California Water Service Group (California Water) is proud to be named a Top Workplace in the Bay Area for the seventh consecutive year

L

ooking back, 2017 was a record year for California Water Service Group. We topped industry standards for customer service, met all state and federal water quality standards for the systems that we operate, conducted more than 470,000 water quality tests, and invested nearly $260 million into our water systems. None of this would have been possible without our 1,200 dedicated employees. We firmly believe that our employees are the best in the industry, and we are proud of their commitment to providing quality, service, and value to the 2 million people we serve, 400,000 of whom are right here in the Bay Area. Our most valuable assets aren’t our pipes and pumps —they are our people. We strive to be an employer of choice by providing a safe workplace, opportunities for professional development, and an atmosphere of respect, collaboration, and transparent communication. What makes working at California Water unique and why do our employees often spend their entire careers with us? We foster growth. Our employee development program offers the chance for our employees to learn about roles outside of their jobs, which helps them make educated decisions about their career path with the company. We advocate for collaboration. Our employees have the opportunity to collaborate and solve challenges that affect all of our service areas. And we offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package. This includes 401(k) matching, pensions, competitive wages, health care, and more so our employees and their families are taken care of from the start of their career through their retirement. We are also committed to making good things happen and improving the quality of life in our communities, and our employees are an important part of that commitment. Whether it’s taking the time to raise money for a local charity or donating time to volunteer at a local homeless shelter or food pantry, our employees are connected to their communities.

The bottom line: Whether serving customers or giving back to our communities, our employees share our determination to always do the right thing. Hear what some of our employees have to say: “I work with a great group of people throughout our organization. We provide an essential product and are very good at what we do, and we are getting better every day.” “I have the opportunity to work for a company that takes our customers’ experience seriously. I take pride in assisting our customers every day.” “I enjoy the work, the people, the customers, and everything that we do and our values. I have the freedom to do my job and to offer support when needed.” “I love my management: They listen to my ideas and concerns, and encourage me to think outside the box.” “My efforts are recognized and are appreciated. ‘California Water’ understands the well-being of each employee and cares and listens to all concerns. Although I have my duties and responsibilities, I love helping others and working ‘outside the box’ so that everyone is successful!” “I am consistently provided the opportunity to grow and excel. I have been given an extremely rewarding career, for which I am very thankful. I am afforded the ability to assist customers, colleagues, and co-workers daily. I truly value and appreciate the responsibilities I have been given.” “I work with great, caring professionals, and there is a satisfaction to providing clean, safe, and reliable water to our customers.” “Everyone at Cal Water wants to do the right thing by way of supporting our customers, communities and each other. The deep-rooted culture supports our ‘one-team’ approach, and we are all striving to do the best we can.”

Top Workplaces build bonds with their Bay Area neighborhoods BY ANDY COFFARO

CORRESPONDENT

T

here are an endless number of reasons why this year’s crop of Top Workplaces are desirable enterprises to work at, from company perks to recent benchmark events. Perhaps one of the things that makes 2018’s winners so impressive is their extreme generosity when it comes to giving back to their communities. To celebrate community advocacy, the multifamily real estate company Alliance Residential holds its Alliance Day of Giving campaign each November to encourage its associates to give back in their communities. Avidbank’s end-of-year Second Harvest Food Bank program donated an impressive $13,048 in 2017. They also partnered with Peninsula Bridge, a local nonprofit that supports and prepares low-income students for success in high school and college.

CD & Power contributes to multiple charities while also participating in various fundraisers. Due to the devastating wildfires in Northern California, the company raised over $10,000 to assist those negatively impacted by the natural disaster. The agents and staff members at Dudum Real Estate Group recently helped serve 2,000 meals to those in need at St. Anthony’s in San Francisco, and the company consistently organizes collections for the local food bank drive. Intapp employees took part in SOCKtober during the holidays to donate over 150 new pairs of socks. This summer the company will be holding its annual on-site blood donation drive to support the Stanford Blood Center. Kidder Mathews supports a plethora of community

Anything is possible with Seneca’s Unconditional Support Seneca was there to support her every step of the way.

