The Best of Fremont 2021 is a special project of the Argus newspaper. This survey is not scientific and does not claim to be. But it does reflect opinions of those Fremont residents who feel strongly about a business, place or person, and all votes that were legitimately fielded were objectively analyzed and counted. All

ballots that maintained the rules were exhaustively reviewed. Suspected ballot stuffers were eliminated.

Sometimes regional or specialty businesses in Newark or Union City were nominated and in cases where they had a significant amount of votes they were included.

Half Price Books The name says it all, Half Price Books, and customers find it a great option for wallet-friendly entertainment and flock to the store to shop for the latest titles and treasures.

“We enjoyed getting to know the community and our customers who have visited the store for the past 25 years,” says Pamela Yamamoto, California’s district manager. The customer base is loyal and reminds us how important our presence is in their community, says store manager Patrick Barry.

Half Price Books buys and sells new and used books, movies, music, and basically anything printed or recorded, “except yesterday’s newspaper.” Customers enjoy the convenience of selling the books they’ve already read and finding new titles. During COVID-19, Yamamoto says the staff has worked hard to keep both the customers and employees safe. They continue to require masks to be worn in the store, have limited-capacity shopping, and frequently clean the common areas and workstations.

Half Price Books is 120 stores strong across the country. Since 2012, more than 11.1 million books have been donated to groups including Boys & Girls Clubs, Junior League, the YMCA, Crayon to Computers, Girl Scouts, Feed the Children, and many more. Ken Gjemre and Pat Anderson believed in “helping make the world a little better” and also created an employee-centric culture where profits are shared with the staff.

Dr. Justin Cheng He was raised in Fremont and has run his dental practice here for the past 22 years. Dr. Justin Cheng has a special connection to the Fremont community, often welcoming patients who were those people who helped guide him in his youth, including staff, teachers, and fellow high school students.

Since their recent reopening, they have installed partitions and are following all safety and sanitation guidelines, including temperature checks and the use of sanitizer and masks.

Prince of Peace Ministries Since 1957, Prince of Peace, a Christian school, has served the Fremont, Newark, Union City, and Hayward communities, nurturing generations of children with a quality academic and Christian foundation. The preschool opened in 2007. A WASC-accredited school, Prince of Peace focuses on its students’ academic, social, emotional, and spiritual development.

“We strive to help children plant their roots deep, providing a foundation for academic success and lifelong success,” says Principal Jenny Cid. “Our community is strong and unique,” she adds. “We want our students to know that they are special and unique children of God. We value relationships and get to know our students individually, celebrating their unique gifts and abilities.” Blending a loving, nurturing environment with personal accountability and responsibility, they educate and cultivate the development of the whole child.

Parents, too, spend time in fellowship with one another, building their relationships.

With the COVID-19 restrictions, Prince of Peace remained dedicated to providing a quality and caring education for its students during this past year. Successful integration of a full-distance learning program and the use of the school-provided Chromebook means each student received live instruction for the Bible, math, language arts, science, history/ social studies, Spanish, music, and physical education. The preschool remained in person with limited capacity since June and also implemented a distance learning program option.

Today, about 260 students from preschoolers to eighth-graders are back on campus for in-person learning. Teachers and staff are proud to say that students have been able to successfully stay on track and meet or exceed grade-level standards throughout this past year. They are well prepared to move on to the next grade level in the fall. The school will continue to follow county and state safety guidelines as the reopening process continues.

Born and raised in Fremont, Landon says she loves her job and loves to travel. Two of her favorite places to travel are Maui and Italy, but her travels to East and South Africa have topped the list. This passion and her firsthand travel experiences and knowledge are invaluable when designing ideal vacations for her clients.

Working from home offices now after having a storefront for 25 years hasn’t changed their dedication to their clients.

“We continue to help our clients cancel and rebook their travel plans as needed due to Covid travel restrictions, “ she says.

“When they are ready to travel again, we will be there for them.”
