The buildings on the farm consisted of stables for ten horses, cow bails and calf pens, barracks for the cane cutters and a galvanised iron house with a concrete floor. Dad lived on his own for a while before he married Mum. They lived in the old house until the new one was built. The farm always ran a couple of cows which dad milked in the early days and Mum would make butter and cream by turning the separator. Mum would also make Rosella Jam and Mango chutney and we had lots of tropical fruit trees growing on the farm. We had an old shed for the fowls, but most of them liked roosting in the mango tree. Occasionally we’d get woken in the middle of the night by the squawking of a hen being crushed in the coils of a carpet snake. To be continued...

Robyn’s Real Estate Read Welcome to this month’s Editorial of all things Real Estate. I was pleased to attend a Real Estate Institute of Qld luncheon this month which featured guest speakers for the Aquis Project. It was very interesting to have the Executives step us through their EIS and the steps still required to have this project approved. The first of these hurdles is the ACCC approving the purchase by Aquis of the Cairns Reef Casino which is due to be announced on 21.08.2014.

Also announced this month is the Singaporean backed Aspial project which is before the Council and is proposed to be built on the Spence Street site just opposite our City Office. There seems to be continued positivity in the property market with many properties being listed and sold within a week or two.

Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride for Cancer After almost 350 kilometres completed a group of bike riders and supporters visited Gordonvale on Saturday the 26th of July on their way to Cairns as part of the Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride in the hope of raising awareness and money for the Childrens Cancer Institutue of Australia.

Children's Cancer Institute was originally known as The Children's Leukaemia and Cancer Foundation and was established in May 1976 by a dedicated group of parents and doctors of children with cancer. The ride was founded in 1999 by Selwyn Hardwick. Sel felt helpless when his sister passed away from cancer, and one of his grandchildren became ill with leukaemia.

On a road trip coming back from Cairns, Sel came up with the idea of riding from Townsville to Cairns to raise money to give to the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia. He felt that this was a way he could help his grandson proactively. He invited his son to join in the challenge and the idea was born. While approaching bike shops in Townsville, Sel realized that he hadn’t done a lot of riding for some time and knew that he would need some help. It was when Sel visited Andrew Abrahams at Better Bikes that the idea became reality, with Andrew suggesting that he get

Vintage Drop Shaft Ladies Sulky restored Indigo Chic opens

By D.R. A Vintage Drop Shaft Ladies Sulky recently professionally restored by Pearce Constructions, a local Gordonvale construction company has added a little bit of History to the town of Gordonvale.

The sulky is over 100 years old and prior to restoration it was strung up in a car port for over 35 years. A drop shaft ladies sulky was specifically made for ladies as they were built with two stars on the ladies side of the vehicle. This particular model was originally used for society ladies or the richer end of society. The wheels are fully timber and contain no bearings, with the tyres on the wheels costing over $1000 each. The sulky will be used in community events and fundraising activities both in Gordonvale and Cairns with the first being the annual Great Pyramid Race on the 9th of August.

The Sulky will be raising money in conjunction with the Variety club for childrens cancer and rides will be $5.00 with all money donated to the charity. The vehicle will be pulled along by Sam. Sam has his own following through a community Facebook page, “Sam the Horse”.

The driver, Kylie Day, is a well known local having lived in Gordonvale for her whole life having attended to both Gordonvale Primary and Gordonvale High Schools. Keeping in the historical tradition of the family Kylies grandfather and great grandfather constructed the Gordonvale saw mill in Riverstone Road and adjacent street.

Gordonvale Creatives On Saturday the 6th of September, Gordonvale Creatives will be holding their first annual art prize. On Friday the 5th of September, there will be an opening night from 6pm until 9pm where judging will take place and prizes will be awarded.

There will also be an art raffle, artists wine bar and live music. Saturday the 6th the exhibition will be open for public viewing from 8am until 8pm. 1st prize will be $500 courtesy of the Cairns Regional Council mayors Development Fund.

There will also be a Peoples Choice Prize.