“It takes a lot to know what you want,” Celeste says. “I didn’t really start to learn who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do with my life until I came to Seneca.” It’s hard to believe that only a couple years ago, Celeste, a former foster youth and current college student, was just an anxious high schooler, trying to balance a relationship with her foster mother while staying connected to her biological mom. Despite these challenges, Celeste held fast to her dream of attending a four year university, and

Seneca Family of Agencies (Seneca) is driven by values that reflect the agency’s foundational commitment to sustain youth and families through the most difficult times of their lives. Through this unwavering promise, Seneca works to create a new narrative of possibilities: to discover love where there appears to be only loss; to give compassion in the face of indifference; and to celebrate the joy of hard earned success. Over the last thirty three years, Seneca has become the statewide leader in the provision of permanency, mental health, and education services. Our continuum of care was developed out of a willingness to persistently ask: What do youth and their families need? What will it take to ensure those needs are met? While the families we serve are among the most vulnerable, few providers have reached such high levels of success. In honor

of being named a Top Workplace for the fourth year in a row, we’re proud to share this #SenecaSpotlight, featuring Celeste, a shining example of Unconditional Care in action. “At Seneca I was given the option to make my own choices, which is not something I have ever been given the option to do,” says Celeste. “Helping our foster youth have a voice in the process is critical,” says Lillian Conboy, a Seneca Support Counselor who helped track down high school transcripts, edit her college essays and help complete Celeste’s financial aid forms as she pushed toward her dream of higher education. Celeste is currently a sophomore at UC Merced, and a valued Seneca intern. Majoring in Chemistry and Public Health, she hopes to practice medicine at a community clinic after graduating. Welcoming Celeste as a part of the Seneca family not only enriches our agency, but also allows us to better serve the youth we care so deeply about.

Invest in youth like Celeste because anything is possible when you’re free to dream. Advertorial content provided by Seneca Family of Agencies.

LA Fisher House delivers comfort to wounded, ailing military personnel

T

he LA Fisher House stands as a model of hope and giving back to a community of people who have made the ultimate sacrifice: military personnel, veterans and their families. One of those people is SFC Chris Edwards, U.S. Army, who in 2008 stepped on an IED in Iraq, suffering burns over 80 percent of his body and other major injuries. When he went to the VA hospital in Los Angeles a few years ago, his family took comfort at the LA Fisher House. “In the beginning, every day I didn’t want to get out of bed,” he said in a video interview for the nonprofit. “The Fisher House makes it easier because you’ve got your wife and children there. … Family helps you heal a lot more than just sitting in a hospital bed.” American military members who need help with temporary supportive housing can find it with the LA Fisher House, part of a public-private system that delivers vital support to service members, veterans

and their families when long-term treatment is needed at military hospitals and VA medical centers. Currently, there are 76 Fisher Houses across the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom, all run through the Fisher House Foundation; LA Fisher House was the 43rd one to join the roster. It was completed in 2009, attracting patients from all over California and Nevada, and including one woman who traveled from Okinawa, Japan. The house has 21 suites with private bedrooms and bathrooms. Guests share a common kitchen, dining room, laundry, and a living room that has toys and a library for children. Most patients stay an average of five days, free of charge. In 2017, LA Fisher House served 1,050 families with an average stay of five days and a total of 5,250 nights delivered, saving military families $1,233,750 in lodging costs. So far in 2018, Jan. 1 through April 30, they have served 536 families.

“These relationships with the family members are part of the therapeutic process,” said Col. Evan Renz, director, U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research Burn Center. “We see the Fisher House and staff as part of the treatment team. We truly do depend on the families of the wounded warriors to assist in that process.”

