The Rape of Europe
Since 24 February 2022, Russian aggression and the murderous war against the Ukrainian people take us back to the darkest times in European history. Tens of thousands dead, cities partially razed, millions of Ukrainian refugees wandering across Europe. How to react, as a museum, how to show a sign of solidarity with those under attack when direct cooperation with a Ukrainian museum is currently prov ing impossible and our own collections contain almost no objects related to this country?
L'agression russe et la guerre meurtrière qui s'abat sur le peuple ukrainien depuis le 24 février 2022 nous ramènent aux moments les plus sombres de l'histoire européenne. Comment réagir, en tant que musée, comment montrer un signe de solidarité avec les opprimés, alors qu'une coopération directe avec un musée ukrainien s'avère actuellement impossible et que nos propres collections ne contiennent presque aucun objet lié à ce pays ?
In solidarity with Ukraine
By pure coincidence, MNHA was already long before the start of hostilities in contact with Russian born artist Maxim Kantor, well known for his very critical attitude towards the Putin regime and recent developments in Russia. Kantor spontaneously agreed to show more than sixty of his works that unmask the totalitarian and aggressive character of the current Russian regime. The show also includes a painting specially created for the exhibition and which gave it its title: The Rape of Europe Several rooms on the 4th floor happened to be completely empty while waiting for the parquet to be refurbished. In consultation with the artist, we decided to leave them in their current raw state. We present this exceptional exhibition in every way in collaboration with the Luxembourg Red Cross. Admission will be free; however, we invite visitors to make a donation to help Ukrainian refugees in Luxembourg.
En solidarité avec l'Ukraine
Par pure coïncidence, au début des hostilités nous étions déjà en contact avec l'artiste Maxim Kantor. Peintre d'origine russe vivant en France et connu pour sa position très critique vis-à-vis du régime de Poutine et des récents développements en Russie, Kantor a spontanément accepté d'organiser une exposition d'urgence d'une soixantaine d'œuvres politiques qui démasquent le caractère totalitaire et agressif du régime russe actuel. L'exposition comprend également un tableau spécialement créé pour l'occasion et qui a donné son titre à l'exposition : The Rape of Europe. Il se trouve que plusieurs salles du 4e étage avaient été vidées de tout contenu en attendant que le parquet soit réparé. En concertation avec l'artiste, nous avons décidé de les utiliser en urgence, en les laissant dans leur état brut actuel. Nous présentons cette exposition exceptionnelle en tout point en collaboration avec la Croix-Rouge luxembourgeoise. L'entrée sera gratuite, nous invitons les
visiteurs à faire un don pour aider les réfugiés ukrainiens au Luxembourg.

Solidarität mit der Ukraine Die russische Aggression und der seit dem 24. Februar anhaltende mörderische Krieg gegen das ukrainische Volk führen uns zurück in die dunkelsten Zeiten der europäischen Geschichte. Wie kann man als Museum reagieren, wie ein Zeichen der Solidarität mit den Unterdrückten setzen, wenn eine direkte Zusammenarbeit mit einem ukrainischen Museum derzeit nicht möglich ist und unsere eigenen Sammlungen kaum Objekte mit Bezug zu diesem Land umfassen?

Der Eintritt ist frei, wir laden die Besucher ein, eine Spende zugunsten der ukrainischen Flüchtlinge in Luxemburg zu machen.
Es war reiner Zufall, dass wir bereits vor Beginn der Kampfhandlungen Kontakt mit dem Künstler Maxim Kantor aufgenommen hatten. Kantor, ein in Frankreich lebender Maler russischer Herkunft, der für seine sehr kritische Haltung gegenüber dem Putin-Regime und den jüngsten Entwicklungen in Russland bekannt ist, erklärte sich spontan bereit, ad hoc eine Ausstellung mit über sechzig politischen Werken auf die Beine zu stellen, die den totalitären und aggressiven Charakter des gegenwärtigen russischen Regimes verdeutlichen. Zur Ausstellung gehört auch ein eigens für sie geschaffenes Gemälde, das ihr auch den Titel gab: The Rape of Europe. Ein weiterer Zufall wollte es, dass mehrere Ausstellungsräume der 4. Etage wegen einer anstehenden Erneuerung

From 1987 until today, Kantor has exhibited in museums all over the world, among them Moscow State Tretyakov Gallery, Saint-Petersburg State Russian Pushkin Museum, Shirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Staedel Museum Frankfurt, London Royal College, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and National Museum Gdansk. In 1997, he represented the Russian Federation at the 47 Biennale d’Arte di Venezia with his exhibition “Criminal Chronicle”.
Maxim Kantor (Moscow 1957) is a painter, draftsman, sculptor, writer, essayist and art historian. He holds Russian, German and Argentinian nationalities.
As a painter, Kantor never joined any artistic group. Since Soviet times, his work has been reflective of his critical observations of society and politics. The subjects of his large-format paintings and graphic works intertwine with his fiction works, public statements and essays.
In 1972, Kantor was expelled from the 9th special school for publishing anti-Soviet wall newspapers. He worked at the Kazan Railway Station as a loader, then as a laboratory assistant in the educational and experimental design laboratory at the Union of Artists of the USSR. He graduated from the Moscow State University of Printing Art in 1980, took part in unofficial exhibitions and founded the underground art group “Krasnyj Dom”
His novel “Krasnyj svet” (Red Light) from 2013, a wide-ranging fact-saturated but fictionally embellished panorama of Russian history from the failure of the Russian Revolution to the Ukraine war of 2013 was on the short list of several Russian literary awards. It has since been translated into French (Feu Rouge) by Louison Éditions in 2016 and German (Rotes Licht) by Paul Zsolnay Verlag in 2018.