Sage Intacct’s winning combination for long-term success

S

age Intacct has found success for a number of years through the winning combination of a great product offering, an experienced leadership team, and a focus on customer and employee satisfaction. We have a long history of winning awards, but we are especially proud to be recognized by Bay Area News Group as a Top Workplace for the eighth year in a row. As the innovation and customer satisfaction leader in cloud financial management software, Sage Intacct brings cloud computing to finance and accounting. Over 11,000 customers use our cloudbased accounting software products to automate complex processes and surface rich financial and operational insights. In use by organizations from startups to public companies, Sage Intacct is designed to improve company performance and make finance more productive. In 2017, Gartner named Sage Intacct a Visionary in the magic quadrant for cloud core financial management suites for midsize, large, and global enterprises. Sage Intacct’s placement was based on Gartner’s assessment of our completeness of vision and ability to execute. Along with our key product offerings, Sage Intacct has built an outstanding, award-winning culture that produces consistently high customer and employee satisfaction ratings.

300 Park Avenue • Suite 1400 • San Jose (408) 878-0900 • www.sageintacct.com

Customer success has always been at the heart of our business model, as evidenced by our long record of outstanding customer satisfaction rates. In the Fall 2017 G2 Crowd Accounting Software Grid® report, Sage Intacct was placed in the Leaders quadrant and achieved the top customer satisfaction score. These results, which are based solely on customer feedback, validate the value that Sage Intacct delivers to our customers.

employee feedback. We were named a Best and Brightest Company to Work For in the Nation as well as a Best and Brightest in Wellness. The Best and Brightest Companies to Work For competition identifies and honors organizations that display a commitment to excellence in their human resource practices and employee enrichment; this is the fourth straight year Sage Intacct has made this prestigious list.

Sage Intacct offers competitive compensation packages as well as all the perks that are customary at many Silicon Valley companies. But for us, the focus on employee satisfaction goes well beyond these standard incentives: ongoing training and career development opportunities ensure that employees can achieve their professional goals; a focus on wellness and a healthy work/life balance prevents stress and burnout and leads to employees who are happier, more focused, and more productive in both their personal and professional lives; and a commitment to hiring the right people fosters a collaborative environment where employees feel valued and stay engaged.

And it’s not just the company that is winning awards. Our product success and high satisfaction scores could not happen without the support and leadership of an experienced management team — and Sage Intacct’s executives are routinely acknowledged for their own outstanding contributions.

Earlier this year, Fortune magazine and consulting firm Great Places to Work named Sage Intacct as one of the 2018 Best Workplaces in the Bay Area for the third consecutive year. In 2017, National Association for Business Resources (NABR) bestowed Sage Intacct with two awards based on

In the past year alone, Sage Intacct leaders have been named as the Gold winner for Finance Executive of the Year in the 2017 Best in Biz Awards International; placed on Accounting Today’s 2017 Top 100 Most Influential People list; named to CRN’s prestigious list of top Channel Chiefs for 2017; and selected as the Gold Winner in the prestigious CEO World Executive of the Year Awards for midsize organizations.

Sage Intacct proud to be a Top Workplace for 8 years in a row

A

t Sage Intacct, the innovation and customer satisfaction leader in cloud financial management solutions, we consistently win awards for our workplace culture. Over the years, we have found that it is only possible to sustain a truly great corporate culture through innovative programs and a strong commitment from the top down. Our focus on employee satisfaction has been an integral part of the company culture since we were founded. From quarterly wellness challenges and teambuilding events to ongoing training and advancement opportunities, Sage Intacct has succeeded in creating an overall company culture that provides each employee with the encouragement and tools to achieve their goals. This has led to consistently high employee satisfaction ratings, as well as an employee retention rate that is uncommonly high amongst Silicon Valley companies. Recently, Sage Intacct received two awards for employee health and wellness — one of the biggest trends in measuring an employer’s commitment to its employees’ well being. We were recognized as one of the 2017 Bay Area Healthiest Employers, an awards program presented by the San Francisco Business Times and the Silicon Valley Business Journal to

acknowledge organizations for their commitment to employee health with exceptional corporate wellness programs. We were also recognized by the National Association for Business Resources as one of the Nation’s Best & Brightest in Wellness for 2017, a program that honors organizations who celebrate quality and excellence in employee and worksite health. Sage Intacct is also known for taking a lead in innovative employment programs. Last year, we partnered with Path Forward, a nonprofit agency that is dedicated to helping experienced professionals re-enter the workforce after taking a break in their careers for caregiving. The program offers full-time, 16-week “returnship” programs for experienced professionals returning to the workforce. Of all the participating companies in the Bay Area, Sage Intacct had the highest number of returnships offered. With strong support from our executive team, we were able to place returnees in a variety of departments throughout our organization. These and other initiatives are why Sage Intacct is consistently recognized for our outstanding work environment. Our recent inclusion in the Bay Area News Group’s Top Workplaces in the Bay Area for

2018 marks the eighth consecutive year Sage Intacct has been named to the list. Earlier this year, Fortune magazine and consulting firm Great Places to Work named Sage Intacct as one of the 2018 Best Workplaces in the Bay Area for the third consecutive year. Last year, we were recognized as one of the 2017 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For in the Nation by the National Association for Business Resources, an award that recognizes organizations that excel at employee relations, use innovation to motivate employees, and implement creative compensation programs. The Silicon Valley Business Journal and San Francisco Business Times also included us on their 2017 Best Places to Work in the Bay Area list. In previous years, Sage Intacct has also been recognized as a Best Place to Work by Glassdoor, a Best Place to Work in North America by Best in Biz Awards, and as one of the country’s 50 Best Workplaces for Recent College Graduates by Great Place to Work and Fortune magazine.

Employee survey We survey employees at participating employers using either paper surveys or an online survey application. Each of the statements has a positivity score. The positivity score on the Positivity page shows the overall percentage of positive responses for each statement. Responders rank our statements on a 7 point likert scale, ranging from Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree, so the score shown is the percentage of responders who answered Slightly Agree, Agree or Strongly Agree to each statement. Each of the statements has been tested to ensure it has a high correlation with how employees feel about their workplace, which is calculated by correlating the statement responses to employee engagement. The Statement Importance page lists the statements that were part of the survey.

Response requirements We require a response rate of at least 35 percent for employees based in the Bay Area. In addition, employers with 85 or fewer Bay Area employees must have at least 30 responders. We encourage employers to survey all employees, but large employers can choose to randomly sample their Bay Area employees. At least 500 employees must be included in the random sample for employers 2,500 or less. For those employers over 2,500 but less than 5,000 employees, we require 20 percent minimum distributed. For employers 5,000 or more the minimum is 1,000 surveys distributed.

Testing for questionable results After the survey is complete, we first run a series of statistical tests to look for any questionable results. We disqualify a small number of employers based on these tests. As the effectiveness of these tests depends on employers not being aware of them, we do not publish the details.

Selection of Top Workplaces We categorize the employers into size bands because smaller employers tend to score higher than midsize employers, and midsize employers tend to score higher than large employers. We then rank the employers within their size band based solely on the employee responses to the survey statements. The top employers in each size band are then selected as the Top Workplaces in the Bay Area for 2018 and listed on the Top Workplaces Summary page. We also determine a list of special awards based on standout scores on specific survey statements, which are listed on the Special Awards page.

Unconditional care.

It’s not just what we do, it’s who we are. “I feel a huge sense of pride and honor to work for an agency that not only cares about the communities they serve, but who also truly cares for their employees. For Seneca to be recognized means that we take the time and energy to understand the complexities of what it means to keep sincerity, compassion, and motivation alive.” ~ Staff, Oakland

T

he mission of Seneca Family of Agencies (Seneca) is to help children and families through the most difficult times of their lives. Seneca was founded in 1985 from a belief that all youth are capable of success, belonging, and happiness when provided thoughtful supports that are responsive to their unique needs and experiences. Starting as a small residential and day treatment program for the Bay Area’s most struggling youth, we aimed to address the failure of public systems to adequately meet the needs of youth impacted by profound trauma, loss, and disability. Far too often these youth ended up isolated from their families, peers, and communities, being moved between treatment settings that lacked the capacity to help them heal and thrive. Our agency’s founding commitment of providing Unconditional Care — doing whatever it takes to support a youth’s success without the option to give up — has driven our efforts for more than three decades.

Recent playground build at Seneca’s nonpublic school Maya Angelou Academy

Seneca’s impact as a 2017-18 Top Workplace 92 staff received professional development scholarships, empowering them to expand their learning. 4,627 youth and families received support in a community setting. 67 staff selected to participate in Seneca’s three embedded graduate programs. 98% of the adoptions that Seneca facilitates are successful and permanent. (National average is approximately 75%).

17,000 youth and families served by Seneca’s Unconditional Care last year.

“This award validates that we are an organization full of gifted and compassionate people and my greatest wish is that in the future, our staff will be able to say they helped to break the cycles of poverty, isolation, disconnection, abuse and neglect that has impacted our children, their families and our communities for generations,” says Seneca CEO and Founder, Ken Berrick. Unconditional Care is both our philosophy and practice. It is the most important thing that we teach and learn every day. It’s not just what we do, it’s who we are.

Seneca empowers families with unconditional support

”Seneca staff have helped coach us as parents, develop skills in communication and understanding, and helped us trust our instincts as parents with our youth. They understand that by supporting the parents they are supporting the youth and how important it is for all our family to function well in order for our kiddo to thrive.”

“As a lesbian couple who came into this fostering program in an untraditional manner, we are appreciative of the support that we’ve received and the consideration of our unique needs as a family.”

“As a single parent of youth who have experienced trauma, I have learned that balancing many things at once is important. With Seneca, there is a constant conversation and an openness to solving problems. This is an organization that truly wants to make a difference.”

Alliance Residential thrives with its ‘Me, We, Us’ mindset

A

lliance Residential is reaping industry awards and growing its influence across the nation. The property management company hit a benchmark in 2017 — surpassing the 100,000-managed-units marker — and reigns at No. 4 on the 2018 National Multifamily Housing Council’s Top 50 Largest Apartment Managers list. In the Bay Area, the company is making strides, too, earning for the first time a spot as a Top Workplace in 2018. When talking about these milestone achievements, the company is quick to note that it wasn’t just about adding units — Alliance’s growth is a direct reflection of its associates’ growth and development both individually and as a team.

111 West Saint John Street, Suite 445 • San Jose (408) 769-4250 • www.allresco.com

Alliance refers to this focus as the “Me, We, Us” mindset — emphasizing individual mastery of roles (me), while leveraging the power of teamwork (we) to deliver on a larger organizational purpose (us): Creating exceptional homes, unprecedented lifestyles and fulfilling opportunities.

Alliance’s internal learning management system allows associates to pursue a Certified Property Manager designation as part of its partnership with the Institute of Real Estate Management. Alliance foots the bill for educational costs plus offers a $10,000 pay bump once the designation is official.

Alliance provides its employees with Dale Carnegie Sales Advantage training, taught by certified in-house Dale Carnegie instructors. This level of training enhances sales skills by showing associates how to empathize with potential and current residents, find unique ways to meet their needs and deliver a true, quality customer experience.

In striving for an exemplary work life, Alliance imbues its workers with the ability to experiment and learn. This accumulation of knowledge provides the company with a solid foundation and the world with happier people.

his year’s Top Workplaces know how to stand out and treat their employees right. From laser tag outings with co-workers to company committees that organize secret Santa gatherings, 2018’s Top Workplaces often subscribe to the “work hard, play hard” mantra. No two companies have the same story, and the ways in which they give back to their employees differ as well, but they all possess one common goal — to respect their workforce to the fullest and provide them with the best environment possible to enable them to maximize their potential. Alliance Residential, with a presence in 20 states and 33 metropolitan markets, recently surpassed more than 100,000 units managed by expanding and aligning strategies that emphasize individual ownership, team commitment and pursuit of a higher purpose.

We also host seminars where experts from within the company or outside fields give lectures on topics related to the scientific and fashion worlds.”

The female-owned business ALOM Technologies champions a collaborative working environment that focuses on employee satisfaction, diversity, inclusion and information sharing. The company also fosters a performance-oriented, yet fun and highly supportive work setting that emphasizes employee time off, wellness and enjoyable company events.
